02:14Seven-footers are everywhere and their game is dunkerific.
02:17In this edition of Who's Number One, ESPN Classic Combs Through Pro Basketball's story
02:23passed and its glittering present to rank the 20 best NBA teams of all time.
02:32The opposition asked for their autographs after losing by 60.
02:37Such was the appeal of the team representing America in the 1992 Olympics, the first games
02:42open to the pros.
02:43The marquee was a blaze.
02:45MJ, Magic, Lee.
02:47I don't think an Olympic team counts as an NBA team.
02:51Larry Legend, Sir Charles, and on and on.
02:54The dream team in 92, the original, the best, the only, the first.
02:59They were the epitome of playing the game correctly and playing the game well.
03:04They're behind the basketball.
03:06This was about those few moments where Michael would get a touch, and then Magic would get
03:11a touch, and then it would go to Larry, and you'd say, oh, okay, this is how sports is
03:16supposed to be.
03:18Playing the Olympics was the ultimate.
03:19And playing with this group of guys that I played with was the best.
03:24Magic wins!
03:27And we put on a show, and we let the world know that we were the best, and they appreciated
03:34that we beat them by 50 and 60 points a game.
03:38It's not so much whether they'll win, but by how much.
03:47It was unbelievable, the attention that was paid to that team.
03:52I didn't know how big the dream team phenomena was until we got there.
03:56At the start of the game, they would come down, they'd pull you out of your line, take

04:03He was on the free throw line, crying, because he couldn't believe that Michael Jordan had

06:25there was a cliff hagan and a slater martin and an easy ed as in mccullough but mostly
06:32the team was bob peddick they don't belong on the list either frankly there was bob peddick
06:38the prototypical power forward he scored 50 in the title clincher for the 1958 hawks
06:44who beat a celtics team hobbled by injury to their intimidating center the 58 st louis hawks
06:50were an excellent basketball team and they deserve to have bill russell be injured when russell got
06:56hurt it was like you know the master is away from guarding everything so now we can attack
07:01they had two great players and bob peddick link the pagan and they played like champs
07:08peddick was the real deal six nine good build fluid he was just smooth and had a great baseline shot
07:16fabulous power forward who even today would still be an all-star
07:31you had a really excellent team that was perennially uh blocked at the gate by the
07:36celtics or lakers they finally got their due 17 17 17 legend has it that upon arrival in new york

07:52all the driving steering the 94 rockets to their first of two straight titles even as television cut
07:57away for a different drive while it was different without michael jordan we got to see truly one of the

08:19hakeem olajuwon is still one of the most graceful sinners to ever play his combination of the power
08:26and the finesse the quickness the confidence it was basically the clash of these two great centers

10:13of the really good teams the spirit that lived in the portland trailblazers symbolized that entire

10:37well before their move to los angeles the lakers were powers the 1953 team
10:43winning the second of three consecutive titles they were led by the gentle giant george mikan
10:48the bespectacled center who was considered treetop tall in those days with a bank shot you could take
10:54to the bank george mikan was the first big man i had ever seen play basketball he was just bigger

11:07he was our leader big broad shoulders i didn't practice i used to watch him i just see those shoulders

11:25wherever we played the place was sold out and that was because of george who was uh magic johnson

11:47oscar robertson was near career's end while kareem abdul jabbar then going by luau cinder had only just
11:55begun when they teamed to lift milwaukee to its only nba title the 1971 bucks won 12 and two in

12:09with 66 and 16 regular season 12 and two in the postseason had the highest point differential of all

