00:01Hello A.D. I'm Sarah Paulson and welcome to my Malibu getaway. Come on in.
00:18There's three rooms. There's a bathroom, a bedroom and a living room slash kitchen. I like a slash.
00:23Welcome to my living room which is really tiny.
00:27Everything about the house is quite cozy because of the size of it.
00:30But I think we did some really special things with the space or Amy Kehoe did some very special things
00:34with the space.
00:35I don't know if it's gonna sound strange. It certainly won't to any person who is wild about their pets.
00:40I brought my dog to my friend's house. She has a house in the same area and I took my
00:45dog for a walk on the beach.
00:46I've never seen my dog so happy. So I actually really got the house for my dog. That's the truth.
00:51This Green River project table is made of the most beautiful wood.
00:55The scalloped edge which I think is an incredibly beautiful touch really evoking the water.
01:00Kind of bringing the beach into the house.
01:02This sofa also custom made for the space because as I said everything is so incredibly small here.
01:07There was no sofa on the market that I liked well enough to serve my Malibu getaway.
01:13This is beautiful fabric from Pat McGann which is gorgeous.
01:17I know I keep stressing how small the space is but I'm not kidding and all the lovely people in
01:21here who are helping to make this happen today can tell you there are several people behind the camera.
01:26Very small.
01:26To me it almost feels cozier that way and I'm not just saying it because it's what my space is
01:31but it actually feels like being in a little book nook or something with very very beautiful touches all over
01:37that just make everything feel really peaceful and lovely.
01:39So to me it's just about finding ways to unplug and anytime I'm near the water I really feel like
01:45that's easier.
01:52This is my kitchen.
01:53It is my favorite place to be probably in the house.
01:57Mostly because of how open and airy it is the ceiling is at its highest point in the kitchen and
02:01I have these transom windows at the top of the house which let in really gorgeous light.
02:06The reason I love this room so much is that it feels airy and open and light and because I'm
02:11obsessed with my countertops.
02:13Which Amy found these slabs and the minute I saw them I was just like they're green they're like sea
02:19foam green they're like what happens to the water when it laps up on the sand.
02:22I often feel that marble in the kitchen looks like bathroom marble to me and it's typically because it's the
02:29same kind of veining or the traditional kind of gray marble that you see often in bathrooms.
02:33And I thought this is the most beautiful marble I've ever seen with all of the green veining and up
02:40close I mean it really looks like there's cut emeralds in it.
02:43It's just gorgeous.
02:43I have two prized possessions in here that are that mean something to me which is my partner Holland Taylor
02:49got me this incredible piece of art called Perdito which I'm sure I'm saying wrong but it's by this incredible
02:56artist named Patrizia Iglesias.
02:57And I had actually purchased a piece of her art from the Nikki Kehoe store and it was a watercolor
03:03and Holland did not know that I had done that and for my birthday she got me this painting on
03:07linen that is just it's all animals which as I've made very clear are very important to me.
03:12And also I have this incredible original print by a photographer named Sam Shaw who was John Cassavetes on set
03:19photographer and so he was there the day they were shooting this scene from a woman under the influence with
03:25Jenna Rollins.
03:26And that is Cassavetes shooting Jenna in that scene and he's got a cigarette hanging out of his mouth and
03:32it just sort of encapsulates I think everything about the way they made movies and she obviously is an actress
03:36who means a great deal to me and it's just a very very meaningful piece that actually had in my
03:40other house
03:41and I brought here to Malibu to live in the kitchen.
03:44So all of the hardware here by Philip Cranji they have a kind of rope quality to them which again
03:49was like pulling in some of the nautical close to the ocean vibes which I really love all of my
03:54refrigerator freezer.
03:55I decided I wanted two of them because I knew the space was small but I know that I like
03:59to have a cocktail like part of what feels like fun about this place is having people over and taking
04:05walks on the beach and taking your drink with you.
04:07And so I knew I needed like plenty of space to put booze and also ice.
04:12I'm not a big cook so I was able to have the world's tiniest stove which also works with the
04:17space and I think is quite sweet but also is very representative and indicative of my actual lifestyle which is
04:22she doesn't cook.
04:24She doesn't cook at all.
04:24I was incredibly lucky that the person who built this property even though I changed all of the interior there
04:30was so much light and all these transom windows that you know throughout the day the light changes which I
04:34think is a really a really lovely thing to have in his face.
04:37So all of the sconces both in the bedroom and here in the kitchen these wicker brass gems are from
04:43a place called Soane which is in England and we waited a very long time for them which is often
04:48the case when you want to buy things from far away.
04:51The other light fixtures are all vintage finds that I think help the house feel truly what it is which
04:57is just like a little cozy homey place that I tried to make something that still felt like it was
05:03evoking my spirit but it's still a little spot on the beach.
05:07It's not fancy but it has some incredibly nuanced lovely things that make it feel like it's mine.
05:19Hey I don't know about you but I really like using a curtain for a door.
05:23That was our solve so that we did not have what traditionally happens in small spaces which is the dreaded
05:28barn door.
05:30I don't go for it. I don't like a I don't like the barn door.
05:33You know mazel tov to anyone who does it's not a judgment. It kind of is a judgment but it's
05:38fine.
05:38You can have your barn door but we came up with this idea of separating the space between the living
05:44room and the kitchen and the bedroom with this incredible curtain fabric from Amy Kehoe, Nikki Kehoe's store which is
05:50great.
05:51So it does a lot of this which is nice.
05:53Okay we are in my tiny tiny ship's cabin of a bedroom which is another theme that Amy and I
05:59talked about about making a space where every single thing served a very specific purpose.
