00:04For the first time ever, researchers have documented a cow deliberately using a tool.
00:09We've seen cows use scratchers before, but here she is actively manipulating a tool to solve a
00:13problem. Meet Veronica, a Swiss brown cow in Austria who picked up this broom, positioned it,
00:18and used it to reach an itchy spot that she couldn't scratch otherwise. And here's the
00:22part that made scientists freak out. She used the broom differently depending on the part of
00:26her body she was scratching. She'd usually use the big bristly end for tough spots like her back,
00:30but switched grips and used the smooth handle for sensitive areas like her udder or belly.
00:35That's not just like cow rubs against object, that's planning and control and adjusting the
00:40tool on purpose, all just using her mouth and tongue. And you thought tying a cherry knot was
00:44impressive. Using tools is a sign of advanced problem solving. An example that comes to mind
00:48is primates, like chimpanzees using sticks to reach into an anthill, or these cockatoos which used
00:53multiple tools to release trapped cashew nuts in a lab. But this behavior has never officially
00:58been documented in cows before. This is so cute. But if they start building IKEA furniture next,
01:03I'm done.
