00:03Hello. Hello. Hello. This feels really sweet. It's like a dream come true for me. No, no, no, no.
00:11Isn't it? It's great dream for me. Twinned with Blue Peter. We've got a Blue Peter twist today.
00:16We do. We've got a very exciting day today. As you can see, we are joined by Blue Peter legend
00:20Sarah Green.
00:21Did you know? Did you know each other? We might know each other. We may have just had a very,
00:28very lengthy hug.
00:29Yes, for sure. The reason Sarah is here today is to help us uncover a piece of history.
00:37During recent building work at Television Centre, builders found a Blue Peter time capsule which was buried 41 years ago.
00:44How? You didn't have to say that. You didn't have to say that for 41 years ago.
00:47It is so amazing. So 41 years ago, buried down to the ground and today we get to see what
00:52treasure lies inside.
00:54Sarah is presenting on the day the capsule was buried in March 1981.
00:58Do you remember a thing? I do. It was a very cold day in March.
01:04And yes, I can't remember exactly what was in there though.
01:09Ah. Honestly. So it's going to be almost as much of a surprise for me as it is for you.
01:14We can give you some sort of a reminder here. Really?
01:17OK.
01:18Let's have a look at that day.
01:22It seems that a lot of people like the idea of burying important records in a sealed box, including the
01:28Class 8L of Samuel Lucas School in Hitchin.
01:32They wrote to say they'd like to bury the records they'd made about what life is like in the 1980s
01:37in the new car park that's being built at Television Centre just near the Blue Peter office.
01:42Yes.
01:43Now, Suzanne, can you put your lock on? Lower away. Let me give you a hand with that one.
01:49And the next job is to put a huge concrete slab into place. And the plaque is a beautiful work
01:55of art. It says Blue Peter 1980s box. Beneath this ramp lies a record of life written in the 1980s.
02:05Yes.
02:05That was buried just as they were building the car park. Now, 41 years later, that car park's no longer
02:10there because they're building sort of apartments and flats and stuff. And this was unearthed. Looks a little bit different
02:16now. Look at that.
02:17Smells a bit musty.
02:18It's quite a bit. It does. It does. I'm sort of smelling it now. But that plaque, you know they
02:21screwed that plaque on?
02:22Yeah.
02:23It got nicked. So even if something is screwed down, it still gets...
02:27It doesn't.
02:27Well, we can't, we can't open it. We have to have Richard. Now, Richard, Richard's been waiting for 41 years.
02:35This is his job.
02:36Hello, Richard.
02:36It's actually an open time capsule.
02:37I want to...
02:38You're already one of the kids, isn't there?
02:41So let's stand back because it probably is a bit...
02:43Are you just going to smash the bits?
02:46Um, best not. I'll try and leave it open. I don't think it will take much. So let's give it
02:50a go.
02:51Go for it. Go for it. Go for it. Let's see what happens.
02:52I feel like the metal's going to fly off and then the spider comes out of there.
02:56Oh, oh, look.
02:58Oh.
02:58Oh, my God.
02:59Oh, my God.
03:02I don't think...
03:05I don't think you need to see this.
03:10Well, look at that.
03:11Oh, my God.
03:12Perhaps we should have rashed things up a little more.
03:17Did one of the Blue Peter dogs put something?
03:19Right. I'm not feeling close enough to smell that, but...
03:23Do you know what? I reckon it's wrapped in plastic and I reckon under there there might be something salvageable.
03:28Well, we're going to find out properly a little bit later on, aren't we?
03:33Thank you very much.
03:35Thank you, Richard. We'll see you in 41 years because we're going to put another one down there now.
03:42But there is a film spool under there, isn't there?
03:45It's all about, I think, the building of the car park.
03:48The original one.
03:49Am I right in saying that, and our team here will know, isn't old film quite explosive?
03:56Yeah. What? So stand right back.
03:59Oxidate.
04:00Yeah.
04:01Bobble up in the Doctor Who type way.
04:03Nitrate.
04:03Yeah, nitrate. So handle it with care.
04:06But there are projects in there that were done by kids I do remember now.
04:10You must remind us of all of that.
04:12We may not be able to judge for ourselves, Sarah.
04:15But thank you.
04:16Good luck with that.