06:04So it could be tight tidy and really really cozy like like a ship with an incredibly beautiful Nikki Kehoe
06:12string pendant that I've always coveted it and I wanted one in my other house and there was never really
06:17anywhere to put it.
06:18So basically we started with this pendant and everything sort of built out from there.
06:23Shin at Waka Waka made the base of my bed which is made this beautiful dusty rose color and again
06:29drawers on the bottom for storage because we were trying to make as much space as possible.
06:34Oh this wallpaper is extraordinary. I will tell you that the color of my house is sort of the background
06:40exterior color of this wallpaper which is Iterica Ghazzoni wallpaper.
06:44I like to call it aubergine. I think some people call it eggplant. You know tomato, tomato.
06:48Sometimes I like going hard with color and depth in a small space. I think the texture of it and
06:55everything just makes things feel kind of womb like and cozy which if you ask me that is a lovely
07:00feeling for a bedroom.
07:01I got this incredible cashmere blanket from Amy store Nikki Kehoe. I'm obviously very obsessed and possessed by my designer.
07:09I think she's a brilliant genius but this was at their store and it was the coziest most it just
07:14to me I was like oh is this too much pattern on pattern and then I thought I don't really
07:18care.
07:19It's the most divine cozy warm thing. The reason I'm talking about it is because I like to put my
07:24pets in cashmere as much as possible because they're very into it because they're not dumb.
07:29You know I don't have dumb dogs. So the main event really when I'm here is to cuddle in this
07:35bed with my blanket with all of my dogs in the bed and my television that is on this wall.
07:40It's a real Netflix and chill sort of story here.
07:48We are in my bathroom which is floor to ceiling tiled with beautiful zealot tile from clay tile which once
07:58I saw one of them I just went nuts and I said to Amy like would it be crazy if
08:02we just did the whole thing.
08:03Sealing the whole thing. I'm obsessed with it. I'm obsessed the way it looks textural and then it moves like
08:09sequins which are one of my favorite things on planet Earth is a sequin.
08:12I thought it should be as beautiful and inviting and gorgeous as possible which I think we have achieved.
08:19So in terms of finding sconces that we're going to kind of elevate the space but still kind of keep
08:24it what it should be which is a little tiny house.
08:27Amy found I think on first dibs these incredible Italian lavender colored like rock crystal sconces and as soon as
08:36she showed them to me I just went absolutely nuts for them and wanted to have them.
08:40And thought well even if it's too glamorous a sconce to have in a little beach house I want it
08:45anyway.
08:46And that is sort of the driving force I think in most choices that we made here which was like
08:51what's going to feel the most fun and what's going to feel luxurious but also just ultimately me.
08:57And again it's a lavender lilac color which is another watered down version of eggplant.
09:04So I obviously have a real problem with that's my favorite color what can I say you should always be
09:09surrounded by your favorite color.
09:10I do think it does something for your energy and for your mood and for your spirit.
09:18We are in my lovely charming exceedingly tiny backyard where I like to also do really annoying white girl on
09:26Instagram things like drink my tea out here.
09:30Okay so one of my favorite things about this house I do like to walk on the beach and I
09:34like to walk on the beach with no shoes on.
09:37So we have a great outdoor shower that Amy found that has a special little feature for the feet where
09:41you can just turn it on and get all that dirty sand off your feet because I really don't want
09:46all the sand on my beautiful wide plank Madeira floors.
09:49Call me crazy but I don't there I don't even think I got floors that are like good for water
09:54weather or wet feet but I didn't care.
09:57I did it anyway because they're so pretty.
10:00I work with this wonderful landscape architect named Sean Femwright.
10:04Some of this ivy was all here I got very lucky that there was so much green and I didn't
10:08have to do any of that but all of the plantings all of the pots Sean did and I just
10:13love him to pieces.
10:13And he took me to this incredible store called Merit that has all of these old vessels all of which
10:19are antique and paint chipping pottery chipping beautiful vessels to hold all of his really beautiful plants.
10:36Hey AD thank you so much for coming by.
10:40It has been a great time and now I would like you to get out of my house.
10:46Have a great day.
10:53What's up what's up what's up.
10:54AD how are you I'm Mrs. Dean.
10:57Mr. Dean right here.
10:58And we want to invite you into our home.
11:00Come.
11:01Coming to the za za za.
11:23You know the house is very open so we occupy all the spaces in the home but there is something
11:27about the circle that feels so good especially with the view and the view.
11:32which feels so calming and peaceful.
11:35This is the perfect way to welcome people in.
11:37It's comfortable.
11:38You want something that felt warm something that feels like places we traveled around the world and you know with
11:43this view and with these colors it just locks us into the universe.
11:47My love loves clean lines.
11:49He's really about just the everything feeling really clean.
11:53It's almost like it doesn't obstruct you as you're imagining dreaming thinking and I think that's something we do a
11:58lot here.
11:59We do a lot of dreaming.
12:00He's definitely a Virgo.
12:01But we do a lot of dreaming you know and so it doesn't it doesn't get in the way of
12:07whatever we could possibly you know imagine.
12:09Everything was curated.
12:11Everything was designed for the space.
12:12One of Wallace Cunningham's best works.
12:15Kids who love Iron Man they're like that's the Iron Man house.
12:18Listen not only kids.
12:20Grown-ups.
12:23I don't blame Tony Stocks and them using this as an example to fight the world.
12:28Exactly.
12:28Just to save the world right.
12:30We definitely are.
12:31To save the world.
12:31Right.
12:31We're saving the world from here too.
12:39So this is one of the favorite places in the house.
12:42The house is an open layout so you can really just experience it as an open space.
12:47But we love hanging out here.
12:49We love eating here.
12:50Playing games.
12:52She's the board game master.