13:30and intimidation led to a second straight title by asaiah thomas he of the choir boy face that masked a
13:36raging passion to win that team was just stacked top to bottom with assassins we were very tough
13:43nosed defensive guys bill lambeer i think the 89 pistons were better throwing bows and hitting threes and
13:50every day at practice chuck daily just said hey here's the ball play for your minutes rick mohorn throwing
13:57bodies dennis ramen rebounding and guys would literally we'd fight some people have referred
14:04to it as thug ball you know beating you up everyone talks about their identity as the bad boys but
14:10the baddest boys is probably their backcourt as a thomas to me is the greatest six foot player or
14:17under to ever play you played those fistons team you know you're gonna get mugged and he was like
14:24the leader of the pack he had this angelic image about him a smile on his face but at the
14:30same time
14:30that smile could also very much be a stab in the back that's the kind of competitor he was
14:35detroit is the city of champions again he came every night the guy never disappointed you he was the one
14:43in my book that made that team go this team was tough they didn't take any crap from anybody
14:56in one of the most famous entrances in sports willis reed limped like ahab onto the court and
15:02scored new york's first two baskets in game seven of the 1970 finals his inspired knicks teammates all
15:08stars in their own right ripped la for the crown that nba championship game was blacked out in new
15:15york but on long island if you shimmied your channel you could get channel eight out of
15:19connecticut and we got the tv set right on eight had a snowy picture and watched chris shenkel and
15:24jack twyman in that opening wondering where's willis and here he comes now those guys gave up for each
15:30other they loved each other they didn't care about individual achievements it was all about the team
15:39we hear so much about clive fraser he was a great individual player but he was more than that for
15:45all his flamboyance and and style and charisma off the court he was a team player they played a
15:52beautiful game they shared the basketball they just carved you up and they complemented each other so
15:58well on any given night you could have a different high scorer walt fraser one night dick barnett the
16:02next bill proudly the next wall street the next dave the bush of the next i don't think there's any
16:07question don't want to argue that that was the hideous team that ever wanted an nba title this
16:12was the team that won 18 straight games won in miraculous fashion showed great courage i mean
16:18this was the movie script this season
16:23this was the second of three straight titles for michael and the jordanaires
16:27in a run that reached six championships in eight years michael jordan was revealed as the hoops hope
16:33diamond flawless pit bull defenders the 92 bulls won 67 games one of the greatest things about michael
16:41jordan i think is that he was never satisfied when they won that first title he was thinking about the
16:46second one that just set him off that was almost like a springboard once he won the first one
16:51it just seemed to elevate him to want to win more it was tougher because everybody knew what was coming
16:58when they faced the bulls and they had to really pull it out but they still won the games they
17:02had
17:03to win mainly because they had jordan he's the only player that i've ever seen that has everything that
17:09you need to be a great great player the best ever michael could do whatever he wanted scotty pippen was
17:15a stopper but horace was one who had to cover a lot of ground he made them the defensive team
17:20they were
17:20and believe it or not that's where they won it's uh pretty underrated today was with their defense
17:38that team really set the tone for the remaining championships because after that they just had
17:46a swagger and an arrogance that just overwhelmed their opponents
17:55basketball in boston it's the nba finals with bill russell number six brilliantly spearheading the
18:01celtics before a capacity crown of 14 000. that distinctive parquet floor victory cigar smoke
18:07breathing smug red hourback bill russell dominating bob koozie running the break it was all so familiar
18:15this 1961 edition of the celtic empire won its third straight title en route to 11 championships in 13
18:21seasons the beginning of the dynasty was koozie and then uh russell came so now you got the nucleus of
18:29pretty good ball club the celtics during their dynasty years had distinct teams and the 60-61 team
18:37was the best of the early batch when you look at the roster we had eight guys on that team
18:42ended up in the
18:42hall of fame and it should have been nine
18:54i have no idea how good he is he's ben wallace if ben wallace played about eight inches taller
19:00i don't mean in height i mean in altitude if you go back and you watch the celtics play they
19:04overplayed the
19:05basketball the whole game if a guy got by him drive to the basket russell will almost always block the
19:11shot and catch the ball himself and throw the ball to someone to start a fast break they just ran

