The Bowens: A Portrait of an American Family
Transcript
00:00:13Let's get started.
00:00:40I don't know.
00:01:04Out of all the commands that Christ gives, there's none that he's telling you to go to the synagogue.
00:01:18Amongst this hedonistic world, I'll build my church.
00:01:30In the depths of what people think is impossible, I'll bring the spirit.
00:02:05There's always a plan, but the plan's the first casualty of war.
00:02:14We killed everybody that was trying to kill us.
00:02:18You know, the guy's trying to kill you, and you're trying to kill him.
00:02:21We're here to kill you.
00:02:33We're here to kill you.
00:02:38We're here to kill you.
00:02:40Go! One, two, three, four, five.
00:03:00I follow Christ's motto, which is deny yourself.
00:03:06Take up your cross and follow me.
00:03:24I had a very real sense that this might be it.
00:03:28I'll probably, this could be it.
00:03:31I'm probably gonna fucking die today.
00:04:07I'll take out for your people.
00:04:09Inside of all of us is two people.
00:04:13There is the spirit of who you are, and there is your anti-self.
00:04:19Your anti-self wants to be comfortable.
00:04:21It wants to find the easiest way out.
00:04:25You're gonna feel like this is too hard.
00:04:30It's not.
00:04:46Let's go, let's go, let's go.
00:04:49It's not gonna be a problem.
00:04:50You guys are gonna fucking get through this.
00:04:53And just in case, it's not called the if we quit.
00:04:55It's the fucking never quit.
00:04:56That's all there is to it.
00:04:57You guys understand who you are?
00:04:58Who you are?
00:04:59Let's do it.
00:05:01Let's go, let's go.
00:05:04Let's go, double time.
00:05:05Let's get going.
00:05:08Stay professional to the end.
00:05:09You guys understand who you are?
00:05:10Who you are?
00:05:12Let's go, let's go.
00:05:15Let's go, let's go.
00:05:17Hurry up.
00:05:18Hurry up.
00:05:19One more is the right answer.
00:05:20Let's go.
00:05:21Start loading up.
00:05:21Hurry up, sir.
00:05:45Alright, so first off, we, in order to take a look at a belief, because this is still based
00:05:50upon a belief, what's going on there, right?
00:05:54What is imposter syndrome in your thought process or in your terms?
00:06:00Is it somebody that thinks like they're not a part of the crew?
00:06:07Not a part of a crew?
00:06:08Okay.
00:06:09And so if that's your thought process, well, then what happens is if I'm just purely random
00:06:13and there was no hard work or grace or rather even nothing that led to the creation of the
00:06:21situation I'm in, well, then that means it can easily go just as well.
00:06:25Does that make sense?
00:06:26Yeah.
00:06:27Okay.
00:06:27So like in your terms, what does that mean?
00:06:29They're there for like no reason.
00:06:31And so they can just like maybe die for no reason.
00:06:35Yeah.
00:06:35Your brain's going to want to say to do it.
00:06:37Now, whether you do or not is irrelevant to the outcome.
00:06:40But that thought that you have something in opposition to your value set, people start
00:06:48to believe that they're the only ones that are struggling with doing what their values
00:06:53are.
00:06:54You got any questions or thoughts?
00:06:55No.
00:06:56Because you guys do got to get out of here shortly.
00:06:58I don't think so.
00:07:01So my name is Jordan Bowen.
00:07:05Attributes that describe me.
00:07:06I think for me, everything comes down to responsibility, integrity.
00:07:12I believe I'm hardworking, relentless, persistent.
00:07:16And I think I'm decently intelligent, but where I'm not, I'll just go back to persistent.
00:07:22Yeah.
00:07:26When you're good.
00:07:27So when you're looking at, um, on this struggle to do what you believe, Peace.
00:07:34Yeah.
00:07:35If what you believe is not rooted in any truth.
00:07:39Yeah.
00:07:39Then that struggle you feel is probably a healthy thing.
00:07:43My name is Jesse Bowen.
00:07:45And I would describe myself as a mother, a business owner, an entrepreneur, a free-spirited
00:07:52soul.
00:07:54My name is Slade Bowen.
00:07:57What I can tell you about my family is that we're all great because we all hang around
00:08:01as a family.
00:08:02My name is Brody.
00:08:03And my mom and dad, like, they're always trying to help people.
00:08:08Like, some people could look at us as role models.
00:08:09And I think that's great.
00:08:10I think it's awesome.
00:08:13The only one I could say that I get tired about is probably just Brody.
00:08:18Yeah.
00:08:18Hurry up and eat your food.
00:08:19You guys can do that.
00:08:20Let's go.
00:08:21Get your left arm.
00:08:22Oh.
00:08:22I'll go.
00:08:23Do that first.
00:08:24So I'll see you back here at nine.
00:08:26Yes.
00:08:27Okay.
00:08:27But we need to stop.
00:08:28Okay.
00:08:28Have fun, guys.
00:08:29Because, you know, for us, a friend of mine said this to me years past.
00:08:35And he said, like, hey, if your children leave your house at 18 years old and they don't
00:08:40know what you know from character and application standpoint, then you've fucked up.
00:08:45Either you're going to take responsibility for that outcome or you're going to farm that
00:08:50out to somebody else.
00:08:51And so, like, as we just, you know, Jess and I, because he started in public school,
00:08:56right?
00:08:56So he was in public school for what?
00:08:58Two years.
00:08:59Three years.
00:09:01You have this perception of what you think a homeschooler or a homeschool kid is going
00:09:04to be like.
00:09:05And so we kind of had that in the back of our mind.
00:09:07And Slade was in, I believe, second grade.
00:09:10And he came home and he said something.
00:09:13And we don't, I don't remember exactly what it was, but it was not what we would have said.
00:09:16Something maybe he believed in or it was something weird.
00:09:20And we're like, where'd you hear that, buddy?
00:09:21And he heard it from his teacher.
00:09:23And it was, like, so drastically different than not just our belief system, but what I
00:09:29believe is just a logical outcome when you just assess the facts in front of you.
00:09:34I was like, oh, man.
00:09:37Jordan's like, okay, let's do this.
00:09:38Let's take a year.
00:09:39You homeschool him and we'll see what happens.
00:09:42If the year is not good, we'll put him right back into school.
00:09:45I'm like, okay, I can handle that.
00:09:46I can do that.
00:09:47And so we did a year and we were like, oh, my gosh, we're so thankful we did this.
00:09:53You know, it wasn't easy by any means.
00:09:54It's not easy at first because you're used to your kid being at school all day.
00:09:58No, I've never gone to regular school.
00:10:00And I don't want to because I don't like to be in one spot for too long.
00:10:04Like, I have to go.
00:10:06I have to be on it.
00:10:07So I've never gone to real school.
00:10:09I don't really want to.
00:10:10You know, our kids can go run around and they can do whatever they want.
00:10:14And then we have just a couple hours to sit down with them.
00:10:17And you get used to it.
00:10:18Just like I'm used to Jordan every day.
00:10:19Like, you get, you all become a unit together.
00:10:22And you learn to be with your kid every day.
00:10:23And I can't imagine not spending that time with my kid every day, you know.
00:10:28What do we got for food here?
00:10:29Ready for your liver?
00:10:31Yeah.
00:10:31Let's go.
00:10:36Do we ever eat fast food?
00:10:38Not normally.
00:10:40For all the inquisitive people of the world, it won't kill you to eat raw liver.
00:10:44Well, that's not true.
00:10:45It definitely could kill you.
00:10:46You're up.
00:10:48Hey.
00:10:49I can't eat.
00:10:52It's better for you than how it looks.
00:10:56Without a doubt, the food system is the most detrimental thing that we have.
00:11:02Awesome.
00:11:03So first, I want to say thank you to Ms. Jean for letting us come here and give this nutrition
00:11:07seminar.
00:11:07A little back story.
00:11:09My name is Jesse.
00:11:10This is Jordan.
00:11:10We're Brody's parents.
00:11:12And we have been training people and teaching them about nutrition for over 14 years now.
00:11:17Curious for you kiddos.
00:11:19So do you think about what you eat currently when it comes to your training?
00:11:24Raise your hand.
00:11:25Show your hands if this even crosses your mind.