12:53I love games.
12:54Yeah.
12:55We play cards.
12:55We play dice.
12:56We play board games.
12:58And then a lot of times we'll just casually eat at the counter in the kitchen.
13:02It's really kind of whatever's happening.
13:04If the lunch is going on we'll just gather around the counter and chill out.
13:07We love to cook.
13:08We love to just have our friends and family over.
13:11Always music playing.
13:12Always music playing.
13:14In fact that's how you know he's awake.
13:15If music's playing he's up.
13:18We love this set.
13:19It is so special.
13:20It feels somehow simple yet very luxurious at the same time.
13:25And it has a great amount of seats for entertaining and friends and family.
13:30This is a family home.
13:31We have our kids here.
13:32Our kids have their friends over.
13:34Everything like that.
13:34So we definitely feel like we can also still eat on these.
13:38Which is important.
13:39The dog definitely feels like he can drool on them.
13:42The amount of drool that I'm wiping up is kind of disrespectful.
13:46But we love you Samba.
13:47Oh no.
13:48He's a big dog.
13:48He can't help it.
13:49He's a big guy.
13:49Okay.
13:50Off to the family room.
13:52We go.
13:54Let's go.
13:55Let's go.
14:02So we're in the formal dining room.
14:04This is also the family room.
14:05That's what I love.
14:06It's a beautiful structure, but it's also quite casual too.
14:09You know, we mix the spaces together.
14:12You know, the formal dining room is in the family room.
14:14So we're watching TV in this room.
14:17We're playing loud movies.
14:19We're falling asleep on the couch.
14:20We're having, you know, holiday dinners, whatever the case is.
14:23This is a, you know, this is a beautiful space.
14:25Also, the view is beautiful.
14:27We can open the doors and dine outside as well.
14:29We can play.
14:30We can jump in the pool.
14:31It's a very open, open type of way, open living.
14:35Super fun room.
14:35We have our amazing Derrick Adams here, which is occupying the entire wall.
14:42And it's so beautiful because we get to see kind of the fun of swimming and having a good time.
14:47We know we're right on the water, so it fits into.
14:49It's like a family portrait of our family.
14:51Never really seen black people swimming in pools too much.
14:54So that piece was like real strong for the living room.
14:56So this is a really special room for us.
14:58I think it has a wide spectrum of art and life and experience in it.
15:03And it feels really good.
15:04We love that our kids are able to grow up seeing such dynamic art around them.
15:08Definitely.
15:08We have tastes and pieces of, you know, African art and different pieces all over the world that are a
15:15part of this room.
15:16I love that for it.
15:17It just feels like it's a mixture of a lot of different cultures.
15:23We do own the largest collection of Gordon Parks, and so we're very proud of that.
15:28This is such a special one.
15:30This one right here, this one spoke to a little.
15:31It's like to mix the photography, you know, and with the furniture, it just felt like the perfect mix to
15:37have in this room.
15:38And I love this Knit Cave.
15:39I actually think my favorite thing about the Knit Cave piece is just how it's so shockingly detailed and all
15:46of these amazing buttons.
15:47Shout to Joanna from Jack Shaman for hooking this up.
15:50Incredible.
15:51Incredible.
15:52I love technology, right?
15:54So the new B&O TV set is crazy with the sculptures and the living room.
15:59So the whole house sound is B&O.
16:02They might should pay me now.
16:04They definitely should.
16:05They might should pay us now.
16:06If they didn't.
16:07We spent a lot of money with you guys.
16:09We're coming for them now.
16:11And then Miss Jordan Hestale is so special.
16:14I just love how she's sitting in this room with us.
16:17Yes.
16:17It's like everybody's in the room with us.
16:19It's also thought provoking, and I think we love to do that with the art.
16:23Yes.
16:33So we love it up here.
16:34The bedrooms are up here.
16:36The kids rooms are up here.
16:38It's action packed over here.
16:39Action packed.
16:41Radcliffe Bailey.
16:42I love Radcliffe Bailey.
16:44I just something about this that's so, especially with the music notes behind it.
16:48I love how there's like the work inside the work, which is really awesome to see.
16:53And then these like gold panels, spray paint down there.
16:57And like you see the texture of his paint.
16:59There's mixed media exotic.
17:01So special.
17:03Love this one.
17:03Yeah.
17:04I guess we call this the library.
17:05We call it the piano room.
17:07Egypt practices piano here.
17:09I practice piano here.
17:10We definitely, you know, kind of relax, lounge, read, chill.
17:16You can watch over.
17:16A lot of times he's just kind of hanging out here thinking.
17:19But it's about keeping the warm and warm colors because, you know, this house is, you
17:24know, the Iron Man house.
17:26So that means that it's, you know, it's kind of industrial in a way.
17:30It can be kind of cold.
17:32And we wanted to just warm it up and bring the energies with the rugs and the different
17:36tones that we purposely picked to just make it feel like a home and not only a sculpture,
17:41but bring, marry them both together.
17:43So we love that it's a nod to a lot of different ancient cultures.
17:48That was a point.
17:49One time we were talking about this mixture between kind of, you know, the feeling of
17:53Bali and the way that it feels so comfortable and open and beautiful.
17:57And also.
17:59Yeah, but it's a mixture of everything.
18:00It is.
18:00I mean, because even like these ceramics over here is Julia Chang.
18:04They're beautiful.
18:05Yeah.
18:05It's super strong.
18:06Beautiful.
18:07You know, even this amazing book on Alula, you know, everything.
18:10I mean, this Gordon Park sets and Henry Taylor books and just a mixture of everything.
18:15You know, some vintage books up there as well.
18:17If I'm playing, sometimes people will hang out.
