Transcript
00:00Hey!
00:01Hey!
00:01How are you?
00:02Pandora!
00:03Pandora!
00:03Pandora!
00:04What you need to do is get control of Pandora.
00:07If dogs go wild...
00:10They are absolutely nuts.
00:13Is the dog around?
00:15I can't control them.
00:17Come on now, big boy.
00:18Nathan thinks he can read.
00:20Surely he can.
00:20He can't.
00:21He's a dog.
00:22Of course he can.
00:22And get up.
00:23Oh, here we go.
00:24No, get down.
00:25To no good.
00:26Oh, it's me now, is it?
00:28I'm honoured.
00:29Or down.
00:30Oh, no.
00:31And dirty.
00:32He loves a big, large crap.
00:36Oh.
00:36Tank likes to rub his boy parts.
00:40What is going on with you, Tank?
00:41When pups...
00:42I wonder what we're going to learn today.
00:44...need to be schooled.
00:46Three, two, one.
00:48That's it.
00:49Fantastic.
00:49Look at that.
00:50Or if your pooch...
00:52He's dropped one.
00:53He got a whiff.
00:54...has a personal problem.
00:55Some dogs have bacterias that are gas-producing.
00:59Just in case.
01:01One man...
01:02Hey, look at that.
01:04...will give it his all.
01:06Jack!
01:07Oi!
01:07Leave it.
01:08...and get answers...
01:09I think I might know what's going on, and it's not what you think.
01:12...to any doggy dilemma.
01:15Yeah, that's next level, innit?
01:21This week...
01:22...we definitely lost business because of them.
01:25...an antique shop on the brink of becoming history.
01:28No!
01:29They say that they're dog-friendly, but I'm not sure that they are.
01:32...as battling brothers scare away customers.
01:35I'm really not sure that I want to go in.
01:38Morning, everybody!
01:39Excitement reaches fever pitch at puppy school.
01:43Calm down.
01:43All right.
01:44...with their toughest lesson yet.
01:46Try a collar now.
01:48Winnie, come!
01:49Winnie, come!
01:50Spoiler alert, recall is possibly one of the hardest things you can train.
01:53Off, Troy! Off!
01:55And a doberman's brush with death...
01:57No! Off!
01:57He's had four operations on his stomach.
02:00Four operations, wow.
02:02...could spell real disaster.
02:04He's going to harm himself.
02:05It's a bad situation.
02:07No!
02:09Oh!
02:11Graham's starting his week in Kingsland, Norfolk.
02:14I've been a dog trainer now for, well, the best part of 20 years,
02:17and running my own business, you know, it does bring an awful lot of freedom,
02:21you know?
02:22I'm my own boss, and I really like that.
02:24It suits me.
02:24He's heading to meet a couple after his own heart.
02:28Louise and Mark opened their antique shop 13 years ago.
02:32Let me go back that way with it.
02:34Business was booming.
02:35That was until Boxer Cross Basset Hound Brothers, Ernie and Walter, came on board.
02:41Please ring bell as dogs are loose!
02:45Exclamation mark, exclamation mark.
02:47Oh, well.
02:48Better follow the instructions.
02:52PHONE RINGS
02:52This does not board well.
02:56PHONE RINGS
02:57Hello!
02:58Are you friendly?
02:59Hiya.
03:00Hiya.
03:01Nice to meet you.
03:02Hiya.
03:02I'm on Lou, yeah.
03:03Yeah, nice to meet you.
03:04I'm just going to get some leads, and then we can get out of the range.
03:06Oh, OK, fair enough.
03:08It's a pretty full-on experience when you first arrive at this business,
03:12because you hear Ernie and Walter before you see them.
03:15And the sound, it don't sound friendly.
03:19Since arriving, two-year-olds Ernie and Walter have caused mayhem.
03:24They are...
03:25A handful.
03:26Ernie!
03:2795% of the time, they're lovely.
03:31No!
03:32No!
03:325% of the time.
03:36Carnage.
03:37And for a shop that is dependent on passing trade...
03:43..sadly the trade is passing.
03:45I think we definitely lost business because of them.
03:48You can see someone's come to the gate,
03:51seen the dogs and walked away again.
03:53Brave customers who do make it inside...
03:56No, Walter.
03:58..aren't left to peruse in peace.
04:00It's a bit intimidating.
04:02Down, down.
04:03I think the last two years since having them,
04:07I think they have put on a serious amount of added pressure.
04:10I think it must put people off coming back.
04:12It must do.
04:13With five children at home to feed
04:16and two employees on the books,
04:18they simply can't afford for it to fail.
04:21I'm worried about us being able to make more money,
04:24which is what we need to do.
04:25Especially in this day and age with cost to live and grosses,
04:29our business supports free families.
04:30Mm.
04:31So this needs to be sorted out.
04:34Despite the problems,
04:35Louise and Mark love the dogs far too much to let them go.
04:40I couldn't imagine my life without them.
04:43But at the same time, they make our life so hard.
04:47They just need fixing.
04:48I think they're fixable.
04:49We just don't know how to fix them.
04:50We don't know how to fix them.
04:51With everything at stake,
04:53the pressure is on for Graham to bring back the customers.
04:58Hey, it's a proper Aladdin's cave, this, isn't it?
05:00It smells lovely in here as well.
05:02It's like old wood and...
05:03Yeah, I think it's the old waxes, the stains.
05:05Yeah.
05:05Yeah, of course.
05:06The old oils.
05:07On the face of it,
05:08they're a bit full on, Ernie and Walter.
05:10The truth is, they're actually really friendly.
05:13They're getting excited and barky
05:15because they want to say hello.
05:17I notice you've got a bell at the gate there.
