00:00Two men, one mission, kill the most dangerous Nazi alive.
00:04In 1942, British-trained paratroopers Joseph Gabczyk and Jan Kubitsch dropped into Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia
00:12with orders to assassinate Reinhard Heydrich.
00:15He was the architect of the Holocaust's bureaucratic machinery,
00:18the man who organized the systematic murder of millions.
00:21He was known as the Butcher of Prague.
00:23On May 27th, they ambushed his open-top car on a sharp bend in the road.
00:27A grenade, a gunshot.
00:30Heydrich was dead within a week.
00:32But the reprisal was unlike anything Europe had seen.
00:35The Nazis razed the entire village of Lyddis to the ground.
00:38Every man shot, women sent to concentration camps, children gassed, the buildings demolished,
00:45the earth leveled, the village was erased from the map.
00:48Then the SS found the assassins.
00:50Two men, a church crypt, 800 soldiers surrounding them.
00:54They held for six hours before the ammunition ran out.
00:57Historians still argue about whether the mission was worth it.
01:00The assassins never seemed to ask that question.