18:19If I'm practicing with Egypt, you know, his brother will be here chilling.
18:23I get free concerts every day.
18:25Right.
18:25I'm telling you, my season ticket pass is unbelievable.
18:30I get, you know, Egypt opens up.
18:33She's the headliner.
18:34I just sit right here and just kicking it.
18:36I'm telling you, the best show on earth.
18:38That's good.
18:38This piano is a very important piano, actually.
18:42This piano is my very first piano ever.
18:47So my son gets to play on my first piano when I first was, you know, signed to Columbia Records.
18:56This was the piano that they gave me.
18:59And at the time I thought that, I mean, it might as well have been $20 million.
19:05I felt so excited.
19:07I didn't have anything that looked like this ever before.
19:10I've always kept it.
19:11It's always been with us.
19:12And now that Egypt plays on his piano, it's like, it's pretty amazing.
19:17So this is special.
19:18I'm not going to lie.
19:20I used to diss this piano because I'm like, babe, like, you know, they got pianos now.
19:24Like, you know, we could do something custom.
19:26We could do something amazing.
19:27Then when she told me the story, I had to be like.
19:29It's special.
19:30Keep it special.
19:32Like 16 years old.
19:33That's from when he was a kid.
19:35We had to put the stickers on the notes and so that he can remember where to play stuff.
19:40So.
19:42Now.
19:47Can't play without the pedal.
19:50You know?
19:57Yeah, I think it's very cool.
19:58What's the same arm here?
20:01I can't wait.
20:01You know?
20:02You know?
20:03It's very cool.
20:05All right.
20:06You know.
20:06You can't wait, man.
20:07You know?
20:08You know?
20:10I can't wait until this.
20:12You can wait until this time.
20:14It's a little bit too easy.
20:32I'm trying to tell you, that's that front row seat back there, I'm trying to tell you.
20:36There it is, kind of my shirt.
20:39That was good.
20:40Thanks.
20:53Cheers.
20:54Cheers.
20:54Thanks for coming through, A.D., we love having you.
20:57But you gotta go home.
20:59I mean, they probably don't want to go home, but this time, you can come back again.
21:03We'll see you next time.
21:05Sorry, sorry, sorry.
21:13Hey, A.D., I'm Ellen Pompeo.
21:15Welcome to my house at the beach.
21:33So I worked on this house together with my longtime friend and interior design partner in crime, Martin Lawrence Bullard.
21:40We get into lots of trouble together and have a load of fun.
21:43When I first bought this house, he found this original Desaides sofa from the 60s, which is very unusual patchwork
21:49leather.
21:50And we sort of built all of our inspiration around this sofa.
21:55And then the walls.
21:57I think the bookmatched marble is really striking.
22:00It's so dramatic.
22:01And it sets the perfect tone for everything.
22:04And it really is art in itself.
22:06So the bar cart is fantastic.
22:08That's one of the favorite things in the house.
22:10It's just so period and so cool.
22:12It really gives that mid-century vibe.
22:14And, you know, tequila is a favorite here.
22:16We love tequila in all forms.
22:18With not a lot of sugar in it.
22:20We just like the tequila and just some plain lime juice.
22:23You know.
22:27Okay, so this is like the main dining area for the kids.
22:31This is where they sit.
22:33And these chairs are Swedish from the 60s.
22:35And this table was actually in Yves Saint Laurent's studio.
22:39It was a cutting table.
22:41And the plant on the table is called a seaweed cactus.
22:44I think it's so fantastic.
22:46And I love the deep green.
22:47The kids have a lot of fun at this table throwing food at each other.
22:50And then I scream at them from over there.
22:58Okay, so I cook a lot.
23:01So I have a lot of rules regarding this kitchen.
23:03This kitchen is very small.
23:04I don't like anybody in the kitchen when I'm in here.
23:07So everybody has to stand behind this line.
23:10There are three stools that I've been nice enough to put here for the children.
23:13They each have their own stool.
23:15And nobody is to come around into the kitchen.
23:18If they want something, they're supposed to stand there or sit there and ask me for it.
23:24This is my space.
23:26So again, we have the same Brazilian bookmatch marble,
23:29which if you notice, the design sort of comes together even though the walls are separated.
23:34The pattern flows in a way that is really beautiful.
23:37And it really sort of reminds you of the waves of the ocean.
23:40You can't help but just sit and stare at the ocean all day when you're here.
23:43So the apothecary jars Martin found at the Parisian flea market, which I absolutely love.
23:49And in Los Angeles, because the ground moves, those are tacked down with some sticky tape to make sure that
23:56if the house shakes, those don't fall off and hit anybody in the head.
24:03So obviously, this is the formal dining room in this house.
24:07And sometimes when we have a lot of people over, the kids all sit at that table.
24:10And the adults will sit at this table.
24:13It's big enough for so many people.
24:15The view is incredible.
24:16I wake up and have my coffee here in the morning.
24:19And Martin custom-made this table.
24:21The middle moves.
24:23It's a lazy Susan, so it's great because all these people can sit around the table.
24:27The chandelier is a modern piece, but obviously the vibe is very 60s.
24:31And I think what's, you know, nice about it is it's kind of light, but it mimics the shape of
24:37the table.
24:38And it feels like it goes with the table, but it doesn't obscure the view at all.
24:46Okay, so we are in the primary bedroom.
24:49And there's a couple of things about this room that are worth mentioning.
24:53The marble you see behind us was inspired by this amazing art movie called I Am Love.
24:59And so this is sort of an homage to that.
25:01My husband wanted a custom-made bed so that all the kids, we could all sleep in here together on
25:06the weekends.
25:07So the bed is extra big, and this is where we watch movies.
