04:44and just, like, carry that with you, because people tend not to carry spare starter relays,
04:48you know, they want to take your car.
04:50I have absolutely no idea what's going on.

04:56We also got, uh, offline maps here, so you can, uh, see the topography and the satellite views.
05:05That's great for, like, scoping out, um, you know, uh, dispersed camping spots, because you can
05:10usually see, especially in the desert, oh, yeah, there's a spot, you know, on the- on the satellite imagery.
05:15And you have this rigged up to just anywhere you are?
05:19Um, yeah, yeah, I- I downloaded the- the satellite maps for the- the whole western U.S.,
05:24so-
05:24which is a lot of data, so it's just, yeah, available whenever I need it.

05:37Craig and I actually met a year ago in the middle of a forest, and I was
05:41there with my cousin Sarah, and we were camping and getting to know the area, and next thing I know,
05:47Craig comes walking through the forest, didn't know who he was at this point, and he's got these two
05:51beautiful rocks, one green, one blue. He gave me those rocks, and I was just like,
05:56oh my god, these are the most beautiful things I've ever seen. Who are you? And he had been watching
06:00the channel, and ever since we've become friends, but that same night he gave us a tour of the vehicle,
06:05and I could not stop thinking about this 4Runner. I'm telling you, it is like- I've never seen anything
06:12like it. So, here we are a year later, I hit him up and I was like, please can I
06:17share you and your
06:18vehicle with the world, and he was down because he's also one of the most unique,
06:23fascinating minds I've ever met, so this is really going to be a treat. Craig is going to show us
06:28how
06:29he gets ready for the day from start to finish here. Yeah, so first thing is fill up the replenished
06:36of water from overnight, right, because it gets dry in these environments, and you're thirsty,
06:42at least I get thirsty at night, so we're going to start by refilling this. We got a 20-liter
06:47jerry can here. This one's cool, it costs more, but the cool thing about it, it's got a built-in
06:52filter, so you can literally like scoop up, you know, river water. So this turns water into potable
06:58water no matter what? Yep, yep, yeah, it's the same thing like, you know- Except salt water, probably,
07:02right? Like the army uses. Yeah, well, no, no, no, okay, yeah, no, not salt water. You can fill it
07:07up
07:08through here, and then this is also the pump, so the hand pump, so come down here and open up
07:16the veil,
07:21and the pump is what gets it to filter through. The pump, yeah, the pump pressurizes it enough
07:27to, yeah, get through the filter, which is here at the bottom. You're going to have to send me all
07:30the links to all your cool stuff, because now I want one of these. Yeah, yeah. So cool. Yeah,
07:35these are great. I see you have the window covers. Will you take these off before driving,
07:38or do you just keep them permanent? It's a good safety thing, right, you know, being able to see out
07:42of your windows, right? So you got your bug net here, and these are nice. They pull down,
07:49so then you can get the air through. And then we got some fans here for the ventilation. That's
07:53exhaust, and then it pulls in the inputs on the other side, so. You might notice these fans look
07:59different than your average fans, and it's because they are computer fans. Yeah, I said, hey, wait,
08:06um, like, what fan would fit in this, like, rectangular slot? Well, there aren't really many,
08:10and the ones that do exist, they don't have a good ratio of the amount of air they push out
08:16for the amount of sound that they make. And the computer fans are actually optimized to be very
08:22quiet because, you know, you're having to work in these environments 24-7 or whatever. They cost a
08:26little more, but it's great. And I actually have, there's a dial I can adjust how fast it moves air
08:32from my bed and also from the front, so. And so you have one on each side. Can they
08:37be, like, reverse? Oh, because you can move them. Yeah, um, yeah, so this side, this side doesn't move,
08:42uh, and then the other side, they rotate. I can move them around. But basically, yes, it is set up
08:47in
08:47a way that, uh, the air comes in on that side, and then this is the exhaust side. Uh, and
08:52that's
08:52actually, so that's super important because then, uh, you know, um, moisture is the enemy in this kind
08:59of lifestyle, right? Because then moisture leads to mold, and then mold leads to all sorts of health
09:04problems that you don't want, and mold remediation, which, uh, you know, Nikki might know a thing or
09:10two about. Oh, don't even. Not in the van. Thankfully not in the van. Yeah. That's what black
09:14mold looks like. Oh my god, don't touch it. You guys, we're gonna be getting into so much stuff here,
09:23but it's getting hot. It's getting so hot. Yes, it is. Should we figure out where we're going? Yeah,