04:16You better get your marigolds.
04:18Don't get all the root of that.
04:20And hazmat soup.
04:22Very good.
04:23And then you're going outside a little bit later on because you're going to...
04:27We're going to bury it all again.
04:28But not that.
04:29But not that.
04:30A brand new one.
04:31In lots of waterproof material.
04:33In lots of, lots of very safe material.
04:36Yes.
04:37That's what we'll be doing.
04:37So we'll get some of those items cleaned up so we can have a closer look at them later on
04:41in the show.
04:41If there is anything there that can be.
04:43Yeah.
04:44And we were getting quite nostalgic today.
04:46We had a little look back at what was going on in 1981.
04:49Firstly, it was the year I was born.
04:50Yeah.
04:51Oh, stop.
04:52Charles and Diana got married.
04:54Yeah, I was a bookings clerk at the BBC and then moved to New Zealand.
04:57Did you?
04:58Yes.
04:58I met Mike Smith three days after that.
05:00Did you?
05:01Oh, wow.
05:01We have not met at that stage.
05:02Yes, it was the very first London marriage.
05:04First London marriage thing.
05:05Yeah, exactly.
05:06Why not happening?
05:06I think, I know your face.
05:07I know your face.
05:08Was number one.
05:09This old house.
05:10This was number one of the times.
05:12Oh, June.
05:13What a year it was.
05:14Oh, dear.
05:15It was a good year.
05:17Yeah, bless you.
05:18Well, we'd like to know what you were doing in 1981.
05:20Or perhaps you've unearthed a piece of history when you were clearing out your attic.
05:24Or maybe you've dug something up in the garden.
05:26So do get in touch.
05:27And we'll read some of them out later on in the show.
05:29That's really whiffy, isn't it?
05:30Good luck.
05:31It really is.
05:31I'm not breathing properly, actually, in the moment.
05:33I've actually had to do that.
05:34Not smelling something.
05:36It's rust and age.
05:38Oh, that's me.
05:46Hello, sir.
05:47Oh.
05:49No, I understand that you're going to bury things in this box later on to get down there.
05:54Yes.
05:54And I'm not burning all that stuff you asked me to bury.
05:57I'm not burying.
05:58Okay?
05:58Okay, all right.
05:59I've got a script on some nice signed pictures.
06:01I've got a whole load of special stuff, you know, that I want to get a shot.
06:04I know you do.
06:04We've got a script.
06:05We've got our mugs that we used that were on the front of the set here as well.
06:09They are going in.
06:10And that's it.
06:11Mugs, signed pictures, bits and bits and bits.
06:13Yeah.
06:13That sort of stuff.
06:14Yeah, stick around too long.
06:15We might put, yeah.
06:17Steve Wilson might go in there.
06:21Right.
06:21Thank you very much indeed.
06:22We'll see a little bit later, Sarah.
06:24Right.
06:24Here's what's coming out on today's show.
06:25Father's Day this Sunday.
06:27But if you-
06:27Back in time for our next item.
06:29Earlier in the show, we opened up the Blue Peter time capsule, which was uncovered recently
06:33during building works here at Television Centre.
06:38Mmm.
06:39Yeah.
06:40Not, not great.
06:43It looked like a very old ginger cake.
06:46The box was about 41 years ago in 1981.
06:50So the contents have needed a little bit of cleaning up.
06:53A little bit.
06:54A little bit.
06:54Blue Peter legend Sarah Green has been taking a closer look.
06:57She's outside Television Centre where we're going to be re-bearing it with some new items,
07:01Sarah.
07:02And it looked a lot like the original contents had disintegrated.
07:05Did anything survive?
07:09Yes, they did.
07:11But I took your advice with wearing the rubber gloves for this bit.
07:14In case, just have a quick look inside now.
07:18But I'll do it very carefully.
07:20There you are.
07:20Lift that up because that's what we saw.
07:24Can you get in there and see this?
07:26Yes.
07:27I mean, it's just disgusting.
07:29And I think what happened was that the metal that was lining the box just corroded, sadly,
07:35and attacked everything that was inside.
07:38But what we have managed to rescue are what the kids, the six kids that helped with the
07:46box and put stuff in their time capsule, they all did little projects.