00:11:28The question is, if the chemicals aren't bad for you, if it's not a big deal, why are we using
00:11:34them?
00:11:35Why don't we just use normal food?
00:11:37Why are we using them?
00:11:38Okay.
00:11:39Well, because it's cheaper to make and they want to get people addicted to taste.
00:11:43Right?
00:11:44Real quick, can you give me what you think is a good food?
00:11:48Right?
00:11:49We use the words good and bad a lot.
00:11:50What's a good food?
00:11:52Carrot.
00:11:53All right.
00:11:53What else?
00:11:55Strawberries.
00:11:57Watermelon.
00:11:58Peppers.
00:11:59Yeah.
00:11:59So we talked a lot about a bunch of fruits now, a couple of vegetables snuck in there.
00:12:03What about meat?
00:12:06Mr. Jordan and I have done every diet you can imagine in the world.
00:12:10We try it all because we want to see what works the best for ourselves and for all the people
00:12:14that we train.
00:12:15So what we have found, because we work out a lot, we're athletes, is that protein is so
00:12:21important to recover, to build strong muscles, to just feel good.
00:12:26Like if you don't eat well, you're not going to feel like doing anything.
00:12:29If you don't feel like doing anything, you're going to end up having much higher levels of
00:12:33depression and anxiety.
00:12:34You're going to get heavier.
00:12:35You're going to feel less secure about yourself.
00:12:37You feel less secure about yourself.
00:12:38You're going to have harder times in your relationships.
00:12:41Your confidence is going to be less.
00:12:42You won't go for the job you should have went for.
00:12:45You're going to feel inadequate.
00:12:46It is just such a snowball that happens and it all starts with food.
00:12:51And we'll just end it with this so you guys can get back to practice.
00:12:53But what I would suggest, it's what I did and Brody and I started at the same time.
00:12:57We did a 30-day, you can call it a challenge, or we did a 30-day experiment.
00:13:01For one month, I'm going to see if I can really focus on my macronutrients, my proteins, my fats,
00:13:07and my carbs.
00:13:08See how good my gymnastics is.
00:13:09See how much better you feel.
00:13:11Best drug dealers on the planet are the people that make food.
00:13:17Slade, did you know there's a tornado watch out right now?
00:13:19No.
00:13:20Yeah.
00:13:20So we'll go into the pavilion and play.
00:13:22So let's go to the beach.
00:13:24All right, so we are heading to the Destin Lifeguard Junior Program.
00:13:33So it's a junior lifeguard program that the kids do every year.
00:13:37And it's a three-week-long program in hopes when they turn 16 they can become lifeguards.
00:13:42And that's Slade's path.
00:13:44So in two years, he'll be a lifeguard on the beach.
00:13:46So it's pretty awesome.
00:13:53A strict father?
00:13:56I guess that depends.
00:13:58It's not a loaded question, but it could be a loaded answer.
00:14:01Yeah, I think I'm ultra-strict to principles.
00:14:05That's one of the biggest challenges that you're going to face today.
00:14:09To the beach.
00:14:13One of those principles is having a good time, right?
00:14:16So not in the traditional sense.
00:14:18I am big on principles.
00:14:21I'm big on character.
00:14:28We have, we take what works for us and we use it.
00:14:32We're not set on a certain weight to parent.
00:14:37We have standards, right?
00:14:38And expectations.
00:14:40But we have that on ourselves too.
00:14:42And we have failed.
00:14:43And our kids have seen us fail.
00:14:45But we try to show them that through modeling and role modeling that that is life.
00:14:52And it's going to happen, right?
00:14:54You are going to fail in life.
00:14:56But it's how you take your failures and you look for growth and you continue on.
00:15:03There's a difference between failing and quitting.
00:15:06Absolutely, we don't quit.
00:15:08But failure is going to happen.
00:15:19Stay tight.
00:15:22Christ says to all who would come after me, deny yourself, take up your cross and follow me.
00:15:27We give our kids tons of freedom to make choices and errors and faults and failures.
00:15:34Three minutes.
00:15:35Like my ankles down.
00:15:36I won't feel my feet for a little bit.
00:15:38What we don't give them freedom to do is to live negligently, be disrespectful, to have
00:15:44bad character, to live with a lack of integrity.
00:15:47Those are non-negotiables.
00:15:48Bones get straighter and you're leveraged, right?
00:15:50The ability to lift.
00:15:52It's one of the reasons we constantly set up structured challenges for our kids.
00:15:56I think people have a lot of misconceptions about kids lifting weights because it's so foreign
00:16:01to them.
00:16:01Three, two, one, go ahead.
00:16:05Pretty young when I did my first clean.
00:16:07So I started maybe doing like Olympic lifts and stuff is like when I was like three or
00:16:13four that age.
00:16:15You see Brody or Slade do a deadlift.
00:16:18Like, oh my gosh, her back.
00:16:19I can't believe you would do that.
00:16:20Or she must hate that.
00:16:21You must make her do that.
00:16:22They have all these misconceptions about strength training, but yet they don't realize a child
00:16:29can't deadlift like Brody did right away.
00:16:32There's no way they could walk up and even move the barbell.
00:16:35So there's no really risk of injury because they couldn't even pick it up.
00:16:38I want my children to know life has challenges.
00:16:44It's going to be hard.
00:16:45You're going to gain perspective.
00:16:47It's okay.
00:16:49And it is probably the singular best reason to let your kids work out.
00:16:54That's why we let our kids work out because every single day the weights can win.
00:17:593, 2, 1.
00:18:11What?
00:18:15First off, speak up.
00:18:16Second, what are you fucking homeschooled?
00:18:19Can't you count to 8?
00:18:20Let's go.
00:18:43You're a special.
00:18:49You should do it quick.
00:19:05So I grew up in a very small, what they would say, village in Illinois.
00:19:12I grew up on a farm, but not the typical farm most people think of.
00:19:15I grew up on a soybean and corn farm.
00:19:19I grew up with my family, my mother and my father, and my brother, who was five years
00:19:24younger.
00:19:25Where?
00:19:26No, it comes out of the skin.
00:19:28Exactly.
00:19:28That's what it did.
00:19:29It was outside.
00:19:30But when I was, I believe, 13, my parents divorced, and so that was pretty hard on me because
00:19:36I didn't see it coming.
00:19:38It was hard when you're so used to your family together, and then they tell you, oh, no,
00:19:43we're, like, we're done.
00:19:45So that was really hard.
00:19:46You know, that was probably the hardest time of my childhood.
00:19:59I ended up working for State Farm and realized I hated sitting at a desk.
00:20:03I, like, racked my brain on what I could do, and I don't even know how I thought of the
00:20:07military, but I drove, I found the recruiter's office, I drove there by myself, and I just
00:20:12walked in.
00:20:13But the Air Force was there, and I chatted with them, and it was a great chat, and I
00:20:17thought, okay, let's do it.
00:20:18I had no idea what I was signing up for.
00:20:20I had no idea, like, basic training.
00:20:23I just was like, sign me up.
00:20:24Let's do this.
00:20:25Wait.
00:20:27Wait.
00:20:29Eyes.
00:20:31Oh.
00:20:33I was born here in Florida, in North Florida.
00:20:36My upbringing, kind of socioeconomically, was a little bit of everything.
00:20:41Which was super wild, but it was a ton of fun, to be honest.
00:20:44Like, so, definitely got into a lot of fights, really, just due to being different sometimes.
00:20:50You know what I mean?
00:20:51You have the burden to prove formation, reach, and damages.
00:20:56I've always felt as, like, a strong protector of people, but I don't remember, like, an aspiration
00:21:02for a certain job.
00:21:04First, I was thinking, I graduated high school, and, like, especially being of the millennial
00:21:09age, it's like, well, what are you supposed to do?
00:21:11You're supposed to go to college, right?
00:21:12At the end of my 10th grade year, I had, like, a 0.9 GPA, and it's because I didn't
00:21:21really, I didn't care.
00:21:22Like, I was unstimulated.
00:21:23It was very boring.
00:21:24And across, like, junior and senior year, I went from, like, a 0.9 to I graduated with
00:21:28a 3.3.
00:21:29My family, at this point, had started to be able to actually make enough money to send
00:21:33me to college, and kind of everything came, I would say, like, into line where it wouldn't
00:21:37be an issue.