05:19So when the bell goes, they go absolutely nuts.
05:23Ernie normally attacks Walter.
05:25Poor old Walter.
05:26And if customers bring a dog in, that's...
05:28Oh, it's carnage.
05:28That's up a level.
05:29Must be the only shop in the country
05:31we get not annoyed when customers...
05:33Oh, yeah, you should be happy you get customers.
05:35We're like, oh, my God, we're customers!
05:38Oh, no!
05:38Graham's seen how they react to people.
05:40Now he wants to see what happens with four-legged customers.
05:46But this time, Graham's hearing something far more concerning,
05:50and it's not excitement.
05:53It's a very different sound.
05:55It's way louder.
05:59They're not happy to have somebody walking in.
06:03They're probably saying the swear word and go away.
06:08Walter, no.
06:09No.
06:10Just a normal dirty office.
06:12Yeah, yeah, yeah.
06:13Here, come on.
06:14Beware in two seconds.
06:16Yeah.
06:17Sorry about this.
06:18I'm really not sure that I want to go in.
06:20They said that they're dog-friendly, but I'm not sure that they are.
06:24Come on.
06:25Come on.
06:26In you go.
06:27Come on.
06:29She's gone, your customer.
06:31That happens quite a lot.
06:33Does it?
06:33Yeah.
06:35She didn't hang around.
06:36Silly question, why don't you leave them at home?
06:39Because we are here basically seven days a week.
06:43Probably work long hours as well, I guess, running your own business.
06:46Yeah, yeah.
06:46Absolutely.
06:46You have to come work together as well, don't you?
06:47There's two of them, both boys.
06:49Yeah.
06:49It's not as though they can't stand each other and they're fighting all the time,
06:53but they sometimes turn on each other.
06:55Yeah.
06:55It's weird.
06:56It's the minute someone comes to that gate and then they turn on each other.
07:01Right.
07:02For Graham, this behaviour is ringing alarm bells.
07:06Their excitement flips to aggression and often a bust up, which is a big problem.
07:12We put the two together and they fire off each other.
07:15And they are stubborn dogs, which might give me a problem in training.
07:20Do you know what?
07:21I've got a lot on my plate today.
07:23Coming up.
07:24Give it your best shot.
07:26Graham's back at puppy school.
07:28That was interesting.
07:29She looked a bit ploddy there.
07:30Where a reluctant student is raising alarm bells.
07:34Right.
07:34I've spotted something.
07:35He meets a doberman who's balmy for brushes.
07:39Oh, blimey.
07:40And a parrot who thinks it's hilarious.
07:42He's sat there on his perch going, look at these idiots.
07:45Yeah.
07:46And will Ernie and Walter ever become model employees?
07:50They don't know it yet, but I'm about to ring the bell.
07:52Three, two, one.
08:03Graham's at an antique shop where customers are fast becoming history.
08:08They said that they're dog friendly, but I'm not sure that they are.
08:11No!
08:12No!
08:13Ernie and Walter's overexcited meet and greet is putting off customers.
08:17It's like a switch.
08:18Doorbell goes and they are mental.
08:21As they scare off passing trade from local dog walkers, Louise and Mark are losing faith
08:26if they'll ever get these two under control.
08:29We've tried many times various methods of training.
08:32We've tried on them and we can't master them.
08:35Graham is confident he can turn these gatekeepers into calm greeters,
08:40if he can stop them winding each other up.
08:43I always think training two dogs at the same time,
08:46it's not just twice as difficult as one dog,
08:49because you think you're there and then it only takes one to chirp up,
08:52and they're both away again.
08:54And they're always together, aren't they? They've never really been apart.
08:57And the best place to start is the trigger that sets them off.
09:01I think we should start with the doorbell.
09:04For Ernie and Walter, the doorbell means one thing.
09:07Someone's arriving.
09:09And that anticipation is pushing their excitement levels through the roof.
09:14And if they're already here with excitement when they see a person or a dog,
09:18they're going to just spike out of control.
09:20That's what we're seeing right now.
09:22So if we can get them desensitised to the doorbell...
09:25Yeah.
09:26..then it goes ding-dong.
09:27They go, eh, I'm a bothered.
09:29Maybe they're two or three out of ten excited,
09:32and we've got half a chance when they get outside.
09:34And the way to do that is to ring it a lot with nobody there.
09:37Yeah, makes sense. Right?
09:39Armed with a remote, Graham's plan is simple.
09:42They don't know it yet, but I'm about to ring the bell.
09:44Three, two, one.
09:45Ring the doorbell.
09:46There we go.
09:47Oh, off they go.
09:49Bosh.
09:49Open the door.
09:50Nobody there, right?
09:51Until Ernie and Walter lose all interest in it.
09:55Actually, it's interesting.
09:56They were quite excited, but they weren't barking and shouting.
09:58No.
09:59With no visitor at the gate...
10:01Hello, boys.
10:01..they switch to searching inside.
10:04There's something going on because I've heard that ding-dong
10:06and there's nobody outside,
10:07so maybe there's somebody in the back of the barn.
10:10Graham wants to show them...
10:14There's nobody there.
10:16No, he's always angry about it.
10:18..ding-dong doesn't mean...
10:21..there's reason to get worked up.
10:24And again.
10:26Hello, Wally.
10:28Why did you bark, Wally?
10:29I have no idea where I barked.
10:33Bless him.
10:34I'm hoping the penny's going to drop, isn't it?
10:37Doorbell.
10:38It's nowhere near as exciting as it used to be.
10:40The only problem with this is...
10:42..I have no idea how long this is going to take.
10:46No.
10:47Didn't know what to do then, did he?