19:17ran ran ran it changed the whole game bill russell changed the whole game of basketball how about the
19:22guys running the break down the court who's he sam jones casey jones shaman it's doing things that
19:29other teams have to learn to do they were ahead of their time with their break their fast break and
19:34you take a look at that team they had a lot of athletic players that could have played in the
19:3880s nine nine nine in the playoffs the 2001 lakers with a windshield everyone they played the bug they
19:50went 15 and one to claim the second of three straight titles shaq and kobe bickered but co-existed
19:56and zen master phil jackson made them believers in sharing the ball it was phil jackson's second year
20:01there so they had figured out the triangle they had figured out each other they fought a little
20:05bit during the year but they figured out that it didn't matter for the first time in all these
20:09guys lives winning was the only thing that mattered everybody was reaching for the same goals we all
20:14wanted to win and whatever it was going to take to get it done then they started to win and
20:20win and win
20:20and it was unbelievable there was nobody even close to in those playoffs well they beat us um you know

20:27thought they were pretty special um they had a phenomenal coach we could be down no sweats never
20:33worries never changes just comes in and say okay we're going to win this game as a matter of fact
20:37i already made hotel reservations for the next series this is what we got to do it's simple you little

20:45imagine your second best player averaging 28 and a half points
20:53seriously your second best player averages 28 and a half points and makes all defense
21:04keel kobe combination before it totally disintegrated was fantastic to watch
21:11you had the inside game of shaq who still had the spring in his legs and the hunger and the
21:17fire to
21:17win the title you had kobe i don't think there's ever been a greater second guy than kobe bryant
21:25you can't be a team with just a great coach and a couple of stars and they had fisher and
21:30robert ory rick fox i think the 2000-2001 lakers are arguably the best nba team of all time
21:42if ever a player owned one night it was irvin johnson who demonstrated exactly what magic
21:47is for the night lakers la was without kareem abdul jabbar for game six of the finals but the rookie
21:53took over for the veteran and was was mesmerizing the lakers of 79 80 are one of the great coming

22:01parties for magic johnson he was showtime personified
22:08the performance by magic johnson in the finals game six was the best individual performance i think
22:15there's ever been he's a rookie he actually should be a junior in college kareem goes down with an
22:23ankle injury nba finals pressurized situation he moves from point guard to center we did not think
22:33the lakers had a chance to win the game
22:38and scores 42 points 15 rebounds seven assists plays all five positions it was just amazing
22:47magic was in complete control he was the best player on the floor by far that night
22:54for a rookie to do that to play out of position
22:57and win the nba championship was just phenomenal that's never been done prior to that will never
23:04be done i think again when it comes to who's number one everyone has an opinion
23:10moses could lead them out of the wilderness in 1983 they were right moses malone's commanding presence in
23:17the middle was all they had been missing he was a perfect compliment to dr j and a syncopated playoff
23:23prophet too one thing we were always missing was a real inside presence the man the man was moses malone
23:34they had one of the best rebounders in the history of the game and moses malone
23:39just an unstoppable energy force he brought them to the promised land
23:46i never forget i asked larry bird one time if you could pick five guys and you get first pick

