00:00:05We're going to talk about, I don't know, it's near and dear to our hearts, Yamaha 250 Production Racers.

00:00:12Now, Kevin's spanning 1961 to 2009. I have a narrower band.

00:00:17And I would say I don't have experience with Production Racers, except that I have experience with Yamaha 70s two

00:00:25-strokes,

00:00:25which were like the Production Racers. Everything would swap over.

00:00:30If I wanted to put a TZ350 cylinder on top of my RD350 engine cases, liquid cooled, I could do

00:00:38that.

00:00:38But I'd have to put a water pump in the oil pump arena, correct?

00:00:42Yes.

00:00:43But see, it's all...

00:00:44That would slide right on the studs.

00:00:45It's...

00:00:46That was...

00:00:47So, Kevin's going to obviously add a lot here, but I am...

00:00:51I was always delighted that somehow my...

00:00:55Exactly, there it is.

00:00:57That somehow my RD350 had anything to do with a TZ750 was spectacular.

00:01:04I felt connected, you know?

00:01:09Take us back, Kevin.

00:01:12Well...

00:01:15When Yamaha got out of the phase of can we succeed in Japanese business and realized that we have to

00:01:27get into export

00:01:28because in business, if you're not growing, you're slowing, you're shrinking.

00:01:35And so it was decided, of course, to use racing as a promotional tool.

00:01:41Two programs were initiated.

00:01:47One with engineers Hata and Naito were charged with developing a 125 and a 250 Grand Prix bike for European

00:02:03FIM Grand Prix racing.

00:02:07And another group were to invade the U.S. racing scene in conformity with the AMA's...

00:02:19It has to be sort of production.

00:02:25And like the wonderful distinction, yes, the racing parts are listed in the parts book,

00:02:32that the AMA did not tell us we have to sell any.

00:02:37And we're not.

00:02:39So...

00:02:40Well, that was the secret handshake, right?

00:02:41You could only get them if you were the chosen.

00:02:45Already in, yes.

00:02:46Absolutely.

00:02:48So...

00:02:50Yamaha and Honda and Suzuki had been going at it in the volcano races, the Mount Osama and so forth,

00:03:01and which were cinder surface.

00:03:06And we've talked before about how Honda, with their four-strokes,

00:03:11had absolutely to have RPM tolerance in their engines,

00:03:14had to go to four valves because what happens on a loose surface,

00:03:19your tack is always banging on the pin.

00:03:22But with a two-stroke, it's...

00:03:25There's no power above peak revs,

00:03:29and so it's not an issue.

00:03:35So they had built a variety of machines initially

00:03:41that were based on their examination of the German Adler,

00:03:45which was a parallel twin.

00:03:47The Adler had some German features,

00:03:49like the two crankshafts.

00:03:51How do we join them together?

00:03:53So they used radial hearth-type splines

00:03:59with the whole thing drawn together by a draw bolt,

00:04:02access to which was tricky in itself.

00:04:09But that's how they did it.

00:04:10And when Yamaha decided that they were going to build a twin, YD-1,

00:04:19they had already built the YA singles, 125s, for a while.

00:04:27But YD-1 was going to be a twin,

00:04:32and they decided that it would be an all-press-fit crankshaft.

00:04:36There would be no maniacal machine-shop techniques used.

00:04:41It was just going to be banging together in the press,

00:04:44knock it straight like they're playing a xylophone with big hammers,

00:04:49and then just push it all together.

00:04:54These early engines had vertically split crankcases,

00:04:58which meant that to get a decently close fit of the bearings

00:05:04and the seal on the center block and all these different parts,

00:05:09there had to be special tools for laboriously drawing it all together.

00:05:16And if it didn't shift, once you've got it all together,

00:05:19you had to take it all apart again.

00:05:23So this was a built-in set of drawbacks.

00:05:28But they decided they were going to compete in U.S. races,

00:05:32and they sent some bikes to Catalina,

00:05:35where there were annual events.

00:05:39And I believe somebody won the 250 class on a scooter once.

