00:00Roses are red. Violets are blue. Guess who just took a picture of you?
00:07Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're counting down our picks for the most original scary movies
00:13that revitalized the horror genre over the last couple of years.
00:17Rejoice in the intimacy that awaits. No dissonance, only warmth.
00:2310. Send Help. Survival horror is a well-trod subgenre, but if there's one thing Sam Raimi does best,
00:40it's subverting expectations. Mixing psychological tension with sharp character writing,
00:45the film turns a stranded survivor setup into something far more uncomfortable and unpredictable.
00:51Rather than relying purely on jump scares, Send Help leans into desperation, paranoia,
00:57and the slow collapse of trust under pressure. Of course, none of that would be possible without
01:01Rachel McAdams and Dylan O'Brien, who are very game.
01:05Getting us out of here. That should be your focus. Not being Susie Homemaker over here.
01:09What did you just say to me? Let's not forget, I'm your boss. You work for me.
01:13In an era where many horror movies chase instant reactions, Send Help succeeded by remembering
01:19that sustained tension can be far more unsettling than a sudden scream.
01:23You're so done. Huh?
01:25Yeah, you're so fired. Oh, am I? Yeah. Oh, no!
01:29Number 9. Together. Are you sure you want this?
01:35I do. Like a real romantic painting, romance and body horror just work together. It's not too surprising,
01:42considering Together came from the twisted minds of real-life couple Alison Brie and Dave Franco,
01:48who also star. Their chemistry is palpable, especially when things start to get bloody.
01:53That's not to say the horror here is all physical. Despite being squarely in the body horror genre,
01:59Together turns the grisly set pieces into a surprising emotional arc.
02:04I was trying to let you go.
02:07Do you want to let me go?
02:11It's buried beneath a lot of bloody moments you'll want to watch between your fingers,
02:15but it's still there.
02:17Yeah, I'm so sorry it took me so long, but I just, I f***ing suck and I love you so
02:22much.
02:23I love you so much.
02:25Number 8. Heart Eyes.
02:27Who doesn't love a good slasher?
02:30In the midst of an era defined by supernatural entities and high-concept blockbusters,
02:35it's refreshing to see something like Heart Eyes go back to the basics.
02:44It's a guy with a knife and a lot of attractive people getting diced. Easy as can be.
02:49My basement just flooded.
02:51By mixing rom-com tropes with brutally creative kills, the film somehow balances sweetness,
02:57self-awareness, and genuine suspense without collapsing under its own tone.
03:02I was Pikachu for Halloween, too.
03:04Oh, yeah.
03:05That wasn't Halloween.
03:07Then what was it?
03:08It was Tuesday.
03:09That is harder than it sounds.
03:11A lesser movie would have turned into a non-stop parody.
03:14But Heart Eyes treats both its romance and horror seriously enough to stick the landing.
03:19Love hurts, b***h.
03:21Number 7. Obsession.
03:23Hey, another horror flick about relationships.
03:25Although this one takes a very different approach.
03:28Does Nikki like me?
03:30Yeah.
03:39I'm your freaky Nikki.
03:40Led by the creative vision of YouTuber-turned-filmmaker Curry Barker,
03:44obsession is all dread, all the time.
03:47At least, until the inevitable shoe drops.
03:50All things considered, it's a simple story.
03:52Boy meets girl, boy makes a wish for girl to love him, the monkey's paw curls, and things
03:58get really, really creepy.
04:00No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, don't do that!
04:06I thought we were having a nice date!
04:08We are a party!
04:09Not only is it refreshing to see up-and-coming talent take Hollywood by storm, it's clear Barker
04:15understands exactly what makes a good horror movie tick.
04:18Like, what? Is she okay?
04:19No.
04:21Number 6. Iron Lung.
04:23Don't mind me!
04:26I'm just trying to go home.
04:28Another day, another YouTuber releasing a movie in theaters.
04:32But while Curry Baker went through the traditional studios,
04:35Mark Markiplier Fischbach handled Iron Lung's distribution all on his own.
04:40You're not hearing me when I say there's something else. Something alive.
04:47There might just be.
