Dramatic waves turn deadly in Guanacaste! Five people are still missing after two small boats capsized due to intense surf.

Authorities are launching a large-scale search and rescue operation along the Pacific coast, from Playa Negra to Tamarindo. The incident occurred early Monday morning, with the national emergency system receiving reports of the wrecks.

The harsh weather conditions, attributed to Tropical Storm Cristina, have battered Guanacaste and other Pacific coastal areas, including Puntarenas. Sailors and residents are urged to heed official warnings and stay out of the water.

Unprecedented wave heights, estimated between three and five meters, have caused significant disruption and posed a severe threat to mariners. One survivor from Playa Negra recounted his harrowing experience, managing to reach shore using salvaged fuel containers.