25:11And we light a fire and lay in bed, all of us, and fight over which movie to watch.
25:21So this is the primary bathroom.
25:24We spend a lot of time in here, me and my daughters.
25:26And we just try to sit around and relax.
25:28The chairs are William Joule.
25:30Again, just a nice little sitting area.
25:32And it's just a nice, quiet space.
25:34You try to get some calm and peace and teach the children the importance of taking some time for yourself.
25:41Full disclosure, marble baths don't retain heat so well.
25:45I don't really recommend it.
25:46It looks very cool, but the water doesn't stay warm for long.
25:50And I loved this bench.
25:51It's all made out of terry cloth.
25:53So you can sit here wet, and it's kind of like a big towel.
26:03So we are outside.
26:06We're in the back of the house on the bluff at the ocean.
26:09And this is all original to the house.
26:11It's freezing in Malibu at nighttime.
26:14So to have a fire pit out here is really nice.
26:17The kids definitely make s'mores on the fire, for sure.
26:20And this is, again, the best place to either have coffee in the morning or a drink at night.
26:26You could just sit out here for hours.
26:28This tree, it's a yucca tree.
26:29And I just think it's so sculptural and gorgeous.
26:32And so when we chose the color for the sofas, that was really our inspiration.
26:37One of my biggest struggles as a mother is, like, getting the kids away from the TV and away from
26:41the iPads, right?
26:42So sometimes I just banish them to those chairs and I make them sit there and watch the ocean and
26:49tell me what you see.
26:59This is the kids' bedroom.
27:00I knew that I love purple, obviously, and we knew we were going with color for this house.
27:06But this wallpaper, this David Hicks-inspired grass cloth is quite graphic and cool.
27:12And so we started with that.
27:14Ceiling is, like, a nice place to add a little vibe, you know?
27:18It really does change everything, and then everything else can be clean and simple.
27:22Martin and I made these bean bags.
27:25They're from Missoni fabric.
27:26I love them and I'm a big fan.
27:28I do a little touch of Missoni all the time with everything.
27:32It's so fun and colorful.
27:34This backgammon table is one of my favorite things.
27:36It's fantastic and we're big backgammon players and we're teaching the kids.
27:40So we've put it in here to inspire the kids to learn how to play backgammon.
27:45So the bunk beds allow the kids to have friends over and they can see each other through the windows.
27:49They can stay up all night and talk to each other.
27:52Hopefully they stay up all night so they sleep in the morning and don't wake me up.
27:55And these stairs have drawers in them, so it's important to have places to hide all the stuff.
28:04So this is another guest room and what's special about this room is all the photography.
28:10So these are all very important moments in black history.
28:13Diana Ross outside Motown.
28:15The Martin Luther King, obviously I have a dream here.
28:18This is Grace Jones being painted on by Keith Haring.
28:21And then this is the Supremes, I think the night they won their Grammy or one of their Grammys.
28:27I don't know how many Grammys they have.
28:28The tables are 50s, Gioponte 50s.
28:32And then we also have some amazing Herb Ritz photography here.
28:36Obviously my children are black and it's really important for me to have lots of representation in the artwork.
28:42Usually I really make an effort to have it be predominantly black artists or have the subjects of it be
28:47black people
28:48who have made such an impact on our history here in the United States.
29:02So we're at the pool right now.
29:04And in California we really keep shallow pools because we have to be conscious.
29:09And the pool is the perfect place to hang out in this California heat, even though it's not that hot
29:13today.
29:14Typically this house is not very peaceful.
29:17When you have a beach house a lot of people want to come and visit.
29:19And so this place we always have the music blasting and there's always so many kids running around and playing
29:26in the pool.
29:27My husband usually stays behind that bar and makes pina coladas and margaritas for everyone.
29:33It's a really fun space.
29:34The house was built by Buff and Hensman, which are quite well known architects here in California.
29:39And the house had to be completely rebuilt because of the damage that the sea and the salt air does.
29:45So I took the house completely to the studs and redid it.
29:48And the biggest change I think I made was it was not all walls of glass before.
29:53And I replaced all the existing walls with glass.
30:01So this is the guest house and Martin and I started this room with the wallpaper.
30:05The wallpaper was something we fell in love with and we built the whole room around that.
30:10It's funny, you know, you can't really see it, but there's a blue sort of a teal color behind the
30:16green palm trees.
30:18And so I really wanted to accent that blue because it's such a gorgeous color, that teal.
30:22And so we chose to lacquer the closet doors and the teal and make the grass cloth wallpaper teal.
30:29What's interesting about this house is it's mid-century modern, right?
30:34So there's a lot of glass, there's a lot of cement, a lot of marble, which is all really hard.
30:39So it definitely needs something to soften it.
30:41So I think all the warm textures, the wicker, the wood of the house, and you need that natural element
30:48to soften it.
30:49And I always make sure I have flowers and a candle and there's a little espresso machine down there under
30:54the nightstand.
30:55So that everybody feels at home and casual when they're staying here.
31:12Okay, A.D., that was fun. You gotta go now.
31:14Bye!
31:16Go and have a tequila.
31:22Hey, A.D., it's Tommy and Dee.
31:24Welcome to Palm Beach. Come on in.
31:33This is our outdoor courtyard.
31:36And I absolutely fell in love with the house when I walked in and I saw this courtyard.
31:41All the coral stone and the beautiful arches.
31:44And as you can see, we have an outdoor fireplace.
31:46We decorated out here with a lot of blue and white.
31:49Blue is my favorite color.
31:51And mine too.
31:52And also Tommy's.
31:53And our decorator and friend, Martin Lawrence Boulard, also likes blue.
31:58So we loved these pops of blue accents outdoors with all the green.