00:21:38By this time in high school, I was thinking I'd be an engineer, and so I went and did,
00:21:42like, the little tour at Georgia Tech and stuff, and I walked around, and I was like,
00:21:47I don't think I'm responsible enough for this situation.
00:21:50Like, this just looks, A, mad boring, and B, it looks like, it looks like there's just a
00:21:55host of opportunities for me to make poor choices, as opposed to, like, advance what
00:22:00I should be doing in life.
00:22:01So I was like, I think I'm going to join the Army.
00:22:11Here's everyone.
00:22:12Jess, you have that magazine, or did you already give it to me for that?
00:22:15I gave it.
00:22:16So after serving a year in Korea, I started at the leadership school the next week, and
00:22:21all of us airmen are in this, like, big banquet hall.
00:22:25Jordan was in front of me.
00:22:26I saw him walk in, and, like, his whole posse walks in, and I'm like, who are these people?
00:22:30After selection, it's about a two-year program all in all.
00:22:33You got six months of what they call the apprentice course, six months of just paramedic alone.
00:22:38After I got out of that training, I got stationed at the 23rd Special Tactics Squadron in Herbert
00:22:43Field, Florida.
00:22:44In that place, what happened is I was doing some training there, right?
00:22:48And that's when I snapped my leg, spun my leg on a jump, spin, snap, like, foot turned into a
00:22:54golf club.
00:22:56Finger outside the trigger well.
00:22:58I'm going to check left, check right, and then we'll go into the next one.
00:23:04I was able to study a whole lot.
00:23:05I made sergeant, went to the sergeant school, walked in, and saw the most beautiful woman
00:23:10I've ever seen in my life.
00:23:11Yeah.
00:23:15She was smart.
00:23:16She didn't want anything to do with me, right?
00:23:18But I was clever and charming and patient.
00:23:26And so we went from just friends going through training to over the course of a deployment,
00:23:33like building a friendship, relationship.
00:23:35I got home, I want to say, either right in the beginning of November, somewhere there
00:23:40the same year, and we got pregnant with our son Slade that December.
00:24:12Did you have close moments in combat?
00:24:15Yeah, I was seeing for sure you were under.
00:24:18So, like, 9-11, 2001, I enlisted in 2003, right?
00:24:23Like, we watched 9-11 happen, sitting in homeroom.
00:24:27And so for us, it was very, very much like, I'm definitely going to want to make an impact
00:24:33if I can.
00:24:34So I remember the first time I got shot at, the first time I shot somebody as well, on
00:24:41the ground, we had five different teams of guys, and we had went in and secured, like,
00:24:46this really big compound.
00:24:47We're there to do a counterterrorism job, they're trying to kill us, we're trying to
00:24:51kill them.
00:24:51It's pretty simple, right?
00:24:53I understand why they hate us.
00:24:54That stuff all makes sense to me.
00:24:55It's not lost on me, but I'm called to do the job I'm supposed to do.
00:24:59And so we're getting ready to walk through, and one of the guys that was more senior than
00:25:03me was like, hey, we're going to get shot at when we get out of here.
00:25:06And I was like, all right, sounds good.
00:25:08And he was right.
00:25:16So I hear them coming off, and I'm like, so I remember I dropped down, and I look, and
00:25:22I'm like, oh, this is surprising.
00:25:23And then I can hear, and I'm like, shit, that's bullets coming by my ears, right?
00:25:31I'm like looking, and I'm like, okay, I identify one of the guys that's shooting at us.
00:25:36And I remember I pulled him up in sight, and I just remember thinking, I put my finger on
00:25:40the trigger, and I'm like, all right, this is it.
00:25:43I'm going to take this dude's life.
00:25:45And it wasn't overly difficult for me, because I literally could hear the rounds coming by
00:25:49me.
00:25:49He's there to do a job.
00:25:51I'm there to do a job.
00:25:52My job at the time is to kill this guy.
00:25:53He's trying to kill us.
00:25:54It was pretty simple.
00:25:56And I shot the first one.
00:25:58I definitely missed.
00:25:59It was a cold-bore shot I missed.
00:26:00And then the second round, I shot him.
00:26:03It was clear I killed him.
00:26:04And then there's a weird sense of initial hesitation to shoot somebody.
00:26:17There's just like a small risk analysis that's running through your head.
00:26:24That was the first time.
00:26:25And then subsequent to that, yeah, plenty of times.
00:26:28That was the easiest to remember.
00:26:29But, yeah, you know, guys trying to kill you, and they're trying to kill them.
00:26:52I live in Douglasville, and I lived in, like, not section, specifically section housing,
00:26:58just low-income housing, right, commercialized projects, if you will.
00:27:03Everybody is broke, you know.
00:27:04You had to go in at nighttime pretty much, because there was a high likelihood of crime
00:27:09and those types of things.
00:27:12But I don't have any memory of this, but my biological parents split up when I was real young.
00:27:18And then from there, what happened is my mom met somebody else.
00:27:21I'm not going to ever weigh more than 115.
00:27:28I'm super grateful for the man that my mom married, right?
00:27:31So that's who I call dad.
00:27:33I was adopted by him when I was 16 years old, so my last name changed.
00:27:37Sure.
00:27:43Aw, I love it.
00:27:45He's the most impressive man I've ever met.
00:27:48Your stepfather.
00:27:49Yeah, that's right, that's right.
00:27:51And so he's just not even close.
00:27:54He's incredible.
00:27:55Heavenly Father, we thank you so much for this time together, and all the fathers in the world.
00:27:59It's so special.
00:28:01We're just so grateful that...
00:28:03He was always very loving, and it would definitely always, like, help to let me think through these
00:28:07processes, but he also didn't have a low standard either, you know, and so I'm super grateful for that.
00:28:13And my mom as well.
00:28:14You know, she had a pretty rough upbringing.
00:28:22Both of them, I thought they did an exceptional job as parents, and I'm super grateful for it.
00:28:30Do y'all want to go play first, and then what do y'all want to do?
00:28:33Do you think we have time?
00:28:36My father, Jeff, was a lot different, kind of, in what he did and what that looked like day to
00:28:42day.
00:28:42So, like, for me, it would have been a greater injustice for me to not give credit to who it
00:28:49was that was there
00:28:50and taught me to ride a bike and all those things.
00:28:52But that didn't mean that I hated my biological father.
00:28:55It didn't mean that I disliked my biological father.
00:29:12I know what it feels like to have a dad, right?
00:29:19And that was Jeff, who's raised me since I was a child.
00:29:22The same thing that my children feel with me, I know what that is supposed to feel like.
00:29:26So, what do I call, you know, the relationship that I have with my biological father?
00:29:32I think the closest thing that makes the most sense is, like, an uncle.
00:29:37You know what I mean?
00:29:38Like, somebody that you have a great affinity for, that you care about.
00:29:41Yeah, come on, let's go inside.
00:29:43Yeah.
00:29:46Listen, listen.
00:29:47He was so funny.
00:29:48He was just young.
00:29:49He was just young and made a bad decision.
00:29:51And I think it's a decision most people make, which is tomorrow won't be here.
00:29:56Right?
00:29:57There's always a little more time.
00:29:58I'll get to trying to make sure I invest in this relationship down the road.
00:30:02But there is no tomorrow.
00:30:04You know?
00:30:16My dad worked really hard to be a great dad.
00:30:19And at the same time, he worked about 16 hours a day, five or six days a week.
00:30:24And I remember thinking, as a child, I love him.
00:30:28I'm so grateful for him.
00:30:29He teaches me.
00:30:29And I also wish I saw him more.
00:30:31We can do this after.
00:30:32I will call it Nambalee.
00:30:34If you need one before you go.
00:30:35You can call it Nambalee?
00:30:36If you need one.
00:30:37Okay.
00:30:37And so when I got older, just by proxy, I thought, I want to be successful as much as
00:30:44the next guy, but 18 years isn't that long.
00:30:49So Slade's going to be 16.
00:30:52I think I could have made a lot more money over the last 16 years, for sure, as Jess could
00:30:59have too.
00:30:59But I wouldn't have him the way he is.
00:31:02It's a public school.
00:31:02They probably need it for their people.
00:31:05They pulled it all out of schools.
