08:15Spring.
08:20Wage negotiations have officially started in Japan the main goal for
08:25workers is to win raises that will keep ahead of inflation right but there's
08:30also growing concern about the gap between hikes at big companies and smaller firms.
08:35For the details, Yuko Fukushima joins us from our business desk, Yuko.
08:38Yes, now this year there's a.
08:40Big push to narrow the difference between pay at small and medium sized companies
08:43and that of the corporate.
08:45Giants.
08:46That's important as almost 70% of workers in Japan are employed.
08:50By smaller firms that many are struggling to raise wages.
08:55This diner is owned by a company that runs a chain of about 80 restaurants.
09:00The operator has raised some prices.
09:02Cost cuts have also come from getting the kitchen staff.
09:05To do certain tasks that were previously outsourced.
09:08Still, the owner says it.
09:10It's not easy to pay more.
09:15wage hikes.
09:16But there are limits to what our own efforts can do.
09:18So honestly raising wages across.
09:20the board for all workers is pretty difficult.
09:23At a meeting this week, the heads of.
09:25the major labor union and business lobby agreed that passing on price hikes.
09:30is key to increasing salaries at smaller companies.
09:35Management and labor basically agree on raising wages.
09:40For small and medium sized companies to hike pay, it's very important for them to pay.
09:45to pass on their costs.
09:46We would like to strengthen our efforts on that.
09:50It is very important for major companies to take leadership.
09:55in creating an environment where wages are expected to go up every year.
10:00It's also important for them to accept the idea that their suppliers will adequately pass on.
10:05costs and increase prices.
10:09Experts on the labor market.
10:10including Yamada Shashi point out smaller companies that are allowed to raise their.
10:15product prices usually do the same for wages.
10:20Compiled data that shows what proportion of companies in Japan, the U.S. and Germany.
10:25have been able to raise their product prices.
10:28less than half of Japanese firms.
10:30have done this.
10:31Well, the figure for Germany is around 90 percent.
10:34Yamada.
10:35that explains the gap.
10:36.
10:37.
10:38.

11:29.
11:30.
11:31.
11:32.
11:34.
11:35.
11:36and there was a long period of economic stagnation.
11:39In addition, it was a...
11:41at a time when developing countries, including China,
11:43were emerging with their low-cost goods.
11:46So Japanese companies needed to lower their prices to compete globally.
11:50This...
11:51There was an inflationary mindset spread among them,
11:53and that mindset has lingered up until now.
11:56Even when the after-facts of the burst of the bubble are gone,
12:00the deflationary pressure...
12:01from Chinese companies in the global market
12:03has also eased compared to before.
12:06The government has taken some action on the issue.
12:10A law...
12:11It was revised on January 1st
12:13so that buyers of products are now prohibited...
12:16from unilaterally setting prices without consulting suppliers.
12:19It's meant to protect smaller...
12:21firms.
12:21Yamada says it's a step in the right direction, but not enough.
12:26The deflationary mindset...
12:31among Japanese companies is not completely gone,
12:33and the pyramid supply chain still exists.
12:36companies generally want to cut prices.
12:39So I think smaller companies...
12:41If they may be able to pass on their costs gradually,
12:43it will take some time for them to catch up to companies...
12:46in the U.S. and Europe.
12:47It's just a little bit...
12:48...残念ながら...
12:49...時間がかかるんじゃないか...
12:50...っていうふうに見ています.
12:51Yamada says getting bigger companies to accept price hikes is absolutely...
12:56necessary to raise overall wages.
12:59But he says managers of small firms...
13:01need to step up too.
13:021人当たりのやっぱり収益とか...
13:06small and mid-sized firms have lower profitability and sales per worker...
13:09...compared to big companies.
13:11So they need to make further efforts to automate and digitalize their workflows.
13:15That way...
13:16...they can boost efficiency and productivity.
13:18They can boost efficiency and productivity.
13:19They can boost efficiency and productivity.
13:21That's a lot of people who have...
13:23...必要なんだと思いますね.
13:24Well, Yamada says it will be difficult for a small...
13:26firms to raise productivity on their own. He sees a role for the government to step in.
13:31And support them more. And now to the markets. Well, the dollar again.
13:36And decline versus the yen. This time traders sold as U.S. President Trump was asked about.
13:41The weaker dollar and replied that the greenback was doing great.
13:46The pair went down to a level not seen since late October.
13:51Well, the Nikkei in Tokyo was weighed down by exporters because of the stronger yen, but it managed to end.
13:56And the positive after ASML, a Dutch chip industry giant, came out with.
14:01And the biggest mover in the region was the Jakarta Composite in Indonesia.
14:06It plunged more than seven and a seven point three percent leading.
14:11Stock data provider MSCI announced it would temporarily stop adding.
14:16New Indonesian stocks to its indexes. It was concerned about transparency.
14:21Many global investors looked at MSCI benchmarks to make trading decisions.
14:26And that's the biz for this Wednesday.
14:28Thank you very much for that, Yuko.
14:31Now let's go to Cholapan Sonarula in our Bangkok studio for stories making headlines.
14:36Amnesty International.
14:41This channel says the Myanmar military is evading Western sanctions by importing jet fuel.
14:46Suspected to come from Iran.
14:48It says the fuel has been used to conduct airstrikes.
14:51The human rights group released a report about the shipments earlier.
14:56This week, it said the fuel is carried to Myanmar on vessels that turn off their rails.