04:49We really can't overstate just how impressive it is for an indie filmmaker to land such a wide
04:54release, let alone do so well at the box office. On its own, that'd be enough for Iron Lung to
04:59earn
05:00its flowers. But the claustrophobic thriller earns high marks on its own merits, too. Once again,
05:05this little horror sensation proved that the genre is alive and thriving if you look in the right places.
05:13Number 5. Strange Darling.
05:15Trust us when we say this is not the movie you think it is.
05:20Unfortunately, saying any more would completely spoil the reason Strange Darling is one of the
05:25genre's best and brightest. It preys on audience expectations to craft a distinctly chilling story
05:31of twists, turns, and plenty of blood-soaked carnage. While it's a relatively lower-budget film,
05:40the stylish direction and standout performances are blockbuster-caliber or better. It's a shame this
05:46indie didn't make the splash it deserved in theaters, but if you haven't given this one a chance yet,
05:50this is your official calling. Run, don't walk.
05:53I am the electric lady.
05:57Number 4. Heretic.
05:58Mr. Reid?
05:59I am. Hello to you. Hello, wait. You are Paxton, you are Barnes.
06:03Okay. Um, no, uh, Paxton Barnes, yes.
06:06Paxton Barnes.
06:07Most horror movies want your pulse racing. Heretic wants you thinking, and that might be even worse.
06:13The film builds its terror through uncomfortable conversations, philosophical traps, and the
06:18creeping realization that every exchange is really a power struggle.
06:22I will not accept that you stand there and tell me that you never heard the air that I breathe
06:26by
06:27the hollies, when I know that you have heard creep by Radiohead.
06:31The slower, more intellectual approach helps the movie stand out in a crowded horror landscape,
06:36and set a new precedent for prestige horror. After all, it takes a lot for a movie this terrifying
06:42to earn major awards attention. Although Heretic shares that honor with another
06:53film you may have heard of called…
06:55Number 3. The Substance.
06:57If body horror isn't your thing, take this as a warning to stay very clear of The Substance.
07:03I don't think anybody was really prepared for this whirlwind.
07:09Despite the glowing reviews and a career-best performance from Demi Moore,
07:13it is 100% not for the faint of heart. Or the weak of stomach, we should say.
07:18And yet The Substance also has a lot to say. It's a film about aging, beauty standards,
07:24and the unfair expectations placed on women.
07:26Tell them who your little beauty secret is.
07:33It just shows it all through some of the grossest scenes ever put on film.
07:38If you don't mind not eating for a few days, The Substance is a perfect example of a must-see
07:43modern horror.
07:44She's my most beautiful creation. I have shaped her for success.
07:49Number 2. Weapons.
07:51At 2.17am, every child from Mrs. Grady's class woke up, got out of bed, and walked into the dark.
07:57And we're still thinking about it.
07:59The truth is, is that I want an answer just as bad as all of you.
08:04Live! Live!
08:07Another example of elevated horror, Weapons is full of strong messaging and sharp social critique.
08:13But it's also a damn good scary movie.
08:16The image of all those kids sprinting into the night will haunt us for years.
08:20What do you think it is that she's not telling us? Because those kids walked out of those homes.
08:24No one pulled them out. No one forced them.
08:28Director Zack Kreger proved that you can be scary without undercutting your message,
08:32and did it while setting records at the box office, too.
08:36For anyone paying attention, Weapons is the perfect benchmark for what horror can do in the cinematic
08:41landscape.

09:02Number 1. Sinners.
09:07At the risk of sounding hyperbolic, Sinners feels less like a step forward for horror,
09:15and more like a step forward for filmmaking as a whole. Yes, it has vampires, and yes,
09:21they're terrifying as hell. But arguably, the best parts of the film don't involve the bloodsuckers,
09:26such as that mesmerizing music montage.
09:29It can pierce the veil between life and death. Conjuring spirits from the past.
09:36Somebody take me. And the future.
09:45It's a movie that trusts its audience to stay engaged even when blood isn't spurting across the
09:51screen. Then it rewards that patience with one of the craziest, most cathartic climaxes in recent
09:57memory. So, it's safe to say Sinners is much more than a horror film. It's a true modern classic.
