Transcript
00:00Hi!
00:00Hi!
00:01How are you?
00:02Pandora!
00:03Pandora!
00:04What you need to do is get control of Pandora.
00:07If dogs go wild...
00:10They are absolutely nuts.
00:12Is the dog around?
00:15I can't control them.
00:17Come on now, big boy.
00:18Nathan thinks he can read.
00:20Surely he can.
00:20He can't.
00:21He's a dog.
00:22And get up.
00:23Oh, here we go.
00:24No, get down.
00:25To no good.
00:26It's always me now, is it?
00:28I'm honoured.
00:28Or down.
00:29Oh, no.
00:31And dirty.
00:32He loves a big, large crap.
00:36Tank likes to rub his boy parts.
00:39What is going on with you, Tank?
00:41When pups...
00:42I wonder what we're going to learn today.
00:44...need to be schooled.
00:46Three, two, one.
00:47That's it.
00:48Fantastic.
00:49Look at that.
00:50Or if your pooch...
00:52He's dropped one.
00:53He got a whiff.
00:54...has a personal problem.
00:55Some dogs have bacterias that are gas-producing.
00:59Just in case.
01:01One man...
01:02Hey, look at that.
01:04...will give it his all.
01:06Jack!
01:06Oi!
01:07Leave it.
01:08And get answers...
01:09I think I might know what's going on, and it's not what you think.
01:12...to any doggy dilemma.
01:15Yeah, that's next level, innit?
01:20This week, a six-pack...
01:24She loves the dog so much.
01:26Back up!
01:27...shredding a grandma's home life.
01:30That's such a hazard to her.
01:33...and frazzling a first-time mum.
01:36It's just unbearable every time the door goes.
01:39Oi!
01:39That's exactly what I mean.
01:41Oi!
01:41Stop it!
01:42A couple looking for love and affection...
01:45And there, I go through his bottom.
01:47Ooh!
01:48It's a marvel.
01:49Yeah!
01:50...get a bum deal.
01:51Well, he really don't like that, does he?
01:54And so does Graham.
01:56This is really good for helping to settle the stomach.
01:59...in his quest for healthy poos.
02:02And take water out of the stool.
02:09First up, Graham's in the south-east.
02:12Well, I'm in the Essex countryside today.
02:14Very tranquil.
02:16Answering an SOS call...
02:18I'm off to see a young mum.
02:20...from three generations of the same family.
02:23She's got a four-month-old baby,
02:25and the dogs, by all accounts, are causing chaos in the house.
02:34Recent months have been a rollercoaster for new parents Alex and Joel,
02:39whose baby Savannah arrived alongside moving house.
02:44We've recently moved into my parents' house to help my father with...
02:48..with my mother, who has Parkinson's, has done for 16 years now.
02:52Hello, babe.
02:53She's quite advanced,
02:55and we're not too sure how much longer we're going to have left with her,
02:58but we also have a four-month-old baby,
03:02and it's a fantastic time for mum
03:05to spend some quality time with her, with her grandchild.
03:09Dog lovers Diane and Michael
03:11were used to living with their own four furry housemates.
03:15But since their son moved his in,
03:18the new grandparents are cohabiting not with four, but six.
03:23We've got four generations of Crocker Spaniels.
03:25So we've got the great-grandma Tess,
03:28the grandma Honey, the mum Ruby,
03:31and then the baby Two Shoes.
03:34And we've got a Jackador Arrow and Nigel over here.
03:41Is this your mummy?
03:42The dream was for the family to live under one roof
03:46and support each other.
03:47But that comforting idea is shattered.
03:54Every time the doorbell rings.
03:58They are absolutely nuts when it comes to barking.
04:04They bark at anyone trying to come in.
04:07This is exactly what I mean.
04:09Oi! Stop it! Back!
04:11The noise is upsetting enough...
04:14Sorry!
04:15Dogs in!
04:16Get in!
04:18But the constant risk...
04:20Back up!
04:21Back up!
04:22..of the dogs tripping Diane over...
04:26..is a real and present danger.
04:29Back up!
04:31Mum, with her condition,
04:32where she can't move her feet
04:34to stabilise herself quick enough,
04:36she can fall over on her own,
04:37let alone with having six dogs
04:39getting in between her feet,
04:40tripping her up.
04:44It's just so upsetting to see, like,
04:47because she loves the dogs so much,
04:48but they're such a hazard to her.
04:52We're torn because what can we do?
04:54We take them away.
04:55It's like taking away, like,
04:56one of the last bits of happiness that she has.
05:00It comes down to,
05:01do we put up with the pain of losing them?
05:03And that is literally where we're at with it.