21:00Here in Japan, giant pandas are hugely popular.
21:04Since 1972, they've served as friendship ambassadors between Japan and China.
21:09Drawing throngs of fans at zoos and wildlife theme parks.
21:13That's right, Raja.
21:14So for many, it was a sad day to see the last of the adorable black and white.
21:19Their departure for China marks the first time.
21:24Over 50 years that the country is without a panda.
21:29Given the current frosty relations with Beijing, the chances of a new loan seem...
21:34...uncertain.
21:35Xiao Xiao and Lei Lei touch...

21:42The pair was transferred...

21:56I couldn't relax...
21:59...until I knew they had arrived safely.
22:01I'm relieved.
22:02The first...
22:04...panda arrived in Japan on loan from China in 1972 to commemorate...
22:09...normalization of bilateral ties.
22:12Ever since, Japan has...
22:14...enjoyed a panda boom.
22:19Xiao Xiao Xiao and Lei Lei were the first twin pandas born at Tokyo's Ueno Zoo.
22:24...in the duological gardens five years ago.
22:28Earlier on Sunday...
22:29...large crowds gathered at the zoo for a final look at the stars.

22:36...
22:39It's the last day, so I feel a bit sad.
22:42But just seeing them has made me feel...
22:44...a little better.
22:47Over in China...
22:48...businesses in...
22:49...of Sichuan are hoping the twins' homecoming...
22:51...will not negatively impact bilateral ties.
22:54...I want the two countries to get along.
22:58That will boost by...
22:59...and bilateral exchanges...
23:00...as well as the economy.
23:01...
23:02People from both Japan and China...
23:04...came here to welcome these twins.
23:07They share a fascination...
23:09...that transcends nationality...
23:11...but they are politics at play.
23:14One Chinese visitor called Pandas...
23:17...messengers...
23:18...the people say...
23:19of friendship. We don't know when these messengers will return to Japan.
23:24Over in Malaysia, a zoo has...
23:29has started public viewings of two pandas recently on loan from China.
23:34It's a very big start.
23:36Indonesia hosts a male and a female.
23:39The male panda, loaned by China in 2017.
23:42They produced the cup last November...
23:44Experts say China now seems to be stepping up its influence in...
23:49Southeast Asia through its famous panda diplomacy.
23:54Next, a shrine in Wakayama Prefecture in western Japan is...
23:59busy preparing good luck charms ahead of Setsubun on February 3rd.
24:04The day marks the end of winter on the traditional Japanese calendar.
24:09The auspicious charms are crafted here at the Kuma no Hayat.
24:14Kuma no Hayatama Taisha in Shingu City, which is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
24:19The ornaments called Kichou are set to bring well-being...
24:24and prosperity to families and businesses when displayed at homes and shops.
24:29to mark Setsubun.

25:06Hello.
25:07We're seeing the snow picking back...
25:09in northern areas of Japan as we have a low pressure system really helped picking up the sea
25:14effects snow. Anytime we have a system that moves through and helps to bring in that north
25:19westerly flow the cold air moves over the relatively warm water.
25:24And that generates a lot of the snow and ends up dumping it across the area. And we
25:29are looking at more snow to be a part of the story as we go into Thursday as another low cross on.
25:34And we're seeing that snow picking up along the Sea of Japan coastline.
25:39Now we're seeing a little bit of a possible break in Hokkaido because of the proximity of what
25:44the low is located. So it's chilly but likely drier on Thursday and.
25:49We're looking at some of that snow picking back up with a high of three along the.
25:54Pacific coastline from Tokyo into Osaka and Fukuoka temperatures are going to.
25:59be around nine degrees as we go through Thursday so. Still going to be a cold.
26:04day as we go through the day. Meanwhile really frigid conditions continue to be.
26:09a problem especially down into the deep south of the United States. And the problem is the.
26:14fact that we've had an ice storm that has knocked out power due to the tree.
26:19trees coming down on power lines and this has lasted for several days and so.
26:24it's rough going and the fact that we have more cold air with.
26:26overnight lows really dipping down.
26:29leading to more problems and we're expecting it to still be an issue and.
26:32the weather is going to be dry.
26:34the chilly weather will continue to be a story as we go through Wednesday and Thursday.
26:37we do have a low that's.
26:39going across the great lakes and that will help bring some lake effect snow to places like.
26:44Toronto and areas toward the east and so be prepared for some more snow as we go through Wednesday rain.
26:49toward the Pacific Northwest quick note on Europe we have the system moving through.
26:54the western portions of the continent bringing some rain from Rome into.
26:59Madrid and Lisbon snow though toward the north and east as we go through the middle of the work week.
27:04hope you have a good day wherever you are.
27:09concretely.
27:13love you love you
27:15god.
