Mindy Kaling has filled the lead role for her untitled coming-of-age comedy at Netflix.

00:13Newcomer Maitreyi Ramakrishnan has landed the leading role in the streaming platform's
00:17upcoming sitcom about a modern-day, first-generation South Asian American teenage girl
00:22which is set to be inspired by Kaling's own childhood. Kaling will serve as a writer,
00:26executive producer and showrunner in the yet-to-be-named comedy and Netflix already gave it a
00:31straight-to-series order for 10 episodes. Ramakrishnan will be making her screen debut as
00:37Davey, an overachieving high school sophomore who has a short fuse that puts her in some
00:41sticky situations. Kaling originally called for an open casting call for a number of leading
00:45roles for the upcoming series and according to the actress herself, the casting notice
00:49drew in thousands of responses and close to 15,000 audition tapes were sent in. At the time
00:55of her casting, Ramakrishnan had no representation but is now repped by Sandra Gillis
00:59of Premier Artist Management in Toronto. No word yet on who else Kaling has casted in the series
01:04and although a release date has yet to be set, the show is currently in pre-production