05:05It's not just putting up with the pain, though, is it?
05:07It's also putting up with the risk to your health, Mum.
05:10When they get really excited,
05:11they get under your feet,
05:12they jump up at you.
05:13You can't...
05:14You can't get rid of...
05:16No, we're...
05:16We're not losing them.
05:18If we can't find a solution to this,
05:20it would break Mum's heart, wouldn't it?
05:22It would break all of us.
05:23It would, yeah.
05:26With so much at stake...
05:32There's a real pressure on Graham.
05:37Oh, blimey.
05:40Get down.
05:41Hi, Ed.
05:42They're all right.
05:42Hello, hi.
05:43Nice to meet you.
05:45Chats, come in.
05:46Yeah, thank you.
05:47How many are there?
05:48There's six.
05:51Come on in, Graham.
05:53Cheers.
05:53Yeah, take a seat.
05:54All right.
05:56Hello, you two.
05:57You beat us to it.
05:59I've got to ask the question.
06:00Why six dogs?
06:01Only two of them are mine and my partner's.
06:03OK.
06:04We've had to move in with his parents,
06:06because my partner's mum has Parkinson's.
06:08She's had it for about 17 years or so.
06:09They already had four dogs, four Cocker Spaniel, so now we've got a pack of six.
06:14Oh, blimey.
06:16Yeah.
06:17You've got your work cut out, haven't you?
06:18Before long, Graham sees for himself how tough life is.
06:24Oi, stop it.
06:26Around the six pack.
06:28Oh, it's mayhem, isn't it?
06:29Absolute mayhem.
06:30Thank you so much, sorry.
06:32Arrow one.
06:32Up.
06:33Down.
06:34Dog.
06:34In.
06:35In.
06:36Oh, my word.
06:37How do you live with this with a baby?
06:39Oh, my word.
06:42Oh, my baby.
06:43Oh, my God.
06:44Parcel.
06:45Yeah.
06:46Thought so.
06:46Yeah, I'd like to get my parcel, so unfortunately, this happens all the time.
06:51Blimey.
06:52It's just unbearable every time the door goes.
06:55Oh, dear.
06:56Oh, baby.
06:57Sorry, I'm going to have to go sort her out.
06:59Yeah, of course.
06:59Yeah, no problem at all.
07:00Yeah.
07:01Bless.
07:03While Alex tries to settle baby Savannah...
07:07Get back.
07:08Graham wants to know how this extended dog family...
07:12Get back.
07:13Go.
07:13Blimey.
07:14...affect granny and grandpa.
07:17Hello, Graham.
07:18Hello.
07:18Hi.
07:18Nice to meet you.
07:19I'm Michael.
07:21This is Diane.
07:22Nice to meet you.
07:23Hi, Diane.
07:24Hi, Diane.
07:25You all right?
07:25After you.
07:26They're everywhere, aren't they?
07:30When you were coming in the back, they were really under your feet.
07:33Oh, yes, yes.
07:34I had trouble with them at times.
07:36Come through the gate and I sort of stand, sort of set careful,
07:39because I didn't think they had knocked me over.
07:42It would be easy to look at this situation and say,
07:44well, that's too many dogs.
07:45It is a concern that they are a bit raucous
07:48and Diane's having to make sure she's got hold of something or someone.
07:52Yeah.
07:52When they're, you know, having their mad moment.
07:56But we love them to bits.
07:58Yeah.
07:58And we can't part with them.
08:00Very upset about it.
08:01They are so affectionate.
08:03They are a huge comfort.
08:05If I'm having a bad day, if I lay down, they'll crowd at me.
08:10Or if I fall over, they'll crowd all around and look after me.
08:17I mean, you've got a feel for them, haven't you?
08:19For Diane, I think all of these six dogs mean something different,
08:23but they're all in their own different ways.
08:26Very comforting to it.
08:27These dogs are going nowhere.
08:29The situation is what it is.
08:31These people really need help.
08:33And I'm here.
08:33So I'm going to do my best.
08:38Coming up.
08:39Hands in ears.
08:40Graham must step up.
08:43To get a handle on the howling.
08:46Now we've got trouble.
08:50He meets a mini poodle with a big beef at bath time.
08:55All right, all right.
08:56And learns how not to get in a tangle.
08:59Way more of your hand.
09:00You always move your hand.
09:01At the groomers.
09:03Voila.
09:12In Essex, Graham's answering an emergency call.
09:17From three generations at breaking point.
09:20With their six chaotic dogs.
09:24While first time mum Alex and baby Savannah
09:27struggle to cope with the extreme noise.
09:30It's just unbearable every time the door goes.
