U.S. President Donald Trump signed an initial peace agreement with Iran during a state dinner at the Palace of Versailles, marking what he described as a major step toward ending a conflict that has rattled global markets and disrupted energy supplies. The memorandum of understanding includes plans to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, begin easing sanctions, and launch negotiations aimed at securing a broader long-term agreement within the next 60 days.

Defending the decision, Trump said the deal was necessary to prevent a wider economic crisis. “I didn't want to see economic catastrophe,” he told reporters at the G7 Summit in France. “If you kept this going, that could have happened.” He also pointed to the financial markets as evidence of the world's desire for stability, adding, “Every time we talked about the possibility of peace, the stock market shot up like a rocket ship.”

While key issues surrounding Iran’s nuclear programme remain unresolved and will be addressed in future talks, Trump argued that the agreement creates an opportunity to avoid further escalation. At the same time, he maintained pressure on Tehran, warning that the United States would respond forcefully if negotiations fail to produce a final settlement.

The signing at Versailles represents one of the most significant diplomatic moves of Trump’s presidency and is expected to spark intense debate both at home and abroad.