07:50And one of the children, Bez, was to collect sweet wrappers and crisp wrappers of the day.
07:57And we've managed to come up with, we've got crinkly bacon flavour, because crinkly bacon
08:05tastes different from normal bacon.
08:07We've got salt and vinegar potato crisps.
08:09We've got, what is this, fried onion flame and maize snacks.
08:14Delicious.
08:15And I think these are those tree, but look, these are polos.
08:20Oh, they're different.
08:21Polos, polos that were different colours.
08:24Very close are polos.
08:25You see, it's so lovely that you're here.
08:27And we will explain, you're here to take this whole thing forward for the next generation.
08:32But I just want to say, once upon a time, your theme tune was recorded on one of those.
08:39That is the original Mike Oldfield disc of the piece of theme tune, which is just
08:45about intact enough to make it out.
08:47These, I know, I haven't been breathing since we opened this.
08:51Because, you know, just breathe it through your mouth.
08:54And then there was some footage.
08:56Oh, because it's really strange being here.
08:58We're in a building site.
08:59Again, 41 years ago, this had just stopped being a building site.
09:04Oh, we're being kept an eye on the air here.
09:07And they had just finished a big massive story car park, which has just been taken down.
09:12And that's when this box was discovered.
09:14Because there was a plaque on the wall saying where it was.
09:17But someone had nicked the plaque.
09:18Can you believe that?
09:19Yeah.
09:20And it's sober.
09:22They're quite right too.
09:23And so inside the box, there were these goodies here from the program.
09:27This is footage of the building of the original car park here.
09:32I don't know whether it would still be playable.
09:35But we'll put it back in the box, in a new box, in just a moment.
09:40And this footage, I've no idea what this is.
09:45But maybe, in a hundred years time, when they think this up again.
09:50Yeah.
09:50In your capsule, which will be a lot better if they find out.
09:56But it's quite exciting.
09:58It is.
09:58It really is quite exciting to go back in time.
10:00For me, it's very, very poignant, I have to say.
10:03It is a bit like being in a time warp.
10:05Still a building site, but such a different surrounding now, a television centre.
10:09Now, I'm going to hand over to you, Matsi, because you've got some people to introduce.
10:13I do.
10:13We're going to help you with the next bit.
10:15I do.
10:16So we have these five people, who were all in year six.
10:19And they've been working tirelessly over the last three weeks on 15 projects.
10:23And today, they have some really cool pieces that they want to put into the time capsule.
10:28So I'm pretty excited about this.
10:29Are you guys?
10:29Yeah.
10:30Yeah?
10:30Okay.
10:31So we have kids to be on this side.
10:33What do you have?
10:35I have Premier Leeds Mezzly and Premier Leeds stickers.
10:38Ooh, okay.
10:39And we have Salma.
10:40What do you have on that?
10:41I have a customer.
10:42Nice.
10:43And yourself, Charlie?
10:45And I have a Tune app from 2022.
10:48Oh, wow.
10:48So it's got to be a simple plan on that as well, doesn't it?
10:51Olivia?
10:51I have a TPU kit, which is, like, used through the pandemic and COVID.
10:56Wow.
10:57And we also have Musa.
10:57I have a PS4 controller.
10:59Oh, I love that.
11:00Shall we all try and put it inside there?
11:02In the time capsule.
11:04There we go.
11:04And we also have some lovely bits here.
11:07I've got Beep headphones.
11:09Oh, my goodness.
11:10I might use my girlfriend and put it in there.
11:12I mean, that's a lovely project over here, too.
11:14So we'll run down to the...
11:16Oh, and a travel card.
11:18And before we close this time capsule, there's something beautiful that I have that I want to share.
11:24It's the BP badge.
11:25It's got to go in, hasn't it?
11:27It's got to go in.
11:28Oh!
11:28And one more thing before you finish.
11:30Yes.
11:31We've got in here signed script from today, because that was what was in the original box.
11:37There we are.
11:38And...
11:39I'm sorry, Holly and Phil, I've stolen your mugs.
11:43They're going in there.
11:44There we are.
11:45There.
11:45And then we'll get Richard in.
11:47Is everything in that's meant to be in there now?
11:49We've got some beads.
11:50Yeah?
11:50Any more?