09:34The commotion underfoot.
09:36Back up.
09:37Back up.
09:37Is dangerous for Parkinson sufferer Diane.
09:42Obviously with her Parkinson's she's more likely to have a fall.
09:46If Graham.
09:47If Graham can't turn things around.
09:49Back up.
09:50The family faces a heart breaking decision.
09:54When they get really excited.
09:55They get under your feet.
09:56They jump up at you.
09:58You can't.
09:59You can't get rid of.
10:00No, we're.
10:00We're not losing them.
10:02This family really love their dogs.
10:04I mean they.
10:05They can't live without them.
10:07For Diane they mean an awful lot.
10:08And yet.
10:09Living with them.
10:10Is a nightmare.
10:14Before he can tackle the trip hazard that is so dangerous for Diane.
10:18Oi.
10:19Graham needs to deal with the chaos at the door.
10:22Absolute ma'am.
10:23Hello.
10:24And he thinks he knows exactly what's revving them up.
10:29The first thought I had when I met them is.
10:33These dogs aren't barking at the door to get rid of people.
10:35They've made the connection.
10:37We bark.
10:38People come in.
10:39So we get to say hello to lovely people.
10:42So we've got to turn that around.
10:44I've got to get these dogs to understand.
10:46That barking at the door is not what we want them to do.
10:49At its purest form.
10:50We could just ignore them.
10:53They need to be taught a new way to meet and greet.
10:57This is the best way to do it with six dogs.
10:59We just ignore them.
11:00And wait for them to calm down.
11:02Does that make sense?
11:03Yeah.
11:03Absolutely.
11:03Yeah.
11:04So once they calm down.
11:05We can tell them.
11:06Good boy.
11:07And give them a little bit of fuss.
11:09Yeah.
11:09So the message is if you're quiet.
11:10Look what happens.
11:11Graham makes it sound simple.
11:14But time is tight.
11:16The only training window is while baby Savannah takes a nap.
11:21To help, one of the production team is ready to greet the whole pack.
11:26But only when they're calm enough to accept visitors.
11:30Lesson one.
11:31Ding dong doesn't mean go nuts.
11:35Right.
11:36Hands in ears.
11:37Yeah.
11:43Right.
11:43So we'll ignore this.
11:45All right.
11:47All right.
11:47All right.
11:48All right.
11:48All right.
11:48Don't say anything.
11:49Yeah.
11:49You see.
11:50It's natural instantly.
11:52All right.
11:53Now they've gone quiet.
11:54Look.
11:55So come on.
11:55You know what to do.
11:56Good girl.
11:57There you go.
11:57Oh dear.
11:58I don't know whether I'm training the dogs or the people here.
12:01I know.
12:02Well first attempt less than ideal.
12:05We need to do the opposite.
12:07We need to ignore the barking.
12:09And praise the silence.
12:11All right.
12:12More doorbell please.
12:13Can Alex and Michael remember the golden ticket?
12:17And keep schtum?
12:20Right.
12:23Wait for it.
12:25Good.
12:27Well done.
12:28Good girl.
12:29Good girl.
12:30Well done.
12:32You did the right thing there.
12:34But you could praise him in a calm way or an excited way.
12:37How calm are we talking?
12:38I'll tell you how calm.
12:39Baby in your arms about to fall asleep.
12:41Yeah.
12:42Good girl.
12:43Manifest inner hippie.
12:44Yes.
12:45Manifest inner hippie.
12:46Very good.
12:47With her baby sleeping upstairs.
12:49Right.
12:50Doorbell please.
12:51This should be an easy note for Mum Alex.
12:57Right.
12:59Wait for it.
13:01Ah.
13:04Good.
13:06Go on then.
13:07Good girl.
13:08Well that was really good.
13:09In terms of barking, it was next to nothing.
13:11That's progress.
13:12Time for lesson two.
13:15Let's get our delivery person to actually ring the doorbell,
13:19not walk in the door.
13:21Right.
13:22Doorbell then please.
13:25OK.
13:31Now we've got trouble.
13:39The pack must understand, they'll only meet guests if they're calm.
13:46It's nearly.
13:48Nigel's good look.
13:49Good boy Nigel.
13:51And where Nigel leads.
13:53Good.
13:54The others follow.
13:56Your girls.
13:58You notice all that's going on.
14:00And the way I'm thinking is like, right, one of these is going to stop first.
14:04Who's it going to be?
14:04Turns out to be Nigel, right?
14:06Yeah.
14:06Then what happened was the girls went, hang on a minute.
14:08Yeah.
14:09He's getting a bit of fuss for being quiet.
14:11So then they all follow suit.