10:49No.
10:49Right now, he's at the stage where he's like, you never know.
10:52Yeah.
10:53There might still be somebody out there.
10:55After finding nothing to get excited about...
10:59..both dogs are calming down.
11:01There's nobody there.
11:02Ding-dong.
11:03They've come in again.
11:04Hello.
11:05Hello, Walter.
11:06Hello.
11:07Hello, mate.
11:08Now, this is interesting.
11:10They've started to come and check in on us.
11:11Let's try again, then.
11:13It's taken an hour.
11:16Oh, that's good.
11:17Nothing.
11:18Silence.
11:19Penny might have dropped.
11:20Yay!
11:20Good boy.
11:22Good boy.
11:23But now the doorbell gets nothing.
11:26That was...
11:27That was...
11:28That was really good.
11:28That was good, yeah.
11:29Now they're desensitised to the sound...
11:34Did you hear that?
11:35Nothing.
11:36Exactly.
11:37Hello, Wally.
11:38Hello, mate.
11:39Hello.
11:40Stage two.
11:41How to give a warm welcome to actual customers.
11:44It's time to introduce a person at the gate.
11:47If we ring the bell, they go outside, see the people.
11:50If they jump and they bark, we're going to do nothing.
11:54Once the dogs calm down, they can then come through the gate.
11:57OK.
11:58Earlier, the bell was the trigger for total chaos.
12:01Now Graham's hoping desensitising them
12:04will keep them calm when people arrive.
12:06But it's still a gamble.
12:09I only need one of them to get it wrong and bark,
12:12and they're both going to be barking, aren't they?
12:14Could be a long day.
12:17Right, here we go.
12:23Oh.
12:24That's a lot calmer.
12:26Hey, this is good.
12:28Oh, yeah, you all right?
12:29Hey, look at this.
12:30Wow, good boys.
12:31Good boys.
12:32Wow.
12:32Did not expect to see that.
12:34Stage two of Mission Warm Welcome has beaten the odds.
12:38Wow, I didn't expect anything like that.
12:41It was amazing.
12:42But it could still go wrong.
12:44So what we'll do now is, your next thing is,
12:46you would pop them on lead, wouldn't you?
12:47Yeah.
12:48If they stay calm, they can hang out with the visitors.
12:51Come on in, guys.
12:53Come on.
12:53Yeah, lovely.
12:54But only if all four paws remain on the ground at all times.
12:58This, by the way, is very good.
12:59So, if this is good, what should we be doing?
13:01Good boy.
13:02Well done.
13:02And they must be rewarded for doing so.
13:05Can you give him a little fuss if you like?
13:07He's a nice man.
13:09But...
13:09No.
13:10No.
13:10The moment they jump up, the meet and greet is over.
13:14That's it, yeah, you can go.
13:15No.
13:16Yeah.
13:17He should be thinking, what?
13:19What?
13:19What did I do?
13:20What did I do, right?
13:20He is, I think.
13:22You see the game we're playing?
13:23If they're good, the people come to them.
13:25If they jump, the people go away.
13:27Right, yeah, come back through, the dogs are calm.
13:30Good boy.
13:32That's it.
13:32This time, Walter's staying calmly on all fours.
13:36Good boy.
13:37Good boy.
13:38Oh, this is brilliant.
13:40I don't think they've ever been this calm.
13:42Well, I tell you what, why don't we go inside?
13:44We could even let them off lead and see what happens.
13:46Yeah?
13:48After you.
13:49Now, instead of the usual overexcited barking, running and jumping...
13:53Good boy, Walt.
13:54There you go.
13:55Ernie and Walter's meet and greet is calm and respectful.
13:59Hey, look at this.
14:04Nice to tell her for the books.
14:08Very good, eh?
14:09Yeah.
14:09That is amazing.
14:10They are like different dogs.
14:12Great, isn't it?
14:13And it's easy to replicate, isn't it?
14:14I can't believe after just such a short period and just such simple instructions the dogs had and just what
14:24a difference it makes.
14:25Ooh.
14:26This morning when I first rang that bell, the sound that came out of the barn was pretty scary, but
14:31I think this afternoon you'd see those two dogs come out of the barn and you wouldn't need to be
14:35a dog expert to know that lovely dogs.
14:39Our stress levels are going to come down.
14:41Yeah.
14:42We might have more customers.
14:43Yeah, which helps.
14:45Yeah.
14:45Might even have a positive effect on the bottom line, eh?
14:48Yeah.
14:49Two-legged visitors are one thing, but other dogs are the real problem.
14:56It's territorial and it needs a completely different approach, so Graham will have to come back and tackle it.
15:04Hey!
15:05Hey!
15:06Oh!
15:06Before that, he's heading 80 miles west to a stable near Leicester.
15:12Oh!
15:13Off, Troy!
15:14Off!
15:14Off!
15:15Four-year-old Doberman Troy...
15:17Let's go!
15:18...goes bonkers for brushes.
15:20Because he's got the bristles, I can't get them off him.
15:23No!
15:25It's 50 kilograms, so no!
15:27Let's go!
15:29This is like, he will not let you have it.
15:31That is his.
15:32And I don't like that kind of vibe.
15:35Let's go!
15:35Troy's tug-of-war game makes life impossible for Amelie.
15:39Let go, Troy!
15:41Let go!
15:42You need a brush to do all the stables.
15:44You need a brush to sweep the yard.
15:46You need a brush to sweep the gangway.
15:49A brush is going to be involved pretty much all the time.
15:53This is his heaven and my hell.
15:55No!
15:56Get off!
15:57Get off!
15:58Off!
15:59Off!
16:01Get off!
16:02Off!
16:03Morning!