00:31:06But yeah, it's crazy.
00:31:07Jordan, what's the real reason why you decided to go to law school?
00:31:16Biggest thing for me was COVID.
00:31:19Seriously.
00:31:20More than anything.
00:31:21They shut us down during COVID as they did everywhere else.
00:31:24You know, and we understood why they shut us down in the very beginning, you know, but
00:31:31then as it progressed, it was pretty, pretty interesting and pretty difficult to see like
00:31:36why certain businesses were open and why others weren't.
00:31:39And then we came to a point, we had prayed about it and we were like, we're opening back
00:31:44up.
00:31:44Bye.
00:31:45If you want to come down here and arrest me, you come on.
00:31:51Looking at publicly available material, we found all of this, you know, and yet we still
00:31:56believe we're discovering.
00:31:58America has the best of the broken systems.
00:32:01That's what I think, right?
00:32:02So we're not perfect, but the American legal system is better than everybody else's.
00:32:09I was fine with whatever outcome that happened.
00:32:11Like, I don't care.
00:32:13I mean, if I had to sit in jail for a year to do what's right, it is what it
00:32:16is.
00:32:18At that point, it was like, this is so crazy.
00:32:20There's enough people that will eventually become intolerant.
00:32:24They're going to either pick up a sword or a pen.
00:32:27And so for us, we felt like I'm going to get a law degree and then we can A, stand
00:32:33up for
00:32:33people that otherwise couldn't.
00:32:35And B, I now have the ability to not have to pick up a sword.
00:32:40I can now pick up a pen and stand before.
00:32:42Now to Jordan for the application.
00:32:44Yeah, as Catherine stated already, a company of the magnitude of Bayer should have known.
00:32:50Therefore, they have intended to introduce to the consumer that these statements were
00:32:55reliable.
00:32:56Do you think a law is logical?
00:32:58I think parts of it are very logical.
00:33:00And I think parts of it are just proof that humans are humans.
00:33:06And no matter what, people are flawed.
00:33:09And until you have a culture where everybody's willing to be selfless and serve each other,
00:33:13and at that point, the law is not even needed, then the best you can hope for is a good
00:33:18logical
00:33:18system.
00:33:22That's a wrap.
00:33:24How do you make it perfect?
00:33:25How do you get to this kind of utopian outcome?
00:33:29I don't think you do on this life.
00:33:54It's like 2 a.m.
00:33:56It's the coldest day in Texas in five years.
00:34:02And the pool is where you smash everybody.
00:34:09Every time you're getting smashed, they're holding you under.
00:34:12Guys are passing out.
00:34:13Pull them out.
00:34:14Put them on the deck.
00:34:16Because everybody's tough until you can't breathe.
00:34:23I remember I was diving in.
00:34:25I'm like going under.
00:34:27And it was just a transcended moment for me.
00:34:32I'm swimming.
00:34:34I'm combing.
00:34:35I'm popping up.
00:34:35And it's like it just landed on me.
00:34:43I'm fucking unbreakable.
00:34:56Once I had slayed, there was no way I was going to go back to the military.
00:35:00Even when I first enlisted, I did not have aspirations to be a 20-year soldier.
00:35:05And so for Jess and I, it was simple.
00:35:09I had served my country honorably.
00:35:11And now it was time to make sure that I give all that I can to help prepare this young
00:35:15man
00:35:15for the world.
00:35:16We kind of made a list of all different jobs when he was about to get out.
00:35:21We had like a whiteboard.
00:35:22We had like, kind of like what we have you see all around here.
00:35:25We had a whiteboard.
00:35:25And on the whiteboard, we were like, okay, cool.
00:35:27Like, what jobs could we do where we're together and we could raise kids?
00:35:31And I like wrote down crazy options.
00:35:32We had like bail bondsmen.
00:35:34We had like own a gym.
00:35:36I'm Jessie.
00:35:37If I have an idea, I can welcome you.
00:35:39The route that we ended up choosing was probably the sketchiest route in 2009.
00:35:44But it offered the most amount of time to actually be my wife and son.
00:35:48So right back here is where Jess, Miss Katie Kaye, and Kristen are going to be going over
00:35:53some mind-muscle connection, some glute growth.
00:35:56And so we had this vision of like a playground, literally like an adult playground.
00:36:01Like, let's create an environment that people want to come to.
00:36:04Most out of your core exercises and grow your glute.
00:36:07You're in charge of that shit.
00:36:08It is not in charge of you, ever.
00:36:17He got home and we were open like two weeks later.
00:36:19I mean, we were like literally working night and day.
00:36:22But during this whole time, we lived in the gym.
00:36:24So we cut costs on everything.
00:36:26We sold our one.
00:36:27We went down to one vehicle, but we didn't want to tell anybody we lived in the gym.
00:36:31So it was kind of like a secret to like, oh, this is our office.
00:36:34Like, this is our office.
00:36:36But we lived there.
00:36:36We lived in the gym for two years, I believe.
00:36:41Jess is absolutely instrumental to our success period.
00:36:45I don't think it would have happened for me alone.
00:36:48I'd have probably been contracting, but...
00:36:50Perfect.
00:36:50So I was the seller.
00:36:52I was the one that would sell it because Jordan's like, I'm not doing that.
00:36:54I would coach too, but he would be more of the coach and I would be the seller.
00:36:58Ready, set, go.
00:37:03I wouldn't say she was an introvert, but if you had to put her as a classification, she
00:37:07was an introvert.
00:37:08But the minute we opened the gym, she's like, there's a job to get done here.
00:37:13And she did fantastic.
00:37:16Three, two, one, go.
00:37:20Good.
00:37:22Back then, in 2009, it was like, make them puke and they'll sign up.
00:37:29This was before CrossFit.
00:37:30I mean, CrossFit had just started, but this was before any type of workout like that.
00:37:37The workout was like kettlebell swings, pull-ups, some sit-ups, and maybe a run if they were
00:37:42really in shape.
00:37:48We'd have them all come in one by one and they'd try it out.
00:37:51They'd puke.
00:37:52They'd sign up like that.
00:37:53And then they'd go tell like five more friends, like, you have got to do this workout.
00:37:56You've got to do this workout.
00:37:57It's crazy.
00:37:58And so like the next day, we'd have like five more people that would come in.
00:38:01We'd give them the workout.
00:38:03They'd all throw up.
00:38:04They'd sign up.
00:38:05And we had so, I mean, we grew so fast.
00:38:10And we did not think we were going to grow fast.
00:38:11We had a budget and the budget was, I think it was like we had three months.
00:38:15We didn't get 60 people in three months.
00:38:17We couldn't pay our bills.
00:38:18And so we just grinded.
00:38:21I mean, and then slowly but surely, word of mouth just grew and just grew.
00:38:25And we reached 100 members like so fast.
00:38:29For us, the parts of the military that we loved, we wanted to implement that in our business.
00:38:35Okay, one, it has to make a difference in people's lives.
00:38:39And then number two is this place needs to be a place that when you get off work and you're
00:38:43wiped out and you're tired and you go like, man, I can't wait to go to the gym where I'm
00:38:51going to feel uplifted.
00:38:52Not I have to go to the gym.
00:38:54I want to go to this place.
00:38:55I want to be uplifted.
00:39:18And real quick, bro, you got to test, test, test.
00:39:21Test, test, test.
00:39:24You know, it's caught, not taught.
00:39:28For our kids, we didn't even say, do this.
00:39:32We're just doing it and they start squatting with you.
00:39:37You already know this stuff, so just have fun, right?
00:39:41Presentation.
00:39:41If you see mommy squatting, they want to squat.
00:39:42They see daddy doing push-ups, they drop down to do push-ups.
00:39:45We're staying straight and we're staying very neutral.
00:39:47For Slade, it was definitely natural.
00:39:50You know, it was more modeling.
00:39:53He was with us all the time.
00:39:54And so we'd, you know, when we were living in the gym, a lot of times we'd finish class.
00:39:59So I'd go out and I'd be working on stuff and Slade would follow me and I would have him
00:40:02hold on the rings.
00:40:03He would hang on the rings and we would just play, like literally just play.
00:40:07And I thought, wow, like kids can learn this.
00:40:10Like they're picking up faster than adults.
00:40:13What if you go like this?