23:53you're picking he said moses he didn't even flinch moses
23:57i said why moses i don't want to have to play against him so he better be on my team
24:04i could not win the title without doc just teaming dr j with moses was just an unstoppable tandem
24:11what can i tell you it was sweeter than honey the 76ers were always dr j team before never
24:18moses malone team i have a guy like moses around he was the dominant center i never played with a
24:24dominant center that was a team that had people who had been frustrated at different parts of their
24:46career blocked and reaching championships but that team wasn't going to be stopped that team
24:52was arguably the best ever in my opinion after so many years of being so close the city of philadelphia
24:58had a tremendous outpouring of love for their 76ers that's right after 16 years finally a parade for
25:05their nba world champions
25:11six six six the tip-off that boston was going to win came as soon as bill russell started his
25:17pre-tip-off
25:18retching despite struggling with pre-game jitters the relentless rebounder and spidery
25:23shot blocker led the 64 celtics to their sixth consecutive title in a run of eight the 63-64 celtics
25:30were
25:30remarkable in that it was a changing of the guard that was um a year after koozie retired now it
25:37was
25:37bill russell's team plain and simple and russell was one of the great winners of all time the guy was
25:43well he is the greatest
25:49they've had the team when you build that mystique everybody understands that the team is much better
25:56than the person that's one of the things that i've done so well you could always find somebody
26:19has had both the guys who've had to be second fiddle john havilchek and sam jones have now stepped up
26:25to be
26:25backcourt stars this is just the epitome of the eight-man deep interlocking pieces i think
26:33anyone at all celtic teams could beat anybody in the last 25 years and do it handily in a series
26:43i wouldn't say anyone
26:53we were l.a we were showtime showtime showtime showtime showtime showtime
26:57five five they pull alongside an exhausted opponent smile and ask tired yet and then the 84 lakers would
27:04rock it away magic johnson at the throttle pat riley urging more speed nowhere was their style more
27:10apparent than against boston there was no friendships it was a real rivalry who's going to have home
27:16court advantage in the nba finals because we knew it was going to come down to us and the lakers
27:20we were everything that they were not probably we were everything that they wanted to be but we're
27:25not and weren't perceived to be here was this laker team coming from the west coast showtime
27:31finally overcoming the celtics in the boston garden we were too committed we were too good we
27:36were too prepared it was our day pat was the michael jordan of the coaches he's the ultimate coach
27:43one sports writer put it best i think they said that when the celtics met the lakers of the
27:48thoroughbred against the glidesdales
27:52magic now totally in charge uh no question who the leader was he'd take off on the board he'd be
27:59speed dribbling you'd have worthy and scott cooper filling the lane showtime he was the best
28:03live is the fun it's just the greatest to watch because he was always excited you never knew what
28:07he would do you just always knew he was going to do something exciting magic was an absolutely unique
28:13basketball player and he didn't have to do anything else but find a way to beat you
28:20we see just one no look before we move on magic could dominate not just play but he could dominate
28:31games irving was one of the most competitive people i've ever been around and not just on the
28:35basketball court i mean in everything uh he didn't like losing this team they knew they could outscore
28:41anybody at any time and they just dared you to try to run with them and as we saw nobody
28:47could
28:48the Celtics birds all those years that you've had to put up with is over that dynasty is broken the
28:55lakers are the world champions this year if being number one is your life's dream occupation
29:02then hopefully you've got a couple extra doses of dedication
29:09for seven straight years will chamberlain let the nba in scoring but had no title to show for it
29:15in 67 the philly center concentrated his skills in other areas and got his ring he averaged 24 points
29:22and 24 rebounds and was third in the league in assists he probably could have scored his 50 again
29:28if he wanted to but that was a situation where he learned to trust his teammates
29:34when you need me to score i'm here but i'm going to control the boards i'm going to control the
29:39defense
29:39i'm going to do whatever you guys need me to do it was great to see wilt do that nobody
29:43thought
29:44that wilt you know could bury his ego a little bit he led the league all those years in scoring
29:49you know what more is there to do offensively in basketball and i think he wanted that championship badly
30:001967 philadelphia 76ers if you could put them in a time machine and move them to the present
30:05they would probably win the nba title right now this is just a ridiculously talented team
30:11wilt chamberlain could play anybody now he's shacking in his prime slightly different style but just as
30:18good wilt was just so awesome i mean yep enough if wilt had been mean nobody could have done anything
30:26with
30:26with wilt but he was just a mild mannered kind of guy which we all appreciated because you know a
30:33lot
30:33of guys could have gotten hurt chamberlain and jackson and greer that whole big group of guys was one of
30:40the most talented teams that i've ever seen in the nba
30:48every once in a while everything just clicks and you just get the right players on the right team
30:54at the right time and that was that 76ers team
31:00three three three three 85 86 celtics had it only occurred to them to hey you know we can win
31:0770 we
31:08can break the record they would have done it well the 86 celtics did win 67 including 40 of 41
31:15at home
31:15and their 16th championship in just 40 years larry bird was at the snarling zenith of his game
31:22kevin mikhail was a post-up power and scowling robert parish patrolled the paint they were so good
31:28and had so much fun on and off the court and they they dribbled away games they gave away games
31:34unfortunately they would have been the first team to win the 70 not those bulls teams and they would
31:38have wiped the floor with that bulls team by any of the michael teams forget about it
31:42larry bird kevin mikhail robert parish three top 50 players that may have been the best passing
31:49team ever it's one of the best teams i ever played on larry bird was obviously the most
31:59important piece of the whole franchise maybe the franchise's history larry bird was a very
32:04competitive whatever it took to win rebound block out throwing the elbow knock you down hard
32:10foul you know that's who he was he was a basketball genius he'd be a step ahead a thought ahead
32:17uh play the game like a chess game you know he's going to take your heart and he was going
32:22to take
32:22it out he's going to throw it on the floor step on it he's going to love it
32:30they just really gelled together as a team they knew how to pass they knew how to give the ball
32:35to the other
32:35guy who's going to guard mikhail that was always the number one question they were high flying they
32:42were fun just going to practice to watch that team was a thrill because the practices were great
32:47mention of the word celtics would would raise the hair on the back of our neck 85 86 celtics well
32:54i will never say anything good about the celtics i don't like them so
33:04over three months and two calendar years the lakers won 33 straight bettering the old record by 11
33:10before losing in january of 1972. their backcourt of old pros jerry west and gail goodrich good for 50
33:17a game and wilt well he pretty much took care of everything else in the playoffs every game is important
33:23but when you're on a 33 game winning streak that means you're coming into somebody else's house
33:28no matter how good they are you're telling them it ain't gonna happen we're not losing 33 straight
33:34games is just phenomenal will came out to the coast and what a triumvirate that is just about as great
33:40a three-man team as you'll ever see the secret to the team was will sharman talked him into being