16:04Morning, Graham!
16:06Morning!
16:07Right!
16:08I see your problem.
16:09Yeah!
16:11He won't let go.
16:12No, he won't, will he?
16:13And if I...
16:14When I try and get it with my hands, that's when he's accidentally bit me.
16:17Oh, he's got you.
16:18Yeah.
16:19Yeah.
16:19So I don't want to do that.
16:23Oh, you've got no chance, have you?
16:25No, no.
16:25You can't do it.
16:27Oh, no.
16:28That's it now.
16:28That's gone.
16:28Oh, now we've had it.
16:30Let's go!
16:32Yeah, it's pretty serious stuff.
16:34Oh, well done.
16:35Well done.
16:35I tell you what, shall I?
16:37Just chuck it in the bed.
16:38Chuck it up there.
16:39Yeah, thank you.
16:40It's crystal clear to Graham just how bad this is.
16:44But this brush battle is just a warm up.
16:47Well, it's bad here, but it's worse at home.
16:50Really?
16:50Yes.
16:51I've got Dwayne to contend with.
16:52Dwayne, is that your other half?
16:54You'll see.
16:55Lead on.
16:56At home, Amelie's got an even greater foe to contend with.
17:01Dwayne, an African grey parrot who's a very naughty boy.
17:06I don't know much about parrots.
17:08I do know they're clever, though.
17:10He's very clever.
17:11Oh, is he?
17:11And he makes a lot of mess.
17:16No!
17:17Oh, blimey.
17:18Right.
17:19Can't keep up with this.
17:21And look, Dwayne's quite happy at the showdown.
17:24This is TV for him.
17:25He's just sat there on his perch going, look at these ears.
17:28I mean, chucking seeds out because you know that she's then going to get a brush out and you know
17:33what happens when a brush comes out and he just sits back and just watches the entertainment.
17:37Time and time again.
17:38He's hilarious.
17:39He's a jerk, that parrot.
17:41The faster Amelie sweeps, the more mess Dwayne makes on purpose, winding Troy up even more.
17:48Until...
17:48Oh, he's broken it.
17:50It's broken.
17:53It might seem like a big game, but the problem is, every time Troy plays it, it's a brush with
18:00death.
18:01I'm really concerned about if he bites a brush, if he gets one of the little bristles stuck in his
18:07throat or even if he ingests it.
18:09He's had four operations on his stomach.
18:11Four operations?
18:13Wow.
18:13And that started from when he ate a stick as a puppy.
18:16They were moved between his small and large intestines and that's the last they can do.
18:20Right.
18:21They said they cannot operate again.
18:22Can't do that again.
18:23So if he eats anything that he shouldn't, that it's, well...
18:27That could be the end of it.
18:28It could be, yeah.
18:29For Troy, one swallowed bristle could be game over.
18:33So Graham's got his work cut out.
18:36I think we need to be realistic about how far I'm going to get today, particularly with view to Dwayne
18:42the parrot.
18:43He's an evil genius, that parrot.
18:45I'm anything but a pessimist, but realistically, there's a lot of ways this can go wrong.
18:52Coming up, Graham's puppy class gets competitive.
18:55Welcome to the Recall Arena.
18:58Loki can struggle with distractions, so I think this is going to be a real test.
19:02Loki, come!
19:03Right, here we go.
19:04Graham's called back to Kings Lynn, where Ernie and Walter are kicking off at four-legged customers.
19:13And with a life on the line...
19:16Game over.
19:18Can Graham stop Dwayne's fun and games and Troy's obsession?
19:23He's not showing any signs of stopping and I didn't see that coming at this stage.
19:35No!
19:36Uh-oh!
19:36No!
19:37Not my new brush!
19:38In Leicester, Graham is tackling Troy's brush obsession.
19:41Oh, he's brushing it.
19:43And Dwayne the African Grey is loving every minute.
19:47He's very clever.
19:48How is he?
19:49And he makes a lot of mess.
19:50But what looks like a farce could become a tragedy.
19:54No!
19:55He's had four operations on his stomach.
19:57Four operations, wow.
19:59They said they cannot operate again.
20:01If he did swallow something like a piece of brush, it would be the game over.
20:05The pressure is on Graham to get a fix and kill two birds with one stone.
20:11No!
20:13Oh!
20:13If Graham can fix the broom issues, it will hopefully fix the parrot issues because Dwayne will find it boring.
20:21Therefore, he will keep his seeds in his cage and I will have to sweep them up and then everyone's
20:26winning.
20:26Graham's theory is simple.
20:29Troy loves the attention and excitement of the game with Mum.
20:32Anybody who knows Dobies will tell you they form a really strong bond with their person.
20:38They just love being together with them.
20:40Why don't we use that to help us fix the problem?
20:44And you've got budgies as well.
20:46It's Pearl and Dean.
20:48The plan is to use a new game with new rules.
20:52Staying calm scores attention, but go for the brush and game over.
20:57If he doesn't react or he looks and goes, nah,
21:00all of those things would be a reason to say good boy.
21:03If he makes the wrong decision, we're going to say game over.
21:08And then we take him out.
21:10He's out there thinking, no, I want to be with my mum.
21:14And that's what I'm bargaining on.
21:16Graham's gambling on one more thing.
21:19If Troy ignores the brush, Dwayne loses the entertainment and should stop dropping seeds.
21:25So let's just see what happens if I...
21:27Good boy!
21:29With Dwayne keeping watch from his perch across the room...
21:34Oh, nearly.
21:35So if he does that again, you know what to say.
21:38..Troy has everyone's attention.
21:42Game over.
21:44Oh, well done.
21:45Blimey.