32:03And a lot of the foliage was already here, thankfully.
32:07So we really did not have to add anything.
32:10It needed some TLC.
32:11It needed to be cared for.
32:13We gave it some love.
32:14And now with the weather and a little bit of a few showers here and there, it blossoms.
32:20That's one of the things that really drew me to this house was all the indoor outdoor spaces.
32:24And we do spend a lot of time outdoors.
32:26I like living on the water.
32:27We have a dock.
32:28We have jet skis.
32:29It's a whole different type of lifestyle, especially coming from New York and the Northeast.
32:40We're in the living room designed by Martin Lawrence Boulard, who created objects like the table, his fabrics.
32:48All the coral stone and this fireplace was all part of the house.
32:53We thought it was just so beautiful.
32:55One of the fun pieces that we brought from another house was this piece above the fireplace.
33:02And I would say that is my daily affirmation every morning.
33:07The pecky cypress on the ceiling was original to the home,
33:11but we decided to lighten it up just to give the house a fresher, more modern feeling.
33:15It was pretty dark and heavy, so we wanted to lighten it with the walls.
33:19It still has a bohemian vibe, but it's modern and clean.
33:24The light fixtures are actually like pieces of art.
33:28Tommy and I have loved collecting art for a very long time, so these light fixtures were not here when
33:33we moved in.
33:34They are Giacometti and part of our love and adoration for art in the 21st century.
33:41This area right here serves us as our, sometimes it's our family office, sometimes it's our cocktail area.
33:51I'd say it's all purpose. We've...
33:53It's pretty cozy.
33:54It's pretty cozy here.
33:55We like the coziness of it, but I like sitting here looking out at the water.
33:59This table, it is black lacquer with faux ivory inlay, and it is a piece that was inspired by a
34:08Spanish castle, I believe.
34:10It's a modern classic again, but it has a bit of a deco vibe. If you look at the feet,
34:15we love the fact that it's modern and classic.
34:22I really love this room. It has a very sort of Moroccan vibe. We have these beautiful Syrian tables here
34:30and all these fabrics.
34:31I love the mix of the fabrics and the colors. These were all fabrics from Martin Lawrence Boulard.
34:37I find this room just warm and welcoming, and I feel like today comfort is true luxury.
34:45We feel very, very blessed and lucky to be able to enjoy such a gorgeous spot.
34:50But I love the touches of khaki and olive green piping. It's a little safari-esque in my mind, and
34:56I love the French rope work on the stools.
35:00But again, it's the mix of Syrian-Moroccan, French. It really is a mix of modern and classic, modern, vintage.
35:09I would say inspiration from different parts of the world. And we are detail-obsessed, so we're continually looking at
35:17ways to improve our homes through detail.
35:25This is the dining room. And what is really beautiful, I think, is that we have open space between our
35:33dining room and living areas separated by these beautiful coral stone columns.
35:37And again, we did it light, modern, simple, with a few collected pieces.
35:44I like the touches of bamboo also because it reminds me of being in the tropics and being able to
35:50live the indoor-outdoor lifestyle with a lot of plants.
35:53The chairs are vintage 1940. The wood on the chairs and the table is bleached French oak. Again, light and
36:02bright.
36:03Again, I'd say that this is used duly as a dining room and an office.
36:10This is our dining-slash-conference room. So if we have meetings, we actually sit here.
36:21This is our foyer, which is really the link between all the rooms in the house.
36:27We have the outdoors here to the left. We have the dining room to our right, our living room, and
36:32everyone has to cross here at some point.
36:35I love that it's open and airy, and these beautiful coral stone columns are such a gorgeous detail.
36:42We had all these light fixtures that were custom-made for us in Spain.
36:46And if you follow through here, you can see that the stone leads upstairs to the landing where we have
36:55those beautiful arched windows.
36:57And it was quite dark, as Tommy said before when we bought it, and it was quite, I would say,
37:03over-furnished.
37:04And when we took out all of that and painted everything light-colored, I feel like all those beautiful details
37:10of the home actually came out more.
37:12Living with this stone is, for me, very traditional because it's very Mediterranean.
37:19But I'm obsessed with the columns and the detail.
37:28So this is a gallery or hallway leading to other bedrooms, also leading to the outdoor courtyard.
37:36And this collection of photographs was originally in the dining bar room of the Raleigh Hotel in Miami, which we
37:46owned for a while.
37:48There's some good ones.
37:49All sorts of different characters.
37:50Yeah, there's some really good ones. It's fun.
37:52From Andy Warhol to Jackie Kennedy to Karl Lagerfeld, a lot of very, I would say, iconic photographs.
38:06This is our indoor family room. There are TVs behind the wooden cabinets over there.
38:13I love this room. It's a really cozy, warm, inviting room, and I love all the books.
38:19And we've been known to watch a few football games in here.
38:27This is our kitchen, which we decided to paint white.
38:32Previously, this kitchen was all dark wood, very dark wood, like a dark cherry wood.
38:38It was dark brown.
38:39Dark brown.
38:40And the countertops were butterscotch.
38:42We decided to make everything light and clean. We pulled up the countertops and replaced the marble. But other than
38:52that, we really did not do that much in this kitchen.
38:56It's incredible what one can do with a can of white paint.
38:59And we changed the fixtures because they were like a bronzy gold, and we thought nickel would be much more
39:06appealing and much more modern.
39:08Just white paint and new fixtures.
39:10Some tweaks.
39:10Little tweaks.
39:11Little tweaks.
39:11This is a great space because this is super convenient because the grill is just out here around the corner.
39:19So it's literally backed up against a kitchen, so you barely have to even move to go grill.
39:25And we use it a lot.
39:30So we move from the kitchen into sort of the sitting eating area.