33:57rebounder and a defensive player and that was the backbone of the team you had chamberlain who was
34:03grabbing the rebounds playing defense blocking shots do whatever it took to win that was an
34:09awesome team because obviously you had will chamberlain in the middle but a great backcourt
34:14with jerry west and gail goodrich jerry west and uh gail goodrich they've really played as a team
34:20jerry west had that killer instinct in him i mean this guy come to beat you every night
34:31for the three of them to mesh to put all you know egos and mentality aside for them to play
34:36together
34:37to move the ball around and to play off all their strength and they were just one of the great
34:42teams
34:42you'll ever see in any sport this team is very special i don't know how you could possibly possibly
34:47think a team could win 33 games in a row in this year it'll never happen again in sports the
34:54most
34:54difficult task that you can ask someone to do is to the running of the bulls rampaged on the 96
35:01squad
35:01launching the second three-peat of the decade for chicago michael jordan was well michael jordan
35:07scotty pippen rode shotgun dennis rodman owned the boards and phil jackson's reputation swelled
35:15really from the first game the media in chicago was speculating could this team win 70 games
35:23that was an incredible team when you consider that it was michael jordan and scotty pippen and
35:28who else you don't need the five greatest players of all time you need a couple of the greatest
35:37you need people to do their roles you need a madman like dennis rodman i would make money being bad
35:44you know doing the thing that they couldn't do they accomplished so much in that season that
35:49you look at their role players you know michael had a bad night they still won and there was a
35:54time
35:54where if michael had a bad night you're sure to win that game but i think that's just a testament
35:59of his
36:00will on his teammates to win
36:08that was a very dedicated team it just got to the point to where we started seeing
36:16all these records that we have an opportunity to break the focus of the bulls in particular jordan
36:22pippen well it was remarkable and and we were starting to suggest early in the year they could
36:28win more than 70 games
36:34the fact that they carried that through and only lost 10 games stunning it'll never be matched it's