00:40:15Three.
00:40:16Squish your arm.
00:40:17I would go lighter than that.
00:40:19That would be neat.
00:40:20Oh, got it.
00:40:21Oh, I got it, got it.
00:40:22So Savage Patch Kids is our fitness app, our kids' fitness app.
00:40:26I've had this dream for a kids' fitness app for probably eight years now.
00:40:32I have seen what it has done for my kids and what strength training has done and how it has
00:40:38just changed their lives in so many different ways.
00:40:43And I feel for kids that don't have that, you know, avenue.
00:40:48They don't even know.
00:40:49And I feel like that was kind of me as a kid.
00:40:51I loved fitness.
00:40:52I would have loved Savage Patch Kids app.
00:40:56Oh, wow, look at that form.
00:40:58That's perfect knees over toes.
00:40:59That is beautiful.
00:41:00And so I thought, how cool would it be if we could create an app and we could teach kids
00:41:05from all over the world how we taught our kids.
00:41:08And we did it, and we did it in a way where maybe you're at home and all you have
00:41:12is like a kettlebell or a dumbbell.
00:41:14Well, that's fine.
00:41:14We can teach you.
00:41:15We can build a strong foundation for you.
00:41:18Two would be like what?
00:41:19Like, uh, maybe elbows forward.
00:41:23What I've seen is only positives.
00:41:26Their confidence is insane.
00:41:29You know, I think they, for Brody, too, especially being a girl, she feels strong.
00:41:34You know, she feels confident.
00:41:35She feels like, okay, like, I got this in life.
00:41:38I can go over there and pick up that barbell.
00:41:40That gives her so much confidence, and I can see that.
00:41:43And I see that in women in the gym every day.
00:41:45So it's not about what you look like.
00:41:47We've never done that with our kids.
00:41:48It's never about what they look like.
00:41:50It's how they feel about themselves.
00:41:52Do they feel strong?
00:41:53Do they feel good?
00:41:59So there are challenges with the app, for sure.
00:42:02One, I feel like is, when we started our gyms, we could go talk to people, right?
00:42:07We could go and say, hey, come to this gym.
00:42:09You're going to love it.
00:42:10For the next 12 weeks, the focus is going to be...
00:42:13But with the internet, it's harder.
00:42:14You only have people's attention spans are like that.
00:42:17So to, like, explain something and only have a short amount of time that people aren't going to swipe is
00:42:23a big challenge.
00:42:26Number two is getting parents to invest.
00:42:30I mean, truthfully, it is.
00:42:32A lot of parents want to just go take them somewhere.
00:42:35And even if a parent doesn't know how to do a perfect deadlift or a perfect squat, you still can
00:42:42learn and you still can grow, right?
00:42:44You can do it with your kiddo.
00:42:46Small instructionals will yield results because now I see Brody enslaved, but I'm telling you, at three and four, they
00:42:52did not move like that.
00:42:54And I think people have a perception that, okay, well, yeah, of course Brody can do that because her parents
00:43:00own a gym and she moves like that.
00:43:03Well, that's not true because Brody didn't move like that.
00:43:06And it took us a lot of years and a lot of patience, of course.
00:43:10People are always going to say something.
00:43:12And you might read a hundred positive comments and you read one negative comment and it will ruin your day.
00:43:22People are always going to think what they think.
00:43:24I think the people that think kids shouldn't work out are one of two things.
00:43:27Either one, they genuinely believe that.
00:43:30They think that there's like an apesial plate issue, a growth plate issue, and kids working out is going to
00:43:34stunt their growth.
00:43:35And the other people are people that either are not working in their kids' lives or they feel inadequate about
00:43:42their own actions.
00:43:43And it's a projection.
00:43:45You shouldn't do that because they're unwilling to do it.
00:43:48And unfortunately, I think that that's the mass majority that will often hide behind the, that's bad for your kids.
00:43:56Just, just, you know what?
00:43:58Just relax hand, keep it there.
00:44:00Ready?
00:44:00Big jump.
00:44:15He gave me just a ton of pointers and advice and stuff so we kind of put it into application.
00:44:20It was super helpful.
00:44:21All right, cool.
00:44:22So, what does this look like?
00:44:23So, let's take just from, and we're talking about on that high cross.
00:44:28So, everything is about me being able to stand next to him.
00:44:48As far back as the kids can remember, they don't have a memory of not being in the gym or
00:44:53active.
00:44:54And I look at it more like, when did you teach your kids to speak?
00:45:04That's really the same thing.
00:45:05We taught our kids to work out the same way you teach them to speak.
00:45:10Basic words, basic movements.
00:45:12More complex words, more complex movements.
00:45:17Two hours of jiu-jitsu training.
00:45:19So, the kiddos are going to train no gi.
00:45:21So, they'll train without their gis on.
00:45:22And then they're going to switch over to their gis and they'll do an hour of gi.
00:45:25And then Jordan and I are going to do an open mat session.
00:45:28So, there'll be other adults there while the kids are competing in gis.
00:45:31We'll be doing open mat jiu-jitsu in our gis, so.
00:45:39They're getting ready for the world competition for jiu-jitsu, which is coming up in July.
00:45:44So, kids from all over the world come to compete in Orlando in July.
00:45:48And they battle for the number one in their age group, their weight, and their belt.
00:46:13We have taught our kids to have grit, right?
00:46:15Like, we don't want our kids to be soft, because the world is tough.
00:46:20Get up, get up, get up!
00:46:26So, we are so thankful when our kids lose at this age, because we teach them it's not about
00:46:31losing.
00:46:31It's not about losing.
00:46:34We have kept zero medals of anything they've competed in.
00:46:38We throw every medal away, because it doesn't matter, because we don't care about that.
00:46:46We're building their character, and they've got to know that there's always going to be
00:46:49another competition, and they can't have that fear of the unknown, because that is what cripples
00:46:54people.
00:47:16My job is to help take care of them.
00:47:20And there's some shit going on in your environment right now that I want you to pay attention to.
00:47:26If you don't pay attention to it long enough, you're going to fucking die.
00:47:30All right.
00:47:51Close your eyes, 30 seconds, I want you to figure out, remind
00:47:54yourself as the sun rises.
00:47:58Why is it that you are here?
00:48:21So, the military needs special operators, right?
00:48:26And so, special operators by nature are special.
00:48:29They're going to go do something that is unique.
00:48:32And you just basically need people that have super high risk tolerance, right?
00:48:38A week before Slade was born, I thought I was going to die.
00:48:42They launched us off on a hurricane rescue mission off the coast of Texas.
00:48:46There was this 564-foot boat that was listing, it's taking on water.
00:48:51And it's got these eight Chinese sailors on board this boat, and they call for the Coast Guard.
00:48:55The Coast Guard's not going to go.
00:48:56They call us, we're going to go.
00:48:57And I remember they called me.
00:49:00I'm at home, like, in pajamas, hanging out with Jess.
00:49:02And I'm like, hey, we need a fixed-wing team leader.
00:49:04Can you come in?
00:49:06I kiss Jess goodbye, and we get on the bird.
00:49:10We're getting ready to go.
00:49:12And I, like, stop for a second, and I'm like, I'm about to fly into a hurricane.
00:49:18Once again, I'm staring at death, right?
00:49:20I'm, like, looking at death, and I'm like, let's go.
00:49:24Get on the airplane.
00:49:25We fly out to Texas.
00:49:27We get out over the water.
00:49:29And, dude, the view of it was nuts.
00:49:34So we're looking out the back of the C-130.
00:49:36And I remember I pull in the three guys that are with me.
00:49:39I'm like, hey, guys, chance of survival is not great.
00:49:43You guys got families?
00:49:45Anybody doesn't want to go?
00:49:47I get it.
00:49:48No, you don't have to go.
00:49:50And they're like, nah, we're going, dude.
00:49:59I hope that my son is okay.
00:50:01That was my thought, you know?
00:50:04I'm never going to see him.
00:50:07I'm good with it.
00:50:08Let's go.
00:50:08And so I made the decision.
00:50:10I was ready to go, and here's what happened.
00:50:11Praise God.
00:50:14We're coming in on kind of the last little leg.
00:50:16The storm's so bad that it ends up ripping the windshield wipers off of the helicopters.