09:34is going to be weather. What do you do to prioritize to get to? Right, so easiest way to
09:40change the temperature is to change your elevation. Uh, so my experience, you know, it's usually about
09:46300, uh, uh, feet for one, uh, every one degree of temperature difference. So in other words, yeah,
09:52if we go up 300 feet, it'll be that, you know, one degree cooler. Uh, freedom units, of course, and
09:59so we got to climb a lot. Yeah, yeah. So with that, we have concluded. We are going to be

12:20because it's a waterfront. Leaving the pavement.
12:26I feel like this is the stressful part of van life is finding a place to sleep,
12:31especially when you want to be near water. Oh my gosh. This place is swimming with people.

12:41It's warm. There's no shade here, but there is a river. And there is firing. And it's it.

13:52parked up on a beach or places that can flash flood is in my park somewhere where the water level

13:58going to go up, get this. Yeah. So, uh, uh, down by one of the, um, the tire mounts and
14:08then,
14:08uh, the wheel mounts together. And then, yeah, so now it'll just wake me up in the middle of the
14:12night
14:12when, uh, it's flooding and I need to get out of there. What's the sound?
14:22Oh my gosh. That will wake you up. Yeah. Well, right. Which is exactly what you want.
14:27When the water flood water is coming, you want to get out of there pronto. You don't want to be,
14:32you know, pressing the snooze.