11:51We'll get Richard in, who opened the original box earlier, to come and rebury it.
12:00Are you there?
12:01Have you got anything you need?
12:02I trust it.
12:03There we have you.
12:04Right, okay.
12:08And what does it say here?
12:10Mitsui Fuda-san, I'm here, buried a time capsule in the public car park next to McFarland Place
12:17on 14th of June 2022.
12:20Wow.
12:21Did this one go on top?
12:24Yes.
12:25With the thing that I put it inside, but I think this with the box is probably best.
12:29You think it's best just to...
12:30Okay.
12:31So, you don't want this stuff to go inside it too?
12:34I think, yeah, I think we...
12:35Yeah, I think we...
12:36Yeah, I think we should.
12:49Yeah.
13:06Yeah, yeah, yeah.
13:19Yeah, yeah.
13:19I think we should...
13:23Hello. Hello. This feels really sweet. It's like a dream come true for me.

16:19Oh my God.
16:20Oh my God.
16:22I don't think you need to see.
16:24I don't think you need to see.
16:28Well.
16:29Look at that.

16:52So this is a thing to do.
16:53Well, that's a thing to do.
16:54That's a thing to do.
16:55That's a thing to do.
16:56Thank you, Richard.

18:46in touch and we'll read some of them out later on in the show that's really whiffy isn't it good
18:50luck yes i'm not breathing properly actually in the moment i'm actually not smelling something
18:55it's rust and age and that's me
19:08now i understand that you're going to bury things in this box uh later on to get down there
19:13and i'm not going to all that stuff you asked me to bury i'm not burying okay okay
19:18i think there's some nice signed pictures i got all those special stuff you know that i want to get
19:23a shot i know you do we've got our mugs that we use that were on the front of the
19:27set here as well
19:28they are going in and um and that's isn't it mugs signed pictures and bits and boxes yeah i think
19:33i've got that sort of stuff yeah stick around too long we might but it's yeah see what's in my
19:37right thank you very much indeed we'll see you in the later sarah right he's also coming out
19:50so
19:51hello hello
19:53this feels really sweet green country swimming well isn't it that's great for me
19:59twinned with blue peter with a blue peter twist today we do we've got a very exciting day today
20:05as you can see we are joined by blue peter legends sarah green did you know do you know each
20:10other we might
20:10do it rings a bell we've just had a very very lengthy hug that's for sure
20:18the reason sarah is here today is to help us uncover a piece of history during recent building
20:25work at television center builders found a blue peter time capsule which was buried 41 years ago
20:31come on they didn't have to say that you didn't have to say that before
20:33it is so amazing but to me so 41 years ago buried down to the ground and today we get
20:39to see what
20:39treasure lies inside sarah was presenting on the day capsule was buried in march 1981 remember remember
20:46britain day i do it was a very cold day in march and uh yes i can't remember exactly what
20:55was in there
20:55though honestly so it's going to be almost as much of a surprise for me as it is for you
21:01we can give you
21:02some sort of a reminder here really you'd like to know let's uh let's have a look at that day
21:09it seems that a lot of people like the idea of burying important records in a sealed box
21:14including the class 8l of samuel lucas school in hitchin they wrote to say they'd like to bury
21:21the records they've made about what life is like in the 1980s in the new car park that's being built
21:26a television center just near the blue peter office now susan can you put your lock on lower away let
21:35me
21:35give you a hand with that one and the next job is to put a huge concrete slab into place
21:40and the plaque
21:41is a beautiful work of art that says blue beat the 1980s box beneath this ramp lies a record of
21:48life in britain in the 1980s that was buried just as they were building the car park now 41 years
21:56later that car parks are no longer there because they're building sort of apartments and flats and
22:00stuff and this was unearthed looks a little bit different now look at that smells a bit mustard it's
22:05it's done so i've sort of spun it now but that plaque you know they screwed that black on it
22:10got
22:10nicked so even if something is screwed down it's still getting we can't we can't open it we have to
22:17have richard now richard richard's been waiting for 41 years this is his job is actually an open time
22:24capsule
22:28so let's turn back because it probably is a bit are you just gonna smash this um
22:33best not i'll try and i'll try and leave it open i don't think it will take much so
22:37let's give it a go go for it go for it go for it let's see what happens i feel
22:40like the metal's gonna fly
22:41off and the spider comes out of there oh oh look oh i don't need i don't think you need
22:53to see
22:57well oh my god perhaps we should have rashed things up a little more did one of the blue