21:46I nearly went out myself then.
21:48Don't mess with that, do you?
21:50Good tone of voice.
21:53Tempting though it is, we've got to wait for a pause.
21:57Troy can only rejoin mum when he's calm.
22:02Good, I think you're letting him back in now.
22:04OK.
22:04Yep.
22:05On lead.
22:06Good boy!
22:08Is he going to...?
22:09No, all right.
22:10Game over.
22:13And we just keep repeating this.
22:16If Troy loses his cool...
22:19Game over.
22:19..he's sent out before the brush game even starts.
22:23Much to Dwayne's disappointment.
22:25But now, Troy appears to prefer the new game.
22:30He's taking himself off to bed.
22:32Fine, all right, OK.
22:34I'll crack on and do a bit...
22:37Good boy!
22:381-0 to Team Graham.
22:40Good.
22:41Well, this is different.
22:43..but will he play ball when mum takes control?
22:47Now, word of warning.
22:49Don't go bananas.
22:51He's like, oh, now, that's interesting.
22:53All right.
22:54Game over.
22:56Come on.
22:57You're blowing it out, lad.
22:59Troy is trying to restart the game.
23:02Try again, young man.
23:03Come on then.
23:04No.
23:05All right.
23:06Game over.
23:07You know the score.
23:08And keeps getting sent off.
23:11He's a bit like a teenager.
23:12He's like, aw!
23:14Right.
23:15Shall we try again?
23:16But instead of calming down...
23:20All right.
23:21Game over.
23:21Each time he's coming back more determined to put on the show Dwayne's desperate for.
23:28Now, this is unexpected.
23:29He's barking his head off at the minute.
23:30He's not showing any signs of stopping.
23:34Right.
23:35Game over.
23:36And I didn't see that coming at this stage.
23:39So what's going wrong here?
23:42But Graham spotted something.
23:45Hang on a minute.
23:46What is he looking at?
23:48He's not looking at the brush.
23:50He's barking his head off and looking at Mum.
23:53And there's the clue.
23:55Hang on a minute.
23:56When he calms down, I'm going to let him get nearer to you.
24:00Good boy.
24:01There we go.
24:02Oh, God.
24:02Yeah, look.
24:03See?
24:04He's not focused on the brush right now.
24:06He's just like, Mum, Mum, Mum, I don't want to be apart from you.
24:08So Graham wants to flip the focus.
24:11If he behaves, he can stay near Mum.
24:14So I can keep a hold of him.
24:16Yeah.
24:16And we can do a little bit of brushing while he's at your side, maybe.
24:19Let's just see how we get on.
24:20No.
24:23Good boy.
24:24Okay.
24:25Tiny bit of a brush.
24:27And pause.
24:28Good boy.
24:29All right.
24:30Bit more brushing.
24:30Troy is learning that staying calm.
24:32Oh, lovely.
24:33That's good.
24:34Keeps him close to Mum.
24:35Good boy.
24:37And that the brush is no longer a toy.
24:39That's really good.
24:41Oh, hello.
24:42Okay.
24:43I'm honoured.
24:45Right.
24:45This is good.
24:48And just like that, Troy turns a blind eye to Amelie sweeping up.
24:53Good boy.
24:54Oh, that's brilliant.
24:55Much to Dwayne's great disappointment.
24:58Well, what do you reckon?
24:59I'm super impressed.
25:01Until now, Troy's brush obsession has been the spark for Dwayne's favourite trick.
25:07Making a mess so Mum has to clean up.
25:10Oh.
25:11But if Troy sticks to the new rules, it could put an end to the dangerous fun and games once
25:16and for all.
25:17Let's see if you can sweep up some seeds because you definitely couldn't do it this morning.
25:22That's it.
25:23You carry on sweeping.
25:28Well, he's watching intently but he's not doing anything about it.
25:32Mission accomplished.
25:34Nailed it.
25:34Brilliant.
25:35Fantastic.
25:36Good boy.
25:38Well done, Troy.
25:40Who's the clever boy then?
25:42I'm actually quite speechless because I didn't think that we'd be able to sweep some seeds up without it going
25:49crazy.
25:50Sure, there's work to do.
25:51The family's got to do this training down at the yard as well.
25:54But I think the future's really bright for them all now.
25:58You are clever.
26:02Graham's taking a break from badly behaved dogs to stop the next generation ending up on his books.
26:09For the last four months, he's been running puppy classes in the Cotswolds, giving these young pups the milestone skills
26:17they'll need for life.
26:19So far, they've studied socialisation.
26:22Good boy, Tony.
26:22Good boy.
26:23Basic commands.
26:25Sit.
26:26Good.
26:27Go on.
26:27And loose lead walking.
26:29Yay!
26:30Good girl.
26:31And today's milestone is recall.
26:35Today's training is, I think, one of the hardest things you can teach a dog, whether they're young or old,
26:41frankly.
26:41But it's really important.
26:43Back in class are Mary and Colin, with farm dog Mr Todd.
26:48Are you excited?
26:49Charlotte, with future office dog Boo.
26:52A bit more learning today.
26:54Hi.
26:54Lorraine, with daughter Sian, helping for the first time with Loki.
26:58And Karen, with daughter Orla and rescue pup Winnie.
27:02Let's go inside.
27:05Morning, everybody.
27:06Hiya.
27:07Hiya.
27:07Welcome back.
27:08They're a bit bigger than last time.
27:11They're enormous.
27:13So today's lesson is something that's going to give the dogs a bit more freedom.
27:17Are you ready?
27:17Yeah.
27:18Come on then, follow me.
27:19Let's start.
27:20Are you ready, Loki?