00:05:45So it was possibly MIC, KEY, etc.

00:05:52But they wanted to get in and start playing.

00:05:57So there was a variety of sort of fits and starts.

00:06:02The early engines had iron cylinders.

00:06:04The carburetors mounted on the crankcase,

00:06:07and half of the cylinder was set down into the case.

00:06:11So the cylinders were only about halfway finned.

00:06:17That had to go.

00:06:19So they made cylinders with the carburetors bolted to the back of them

00:06:23and the exhaust coming out the front.

00:06:26And four studs for each cylinder.

00:06:28Slide the cylinder on, head gasket, cylinder head,

00:06:32four nuts, jit, jit, jit, jit, jit, you're done.

00:06:36And this was the wonderful thing about two-strokes,

00:06:38was you could change a piston.

00:06:41If you were hot, you could have it running again in 15 minutes.

00:06:47So, and I think that many did,

00:06:50because the problem with the early engines was piston temperature.

00:06:55With a two-stroke,

00:06:57two-stroke fires every time the piston comes near top dead center,

00:07:01which means double the heating of a four-stroke.

00:07:06Not quite double, but a lot.

00:07:10And this meant that they wanted you to fit the piston closely

00:07:16so that it could have intimate thermal contact with the cooler cylinder,

00:07:22cast iron.

00:07:23I don't know if it's cooler.

00:07:26But it just took time for this sort of thing to shake out.

00:07:30And meanwhile,

00:07:32the European race department is having its problems.

00:07:38And as we know,

00:07:40separately,

00:07:42Suzuki had gained some information from Germany

00:07:46through an episode of Daring Do,

00:07:52people stealing out of East Germany

00:07:55in the space between the trunk and the rear seat.

00:07:59It was terribly dramatic.

00:08:01And the upshot there was iron liners.

00:08:06But Yamaha proceeded in the direction of

00:08:10how can we reduce the expansion coefficient

00:08:13of an aluminum cylinder?

00:08:18They,

00:08:20and of course,

00:08:21the piston,

00:08:22so that they didn't end up with a situation

00:08:24where the piston grew,

00:08:26but the cylinder didn't,

00:08:28or vice versa.

00:08:29And they developed what were called hyper-eutectic,

00:08:34meaning a greater content of the alloying element,

00:08:38in this case,

00:08:39silicon,

00:08:40than the mixture of aluminum and silicon

00:08:43that would have the minimum melting point.

00:08:46So they ended up with 20-odd percent silicon.

00:08:52And they started out with anodizing the cylinder wall.

00:08:58Once they got rid of cast iron,

00:09:00of course,

00:09:00they had

00:09:03relative thermal advancement.

00:09:06Because iron is,

00:09:08it's heavy.

00:09:10It conducts heat only

00:09:11like one-third as well

00:09:13as aluminum.

00:09:14And it's,

00:09:15it's good for something

00:09:17that's going to operate

00:09:18at moderate power

00:09:19for a long time.

00:09:22And

00:09:23so they

00:09:24switched to aluminum.

00:09:26They tried the anodized surface

00:09:28to

00:09:29make the cylinder walls

00:09:31hard enough

00:09:31for the rings and pistons

00:09:33to slide against.

00:09:35It sort of worked.

00:09:36Don Vesco set

00:09:37an 89-mile-per-hour

00:09:39one-lap record

00:09:40at Daytona.

00:09:42Not in an AMA race.

00:09:44Outlaw.

00:09:44He was riding outlaw.

00:09:46That's the way

00:09:47they talked about it

00:09:48in those days,

00:09:48as though it were

00:09:49some kind of

00:09:50hereditary

00:09:52defect

00:09:53of personality.

00:09:54If you're not with

00:09:55the AMA,

00:09:56you're outlaw.

00:09:58So,

00:10:00they switched

00:10:01to porous

00:10:02chromium plating

00:10:04directly on the aluminum.

00:10:07And

00:10:08the anodized

00:10:10domestic racer

00:10:11based on

00:10:12YDS-2

00:10:13crankcase

00:10:14was

00:10:15TD-1A.