16:05would
16:05be really cool to tell everybody how you ended up in a vehicle before we look more into it and
16:10get into
16:10your nighttime routine. Yeah. You know, so like a lot of people, like during the pandemic, a lot of
16:15stuff was happening. I kind of got burnt out and decided, you know what, it's time for a change.
16:21It's something different. And at first I was going to get a new job, but then I ended up only
16:25doing the
16:25first part. I clicked the one and I didn't get a new one. And then I was like, I could
16:30take the time to
16:32see the world. Really quick for reference, Craig was very, very well off in his job. He was a cloud
16:41architect, former electrical engineer, right? He was very high up the corporate ladder. It was like
16:47the American dream almost. I tried to follow the blueprint of work your way up, you know, career
16:53and it's some big house and all this stuff. And I kind of eventually realized, um, through the whole
17:00thing, I didn't need all that to be happy. I was like, wait, why am I working myself a desk?
17:05And then
17:05I'm like, could I really be happy living out of an SUV? Uh, and it turns out the answer is
17:14yes.
17:14It was a gradual thing. Like, I'm not saying like, hey, you could just go and like do it overnight.
17:19I mean, like I did. Some people do, it's okay. But I'm saying there's, it's also totally okay
17:27to do it gradually. Do a weekend. Yeah. Do a month. Come back. Do three months. Like,
17:34I did not know at the beginning that this was going to work. It was just something I thought,
17:38well, that was interesting. I saw Nikki's channel. Was that the first channel you saw? Yeah. I mean,
17:44you're one of the OG, you know, like van lifers out there. That's why I'm wearing a cool hat today.
17:49You know, I think it's like, oh, hey, you should check out this. That's really cool.
17:57Um, yeah. And then, um, I was like, okay, this is something worth exploring. Speaking of all of this
18:02cool stuff, let's get over there. Let's get over there. First thing is, um, leveling. Of your rig,
18:13of course, it's going to depend on your, well, the sleeping orientation. Basically, right. My head
18:17is in the back. So that means I don't want any, uh, roll, too much roll to the left or
18:23the right.
18:23Okay. So I do have leveling blocks, uh, in the back and those are really helpful when the terrain is
18:29uneven. But I, what I found is that a good level indicator, uh, will pretty much solve the problem
18:38for you without that, if you're willing to spend a few minutes, like, uh, going around. So it's a
18:45two dimensional little, uh, leveler and, um, it will change your life. Yeah. It just makes it easy.
18:51Because again, the things that you have to do every day, those are the things you want to focus
18:54on, like getting those down so that you're not spending a lot of time with that. Honestly,
19:00something like this leveling is so smart and I'm so surprised I don't have it yet because it's like
19:05when you show up to a camp spot, you want everything to be as easy as possible. It's not
19:08like your house, your bed set up and level every single day you're doing this. So it's absolutely
19:13genius. Something just as small as this bad boy headlamp, all toothbrush, all the things you could ever
19:19need in the front seat. Genius. Uh, and yeah, this is good. This is a good safety thing. So if
19:24you ever
19:25find yourself, I don't know, in a lake, uh, because the GPS took you the wrong way, I guess. Wait,
19:30in the lake submerged? Yeah. Look on YouTube, these people are always like, and you're like, how did
19:35they get there? And they're floating away and then they won't open. But they might have this. Um, so it's
19:40a spring, and don't put your finger here. Oh my god, I'm scared. It's a spring-loaded pin. You can
19:44get the
19:44hammers. But the problem is when you're underwater, it's a lot harder to swing and break the glass,
19:49the tempered glass. Uh, with, with this, it's a spring load. So you just press it against the glass
19:53and it will, and the thing will shatter. Oh, I'm going to need a link to that. That's sick. It's,
19:58um,
19:59and I have it, and the reason I have it on a little piece of string here is because I'm
20:03thinking, uh,
20:04my thought was like, well, hey, if you roll over, then this is going to go flying. You won't know
20:07where it
20:07is, right? This is a good thing to have in your rig. You've thought of everything. Uh, so then I
20:13also
20:13have, uh, a few accessories here. So the light bar, uh, really these two for the light bar and the
20:21ditch
20:21lights. Great for driving at night. Yeah, right. Cause, uh, if you, if you are driving at night and,
20:26you know, through these back roads, that makes a big difference. It turns out it's actually very hard
20:31to find the first camping when you can't see anything or, or, or, or see like, oh, there's
20:37like a huge tree there that looks like it's going to fall over or whatever. So can confirm light bar
20:41as the remedy to all that. Yeah. And she, she's got the good light bar. I have like, I got
20:46a really
20:47good one. And then here, uh, is the fuel transfer switch. Well, it shows me the level of the auxiliary
20:53tank. And then when I activate this, it activates the pump that transfers from the auxiliary tank to the
20:58main tank. Um, and then when you, when it's time to fill up, uh, basically there's a split in the
21:04fuller neck so that when you fill up at the gas station, you're filling up both tanks at the same
21:09time. So, um, it's a, it's a pretty good setup and, uh, it can save you, it can save you
21:15potentially
21:15a lot of money. Like we were talking about earlier, where if you're filling up in a place where gas
21:19is
21:19cheap, you did not. That is genius. Do you know how many spoons and forks I've lost? I would have
21:26a fork
21:26up there though. Cause I, I always have spoons, but I never have forks. Yeah. That's sick. Yeah. So
21:32yeah. Well, like I said, you know, you want to think about it in terms of the things that you
21:36use the most and are doing the most should be the most accessible, right? You don't have to
21:41definitely be fancy. Like this is literally two magnets glued on infotainment system.
21:46Okay. Craig, simple stuff. We got our roof here. How much solar do you, uh, what's the solar
21:52water? Uh, uh, just over 400 Watts on the, on the top. Uh, this is, it's a residential panel. Um,
22:00and it turns out that really fit well, uh, with the dimensions I was working with. Oh,
22:05I love this. You also have the max tracks, uh, max tracks, very necessary, especially when
22:11off-roading and we got the mini. Do you, you have this mounted to the roof permanently?
22:15So the Starlink mini is mounted to the roof, but it's, uh, removable. So if I want to use it
22:20backpacking, I can do that, uh, in the outback. It's pretty nice. And I also have the GPS antenna
22:25here that tells me where the car is at all times. And that's also a handy feature. I also have
22:30a
22:30retractable cell booster and, um, and then, uh, security hammers too. So, you know, you can get
22:37all the usual motion work better and they work pretty well. Do you have any in the car as well?
22:44Uh, classified. Classified. Can't tell you. Shh. But he has a security camera
22:50going each direction that is motion sensor activated. That's really cool. Yeah. Well,
22:54they double the dash cam. So, um, you know, it's good to have that kind of, you know,
22:59insurance fraud is on the rise and, you know, that happens. So with this setup, uh, I can stream any
23:06of
23:06the cameras up top, uh, down here. Uh, and I like to stream the rear camera because a lot of
23:12the times
23:12I've got a lot of junk back there. You can't see through the rear window. Uh, so this is a
23:16good
23:16safety feature to have so you can see who's behind you. Nice. So you have just a whole bunch of
23:21things
23:21that go straight to this screen, even like the maps and things like that. Yeah. I, this is,
23:26I guess you could say the central console that I've integrated everything. So I have, well, this is kind
23:32of coded, but yeah, I can, so I can turn on the inverter. If I press this button, uh, I
23:37can turn on the DC
23:38to DC charger. I can turn on the cell booster. I can turn on the star link. Uh, I can
23:44even like,
23:45if I see a campsite, I like where I'm at, cause I got the GPS on top and knows where
23:49I am. I can say,
23:49Oh, this is a pretty sweet campsite. Uh, it's got, you know, a nice river here and it's good.
23:57It's good cell service. So, okay. Now that's added to my database. So if I go back to my maps,
24:01it's going to show all my, uh, campsites. And this is your own personal database, not like an app
24:06or anything like that. This is just for your pins. Yeah. Yeah. And I, I do have ones that I
24:11added from public databases into that database, but I also have the ones that I've just discovered
24:15myself. And then, uh, it, it just makes it a lot easier when you're driving by yourself. And then
24:20you're just like, that's a good spot. That's a good spot. That's a good spot. And then you're like,
24:25okay, add, add, add, add. I'm so jealous. And it'll take a picture, uh, with the camera too.
24:33Uh, so the cameras, so it will, so then you can go back later, like, wait, what was that? And
24:37then
24:38you got the photos of the campsites as well. That is the coolest thing ever. Yeah. Uh, I think so.
24:45Good product, dude. Okay. And then back here is all the stuff you don't want to put in your car,
24:50like the leveling blocks and your trash. Love that. I put these ultrasonic, uh, sensors in the back.
24:56Again, it's just like, you know, they'll beep at you if you're going to back into something. So,
25:00and that's a cheap, you know, cheap security thing, right? Oh, cool.
25:03And you installed those yourselves? Yeah. Wow. You can get those aftermarket, you know,
25:09they're pretty, they're not too hard to put in. And then. I like that you have this, uh, fold out.
25:15Oh yeah. Yeah. Oh, what is it? Swing? Yeah. Swing. Actually, I do need to cook a
25:19dumb net because at some point. So, yeah. So basically it goes down like that and it's simple,
25:25it's cheap and it works. I love this. You really can't rig anything together. There's another
25:33level or here if I want to check the rear level, which it looks like it did pretty good. Yeah.

