00:00Hi Rachel and Suleyman, I'm here at University of Dar es Salaam, one of the Tanzania's largest and most prestigious
00:06university,
00:07to ask students a simple but important question, which language would they prefer as the language of instruction in higher
00:14education,
00:15Swahili or English and why?
00:17Swahili for me because I'm Tanzanian and one of the identity of my country and my culture is Swahili language
00:24and wherever where we are, we like to use Swahili language because we can understand things simply.
00:29English is paramount because they are preparing us to live in an international world, we need English,
00:35but I would say at earlier stages of instruction, like as young as nursery and then especially primary and secondary,
00:42those formative years, I think, you know, the best strategy for where we are as a country economically
00:47would be to try the method that Kenya is doing right now, which is that they instruct children to be
00:56fluent in both English and Swahili.
00:58Kiswahili language is our culture and the symbol of all units, so since childhood we used to speak Kiswahili
01:05and we are so fluent in Kiswahili, so just imagine a child is just learning Kiswahili as the primary language,
01:13then at secondary school we just want to convert from Kiswahili language to English language that can be some confusions
01:22to start to learn a new language. Sometimes students may not be able to express their ideas and innovation because
01:29of language.
01:30Kiswahili language is our culture and we are so important to understand the language and the language of the language.
01:32Satsang with language is our culture and language is our culture and language.
01:33You