14:12Now the penny has dropped, the final test can begin.
14:17OK.
14:19Actually meeting the visitor.
14:24Oh, that was nothing, wasn't it?
14:27Two barks each.
14:28Good.
14:36One, two, three, four.
14:37And that was only one dog, I think.
14:41Good.
14:42Back.
14:48There you go.
14:52And as if by magic, it's a peaceful hello.
14:58Great.
15:00Lovely.
15:02All right.
15:03How's that compared to normal?
15:04No, it's pandemonium normally.
15:06That was obviously miniscule compared to what they normally barking, so...
15:09We're on a winner.
15:10Yeah, absolutely.
15:12Great.
15:13Well, what a difference.
15:15But the family needs to practise that after I've gone for themselves.
15:19They may have learnt to pipe down at the front door.
15:23Wake up.
15:23But making the pack safe for Diane
15:25could be much more challenging.
15:31I'm still a little bit worried about these six dogs getting underneath Diane's feet.
15:35And I want to give them a technique that keeps her safe,
15:38so that she's free to walk wherever she wants.
15:45Graham's dedicated his career...
15:48Let's see what we've got here, then.
15:49..to help out-of-control dogs.
15:51Ooh, that's puzzly.
15:53..but he also receives queries not always related to bad behaviour.
15:58So many questions from so many people.
16:01To answer them...
16:03I'm just going to zoom in.
16:04..he's gathered a team of top pet professionals.
16:07What a clever game.
16:09..including a vet...
16:10Good results.
16:11..a groomer...
16:13..and a nutritionist.
16:14This is obviously really high-quality food.
16:18..this morning...
16:19This is Maria from London.
16:22..he's concentrating on a grooming query.
16:25This is Sydney, our beautiful Bedlington Wippet.
16:29His furl is quite fine underneath.
16:32And that gets matted.
16:35Oh, bless him.
16:36And it gets twisted into knots,
16:39which get tighter and tighter and really hurts him.
16:42All right, let's see if we can get Sydney
16:44a bit of the help he desperately needs.
16:47Based in Godalming...
16:49I know, you are a good girl.
16:50..if anyone knows...
16:52Yes, you are.
16:53..how long-haired Bedlington Wippet Sydney
16:55and owners Maria and Kerry...
16:59There you go.
16:59..can avoid a matted coat...
17:01Hi, I'm Costi.
17:02I'm Maria.
17:03..it's world champion groomer, Costin Stoyker.
17:08How often do you take him to groomers?
17:10Maybe twice a year.
17:12Is he cut?
17:13Or is he just buffed and brushed, nothing else?
17:15No, he's cut, shaved.
17:16Why do you shave him?
17:18Mainly because of the...
17:19Because of the mattes.
17:20Yes, yeah.
17:21We'd like his fur to be longer,
17:22but if it's going to do the matting underneath,
17:24by the time we keep cutting those off...
17:26He'll be bald.
17:27He'll be bald and patchy.
17:29The first thing Costin needs to know
17:31is what brushes they use at home.
17:34So we have two brushes.
17:35OK.
17:36Um, we were told to use this one first.
17:39By who?
17:39By the shopkeeper.
17:41But you can see he hates this one,
17:43that's why he chews it.
17:45I'm going to chew that and I'm going to throw in the rubbish
17:47this one because this is not the proper brush for him.
17:50Yeah?
17:51This is for a top knot for Poodle.
17:53Yes.
17:54And this is for...
17:55Let's say you take this dog for showing
17:56and I'm going to brush the jacket to stay flat
17:59before I go in the ring
18:00because this gives shyness to the coat.
18:03But definitely not for this dog
18:05and what you want to achieve with it, yeah?
18:07This brush I really don't like
18:09because it catches on his knots
18:12and then it pulls
18:14and I don't want to hurt my dog.
18:16Right.
18:16I love that brush
18:17because that's the correct brush for this type of coat.
18:19But I will never use this brush on a dry coat
18:22so I always wash the dog before
18:24or if I don't have the time, I'm conditioning the coat.
18:27I'm not going to lie to you,
18:28this is a really easy coat to maintain.
18:30Why? Because it's very wiry.
18:32Compared with a very curly coat, it brushes so easily.
18:37As a regular Best In Show winner...
18:39So this is...
18:40For the bin. For the bin.
18:41...Kostin always uses the best brush for each dog's coat,
18:46be it short, long, wiry or curly.
18:49So a knot is just like tiny, like we have here, so here.
18:52This is a knot, yeah?
18:54Next step, how to use them.
18:57It's very important how you brush the dog also
18:58because he doesn't like it
19:00because you might brush a little bit harder on the skin.