00:50:22So they can't come in and hold a hover.
00:50:24They can't see.
00:50:26So the mission ended up getting canceled at the, like, 11th hour where we're looking at this.
00:50:30It's like, yeah, if we can't get off, there's no reason to go in.
00:50:36And in hindsight, now I get to look back and I go, man, God was so kind to me because
00:50:41he let
00:50:42me just conquer all these things that, like, I think plagued people for a lot of their lives.
00:50:47And he said, I know I'm willing to die.
00:50:54So I was gone about 300 days out of the year, right?
00:50:59But when I would come home, Jess was still the same adult.
00:51:02She was, we were, we worked, we talked through things.
00:51:05Then we had Slade, right?
00:51:09And he would drastically be a new person every time I came home, right?
00:51:14I watched him crawl from Afghanistan.
00:51:17I watched him, you know, learn to walk from TDY and, you know, being on different training things.
00:51:24And I did not feel it was responsible to bring a man into the world and leave him to help
00:51:34sort through it himself.
00:51:46What do you want to do?
00:51:47I'm ASB.
00:51:49Wait, say again?
00:51:50Where are we starting, Jay?
00:51:52Uh, John 14.
00:51:53What is a church, I guess it's a, if you look at it from a legal standpoint.
00:51:57Well, in Christian America it might mean something, but under the laws of what God's calling,
00:52:02a church is me and you talking about jesus as a church you know and so john 14 is a
00:52:08pretty
00:52:08interesting chapter so to give the backstory to that right before this in john 13 jesus i've known
00:52:16since i was pretty young that i had a unique kind of personality so i didn't have like much
00:52:22of an affinity for the church or any of those things both my parents i think called themselves
00:52:28christians and they definitely are now but um we didn't go to church probably for a couple reasons
00:52:34but like we were really poor and i remember like early we went to a church and somebody had something
00:52:42to say to my dad about the way he was dressed right calling him to account for like hey don't
00:52:47you think
00:52:48you ought to dress a little nicer or whatever and so like i have always been super observant i even
00:52:54remember then i'm like what a bunch of phonies what a bunch of hypocrites and so we actually
00:52:59didn't continue to visit churches very much and so what god says in romans is that the revelation
00:53:06of god and the creation of the world is apparent to all men around you
00:53:21it took probably about two years um once he was out and then he became a believer and it's like
00:53:28i
00:53:28think that really helped him to you know believe in god and understand that there's a reason why things
00:53:33happen and so you know i was just praying that something would happen and then at the gym which
00:53:40is funny a guy joined this guy was a believer and he was not like what jordan saw at church
00:53:47he was
00:53:47different jordan was like i'm gonna read the whole bible he goes i'm gonna read the whole bible because
00:53:53i don't believe it's true i'm gonna read this bible to teach him a lesson and the other side of
00:53:57me
00:53:58because i think there's a dichotomy in all of us the other side of me is like maybe i'm wrong
00:54:02maybe there's something that's gonna change my life here who knows and she has made a commitment
00:54:07to follow christ and be baptized is that right yes awesome and so i thought what we would so i
00:54:13started reading the book of john i read john one and then in john two it's wild it was the
00:54:20first time
00:54:20for me i was like whoa they don't look like soft jesus i could get down with that jesus yeah
00:54:26i mean
00:54:26we're two chapters in and he's he stands for something he read the entire bible and that's when
00:54:32he believed he's like no i believe like it's it's true like i i see it
00:54:42growing up in the streets of atlanta gave me a short temper and so as like i grew up i
00:54:48had a very
00:54:49short temper because i didn't have a tolerance built up to be able to deal with those things
00:54:53right so i had to learn some of that and really what happened for me was as i started actually
00:54:58reading the bible and i made a commitment shortly thereafter that i'd read the bible
00:55:03every single day and i have now for like 12 13 years and the the hole the void that roller
00:55:10coaster
00:55:10happens for happiness close right so i feel a sense of peace and contentment that materialism just can't
00:55:19fulfill like i can be in anything in life and it's perfectly okay with me
00:55:49the last year of our life it was a pretty interesting year i would say um
00:55:55um
00:55:56after kovan we kind of changed our life sold our house lived in an rv for an entire year
00:56:11living in an rv full time is not like going on vacation in an rv it was scary in a
00:56:17canadian
00:56:23so you're not entertained no i'm not rowdy it was supposed to be fun when we bought the rv we
00:56:29definitely still found moments of fun and it was a collective decision but like hey i'm going to
00:56:34uproot you from your house and we're going to go travel around and kind of like the materiality of
00:56:38what that looks like can change but i get to live in every socioeconomic class and you know what i
00:56:45learned none of them are the ones that make you happy it's your mindset who you're with so you
00:56:51have a lot of memories as a family yeah i knew that this time was not going to stop and
00:56:57i had better
00:56:59take advantage of spending time with them and so that was the goal it was super fun but it was
00:57:04challenging of course too because you know we all kind of work from home we do school from home
00:57:08so you know a year was a year was enough a year was awesome hey buddy hey cutie is it
00:57:17super hot
00:57:20it's harder than the springs definitely so when we came back from our year of rv life we were trying
00:57:28to find a spot to live and the economy is pretty rough right now so we've you know been praying
00:57:32for the last couple years to find the right spot that fits our family and we finally found it all
00:57:38right
00:57:38so we are going to go to see the goats first and probably the chickens i would say the last
00:57:44year
00:57:44was a lot of hard work and patience a lot of patience for sure and i speak goat
00:57:50then you want to check out the chickens bro yeah so that's cock diesel he's our big rooster
00:57:56and then i forgot his name what's his he's i is it russell crow
00:58:17and then you gave yourself no option and just rock
00:58:25and then you gave yourself nature all right warm back in those three lines
00:58:37take all that night
00:58:52oh
00:59:01you do look like a young
00:59:03Jack wants to get done.
00:59:05Look, this is not going to change, Steve.
00:59:11Get the head underneath.
00:59:13Get the head underneath.
00:59:15Yo, hold back, yo.
00:59:16Hold a second.
00:59:17I need some cake instead.
00:59:25I need some cake instead.
00:59:27I need some cake instead.
00:59:31Proenga ii.
00:59:47It was after Covid, right?
00:59:48We did the RV trip and, um,
00:59:52I ended up getting, like, a weird rash from Jiu Jitsu.
00:59:55Like, you can get a lot of, like, different things.
00:59:57Jiu Jitsu, right?
00:59:58And so I had this weird rash. I went to the doctor. He gave me a pill. I took it
01:00:03for 10 days.
01:00:04And I told Jordan, I don't feel right. You know, I don't feel right.
01:00:08You know, it's like you drink alcohol or something and you're like, intellectually, you're still there.
01:00:13But like chemically, you know, things have changed. It's like that in the exact opposite direction.
01:00:21Welcome. Come on in.
01:00:24My hormones tank. I've never had an issue. I've never been ultra emotional. I've never been depressed.
01:00:30Like, I've never understood. What do you mean you're depressed? Like, just do something, right?
01:00:35She was just like in a perpetual sense of anxiety.
01:00:41She loved me. She was so great to the kids, but I could just see the pain in her.
01:00:45And it was terrible for me, for sure.
01:01:02I felt ultra depressed. I was like, I don't know what's going on.
01:01:14Jessie's one of the most stoic people I've ever met. That's been her personality forever.
01:01:20I, dude, I remember we were in Arkansas. This is so unlike Jess, but...
01:01:32And she's like, hey, I'm just, I just got to go for a walk or something.
01:01:35And so, she's going for a walk. She's walking around.
01:01:40It's been a little longer than, like, I expected to see her.
01:01:43I find her and she's, like, crying.
01:01:46And she goes, she's like, I feel so off.
01:01:51She goes, like, I don't even care if I live or die right now.
01:01:56And I know that's not normal. That's not right.
01:01:58Like, intellectually, she knew it wasn't right.
01:02:00But, like, emotionally, I think we just started praying.
01:02:04I started praying with her.
01:02:08You know, when your hormones tank like that, you, it's rough for women.
01:02:12You know, it's really, it was really, really hard.
01:02:14Like I said, I've never been depressed.
01:02:15And now I understand when people say that they have depression.
01:02:19I never thought, like, oh, I don't want to be here.