23:04people put something i'm not feeling close enough to smell that but do you know what i reckon it's
23:12wrapped in plastic and i reckon under there there might be something salvageable so we're going to
23:16we're going to find out properly a little bit later on aren't we um thank you very much
23:22who is actually thank you richard we'll see you in 41 years because we're gonna
23:27we're gonna put another one down there now but there is a film spool under there isn't
23:31there and that was all about i think the building of the car park the original one am i right
23:37in
23:37saying that an art team here will know isn't isn't old film quite explosive yeah what so stand right
23:45back oh because i have it here bubble up yeah it's a doctor who type nitrate it's yeah nitrate so
23:52you
23:52handle it with care but there are projects in there that were done by kids i do remember now
23:57you might have to remind us of all of that we may not be able to judge for ourselves sarah
24:02um but
24:02thank you good luck with that you better get your marigolds don't get off route without a hazmat suit
24:09and then you're going then you're going outside a little bit later on because uh you're going to
24:14we're going to bury it all again but not that but not that a brand new one yes lots of
24:19waterproof
24:20in lots of lots of very safe material yes that's what we'll be doing so we'll get some of those
24:25items cleaned up so we can have a closer look at them later on in the show if there is
24:28anything there
24:29that can be yeah and we were looking quite nostalgic today we had a little look back at what was
24:34going
24:34on in 1981 firstly it was the year i was born yeah oh stop charles and diana got married stop
24:41yeah i was
24:42bookings clerk at the ebc and then moved to new zealand did you i met mike smith three days after
24:47that did you have not met at that stage yes it was the very first london first london
24:52yeah yeah exactly what happened i think um was number one this old house this was number one
24:58it was a good year yeah bless you well we'd like to know what you were doing in 1981 or
25:07perhaps you've
25:08a piece of history when you were clearing out your attic or maybe you've done something up in the
25:13garden so do get in touch and we'll read some of them out later on in the show that's really
25:17whiffy
25:17isn't it good luck i'm not breathing properly actually in the moment i'm actually not smelling
25:23it's rust and age and oh that's me
25:33how's that now i understand that you're going to bury things in this box uh later on to get down
25:40there and i'm not going to all that stuff you asked me to bury i'm not burying okay okay i've
25:46got a
25:46script on some nice signed pictures i've got a whole lot of special stuff you know that i want to
25:50get
25:50i know we've got a script we've got our our mugs that we use that were on the front of
25:55the set here
25:55as well they are going in and um and that's is it mugs time pictures bits and boxes yeah i
26:00think
26:00i've got that sort of stuff yeah stick around too long we might put it's yeah see what's in my
26:07uh right thank you very much indeed we'll see you later sarah right here's what's coming up on today's
26:12show uh father's day this sunday but if you're back in time for our next item earlier in the show
26:17we
26:17opened up the blue peter time capsule which was uncovered recently during building works here at
26:22television center
26:27yeah not not great it looked like a very old ginger cake uh the box was buried 41 years ago
26:36in 1981
26:37so the contents uh have needed a little bit of cleaning up a little bit uh blue peter legend
26:42sarah green has been taking a closer look she's outside television center where we're going to be
26:46re-bearing it was a new item sarah and it looked a lot like the original contents had disintegrated
26:52did anything survive
26:56uh yes they did um but i took your advice with wearing the rubber gloves for this bit
27:01in case um just have a look it's a quick look inside now or i'll do it very carefully there
27:07you
27:07are lift that up because that's what we saw can you get in there and see this i mean it's
27:15just
27:15disgusting and i think what happened was that the metal that was lining the box just corroded sadly
27:22and attacked everything that was inside but what we have managed to uh rescue are what the kids um
27:30the six kids that helped with the box and put stuff in their time capsule they all did little projects
27:37and one of one of the children theirs was to collect sweet wrappers and crisp wrappers of the day and
27:44we've managed to come up with um we've got crinkly bacon flavor because crinkly bacon tastes different from
27:53normal bacon um we've got salt and vinegar potato crisps we've got um uh what is this fried onion flame
28:00and
28:00maize snacks delicious and i think these are those tree but look these are polos oh polo polos that
28:09were different colors different colors once it's so lovely that you're here and we will explain you're