19:02You know, when you press on the, you know?
19:04Yes, that's too hard.
19:06Yes, so like this, yeah?
19:08Softer and a lot of movement, yeah?
19:11There is some good news for Sydney.
19:13His coat is now matted, his coat is knotted.
19:16From a knot becomes a matte, does that make sense?
19:19If there's no time to wash your pooch,
19:22soften their coat for brushing with a spray on conditioner.
19:26Some of them, they have aerosol
19:27and when you push aerosol, they don't panic, you know?
19:30Yeah, yeah.
19:31So this doesn't have aerosol.
19:33Oh, you just smell a menthol.
19:34No? It smells lovely.
19:36To locate any knots, gently comb it.
19:40You don't want to do this.
19:42No, no, no.
19:42So where you move your hand, you always move your hand.
19:44The thumb is always like your best friend, yeah?
19:48Holding the hair should stop any tugging,
19:51which is particularly useful
19:52when working on a curly or wiry coat.
19:56And look, he was fine.
19:57No mattes.
19:58No, I know.
19:58Easy.
19:59It's all done.
20:00Lovely.
20:01Easy to brush.
20:02Voila.
20:03Brilliant.
20:04Looks nice.
20:05It does, doesn't it?
20:06You can see right through it.
20:07My pleasure.
20:08So quick when you know what you're doing.
20:10Yeah.
20:11The right tool.
20:12If you do wash your dog, to avoid knots and mattes,
20:16be cautious with your towel.
20:18Also, you have to be careful when you dry him,
20:20because when you dry him, you have to pat it.
20:23Right.
20:23Don't rub it.
20:24Ah.
20:25It's no point.
20:27It's no point to brush him and then you create the mattes again,
20:31because you brush him.
20:32Look.
20:33Yeah.
20:33What happened?
20:35So you must pat him.
20:36Pat it, yeah.
20:37Not rub him.
20:37You have to think how the hair grows.
20:39So this is how you pat it.
20:40This is how you dry it.
20:41Yeah.
20:41You dry it how the hair grows.
20:43It makes sense.
20:44Yeah.
20:45It's one of those things, when somebody says it, it's obvious.
20:47It's obvious until he said it.
20:49Well, yeah.
20:50With Maria and Kerry now armed with the know-how.
20:55It was lovely to have you in my salon.
20:56Have you learned some tricks today.
20:58We certainly did.
20:59Thank you so much.
21:01My pleasure.
21:01Sydney can look forward to a not-and-mat-free future.
21:10Sydney happily let Costin get hands-on.
21:14But 230 miles north...
21:16Well, I'm in Yorkshire today.
21:18My part of Yorkshire, really.
21:20It's where I grew up.
21:21The Vale of York.
21:22There's a dog with a very touchy problem.
21:25I'm going to go see a couple who've got a dog who's turned on them.
21:32I just hope it hasn't gone too far, because if it's really bedded in, it's really difficult to convince a
21:38dog to sort of, to love again.
21:45Mini Poodle Reggie...
21:51..absolutely hates...
21:53..being handled.
21:56Morning.
21:57Hiya, Graham.
21:57Morning, how are you?
21:58Chris, isn't he?
21:59Please come on in.
21:59Thank you very much.
22:01Morning.
22:02Morning.
22:02Hi.
22:02This is Reggie.
22:03Reggie.
22:04Hello, Reggie.
22:08That's interesting.
22:10And if you stop, what happens then?
22:15He never bites.
22:17Just as well.
22:18You're not far away from him, are you?
22:20Blimey, all right.
22:20I've got no fear of him.
22:22I'm not scared of him.
22:24Blimey, all right.
22:24He's actually petrified of being touched.
22:27Blimey, all right.
22:28The nearer I go to his bottom.
22:30The Mario.
22:31Oh, he's away again now.
22:34He really don't like that, does he?
22:36Thank God.
22:37Thank God.
22:38Don't hold yourself an owl.
22:40All right.
22:41All right.
22:41All right.
22:42You OK?
22:44He wants me out.
22:45It comes to me.
22:46Yeah.
22:46It comes to you almost for reassurance.
22:48Yeah.
22:49But then when you stroke him, he doesn't like it.
22:53Blimey, all right.
22:54Reggie's behaviour is really upsetting to Gail and Chris,
22:58and I think Gail in particular.
22:59She just wants to be able to cuddle her dog.
