00:07Fresh from announcing a peace deal with Iran,
00:10President Donald Trump and G7 leaders have turned their attention to the war in Ukraine,
00:15vowing to increase military support for Kiev and tighten the screws on Moscow.
00:20Iran is going to be in the rearview mirror very soon, Trump declared.
00:24Now that this is finished, we're going to be focusing on that.
00:27See if we can get that one done.
00:29Sanctions return as oil resumes.
00:32Trump signaled that the United States could soon reimpose sanctions on Russian oil shipments,
00:37restrictions that had been temporarily eased during the Iran war to stabilize global energy markets.
00:42With the Strait of Hormuz reopening, he said the conditions had changed.
00:47Soon we'll be able to do that because the oil is now flowing,
00:50Trump told reporters in the lakeside town of Evian.
00:53We're in a position to do that very soon.
00:55The U.S. Treasury had issued waivers in March,
00:59later extended, allowing countries to buy Russian crude already loaded on vessels stranded at sea.
01:05Those exemptions are now on track to expire.
01:09G7 leaders unite in support of Ukraine.
01:12The three-day G7 summit, hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron and attended by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky,
01:20produced a unified stance on Ukraine.
01:22The leaders adopted nine joint declarations, committing to increased supply of air defense systems,
01:29anti-aircraft systems, and interceptor missiles, enhanced transfer of long-range capabilities to Ukraine,
01:36granting special licenses for foreign weapons to be manufactured directly at Ukrainian facilities,
01:41additional support to strengthen Ukraine's energy infrastructure ahead of winter.
01:46We stand united in our unwavering support for Ukraine in defending its freedom, sovereignty, and territorial integrity,
01:53the G7 leaders said in a joint statement.
01:56The leaders also agreed to increase pressure on the Russian war economy by strengthening sanctions,
02:02including on the oil and gas sectors.
02:03We consider this the right moment to proceed with additional measures, the communique said,
02:09noting that the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz reduces risks to global energy security.
02:14French President Macron hailed the summit as a moment of unity
02:18and a real change in the leaders' shared commitment to stay the course over Ukraine.
02:23Zelensky meets G7, urges talks with Putin.
02:27President Zelensky, who joined the summit at France's invitation,
02:30met with G7 leaders and held a 75-minute discussion.
02:34He described the talks as very positive and noted that there was unanimity that Russia is not winning.
02:40He urged direct talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin,
02:44saying his people had endured a terrible winter
02:46and that he wanted to hold discussions before the next one.
02:50Zelensky asked the G7 leaders to exert additional pressure on Russia to bring Putin to the table.
02:57Trump, who had not initially scheduled a formal bilateral meeting with Zelensky ahead of the summit,
03:02nevertheless engaged in discussions with him.
03:05Trump told reporters Russia should make a deal,
03:08adding that Russia had lost tremendous amounts of people, and so has Ukraine.
03:14Speaking of the potential for ending the conflict,
03:16Trump said he would do whatever I can in the meantime.
03:20Britain adds new sanctions.
03:23Alongside the G7's collective measures,
03:25the United Kingdom announced a new set of sanctions targeting companies
03:29that provide oil and financial services to Moscow.
03:32These include restrictions on ships recently purchased to transport oil from the Arctic's LNG-2 project,
03:39further squeezing Russia's ability to evade existing sanctions.
03:43The road ahead.
03:45With the Iran deal set to be signed in Switzerland on Friday,
03:48the G7's attention is now fixed on Ukraine.
03:51The summit's communique sends a clear message.
03:54The West sees an opportunity to intensify pressure on Russia as global energy markets stabilize.
04:00As Macron told reporters,
04:02the leaders all noted there was no serious willingness from Russia to discuss peace,
04:07and they are determined to act accordingly.