39:35And I love that these arches sort of separate the area, but again, we're separated but open.
39:42And blue and white. We love blue and white.
39:44And so...
39:45We like blue and white, too.
39:47And we have this little bar area, which is kind of convenient for when my son is eating cereal in
39:54the morning or just to hang out.
39:55And I absolutely love this room. It's so cozy. Again, fireplaces. I love my fireplaces.
40:03We like the mix of bamboo with the wicker, with the seroosed wood.
40:08When we have a family meal, either lunches or I would say casual dinners, we eat here and use the
40:18Lazy Susan.
40:24So we have many outdoor spaces in this home and many outdoor terraces.
40:29This is our upstairs terrace.
40:31And this is probably one of my favorites because, again, we have this gorgeous fireplace, which I love to put
40:38it on in the evening.
40:39And we sometimes lie out here on this day bed and have cocktails or just relax.
40:46It's right off my principal bath.
40:48And I love the Spanish tiles on the floor.
40:51And I love the quadrifoils that are along the banister here.
40:55It also has just a stunning view out here.
40:59And at nighttime, the sun sets right over there.
41:02And when the lights come on, it's just really, really stunning.
41:12Okay, so now I'm going to take you in my absolute favorite, favorite part of the house.
41:17This is what I call our outdoor family room.
41:21And we spend most of our time out here.
41:25When we can sit out here, look at the water, have a cocktail, have friends over and basically dream about
41:32being on vacation.
41:33Because it seems like we're on vacation when we're out here.
41:36At night, the buildings twinkle.
41:39The sunset is right here every night at 5.30, 6 o'clock.
41:44But it's comfortable and relaxing.
41:47That's the main thing.
41:48My son and I took the jet skis up about a mile from here.
41:52And we saw manatees.
41:54And they have like a migration of manatees.
41:57And fortunately, there are police boats around slowing other boats and jet skis.
42:03Actually, I do think that there are a lot more things in that water besides the manatees.
42:09We see things jumping out of the water all the time.
42:12Yeah, there is a lot more than the manatees.
42:14I think there's some more nefarious creatures.
42:17Sometimes we see a fin.
42:20Actually, this is what the original ceilings looked like throughout the home.
42:24They were this color.
42:25We thought outdoors this would be good to leave the way it was.
42:29Yeah.
42:30This is our really best place to have a cocktail at around 5 o'clock and enjoy.
42:36Sometimes 4.30 and enjoy the sunset.
42:46This is our pool area.
42:48This was all grass all the way around.
42:50So we decided to put the coral stone down to give ourselves sort of a walkway and a patio.
42:57All the outdoor lighting was here.
43:00And they're all Spanish-inspired, which I think works perfectly with the home because the home is a very Spanish
43:07-style Mediterranean.
43:08And so we were lucky that we did not have to go find these.
43:11I actually really love all of the outdoor light fixtures.
43:15And it's really like a beautiful, magical, romantic setting.
43:19Have you swam in this pool yet?
43:21I haven't.
43:23I swam in it one time, right?
43:25Our son swims in it just about every day.
43:28Yeah.
43:28I think you need to get in.
43:30Uh, I like to, uh, be on top of the water. Jet skiing or boating.
43:43Hey, A.D., thanks for stopping by. Sorry, but we've got to go right now.
43:48Want to go paddle boarding?
43:49Let's do it.
43:49We're going paddle boarding. Thank you.
43:59Hi, it's Naomi Campbell.
44:01And welcome to my home.
44:04Follow me.
44:17So we are in Melindi, Kenya.
44:19I came to Melindi in 1994 for the very first time, and then fell in love with Melindi in 1999.
44:27Everything is under a Makuti roof, so everything is open.
44:30So we will call this area the living room.
44:33And so what we do here is mostly we gather here before dinner, and we just talk, and we also
44:40gather here after dinner.
44:42Most of the furniture is workmanship that's been done here in Kenya, so we keep it local.
44:47This table is one piece, also done here in Kenya.
44:51This is a chandelier that we got in 2000.
44:55It has that Moroccan-Egyptian vibe.
44:58And we have to give props to the two ladies, which is Carol Beckwith and Angela Fisher, who has been
45:05championing Africa and Kenya for so long.
45:08So these two ladies, for me, are my heroes of the whole region because they've just done and always loved
45:15and just shown the beauty of Kenya.
45:18This is one of four pools.
45:19This is the coldest pool in the house.
45:22It's because it can get very hot here.
45:24So this is the cold pool.
45:25We put dinner tables here, depending on how many people.
45:28We can have three or four different tables, but you just need one big oval table here.
45:32And at nighttime, it's all set up with lanterns.
45:35It's all candle lights.
45:36It's very sweet.
45:37And what I love about being here is that you're really living outside.
45:42You know, even if you're covered, it's still open.
45:46You know what I mean?
45:46So you still get the natural air and the breeze and just part of the whole landscape.
45:52Green.
45:52And I feel like this is what people want right now is just to be outside all the time.
45:57And beautiful climate, of course.
46:01This used to be one of my rooms.
46:03Do you want to see?
46:04I love this room.
46:06It's got a great energy.
46:07Oh, the ceilings, it's all gotten wooden beams.
46:11That's what we wanted because it's just, I think wood is so grounding.
46:15I love the wood that goes around.
46:19I just love this room.
46:20It's just chilled.
46:21We have air conditioning.
46:23I don't personally sleep in air conditioning.
46:25I don't like it.
46:26It gives wrinkles, I believe.
46:27So we have these nets.
46:29And I love this old fashioned net.
46:31I love it.
46:32I always love when I go to hotels and they have it.
46:34I mean, of course we have mosquitoes here.