25:38We're going to do a little test right now. So this guy right here soundproofed his entire vehicle,
25:44took it apart, put up all the, what, sound deadeners and everything. And that was it?
25:49Yeah, it's a lot of work, but it's the most worthwhile thing you can do if you're
25:52like speaking like me. You will be able to hear it a little bit, uh, but yeah, it'll be very
25:56much.

26:15I'm very loud if anyone was wondering. Uh, there's no miracle, uh, solutions yet. Uh,
26:21but, uh, but you know, again, it just lowers the sound level.
26:25What is this bad boy? Yeah, it is. It is the element. Yeah. Yeah. Take it out. You
26:34can see how, how heavy it or light it is. Yeah. Yeah. Just pull it. Yeah. There you go. Um,
26:41and yeah, so take, and if you take the cap off, yeah, well, so it's a lot lighter weight,
26:49obviously a lot less space, which, uh, is a big win, obviously in a limited build like this,
26:56it's like a striker here that you go like that. So you light it and then it will exude a
27:03potassium gas, which, uh, interacts with the fire and causes it just to die out.
27:09And, uh, unlike some other fire extinguishers, it works both with electrical fires and grease fires,
27:15which is really handy, um, in confined spaces, uh, which is what they're meant for. Don't,
27:20you know, don't use this like to fight a wildfire. That's not going to work.
27:23You guys saw it earlier, but it will be evening when Craig is working, and he just
27:28flips his gun, grabs his keyboard, and he works on his front seat, like that.
27:34That's the fast setup, uh, but that's not the one I use most of the time, and I'll show you
27:38why. That
27:38was like the original. Yeah. Yeah. So this, the new setup involves just taking the screen here,
27:43laying it over the steering wheel like so, plugging it in, and popping the keyboard in my lap,
27:51and this is actually a much ergonomically better setup. Um, and the only other problem that leaves
27:57is what to do with the mouse, because you need the mouse to be here. And to solve that,
28:05I crafted this and unceremoniously glued it here, and said, hey, you know what, this fits over the
28:11shifter knob pretty well. I only try to use my computer when I'm in park, not when I'm in drive.
28:16So then, uh, and then this is actually a really cool, uh, setup that I can do for long periods
28:23of time.

