00:09The music for Spirit Stoutman of the Cimarron is performed by world-renowned recording artist
00:14with an original score by Hans Zimmer, Academy Award-winning composer.
00:20Spirit's unconventional narrative is told through the film Songs and Score,
00:25which posed an unprecedented challenge to composer Hans Zimmer.
00:28Geoffrey phones out and says,
00:31I want to make a movie about a horse in the Wild West.
00:34Oh, and by the way, the horse won't speak.
00:36And oh, by the way, the music has to be in slice.
00:39Geoffrey, basically, you said to me that this is going to be an experiment.
00:43And I'm always into a bit of an experiment.
00:46You know, the impossible is always, you know, the fascinating thing.
00:56I always come to a movie with a point of view and a plan.
00:59This is what we're going to do.
01:01And I had a really great plan on this one.
01:03After all, it's the American West, so I hired every great guitar slinger in town.
01:07I was supposed to tell the story from the horse's point of view,
01:11and as soon as you heard somebody go plonk, you know,
01:14you mean there was a human being somewhere in the shot.
01:18You know, that idea didn't work, so I threw that away.
01:21And then I went, okay, let's go totally abstract.
01:23Let's go electronic.
01:33I did that for about a year, and that was really boring.
01:37Finally, I realized, you know, just try to write good melodies.
01:46Ultimately, you know, it has actually become this metamorphosis of all these different styles.
01:51You know, there are guitars now, and there's still lots of electronics in it,
01:55and there's an orchestra.
01:57You know, so it's kind of everything involved.
02:07Well, Hans is such a genius on so many levels of music.
02:11His music conveys emotions and attitudes like no other,
02:17which is really what the best musical scores do.
02:20They help tell the story.
02:23The first time you meet Spirit, you hear a song that Brian and I wrote called Here I Am,
02:28and we give Brian very strict instructions about the lyrics on the song,
02:32which was really, be very metaphorical, don't be specific, you know,
02:35so the first line he gives us is Here I Am.
02:38Here I am, this is me, I come to this world so wild and free.
02:48And we go, okay, let's change our minds.
02:50You're right, we go with that.
02:52So, you see the character, you hear the words Here I Am.
02:55You know, I think there's no doubt about it.
02:58For the Spirit soundtrack, Brian Adams sings a duet with Sarah McLachlan called Don't Let Go.
03:12These songs are telling me a story, and my role-winning storyteller
03:16is to sort of try to bring the emotion through my voice and bring him alive.
03:30There's a playful side to Spirit, and that is the side that he, you know,
03:33he's cocky, he's young, he's bullish, he's full of, you know.
03:40So, I wrote a song, I'll Get Off My Back, which is like, you know,
03:43you can try and write me, but you're not going to get there.
03:45And no matter how hard you try, it's not going to happen,
03:48because then you're going to end up in a turn.
03:50Get off my back, get out of my back, get out of my way,
03:56I'm running out of me.
03:58Get out of my way, get off my shot,
04:02get off my back, get off my back.
04:08And that pretty much sums up his feelings towards, you know,
04:12anybody who's trying to ride him.
04:14And it's really gutsy and driving and, you know, a fun, fun song.
04:18Brian's a rock and roller, and so, you know, with that, you know,
04:21comes a little bit of that bad boy spirit, you know, and we needed that.
04:27And that's why I related to the picture,
04:29because it wasn't about trying to be something I'm not,
04:32it was about trying to be me in this character.
04:36If there wasn't a place in this movie for Brian to express Brian
04:40and be Brian, that was it.
04:53I don't know.
05:34Brian brought this raw energy to spirit,
05:38the rock and roll, the energy that he has when he sings,
05:40the rawness, the emotion that he brings to it.
05:42Brian brought that to the table in space.
05:45Brian's songs are incredibly heartfelt and incredibly passionate,
05:49and they help the audience kind of keep involved in how, you know,
05:53in where spirit is at any given point.
05:55They felt through, like, his conscience in a way.
05:59Sound the bugle loud.
06:03Play it just for me.
06:06The song on the train goes down the bugle.
06:09And, um, he's busted at that point.
06:12He's at the lowest possible ebb he could possibly be.
06:15I'm a soldier.
06:18Walk so I must give up the fight.
06:23It's not a pop song.
06:25It's like a piece of music that has a little narrative to it.
06:29It's full of metaphors and describing his, you know, his inner strength.
06:48For Brian, I think it was an extraordinary challenge,
06:50because we needed him to be a singer, a songwriter, and an actor.
06:58It's like a songwriter, a songwriter, a songwriter, a songwriter, and a songwriter.
07:21I was thrilled when I heard what they've done,
07:24because I was like, oh, I would never have done that.
07:40Brian Adams collaborated with Hans Zimmer to compose the film's theme song,
07:45I Will Always Return.
08:00All the songs in this book really are Spirit's inner thoughts, you know,
08:05because after all, he doesn't speak.
08:10It will always return.
08:11You know, it doesn't matter how far away I am, you know, any of us will always go.
08:15There is a place we want to come back to, and we will come back to, if you're just personally.
08:21I think it's a pretty beautiful song.
08:23You know, it's certainly the gradual of this picture.
08:32It's hard to write a good melody.
08:34It's hard to write a good song.
08:36You know, you write from your gut.
08:37You write from instant.
08:38And this was one of the most enjoyable experiences for me,
08:44because, let me be honest, I'm a complete lunatic.
08:46I love my work, and I love digging in and spirit.
08:50No, no, no, it could all be better.
08:51It could all be different.
08:53And let's just throw it all out and start again,
08:55and experiment, and go to dangerous places,
08:58and be reckless about it.
09:00So, why get up in the morning unless you're going to have an adventure?
09:03As the sects of our life are ticking away,
09:06you have to be aware that it needs to be an adventure.
09:08So, why get up in the morning when we're together?
09:16We're all going to have an adventure.
09:17All right.
09:19Is it you?
09:21I'm always, always return.
09:32Ah, how do I do?
09:35Ah, how do I do?
09:35Ah, how do I do?
09:37Ah, how do I do?