46:37We want you to feel where you are.
46:39I wouldn't want to have a place that's like takes away from the feeling.
46:42We have the best of both because we're on the beach.
46:44We have it a little more modern, but here it is authentic Kenyan African art, artifacts.
46:50So I'm going to take you upstairs.
46:54So upstairs is like just a chill area.
46:57So you can have a lot of people staying with you and you just never feel like it is because
47:01everyone just does their own thing and has their own little corners that they like.
47:04I used to love to come up here to read.
47:06So this is our gaming area.
47:08We used to play cards up here a lot too.
47:10Again, we have a lot of this African textiles and artifactures, which I love all this stuff.
47:16Love.
47:21Here I love to come.
47:22Sometimes I would do yoga here because I just like overlooking property.
47:27It's quite sunny here.
47:28Shall we go down?
47:35This is breakfast area.
47:38Buffet comes here and everyone just eats.
47:43This area has always been a buffet area.
47:45Once again, we're under a Makuti roof.
47:48This table is also done here.
47:50It's one piece.
47:51This is a table when we do like buffet lunch.
47:53Everything's laid out on this table and everyone just comes and eats.
47:57This is our local artist Armando Tanzini, who I would love for you to meet.
48:03But what I love about Armando is he also has a school where he teaches the local artists and mentors
48:10them.
48:10And I love that.
48:12I don't know, people have such like the wrong perception of Africa.
48:16It's a beautiful place.
48:18This is definitely my go-to place of like chilling, relaxing, like completely shutting down.
48:25This is the place where I shut down.
48:27Kenya is just like a natural gem.
48:30It has the safari, it has the bush, it has the coast, it has the dunes.
48:35It has all the elements.
48:37And people don't realize that.
48:39I'm like, what are you talking about?
48:40I'm on the Indian Ocean.
48:41Love the Atlantic, but Indians better.
48:47This is the main pool area where everyone gets sun.
48:50I wouldn't say this is a Jacuzzi because you don't want heat in Kenya.
48:54But this is kind of like just a smaller pool with a little fountain that you can just sit and
49:00chill and have a mocktail in my case.
49:03And relax.
49:05Okay, here we go.
49:10So this is another area, we call it new houses, which has four rooms each and a kitchenette.
49:17What I love about Kenya is you've got bougainville growing wild everywhere and I love bougainvilles.
49:23Come on in.
49:23Each room has its own little twist.
49:25None of the rooms are identically the same.
49:27Basically, it's just nice.
49:28Everyone has their own area.
49:30They can do what they want.
49:31It can be very independent here.
49:33You can be together and then you can have your alone time and nobody bothers anyone.
49:37That's what I like about it.
49:39I love these.
49:40I just love these.
49:41These are my favorites.
49:43My favorites.
49:43My favorites.
49:44The first time I heard about Kenya was from my mother's elder sister, my Auntie June.
49:49And then the second time I heard about Kenya was from Lauren Hutton who always said to me when she
49:56would go to Kenya to revitalize after working.
49:59I mean, Lauren Hutton, it's Lauren Hutton, legendary.
50:03She always said I would come back with a real smile.
50:06And I remember the first time I was coming to Kenya and I said to Lauren, I'm going to Kenya.
50:10She said to me, look at your smile when you get back from Kenya.
50:13You're going to have a real smile.
50:15And I so understood what she meant.
50:18She's 100% right.
50:22Taking you to the spa.
50:23We like Henry Cheneaux's spas and technique.
50:25So Flavio is friends with Henry Cheneaux.
50:27So he thought it would be great to have Henry Cheneaux put in a little spa in the house.
50:32So this is the spa.
50:38This is the room where we do one of the Cheneaux techniques.
50:41This is hydrotherapy.
50:43You get in like the bath for like 30 minutes.
50:46And then after they wrap you with mud, they cover you with mud and they sink you in this one.
50:51And you sink down, down, down, down.
50:53But your skin, good detox.
50:56It's about detoxing, cleaning out all the toxins.
50:59And that's what you want to do when you go away and chill.
51:02I recommend all my friends when they come here and all my guests to do this on the first day.
51:07So that they have the best sleep ever the first night.
51:12So I've never showed you my room.
51:14That's the only place I haven't showed you is my room.
51:16Come.
51:18This is my room.
51:20Come in.
51:20So it's my little living area.
51:23This is my bed area.
51:26And I love this picture.
51:28I love this little boy.
51:30I think he's gorgeous.
51:31I love his face.
51:32I love his eyes.
51:33I love everything about him.
51:34It's like you can reach out and touch him.
51:36This is a great picture.
51:39The lion, I mean, the lion is it.
51:42The lion and the panthers.
51:43I love panthers too.
51:45That's a piece from Armando.
51:48I mean, even my door.
51:49Everything is done here.
51:51Everything is done here.
51:53The headboards.
51:55Everything is done in Kenya.
51:57They're so good at woodwork.
52:01So besides the pool, we also have the beach across the street.
52:04Just a chilled area on the Indian Ocean.
52:06It's just really, it's beautiful.
52:08It's a little paradise.
52:09You love that Maldivian water?
52:11We have it here.
52:13That transparent blue right here.
52:25So we are back to where we started.
52:28Thank you so much, A.D., for coming and joining me
52:31for a little trip around my home here in Melindi, Kenya.
52:35And I hope you enjoyed it.
52:37And I hope that you will all now look at Kenya with different eyes
52:42and come here and enjoy the gorgeous nature that it gives.
52:47Thank you so much.
52:48Brown Girl out.
52:54The African continent is where it's at.
52:56Watch.
52:58Been saying it for a long time, but you see.
53:01It's a good day.
53:02Amen.