30:10It happened the, you know what, the very first night I ever, uh, camped in there.
30:17And you were naked?
30:19No.
30:20Uh, no, because it was only 8 p.m. and I was about to go to bed.
30:25And I was about to go to bed.
30:26I saw flashing lights outside and there was a tow truck that was about to tow me.
30:30And the man said, oh, you can't stay here.
30:33I was like, oh, oh, I'm sorry.
30:35I didn't know that.
30:35Um, and then he's like, but you could just go right over there in the hotel parking lot.
30:42So he was cool.
30:43I was like, okay, thanks.
30:44But I learned an important lesson that day.
30:47When you see an empty parking lot, that is not the one you want to overnight in.
30:52We're going our separate ways for a minute so we can all take, uh, what we'd like to call hippie
30:57showers.
30:57Well, actually that could be in a, that could be in a river, but we're not going to the river
31:01tonight.
31:01We're doing washcloth showers tonight.
31:03Yeah.
31:03So we're going to meet up with Craig in a minute.
31:06Being a van lifer slash nomad is so funny.
31:09Like in what other world are you going to talk about how you're going to shower tonight, right?
31:15You're hanging out with your friends and you're like, how are you going to shower tonight?
31:18You're going to like wipe your pits, you're going to use a washcloth, baby wipes.
31:22So you're going to, how are you going to use a bathroom?
31:24That is the only time that is a normal, normal conversation.

31:46Craig is going to show us his night routine in here, which I'm really excited about.
31:50Because that's like one of my favorite things about vehicle dwelling is sleeping in them.
31:54It is very minimal.
31:57Step one for bedtime, window shades go up.
32:01Step one and a half, window shades get folded.
32:06Step two and a half, bug net goes over.
32:15These look really durable too.
32:18Basically, I got my fan controls here.
32:21So I can, you know, dial the speed in to what I want.
32:25So right now it's kind of at max, just because I want to get some air in here.
32:29Because you sleep really hot, you were saying, right?
32:32And then, yeah, and then I have another control of the bed.
32:34I'll dial it down a little bit once it cools down a bit here.
32:37So, and then I got the light here.
32:41So, okay, turn off the light.
32:43And, you know, you want all the lights out, right?
32:46Like a blackout environment.
32:50So, if you have a battery monitor like I do here, this one has a nice shortcut.
32:55If you press both of these buttons together, then it turns off the display.
32:59Amazing.
32:59So.
33:00The first van I was in had a light that ruined my life.
33:03Oh.
33:04And it was just the, this thing.
33:06Yeah.
33:06So now it is all dark in here.
33:08So now I basically just take off the shoes.
33:15Let's get settled in the coffin for the night here.
33:19It looks so cozy, Craig.
33:21I can't even tell you how much I love this.
33:23It is actually, it is very cozy.
33:25Well, hello, sir.

33:28He sleeps really hot.
33:30So what do you have for a hack for that?
33:32Because I'm the opposite.
33:33I sleep pretty cold.
33:35So I have a zero degree quilt.
33:36I have hand warmers.
33:38I have slept with boiling water and a Nalgene near my feet.
33:42Like I put hot hands in a, in a bandana and put it over my nose and around my face.
33:48Like slept on top of an electric blanket.
33:51Like I'm always pretty cold.
33:53So you, I'm going to let you be the expert for hot camping.
33:56Um, so I will say I do have a 12 volt, uh, electric blanket for that.
34:03Um, for the cold camping, it only draws 60 watts.
34:06It's not as much as like the residential, but it turns out there's actually this really cool
34:10blanket you can buy.
34:12Well then, uh, this one's like an Arctic blanket.
34:15I don't know if that's like a generic term or not.
34:17Arctic blanket.
34:17It's called.
34:18Yeah.
34:18Can I touch it?
34:19Yeah, but it is.
34:20Oh, that is very, that is cool to the touch.