28:16here to take this whole thing forward for the next generation but i just want to say once upon a
28:21time
28:21your theme tune was recorded one of those that is the original mike oldfield this of the piece of
28:30theme tune which is just about intact and i can make it out these i know i have to i
28:36haven't been
28:36breathing since we opened this because you know just breathe it through your mouth and then there was
28:42some footage oh because it's really strange being here we're in a we're in a building site again
28:4741 years ago this had just stopped being a building site oh we've got the we've been kept an eye
28:52on
28:53here here um and they had just finished a big monster story car park which has just been taken down
28:59and that's when this box was discovered because there was a platform saying where it was but someone
29:04had nicked the plan can you believe that yeah i just don't know quite right too um and so inside
29:12the box
29:12there were these goodies here from the program this is footage of the building of the original car park
29:18here um i don't know whether it would still be usable but we'll put it back in the box in
29:25a new box
29:26um in just a moment and um this footage i've no idea what this is but maybe in a hundred
29:34years time
29:34when they think this up again yeah in in your capsule which will be a lot better find out but
29:43um but it's quite exciting it really is quite exciting to go back and back for me it's very
29:48very poignant i have to say it is a bit like being in a time warp still a building site
29:53but such a
29:54different surrounding now at television center now i'm going to hand over to you maxi because you've got
29:59people to introduce i'm going to help you with the next bit i do so we have these five people
30:04who
30:05were all in year six and they've been working tirelessly over the last three weeks on 15 projects
30:10and today they have some really cool pieces that they're going to put into the time capsule so i'm
30:15pretty excited about this are you guys yeah okay uh so you have um kiss to be on this side
30:20what do you
30:21have um i have a premier league magazine and premier league stickers oh okay and we have salma what do
30:27you have on that i have a cup of coffee cup nice and yourself charlie and i have a tune
30:32map from 2022
30:34oh wow so it's got to be a little simple time on that doesn't it yeah um olivia i have
30:39a tpu kit which is like
30:41music during the pandemic wow i'm inside lusa i have a ps4 controller oh i love that should we
30:48try and put it inside there in the time capsule there we go and we also have some lovely bits
30:53here
30:54i've got beat headphones oh my goodness i put it in there and we have some lovely projects here too
31:01so we'll run down to the oh and a travel card and before we close this time capsule there's something
31:08beautiful that i have that i want to share it's the bp badge it's got to go in hasn't it
31:14it's got to
31:14go in oh and one more thing before you finish yes we've got in here signed script from today because
31:22that was what was in the original box there we are and i'm sorry phil i've stolen your marks
31:29they're going in there there we are there and then we'll get richard in is everything in that's meant to
31:35be in there now yeah any more we'll get richard in who opened the original box earlier to come and
31:44rebury it are you there have you got anything you need right okay
31:54and what does it say here mitsui food san and here buried a time capsule in the public car park
32:02next to
32:03farm place on the 14th of june 2022. wow did this one get on top
32:13you think it's best just uh okay so you don't want this stuff to go inside it too
32:20i think you should yeah i think you should i think you should i think you should i think
32:27these things have got going as well for the crew there we are there there here we are well we're
32:34going to let that out i think those four things are going years ago when they went up like a
32:38breathe
32:39i hope the technology in a hundred years can uh can watch whatever that it felt like a sturdier box
32:47it looks like it but it will corrode less yeah right idea and then richard of course has to stand
32:52beside
32:53that now for a hundred years yeah for when someone opens it up in the future because he is in
32:57charge
32:57of uh television time capsule very busy job someone's got to do it well done guys thank you
33:03that well done to kia as well right it's competition time
33:10hello hello hello
33:13this feels really like a dream come true for me
33:16no no no no i'm twinned with blue peter for the blue peter twisted today we do we've got a
33:23very
33:23exciting day today as you can see we are joined by blue peter legend sarah green
33:32we've got a very lengthy hug that's for sure the reason sarah is here today is to help us uncover
33:41a piece of history during recent building work at television center builders found a blue peter time