27:21When it comes to getting your dog to come back to you when called, Graham wants to give
27:26the owners the best possible foundation.
27:29Dart!
27:30Because one of the biggest mistakes is letting dogs off lead too soon.
27:35Dart!
27:36Then expecting them to come back when called.
27:38Stormzy, come back.
27:40Turning walks into muddy chases.
27:42No.
27:43Come back.
27:43Vanished dogs.
27:45Savage!
27:45And near misses you don't want to think about.
27:49Oh!
27:49Jasmine!
27:50The problem is dogs don't speak human.
27:54So first they need to learn exactly what you're asking.
27:58And Graham's first rule of recall?
28:00Make coming back the most exciting game in town.
28:05First of all, I'm just going to demo something.
28:06So, when we get Mr Todd, I'm going to pop him on a long line.
28:10There we go.
28:11Have you got any treats that you use with him?
28:12I have.
28:13So, I'm going to let him know what I've got.
28:15And then, without saying very much, hey, what's this?
28:18What's this?
28:19Yeah!
28:20Good boy!
28:22Because everything we've done so far at Puppy School,
28:24it's all been about keeping a lid on excitement, staying calm.
28:28But recall, you can be as excited as you like.
28:31Yay!
28:33That's the very beginnings of the system.
28:35But I'm bedding in this, hey, look, if you run to me,
28:38it's great, isn't it?
28:40What didn't I do?
28:41Say, come here or come on.
28:43Yeah.
28:43There was no recall command at this stage.
28:46Before they can introduce the command,
28:48all the pups need to learn the game.
28:51So, all you're going to do, get your dog in position,
28:53and you're going to run backwards that way,
28:55and see if you can get your dog to follow you.
28:57And remember, excitement.
28:59First up is Loki.
29:01Getting him excited is easy.
29:04Hey!
29:05Hey!
29:05Look at that!
29:06I'll catch you!
29:07The problem is he always takes it too far.
29:10Calm down.
29:11Calm down.
29:12All right.
29:12Calm down.
29:13Oi.
29:14No.
29:14You know, I said fill your boots with excitement.
29:16That didn't refer to you.
29:18Next up is Winnie.
29:19And for this rescue pup...
29:21Come on, then.
29:21..recall training couldn't come sooner.
29:24Ola, looks like you're doing the handling, are you?
29:25Yep.
29:26Well done.
29:26So, my partner took Winnie to the field behind us
29:31and let her off, and she bolted.
29:34She did not come back to her name.
29:36It was just absolute panic.
29:39Right, then.
29:39Give it your best shot.
29:41Right.
29:42Let's go.
29:43Let's go.
29:44That's it.
29:45Good girl.
29:46That was interesting.
29:47Do that again for me.
29:48Because she looked a bit ploddy there, didn't she?
29:50Mm.
29:50Wasn't as keen.
29:51No.
29:52Then there might be a reason for that.
29:57Right.
29:57I've spotted something.
29:59If I'm your dog, and I'm being pulled this way,
30:02what am I going to do?
30:03Resist.
30:04Correct.
30:05Try that again, but without the tension in the lead.
30:07OK.
30:08Yeah?
30:08OK.
30:09Off you go.
30:10There you go.
30:11Keep going, keep going, keep going.
30:13That's it.
30:14Brilliant.
30:15Glever girl.
30:16There you go.
30:17Now all the pups are excited to chase their owners for a treat.
30:20Great.
30:21Lesson two, connect that chase with a command.
30:26So, if I can borrow him again.
30:28Now each time...
30:30Toddy, come.
30:31Graham marks the action with a clear command.
30:35There we go.
30:36Let's try a bit further away.
30:38Toddy, come.
30:41There you go.
30:42Good boy.
30:43Let's get you back to your mum.
30:44Graham wants everyone to use their dog's name and a command they'll remember.
30:49I might choose come back because that is what I say when she goes really far.
30:53Naturally, I say come back.
30:54Brilliant.
30:55If that comes naturally to you, that's fine.
30:58It's key to use the exact words every time.
31:02Off you go then.
31:04That's it.
31:06Boo, come.
31:07I thought you said you were going to say...
31:10Yeah, yeah.
31:10Come back.
31:12Try again.
31:13The theory is that by using the same command...
31:16Boo, come back.
31:17Yeah, I love it.
31:18..during the chase games...
31:20Boo, come back.
31:21..Boo should connect running to Charlotte with those magic words.
31:25She knows the game now, you see.
31:27Good.
31:28You've got the idea.
31:29Now over to Loki.
31:31But will his excitement get the better of him?
31:33Loki, come.
31:35Yeah, that's it.
31:37There you go.
31:38I think it was going to be.
31:40Understandably, Lorraine tries to keep a lid on her excitement.
31:43And if you possibly could make your voice a bit louder, bright,
31:46that would work even better.
31:48But for this to work, Loki must learn the command.
31:51All right then.
31:52Loki, come.
31:53Yay!
31:54That worked.
31:55Good boy.
31:55Because your voice was a bit louder, a bit brighter.
31:58Yay!
31:58Well done.
32:00Now Loki knows what's expected, he's a little less excitable.
32:05Graham's built recall in stages.
32:08The chase game...
32:09Good boy!
32:11..then the command...
32:12Tony, come.
32:14..now comes the real test.
32:16Will they come back on words alone?
32:18So, welcome to the recall arena.
32:23What I'm going to do is ask you all to come in one by one,
32:25see if you can recall your dog from one corner of this to the other,
32:29off lead.
32:31First in is Loki.
32:33He's done well with Lorraine,
32:35but Graham wants daughter Sian to try and recall him.
32:38But can he focus?
32:40Sian, you up for it?