23:02The irony of this is I'm convinced she's got a dog
23:05who just wants to be cuddled but he can't tolerate being touched that's really odd in fact i would
23:13say it's unique in my experience but why all right gail and chris have been getting mixed signals
23:20from reggie ever since he was a pop this is what we get every time he'll be quiet and as
23:26soon as
23:27i go like that we stroke him he growls at us and then he spends most of his time under
23:36the sofa
23:37come on reg and he won't come out and he won't come out for a couple of hours come on
23:42come on
23:43reggie's mood swings began after a much-needed b-day he just turned so aggressive
23:52he's that frightened if you're doing it he'll actually we yourself because he's that petrified
23:58now every outing with reggie fills the couple with dread
24:03when we take him out for a walk yeah we're waiting for him to have a poo and if it's
24:08a clean one it's
24:09like it's like it's like a stress relief but if it's a sticky one they're in for it it's not
24:17clean today
24:17it's dirty so we know what we've got to come when we get home
24:31it's a very stressful situation
24:40it doesn't make me feel good
24:43i hate it in fact because we're helping him we're not trying to kill him or anything
24:57but reggie's not one to forgive
25:00and forget
25:02i mean look at him now he should be sat here next to me not on his own sat there
25:06because he thinks he's
25:07going to get something done to him come on reg come on what's this
25:14even the threat of bath time throws reggie
25:19oh oh right into a frenzy oh you don't like that so no but if that sometimes if i don't
25:26get my hands
25:26out for where he'll get you by accident yeah yeah so he's taking it out on the towel isn't he
25:34i don't like that when i'm watching reggie i do have a bit of sympathy for it if i'm honest
25:40i can see why reggie wouldn't like that that can't be nice can it
25:46coming up now can graham show reggie's owners the way to his heart
25:51is through his stomach he's very keen on these treats and the pressure is on it's really important
25:57to stop the dogs from going on the dine's feet to tame this boisterous brood but i'm wondering
26:03maybe i can use that moving together as a pack as part of my training
26:07so
26:16graham's in north yorkshire where mini poodle reggie just hates being touched particularly at bath times
26:24it's a very stressful situation
26:28and it's breaking his owner's hearts he should be sat here next to me not on his own because he
26:33thinks
26:34he's going to get something done to him gail and chris believe his hatred of human contact
26:39is driven by fear he's actually petrified of being touched but graham disagrees one of the first
26:46things you said was i think he's a very scared dog he acts very scared yeah but what doesn't make
26:52sense
26:52is that he's also quite attention-seeking in he very really needy very needy right so does he growl
26:58because he's scared or does he growl because he's attention-seeking i don't know so when he's
27:05growling what you do in a lovely tone of voice you're like it's all right it's okay
27:14so he's like if i growl oh i get all this lovely stuff going on
27:19so i think is he doing it because he's scared or is he doing it because he's attention-seeking
27:23i think both at different times yeah in one dog you've almost got two zones you've got the top
27:29end of him is the attention-seeking i'm growling because i get love for it
27:35and at the back end we've got i don't like this i'm scared get away from me yeah
27:43i think what we've got to do is get him used to being in touch without growling
27:47and then transfer that towards his backside graham believes reggie can learn to love touch again
27:56but rather than throw him in at the deep end with bath time he wants to start somewhere
28:01altogether more comfortable he's very keen on these trees he likes these yeah the plan
28:08reprogram reggie by teaching him touch if i can give him a little touch good boy comes with reward
28:16good boy and graham's confident he'll embrace it again oh very good no reaction two things are
28:24happening one is he's getting rewarded for not reacting the other thing is we're creating a
28:28positive association with being touched and by taking things good boy at reggie's pace who's a good boy
28:37the touch is positively welcomed no reaction even in areas no one dared go good lad reggie may have
28:48embraced graham's touch but until now gail's been getting the cold shoulder can he learn to love the
28:56affection she's so desperate to give sit down goodbye goodbye goodbye yes goodbye right now then why
29:06are you asking him to say i don't know here's the thing if you ask him to sit and then
29:13he's a good
29:14boy and he gets a treat in his head what did he get rewarded for sitting yeah with her priorities
29:21reset
29:21good boy
29:25reggie keeps coming back for more good boy is that nice
29:31now he's responding well oh boy graham wants to up the ante goodbye by heading south goodbye to the
29:41no-go zone now then what i'm gonna ask you to do is give him a stroke from his head
29:46all the way down
29:47to the base of his tail let's see if he'll accept that
29:52good boy good boy and that'll do you that's enough good boy there you go super
30:02and even two hands and that if i were you i'd quit while you're ahead
30:07you see you can't help yourself you're like i said i said from his head to his tail so you
30:11did it twice
30:12anyway and then you're so pleased with yourself i'll put two hands on him and i'll start playing