01:02:22But I was like, Jordan, I'm having thoughts of, like, I don't care.
01:02:30I realized that there was no level of convincing her.
01:02:34I just had to be more certain that she was going to be okay than she was uncertain.
01:02:40And so I just leaned into the fact that, Jess, I know you're afraid I'm not.
01:02:46You're going to be okay.
01:02:50And 10,000 times later, her cycling ended up kicking back in.
01:02:54And she felt drastically different, you know, and a lot of stuff changed.
01:03:00It was definitely a hard time for her.
01:03:01It's hard for all of us.
01:03:08I love her, and as shitty as it is, and as shitty as it feels, I knew that she was
01:03:17going to come out a level of stronger that she's never even experienced herself.
01:03:23And she did.
01:03:40Awesome, so today we're out here with Brent Riviera and the Amp World crew.
01:03:44They're going to be going through a little bit of a day in the life of the Bowens.
01:03:50Did I put my hand in front of your face?
01:03:55Look at that.
01:03:58That's pretty wild.
01:04:04What's up?
01:04:10Yeah, man, we're having a lot of fun.
01:04:12It's obviously a whole lot different than what we're used to on a day in and day out.
01:04:15So, like, so much of what we do is, like, realistically what you can integrate into your life, what's a
01:04:20lot of fun.
01:04:22So, what we're doing here is just a giant caricature of that.
01:04:26Here you go.
01:04:27Yo, 12 is actually aggressive.
01:04:29Oh, my God.
01:04:31Two.
01:04:32Yeah.
01:04:33Ah.
01:04:33Ten.
01:04:34It's, like, so much fun because we just get to do, like, out of the ordinary, well, we do stuff
01:04:39that we do, but, like, out of the ordinary.
01:04:40It was just so much fun.
01:04:42So much fun.
01:04:43All right, here we go.
01:04:44Three, two, one.
01:04:46The Bowen family has been doing fantastic.
01:04:49Um, they've been absolutely killing it.
01:04:50We've been, um, filming a lot these last few hours and they've been just on it.
01:04:55Um, they've been quick with, like, the jokes and things like that.
01:04:58All right, and we're gonna prove to you.
01:04:59Yeah.
01:05:00All right.
01:05:00You, two.
01:05:00Come on.
01:05:01Come on.
01:05:02Come on.
01:05:05Come on.
01:05:06Come on.
01:05:06They have been literally amazing right from the start of the get-go.
01:05:10They've been just providing the lines.
01:05:13They're so, um, enthusiastic about being here and being a part of this.
01:05:16So, um, yeah, they're doing a great job.
01:05:24You don't want to miss our next time call, and instead, we're gonna stay here through
01:05:47that iteration.
01:05:48Hurry the fuck up, let's go.
01:05:58Up.
01:06:00Down.
01:06:02Let's go.
01:06:08Stop.
01:06:09Hurry it up, hurry it up, hurry it up, hurry it up.
01:06:16London Bridge has fallen, let's go.
01:06:18Shimmy down, shimmy down.
01:06:20Hey, you either have to do it, or you get to do it.
01:06:24Mindset is everything, where we at?
01:06:27Give me a ruck, let's go, hurry up.
01:06:28Let's go, double time, let's get going.
01:06:33Let's go, let's go.
01:06:44Let's go.
01:06:46Let's go.
01:06:46Hurry up, let's go.
01:06:47Hurry up.
01:06:48Woo.
01:06:49Yeah.
01:06:51Not quick.
01:06:54I got to lay down.
01:06:56I got to lay down.
01:06:56Poswell, get up, you're a medic.
01:06:58Don't lay down.
01:07:01Watch out, move.
01:07:02Everybody move, please.
01:07:08So, after the military, this was probably a few years after he got a call from a friend
01:07:14that said, have you heard of anti-human trafficking?
01:07:17I know the slides they made us do in the military, that's supposed to be a thing.
01:07:23So, human trafficking, for lack of a better definition, is exploiting humans for monetary gain.
01:07:33In the States, the American legal system is kind of difficult to even help anybody, even
01:07:38people that are in these situations.
01:07:40So, where a lot of the anti-trafficking and stuff happens is overseas as well.
01:07:49He went to Africa, we went to Uganda in Africa.
01:07:55Uganda is interesting, that's for sure.
01:07:57Beautiful country, beautiful people, interesting.
01:08:01We got called there because we were hearing reports of child sacrifice, kind of the witch
01:08:08doctor thing, and massive amounts of young women, kind of teenage women, that were getting
01:08:13shipped to Saudi Arabia.
01:08:20So, we got into the country, we ended up working with some really local, trusted assets, and
01:08:26weirdly enough, we helped them build some businesses.
01:08:29Businesses for good guys, to give the women jobs and stuff to do in Uganda.
01:08:36If they don't have some way to have an economy, then they're going to let themselves get shipped
01:08:42off.
01:08:45So, we did a pretty wild system, and that's kind of the soft way.
01:08:48It's like, sometimes you want to just go kick in a door and save people, and sometimes
01:08:51you're like, we've got to figure out how to solve this problem another way.
01:08:54Yeah, say hello.
01:08:55Say hello to Brody.
01:08:57Hello to Brody.
01:08:58Yeah.
01:08:59He went to Nepal, and then he went to Ukraine with the anti-human trafficking, and that was
01:09:05incredible.
01:09:06I don't really ask too much about that because I don't want to know the details, because
01:09:09it is pretty rough and sad.
01:09:18Before the war started, there's American nonprofits that were already working with
01:09:25orphanages in Ukraine to try to get kids to be adopted to different American citizens,
01:09:33or just to find homes.
01:09:39When the war started, nobody cared about them, of course.
01:09:48And so, these nonprofits in America were like, how are we going to get these people out of
01:09:54the danger zone?
01:09:55Because, like, all the way over in the East, we got contacted by these different nonprofits,
01:10:02a multitude of them, and they were like, hey, can you guys go in and get them out?
01:10:11We've got, like, hundreds, and we had hundreds of widows and orphans that are trapped, and we
01:10:18got the wildest reports.
01:10:19Like, you know, all the bad stuff you kind of hear about in terms of, like, people being
01:10:24raped, all that.
01:10:25It's all real.
01:10:26It's all happening, right?
01:10:27And so, I go tell Jess, I'm like, hey, Jess, how do you feel about me going to Ukraine
01:10:35to get in between the flots, is what they're called, the forward line of troops?
01:10:39So, you got the Russian troops coming in, Ukrainian troops coming in.
01:10:42They're trying to kill each other.
01:10:43This is where we're going in to pull people out.
01:10:46Gather these people up, bring them back.
01:10:48Gather them up, bring them back.
01:10:49Gather them up, bring them back.
01:10:50Put them on trains.
01:10:51Get them to the West.
01:10:51So, I'm like, Jess, how do you feel about that?
01:10:53And she's like, did you pray about it?
01:10:57And I did.
01:10:58Yeah, sounds good.
01:11:00So, I'm like, all right, I'm not going to die, because God told me to do it.
01:11:02I'm sure of it.
01:11:09Traveling towards the capital, current state of situation is this dark.
01:11:17We were in six days after the war started.
01:11:32The entire country is blacked out.
01:11:34There's artillery coming down.
01:11:36Russian tanks on fire.
01:11:46Shit's bad.
01:11:47Danger left and right.
01:11:49Trying not to get shot by the Ukrainians, right?
01:11:51Trying not to get shot by the Russians.
01:11:53And we didn't have a dog in the fight.
01:11:55We were just there to pull people out.
01:11:57All right, Redcon fam.
01:11:58Heading up.
01:11:59You could probably hear the air raids in the background.
01:12:02So, they're dropping, actively dropping right now.
01:12:05Too easy.
01:12:06I'm going to go get it in.
01:12:12If you want to know a wild moment from that one.
01:12:16We pull up to this house.
01:12:18We get out.
01:12:18We can hear on the distance.
01:12:20We can hear what's happening.
01:12:21We can hear the tanks.
01:12:22We can hear stuff happening.
01:12:23And we pull up.
01:12:24And we're like, hey, come on.
01:12:26And there's a husband and wife there.
01:12:30She has her children.
01:12:31And then she has these orphans with them.
01:12:34Right?