32:41Yeah, I think so.
32:42I do know that Loki can struggle with distractions,
32:46so I think this is going to be a real, real test.
32:49OK.
32:50So, remember, really bright, happy call, yeah?
32:53Yeah.
32:53I was really nervous about whether he was going to actually come back to me.
32:57Off you go.
32:59Loki, come!
33:00Come!
33:01Yay!
33:01Fantastic!
33:02That's it!
33:03Yeah!
33:04Good boy!
33:06Hello, Boo!
33:07Now little Boo.
33:08But will Charlotte remember the command?
33:12Boo!
33:13Come back!
33:13Right!
33:14Lovely!
33:15Good girl!
33:16Like a shot!
33:18Never seen such a little dog run so fast, have you?
33:21Next, Mr Todd.
33:23Toddy!
33:24Come!
33:24Yay!
33:25Is a natural.
33:26Fantastic!
33:27Hey, I'm loving that.
33:29And last to enter the arena is Winnie.
33:32How are you feeling now?
33:34Yeah, all right.
33:34Still a bit nervous.
33:35That's OK.
33:36Ola has good cause to be nervous.
33:39Last week, Winnie Bolted went off lead and wouldn't come back.
33:43Leading up to the very last part with the recall,
33:45I was really worried due to Winnie not really having any.
33:50So Graham wants to really test Winnie by adding a distraction.
33:55I've got food and she knows it.
33:57Right.
33:58Try calling out.
33:59Winnie, come!
34:02Winnie, come!
34:03Come on!
34:06Winnie, come!
34:08Right.
34:09Take a step forward.
34:10When she looks at you, go backwards, yeah?
34:12OK.
34:12Try again.
34:14Winnie, come!
34:15Come on, Winnie!
34:16Yes!
34:16There you go!
34:17Yay!
34:19Good girl!
34:21Well done!
34:23I pushed you there, but I thought you could both do it.
34:26When Winnie came back, I was so relieved
34:29because it's such a big thing for her.
34:31So now to see that she has a bit more recall is absolutely amazing.
34:35Well done, everybody.
34:36I thought that was great.
34:37Obviously, you've got to keep it up.
34:39You want to get to that stage where they hear the call,
34:41it's automatic.
34:42I'm off, you know?
34:43If there's one thing I would want you to remember about recall,
34:46make it fun.
34:47Give yourselves a round of applause.
34:48Yes!
34:49Well done!
34:49Yay!
34:51Good girl, big.
34:54Coming up, Graham might have got Ernie and Walter
34:57to welcome people into the shop.
34:59Three, two, one, off we jolly well go.
35:02But dogs proved to be a far tougher challenge.
35:04I don't think I've ever seen Ernie react like that.
35:08He was doing somersaults.
35:17Graham's heading back to see Louise and Mark in Norfolk.
35:20They run an antique shop where passing dog walkers
35:23should mean passing trade.
35:25But their two-year-old boxer-cross Basset Hound brothers,
35:29Ernie and Walter, are scaring customers off.
35:33I think we definitely lost business because of them.
35:36And with five kids between them,
35:38and a business that supports three families,
35:41this needs to change.
35:43Last time, Graham used desensitisation training
35:47to bring their excitement levels down.
35:50Did you hear that?
35:52Nothing.
35:52Exactly.
35:54And taught them how to meet and greet people nicely.
35:57Hey, this is good.
35:58But when customers have dogs,
36:01their excitement explodes into aggression.
36:05And that's the problem Graham needs to fix today.
36:08Now, that's a problem,
36:09because a lot of people do walk in with dogs.
36:12And then, well, they do behave in quite an aggressive way.
36:16It's not very nice.
36:17To get Ernie and Walter used to socialising with other dogs,
36:21Graham's brought them to neutral territory.
36:25Graham's helped us previously with the doorbell issue we had,
36:28and that worked so well.
36:30I'm hoping he can work his magic on this one,
36:33but I'm not sure.
36:35Today, French bulldog Dexter is bravely volunteering.
36:38With these two, they sort of run each other up, you know.
36:42So I think what we're going to do is put some distance
36:44between themselves as well as the other dog.
36:49Right.
36:50Just wait for it.
36:53Ernie!
36:54No.
36:55Walter, no.
36:56All right.
36:56Just wait for it.
36:58The principle is let the excitement pass...
37:01..and do nothing.
37:02..but mark the behaviour you want...
37:07..the moment they settle.
37:10Right, you know what to do.
37:11I'll go and see Louise.
37:13Good boy.
37:14Good boy.
37:14That's better, Walt.
37:15Good boy.
37:16..while Walter is calm, Ernie isn't.
37:19All right, let's wait for him to calm down again.
37:21But by remembering the principle of ignoring the bad
37:24and praising the good...
37:26Good boy.
37:26Good boy.
37:27Good.
37:28Good boy.
37:29Well done, Ernie.
37:30Oh, my goodness.
37:31Look at him.
37:33Yeah.
37:33Mark quickly turns it around.
37:35So far, so good, Mark.
37:37That's really good.
37:37We're getting there, I think.
37:38Yeah.
37:39I don't think I've ever seen Ernie react like that.
37:42He's always doing somersault.
37:43Three, two, one, off we jolly well go.
37:49Yep, that'll do us.
37:53Fantastic.
37:54Hey, I'm happy with that.
37:55Time to get closer.
37:56You ready?
37:57Yep.
37:57Right, come with me, Louise.
37:58We're going to split the difference.
38:00Now the storm has passed,
38:02Graham is confident the dogs know what's expected.
38:05Well, this is interesting,
38:07because Ernie kicked off to start with,
38:09but he's calmed down.