30:15him like a keyboard don't push your luck no no i think we should get you to have a go
30:23chris yeah
30:24come here then it's a trap there you go not too much a little bit that'll do you
30:32good boy now reggie's happy with the couple's caresses yeah graham wants to truly test the bond
30:40this is very good what i'm going to suggest now is let's see if we can both give him a
30:44stroke
30:45without any tricks good boy hold on that's it right can you touch him good boy reg good boy look
31:00at this
31:01good boy red you've got your cuddly dog who likes being touched
31:07good boy red there you go only hours ago touch was not tolerated
31:18now he's looking for love so this is now just perseverance from us yeah the biggest problem
31:25is us for you yeah yeah honestly my biggest worry now it's not him whether or not you'll have the
31:30discipline to slow yourselves down because if you rush it you will mess it up i think the training
31:37was absolutely fantastic it i was amazed by it actually but graham doesn't want the magic to end there
31:46he now wants to help reduce the bottom bath times reggie finds so traumatic
31:53there is one last way that i think i can help chris and gail and that's that reggie
31:57does seem to have these sort of runny sticky boobs probably a bit more than the average
32:01dog so there's a question in my mind around nutrition and i'm not an expert in that but i
32:07know a lady who is i'm a resident dog nutritionist chloe this is chloe everybody
32:12it's lovely to meet you guys and mr reggie oh my goodness you're so sweet he'd growled his head
32:20off at you doing that really lovely with me yeah oh my goodness what a good lad grab a seat
32:25first
32:26thing chloe wants to get to the bottom of is what's been going in the other end all right so
32:32show me
32:32what he's been eating so far then reggie eats raw meat this is tripe and heart okay so is it
32:38going
32:38to whip a bit when i open it no are you sure honestly are you going to be the verdict
32:42graham
32:43smells like a cow's backside but then it is trying that quite literally is yeah this is obviously
32:48really high quality food it may be high quality grub but chloe's been doing some digging i actually
32:55have done a little bit of analyzing of reggie's diet and there's a few things that i think he might
32:59be missing so graham could you pass me the sweet potato i've always wanted to do this here's one i
33:05prepared
33:06earlier right so in this pan we have boiled sweet potato now we've not peeled it and this is really
33:15important because one of the things that i think reggie's lacking in is fiber now you know from your
33:20own diet that if you don't have enough fiber then our stores can be a little bit runny and
33:25interestingly carbohydrates help the brain take the happy hormones if we do that he's going to be less
33:31stress too as well as adding stress reducing carbs there are other quick fixes that could help reggie's
33:37runs the first is tree barks powder this is really good for helping to settle the stomach and take water
33:44out of the stool now the other thing that i like to use as well is this now you can
33:49get a number of
33:50different i know don't worry it's not going where you're worried that it's going it's going in the
33:54mouth i promise now this has a firming agent in it so not only does it help feed your dog's
34:01gut because
34:02it's a probiotic but it also firms up their stool as well so those are kind of your immediate quick
34:07fixes reggie's new mix might be just the ticket to firming him up but will it pass the taste test
34:16oh what's this what's this oh that's interesting what's this there you go good lad good boy reg
34:25he might be giving it a go here he might be hey this is nice it tastes of uh
34:31sweet potato and something woody you've had nearly half that bowl and that's meant to be a four
34:36days worth of food for you it's a big pause up from reggie good boy and we can stroke
34:45and you can stroke him yeah great was that helpful very yeah yeah yeah i've learned stuff
34:51as well brilliant thank you chloe that's magic so if like reggie your dog has sticky poos
34:57it's worth considering if they're getting enough fiber in their diet come on graham's brought the
35:03love back for reggie but until he's brought the pack into line it's a recipe for disaster
35:10back up back up and made homes safe for diane diane who lives with parkinson's she needs to be able
35:17to
35:18walk around unhindered his week is far from over it's important for mum's health and for
35:25her safety that we are able to get the dogs out of our way graham's in essex where three generations
35:40moved in together to look after grandma diane who has parkinson's she's quite advanced and we're
35:48not too sure how much longer we're going to have left with her but living with the family's six
35:53excitable dogs she could fall over our own let alone with having six dogs getting in between her
36:00feet has made her loving home dangerous back up it's really important to stop the dogs from going
36:06under diane's feet obviously with her parkinson's she's more likely to to have a fall last time graham
36:13quietened the barking we're on the winner yeah absolutely now he faces a bigger challenge back up
36:22getting diane safe in her own home but the problem with the six dogs is that they move around together
36:29as a pack you might say and for diane that's a real issue but i'm wondering maybe i can use
36:34that moving
36:35together as a pack as part of my training diane's safely out of harm's way we've got a bit of