00:10:18And

00:10:20TD-1A

00:10:22had a dreadful

00:10:23gearbox

00:10:24like most

00:10:25street bikes

00:10:26need to have

00:10:27a very low first.

00:10:29Yourself,

00:10:30your girlfriend,

00:10:31the stuff

00:10:32you're taking

00:10:33to the Cape,

00:10:34uphill stoplight,

00:10:36how am I going

00:10:37to get going?

00:10:39Just

00:10:39make the

00:10:40gear on the

00:10:41front shaft

00:10:42real small

00:10:43and a big

00:10:44one on the

00:10:44back shaft,

00:10:45which meant

00:10:45on the track

00:10:47it was a

00:10:47four-speed

00:10:48because you

00:10:48would never

00:10:49shift into

00:10:49that

00:10:51gear.

00:10:53So,

00:10:54TD-1A

00:10:55and the

00:10:56yellow tanker

00:10:58and the

00:11:00YDS-1R

00:11:01and the other

00:11:01things that went

00:11:02before it

00:11:04were

00:11:05sort of

00:11:06trial balloons

00:11:07I think I

00:11:08saw one of

00:11:09the

00:11:09one of

00:11:10the bikes

00:11:11with the

00:11:11early style

00:11:12gas tank

00:11:13which had

00:11:14knee notches

00:11:15with black

00:11:15rubber

00:11:16grips

00:11:17so that you

00:11:18could hang

00:11:19on to the

00:11:20motorcycle with

00:11:21your knees

00:11:21as well as

00:11:22with your

00:11:22feet and

00:11:24your hands.

00:11:26So,

00:11:26by the time

00:11:28they got to

00:11:28TD-1A

00:11:29they had

00:11:31decided

00:11:32we're going

00:11:33to use

00:11:33the chassis

00:11:34from the

00:11:35European race

00:11:36team

00:11:37RD-48

00:11:38which was

00:11:39a rotary

00:11:40a disc

00:11:40valve

00:11:41intake

00:11:42parallel

00:11:43twin

00:11:44which

00:11:48was their

00:11:49first try

00:11:49in

00:11:50GP racing

00:11:51and in

00:11:5262

00:11:53they took

00:11:55a year

00:11:55off because

00:11:56there were

00:11:56economic

00:11:57reverses

00:11:58and what

00:11:59have you

00:11:59but in

00:12:0063

00:12:01they came

00:12:02back

00:12:02with

00:12:03chrome

00:12:03cylinders

00:12:04now this

00:12:05is in

00:12:05Europe

00:12:05chrome

00:12:06cylinders

00:12:08hyperutectic

00:12:17follow-on

00:12:19to the

00:12:19RD-48

00:12:20which is

00:12:26at Spa

00:12:27which has

00:12:28long

00:12:28straightaways

00:12:30and once

00:12:31they got

00:12:32enough

00:12:33float bowl

00:12:35four float

00:12:36bowls on

00:12:36it before

00:12:37they could

00:12:37get enough

00:12:38fuel to

00:12:38the carburetors

00:12:40it just

00:12:41motored away

00:12:42from the

00:12:43Honda 4

00:12:44of the

00:12:44official team

00:12:46so

00:12:47two-stroke

00:12:48maybe not

00:12:49so shabby

00:12:51because up

00:12:52to this

00:12:52point

00:12:53people had

00:12:53acted as

00:12:54well

00:12:56MZ

00:12:56in

00:12:57East

00:12:58Germany

00:12:59a thing

00:12:59is fast

00:13:00until it

00:13:00sticks

00:13:02and

00:13:03they're

00:13:04really weird

00:13:04bikes

00:13:05they come

00:13:05out with

00:13:05all this

00:13:06prototype

00:13:06stuff

00:13:07and

00:13:07they never

00:13:08put any

00:13:09points

00:13:09together

00:13:09so you

00:13:10just don't

00:13:11have to

00:13:11think about

00:13:11those guys
