00:00Tab Baldwin resigns as head coach of the Ateneo Blue Eagles basketball team a week after players
00:05Rene Baterboña and Divine Adili died during a team-building activity. The Ateneo accepts the
00:11resignation effective immediately. Baterboña, 18, and Adili, 21, drowned under Baldwin's watch
00:17Monday, June 8, in a beach resort in Dipakulaw, Aurora. Baldwin broke his silence on the incident
00:23only on Friday, June 12, apologizing in a video message and saying he failed as a leader and a
00:29friend. He didn't appear before the fact-finding mission of the criminal investigation and
00:33detection group at Camp Crame on Monday, June 15. Only Ateneo Athletics Director M. Fernandez appeared
00:39before the CIDG, which had summoned Baldwin and other team and school officials to investigate
00:44the drowning incident. Meantime, Ateneo de Manila University President Father Roberto Yap says the
00:49school is sorry for not being quick at informing the public on the developments which has led to
00:54perceptions of inaction. But we understand completely that for loved ones the word accident
01:00is never easy to accept. Ateneo de Manila is not evading accountability. After announcing Baldwin's
01:10resignation, Yap also says a change in leadership is necessary to ensure the integrity of the Ateneo's
01:15sports programs and safety protocols governing them. Yap also says an independent fact-finding panel
01:35composed of legal and technical experts will investigate the players' deaths. Baldwin took over the team in 2015 and
01:42steered the Blue Eagles to four UAAP championships.