01:12:34And I'm watching her husband and her say goodbye to each other.
01:12:39And it was unreal, man.
01:12:41Because it was like, for sure, this fucking dude's dead right now.
01:12:46Right?
01:12:47It's like how close they were.
01:12:49And, like, I got to just, weirdly enough, I watched them, like, say goodbye with a certainty.
01:12:55Because the men couldn't leave.
01:12:56So, I mean, war sucks.
01:13:13We get them in the van.
01:13:15We get them back behind the lines.
01:13:17And it was just, like, hours of silence.
01:13:20I mean, there's nothing you can say.
01:13:21I mean, you don't even know what to say.
01:13:23You know?
01:13:28Just to watch them say goodbye was crazy.
01:13:44And I remember driving.
01:13:46I was, I mean, I was scared.
01:13:49I had a very real sense that this might be it.
01:14:01So I wasn't scared.
01:14:02I was just, like, taking on the magnitude of, like, dang.
01:14:06All right.
01:14:06Slade's this old.
01:14:08Rhodey's this old.
01:14:08If I get killed right now, it's probably going to be all right.
01:14:12God's got a plan.
01:14:14But it was like, I'm probably, this could be it.
01:14:17Because this, it was nuts.
01:14:19I'm probably going to fucking die right now.
01:14:21And I remember asking God, like, God, I feel like I got more to put into those kids' life before
01:14:28now.
01:14:28So what's going to happen?
01:14:30Because I don't want to be foolish either.
01:14:32I don't, I'm not the guy who goes, like, I got to go save people.
01:14:36Fuck my family.
01:14:37That's not me.
01:14:39I'm the guy that goes, if God tells me to go, I'm going to go.
01:14:42And now we're coming into the 11th hour where the real, the real hell's about to start.
01:14:47And I just remember going, like, God, if I'm going to go in here and not serve your will, I
01:14:52don't want to do that.
01:14:52So do you want me to go?
01:14:54And it was like.
01:14:58A fire of certainty.
01:15:08Honestly, the biggest thing I prayed about, that I wouldn't have to kill anybody.
01:15:14I'm here to just save people.
01:15:17I don't have a dog in this fight.
01:15:20I hope that nobody puts me in a position.
01:15:22I got to kill them.
01:15:25Because I would have.
01:15:26I was coming home.
01:15:28Like, I'm going to figure out how to get back to Jess and the kids.
01:15:35God won't have his glory to make manifest by cowards.
01:15:47Life is war.
01:15:50It is war.
01:15:53There's deception and evil out there.
01:15:57To avoid criticism.
01:15:59To avoid criticism.
01:16:01Say nothing.
01:16:03Do nothing.
01:16:07Be nothing.
01:16:10Be nothing.
01:16:16All pain is temporary.
01:16:19It doesn't matter what's before you.
01:16:23Success is the only way.
01:16:27You burn the ships and you take the island.
01:16:35You want to be great.
01:16:36You want to make a name for yourself.
01:16:39From your actions and not the way that you describe yourself.
01:16:43Then that is going to involve natural fears.
01:16:48That is the path to greatness.
01:16:50Let's go!
01:16:53Let's go!
01:16:56Let's go!
01:16:58Let's go!
01:17:01Let's go!
01:17:02Let's go!
01:17:03Down!
01:17:05Three!
01:17:06Four!
01:17:08Five!
01:17:10Down!
01:17:12Six!
01:17:13On your backs!
01:17:14On your backs!
01:17:16Let's go!
01:17:17Let's go!
01:17:20Feet at the wall!
01:17:21Let's go!
01:17:24We're covered!
01:17:26Stand the fuck up! Let's go!
01:17:27Stand up!
01:17:30On your backs!
01:17:33Turn that fucking music down!
01:17:35Turn that fucking down!
01:17:42Team about face!
01:17:43Let's go!
01:17:49Let's go!
01:17:53Yeah!
01:17:56Yeah!
01:17:57Yeah!
01:17:59Yeah!
01:18:01Yeah!
01:18:02Yeah!
01:18:03Yeah!
01:18:04Gentlemen, be a light in the world.
01:18:09As you step forward!
01:18:10You are that motherfucker!
01:18:12Hoo-yah!
01:18:13Hoo-yah!
01:18:14Thank you guys for your time!
01:18:16If you guys want some feedback, hoo-yah!
01:18:18But right now, let's put our hands together!
01:18:20You guys fucking got it done!
01:18:21Let's fucking go!
01:18:22Brother Steve and do what?
01:18:23Good job!
01:18:23Woo-yah!
01:18:25Woo-yah!
01:18:26Woo-yah!
01:18:29Thank you!
01:18:31Thank you!
01:18:34Bring it in!
01:18:35Bring it in!
01:18:36We're all right, by the way!
01:18:36Yeah, we're all right.
01:18:37I love you.
01:18:37Yeah, I love you.
01:18:37Yeah, I love you.
01:18:38Yeah, I love you.
01:19:07You are a dog on a different level.
01:19:13I have seen you in dog fights with people.
01:19:17You have an uncommon level of being comfortable with the uncomfortable.
01:19:23I just encourage you to stay in that setting.
01:19:28What I want to do after I graduate is go be a PJ like my dad because I like that
01:19:35job where it's like helping people.
01:19:38And then probably after the military, I want to go become like a lawyer like my dad so I can
01:19:43help people there too.
01:19:45Yeah, I am definitely going to be sad when he leaves, but I know that he will be having fun.
01:19:50So as long as he's having fun, I'm glad that he's going to be in the military because I know
01:19:55he wants to do that.
01:19:57And he like he loves survival and he loves stuff like that.
01:20:00So I will be sad, but I'm glad he'll be having a good time.
01:20:08You know, you're looking at going in the military.
01:20:10What's that look like?
01:20:11Definitely be a PJ.
01:20:12Yeah.
01:20:12Probably do the reserves so I can do school as well.
01:20:15Why do you think you want to be a J?
01:20:17Be able to jump out of planes, do med stuff to help people.
01:20:22Yeah, yeah.
01:20:22Scenarios like rescues and stuff.
01:20:24Yeah, obviously your mom and I believe in you.
01:20:28Going into the world, you're going to experience a lot of challenges.
01:20:33But most of those will be to try to get you to be different in the way that you know
01:20:42you're supposed to be.
01:20:43And some people will hate you.
01:20:47Such is life.
01:20:52What do you think will be some of your biggest challenges as you press forward?
01:20:56What do you think selection is going to be like?
01:20:58Do you think it's going to be similar to the never quit course?
01:21:01Probably mostly.
01:21:02Yeah, right.
01:21:03You're going to walk in and there will be guys that are in better shape than you.
01:21:08Right.
01:21:08Like I had Olympic swimmers there.
01:21:11Yeah.
01:21:11Incredible shape.
01:21:14But they lack the characteristic of selflessness to the point of death.
01:21:25Jesus says, go sell your tunic and buy a sword.
01:21:29In the same way that you have to be prepared to be capable of violence so that you can be
01:21:35peaceful.
01:21:36Yeah.
01:21:36You know what I mean?
01:21:43You know, it's funny, if you ask any operator, they'll tell you the same thing.
01:21:49Most of my memories are of our epic failures.
01:21:54Whenever I got out of the military, you know what the absolute central reason for that was?
01:22:00It was you.
01:22:02Right.
01:22:04So I'm gone 300 days out of the year at the time.
01:22:07And the reason I got out was because I was shucking my responsibility to not give you the character that
01:22:15I believe that should have arrived to you.
01:22:18Right.
01:22:21The greatest accomplishment that I can have in this life is to develop character in my children.
01:22:27And when I look at your character, you're so far ahead of where I was at your age, like 15
01:22:33years ahead.
01:22:35You know, the sky is the limit for you, man.
01:22:37You can do anything that you want to do, so long as you will be selfless, maintain discipline, and hold
01:22:45your integrity in the face of all adversity.
01:22:50Walk softly and carry a big stick, son.
01:22:54Nobody is going to live your life but you.
01:22:57Yeah.
01:22:58So you can't live your life for the perception of others.
01:23:03You know what I mean?
01:23:04Yeah.
01:23:04I love you, man.
01:23:05Love you, too.
01:23:18Love you, too.
01:23:43Love you, too.