38:10So let's see if he can keep calm
38:12when we move the dogs closer together.
38:15That'll be a big test.
38:17Ooh, ooh.
38:17This does feel a lot closer, doesn't it?
38:19I reckon we do ten perces, everybody, eh?
38:21Three, two, one, off we go.
38:25Lovely.
38:26We'll try and keep abreast of each other.
38:27Good boy, Walter.
38:28Super.
38:29Really nice.
38:30Good boy.
38:31By walking together, the pressure drops.
38:34That's it.
38:35Good boy, Ernie.
38:36Good boy.
38:37I tell you what,
38:37we could squeeze in a bit tighter, you know.
38:40Both dogs are settling.
38:42That's pretty good, isn't it?
38:43Look at that great walk.
38:44It's great, isn't it?
38:48Oh, you let yourself down there, eh?
38:50All right.
38:51And we'll stop.
38:52It's all right, don't worry.
38:53But doing nothing and staying calm
38:55keeps Ernie's outburst brief.
38:58Good boy.
38:59That's it.
39:01Good boy.
39:03And after a few more rounds...
39:05All right, let's go again, everybody.
39:06The plan is working.
39:07For the first time, the brothers are with another dog.
39:11And they're not kicking off.
39:14Well, what do you reckon?
39:15Amazed.
39:16I'll settle for amazed.
39:17Yeah.
39:17That's fine.
39:18Yeah.
39:19Out here it's working.
39:21But the real test is back on home turf.
39:25We need to do the same thing again.
39:27I think they're probably going to kick off.
39:29But what we learned this morning was, yeah, you get a bit of a storm.
39:32But after the storm, they're going to come.
39:35For stage two, Graham's brought in Paul and Labrador Max.
39:39Good.
39:40All right, here we go.
39:41If Ernie and Walter are going to accept dogs near the shop...
39:44That'll do it.
39:45..they need to learn this.
39:47Protest all you like, nobody's leaving.
39:54So, at this stage, we just wait for it, right?
40:01Wait for it.
40:03Good lad.
40:04No, Ernie. Ernie, no.
40:06There you go.
40:06Good boy.
40:07Good boy.
40:08That's all right.
40:09Give him a moment.
40:10Good boy.
40:11You see, by now, normally, you'd have been inside and put the dogs away.
40:16Yeah, we'd have put them away.
40:17Yeah.
40:19The next stage is for Max to come through the gate.
40:22I think it's probably going to blow up again, but you know what to do, don't you?
40:25Yep.
40:25Calm.
40:26Do nothing.
40:27Yeah.
40:27There you go, mate.
40:30Good.
40:31There we go.
40:34Good boy.
40:35Good boy.
40:36Good boy.
40:37As per, he's calmed down first.
40:39Good boy.
40:40Ernie.
40:41So that was definitely a lot shorter, that.
40:42Yeah, that was.
40:43Yeah.
40:44Well, this is brilliant.
40:45The obvious next move is to ask Paul and Max to walk in the shop.
40:49And then, but whatever happens, we'll just go in.
40:52Until now, any dog coming near the shop has meant one thing.
40:57Chaos.
40:59Have they done enough to turn it around?
41:02All right, Paul?
41:07It seems so.
41:09Right, we'll follow them in.
41:10Good boys.
41:11This is brilliant.
41:12Good boys.
41:14Yeah, in you go.
41:15Come on.
41:16Go on, chap.
41:17But the first time in two years.
41:19Ha!
41:19Brilliant.
41:20The shop is well and truly dog friendly again.
41:24Well, not about you, but I thought that was quite surprising.
41:28Having those two with another dog in here, like this, is incredible.
41:33Yeah.
41:33So I think going forward, you know, if you've got customers with dogs that you could ask
41:37to help out.
41:38Yeah.
41:38You just need the time to ride the storm.
41:41Yeah.
41:42And you'll end up with a result like this every time.
41:44Amazing.
41:44It's just going to be life-changing for us.
41:48If we can have calm dogs like this when people come in, I mean, people might actually
41:53stay.
41:54Yes.
41:55And the longer they stay, the more they spend.
41:58Yeah.
41:59Today's gone amazingly well.
42:01From knowing what they're like when they get super excited, from that point to them basically
42:07laying on the floor, it's just been incredible.
42:10It's been amazing.
42:11I never thought we'd get to that stage.
42:13I think that's been a great result today.
42:15I'm chuffed.
42:16I mean, we've got happy dogs, happy business owners, and happy customers as well.
42:20That's got to be good, hasn't it?
42:22Yeah.
42:25In Leicester, whilst Troy has stopped attacking brushes, Dwayne is still hoping for a show.
42:31I can manage to sweep Dwayne's seeds.
42:34He still occasionally throws them out to annoy me.
42:37But he hasn't gone for the broom, and I haven't bought a new one since he's been, which has
42:40been brilliant.
42:41In Kings Lynn, Ernie and Walter's staff training is going well.
42:46They're definitely not as reactive to dogs, and definitely better with the doorbell.
42:51Doorbell, yeah.
42:52They keep pressing, don't they?
42:53Yeah.
42:54They're definitely chilled out on that one.
42:56And across the country, our puppies have been doing their homework on recall.
43:01Come back.
43:01And there's real progress.
43:05Sydney, come!
43:06Although Sydney's a little too enthusiastic.
43:11If you think your badly behaved dog could do with Graham's help, then why not get in touch?
43:17Details can be found at www.channel5.com forward slash take part.
43:23Ziggy, no.
43:53Siopal nhau.
43:53If you want to see a imaginary date on this, I'll be right away.
43:53For the reason, if people need to문う the lottery number, they were not coming, aren't coming out.