36:42work to
36:42do graham can now teach michael and alex but this bit should be fun yeah i hope how to make
36:49it safe
36:50for her to be around her beloved dogs my thinking is if we can teach them to go to a
36:55place willingly
36:57then we can get them to go into that room close the door whenever you need diane to be walking
37:02around and there's no problem that sounds really good to keep them quiet i'll tell you how calm baby
37:09your arms are about to fall asleep graham needed the dogs relaxed manifest inner hippie yes manifest
37:15your inner hippie but this time he'll tap into their natural excitement and pack mentality
37:23in the bag i've got a whole load of dog toys all sorts of things brightly covered some treats as
37:29well
37:30i'm gonna spread them around in the kitchen and then it's gonna be a game of treasure hunt
37:36so as they're rushing in we start to go treasure hunt yeah right that becomes your new command further
37:42down the line as when you need the dogs out of the way dead easy treasure hunt yeah you bet
37:46in they go
37:47i love that graham hopes once the treasure hunt command beds in the dogs won't need as many toys
37:55or treats to clear the room very good but are they game hello you're ready are you oh not so
38:06fast
38:08i've set the treasure hunt up are we ready on your marks get set treasure hunt yay here you go
38:17hello come
38:17on then here you go treasure hunt yay come on tishies oh oh all right you might need to encourage
38:28you
38:28treasure hunt that's it but just as one dog steps into the kitchen another hey arrow steps out arrow
38:36treasure hunt what's this there you go so i can step out we can close the door momentarily all right
38:44now there's no rush to that the problem now is getting them out the dogs understand what's
38:50expected with graham right come on that's it that's enough come on there you go leave them wanting
38:56more out you go but will they play the game with alex and michael there's a toy each there you
39:03are
39:03how about you guys have a go come on in doggies very good treasure hunt there you go yay
39:10and you can check that one as well there you go treasure hunt here you go there you go come
39:16on
39:16then treasure hunt treasure hunt yay there's one two shoes really treasure hunt there you go
39:23yay lovely nice with a bit of repetition are you ready doggies come on you're ready alex
39:34treasure hunt yeah and michael treasure hunt have the dogs following their command excellent
39:47yay
39:50well i think the dogs have got the idea but i want to make this a real world scenario if
39:56we're all sat in
39:57the living room together and we need to move all of the dogs into the kitchen can we do that
40:03with the
40:03treasure hunt command and then give diane the chance to walk through unaided so can we do this
40:10from a different room we'll find out won't we good well we've got the whole family together minus diana
40:15course but the dogs are all here michael let's see if we can get them into the kitchen play a
40:21game of
40:21treasure hunt and then we can get diane to walk in unhindered can michael clear the lounge with the pack
40:27now settled on the sofa come on everyone treasure hunt wow that's impressive keep going
40:39done come on very good fantastic well done that was good wasn't it with the dogs happily playing
40:52treasure hunt that was quite impressive yeah huge improvement isn't it diane can enter the living
40:57room without them under her feet there you go how was the walk through unhindered it is very helpful
41:07thank you great yeah you're welcome these dogs that you love so much should be a bit easier to live
41:14with now yeah that's that's true um i think it's it's all gonna be good we can bring the dogs
41:20back in
41:22everyone's safely settled the six pack can get their real reward all right come everybody quality time
41:29around the people they love come on it's all they've ever wanted good silence reigns
41:37dogs are quiet this is going to make a difference isn't it huge difference practice makes perfect
41:42being consistent and using the tools that you've given us we should be able to really continue this
41:46and see a big improvement yeah well i'm glad i was able to help thank you very much graham yeah
41:51all the
41:52best thank you cheers diane look after yourself thank you so much all right and you lot be good
42:03it's going to alleviate a lot of the stress and that technique seems to be spot on for
42:07making sure that she can traverse the house without tripping over them and without them
42:11pushing her over graham's certainly given us the tools that we need to be able to train the dogs properly
42:16and i'm really looking forward to seeing what's to come it's really clear how much diane loves those
42:22six dogs but that love came with a cost they made her life really really difficult and now i think
42:28with the training that i'm sure they'll keep up going forward she's got all the upsides of having
42:33those six dogs how comforting they feel how much they love her with none of the downsides
42:43in essex the six pack are following the treasure hunt training to a tee
42:48but still packing a punch when it comes to noise no in yorkshire good boy richie's loving the attention
42:56when he's rewarded with his favorite treats nice but still hates his bum baths and maria is equipping
43:03herself with the tools so she can give sydney a much needed spruce up soon if you think your badly
43:10behaved dog could do with graham's help then why not get in touch details can be found at www.channel5
