At Fortune Brainstorm Tech, Serhant founder and CEO Ryan Serhant said he originally got into real estate because he ran out of money and needed to pay rent. Early in his career, a Craigslist rental deal earned him a $2,000 commission—enough to cover an entire month of expenses.

“Still to this day, that was the definition of big for me,” he said.

00:00I only got into the business because I totally ran out of money and I was living month to
00:04month to month and I had to pay my rent so I had to make $2,000 a month.
00:07That was my goal.
00:08If I didn't do that, I had to leave New York City and it would have been a complete catastrophe.
00:12So my first big check for me was a rental deal.
00:15It was $4,000 a month.
00:17I got the client over Craigslist, rented them an apartment.
00:20The commission was $4,000 so it was one month's rent and as a new agent at that time your
00:25split, your commission split was 50-50 with the company and so my commission on that one
00:31deal on that one day was $2,000 and I paid my entire monthly expenses, my rent plus food,
00:38MetroCard and everything with one transaction.
00:41Still to this day, everything that I do now, that was the definition of big for me.
