00:00And for Scotland, 28 years later, a World Cup on film in high definition and the
00:08head coach is the Frenchman Sébastien Mignet who has galvanized this group of
00:13players. Two up top, Shea Adams and the free-scoring Laurence Shanklins.
00:251998 the last time Scotland played in a FIFA World Cup and you have to go back
00:29almost a quarter of a century further for Haiti's previous appearance on this
00:34stage, but the weight is over, the reality is upon them.
00:38Brad Friedel, a member of three World Cup squads with the United States is alongside me.
00:43You know how this feels, the pride must be bubbling to the surface of all those out there.
00:48Absolutely, but they're not thinking about that right now, they're thinking about their battles.
00:52What I'm really interested in seeing is how Bellegarde and Jean-Jacques deal with
00:56Tomini and Ferguson and can Isidore cause Henry and Hanley a lot of problems up front,
01:02because he can be a handful, as anyone who watches the Premier League knows.
01:09They proceed with 38-year-olds in goal for Haiti, so brilliant against Costa Rica in a
01:171-0 qualifying victory, which ultimately took Haiti to this World Cup.
01:23And he can be a little bit erratic too. He has his ups and downs, sometimes he's absolutely magnificent,
01:29other times he costs his team, but he has been the mainstay, the goalkeeper, had an injury of
01:35recent months, but he got himself fit, and here he's playing for his country,
01:40probably going to be his last World Cup, probably only World Cup he gets to play in at 38 years
01:45of age now.
01:48I'm sure that regardless of age, most out there will be thinking, seize the moment,
01:54you never know when it might come again.
01:56Without a doubt, these are special occasions, you heard the loud singing from the crowds in the
02:02National Anthem, impressive. With the throw, takes it back off, and Doak.
02:13There is Jack Hendry, who probably will be more used to the conditions,
02:19the most given the fact that he's had more than a season now in Saudi Arabia with Al Etifak.
02:26Yeah, the weather here is not going to bother him, maybe the four o'clock kickoffs will be
02:30a bit similar. It's a lovely evening tonight, you could play, play three games in a row,
02:35compared to what some of the other teams are going to have to do, what you had to do in
02:39there this afternoon.
02:41You might be able to play three games in a row, I can absolutely assure you, I wouldn't be able
02:45to.
02:45Oh, not at my age, really.
02:49Trooped by Adams, who was trying to find a way through, Shanklin's managed to
02:52force it back to him, there's Robertson again, trying to open things up.
03:00Hickey, Gannon Doak, combining well in these early stages for Scotland.
03:04Gannon Doak, the routine one for the seed.
03:12That was, you see Scotland, they're trying to overload, they're sending Robertson high on the left,
03:17they're sending Hickey high on the left, trying to make
03:19the pace of this Haitian team defend more than attack.
03:26We're getting a little too close to Aaron Hickey.
03:31He's got the knot tonight alongside Wilson Isidore, in the Haiti forward line, ahead of
03:36Dukens-Nazon, the all-time leading goal scorer for Haiti.
03:40There is Sebastian Minier, two years in charge now, openly says his friend said he was crazy to take
03:47the job initially, but he believed that this day would come, and it has.
03:52Begin.
03:54Shanklin's
03:56carried away by the Haitian defence.
04:01Arcus is going to have to come to terms and get some help by Deidson on this
04:04right-hand side for them, left-hand side for Scotland.
04:08See the link-up play with Robertson, McGinn's already starting to
04:13prove a bonus for Scotland.
04:19It is, Yarrow being clung to, so the Haiti have a free-kick and they have a bit of
04:25space as well.
04:31He will like to put himself about tonight, Franzi Pirro.
04:34Yeah, he is a, he's a big, strong lad, and you also have, uh, Nasson, who's a big,
04:39strong lad off the bench as an option.
04:42They don't lack for physicality and they don't lack for athleticism.
05:06More than half a century since Haiti's memory last of the World Cup, and of all the countries
05:11competing here, no team who have been at this tournament before have had to wait longer
05:14for another appearance. And here they come for the first time with Deidson, sized it up, but got it all
05:21wrong.
05:27You'll see when they win the ball, look at the numbers that go forward. You got one,
05:30two, three, four, five. They're not afraid to go forward against anyone.
05:34You'll see that against Scotland. You'll see that against Brazil. It doesn't matter who they play.
05:43It is Brazil next on the agenda for Haiti. Can wait for now, but off to Philadelphia in just under
05:50a week will be some occasion for Haiti supporters because they tend to support Brazil at World
05:59Cups when they've not been present. Oh, I can't see them changing allegiances in that one.
06:12It's Grant Hanley, 34 years old in every single game for Scotland at the last two major tournaments,
06:20the European Championships in 2020 and 2024, collecting it and then delightfully sending it
06:32back towards Robertson again. And it's a decent ball in and the towering header from McTominay.
06:44Really clever link up play again with Robertson and McGinn and look at four in the box.
06:52It's unlucky. Just gets under a little bit. The defender does well to jump with him.
06:58Surprised he didn't contemplate the bicycle kick.
07:02The Haitian player or McTominay? Certainly McTominay. He's the only one who's got that. I think it is
07:08repertoire for sure. We saw that with the sensational goal he scored against Denmark to put Scotland's
07:13place at this World Cup. I think they can wake up now.
07:21The Boston Stadium is packed tonight.
07:39He sent his staff to watch Haiti's win over New Zealand in Fort Lauderdale in Florida.
07:45The park said that any Scottish arrogance about expecting to win this game would have been
07:50washed away by anyone who saw that 4-0 Haiti win. Yeah, scored some really good goals, played well,
07:56possession, countered, couldn't transition both with and without the ball.
08:01I don't think New Zealand expected that.
08:06A couple of places between those two specific nations in the FIFA rankings.
08:15other way by Hanley.
08:22Free kick despite the screams from Ruben Providence.
08:28Here is Ganondoke up the other end for Scotland.
08:31And they are coming to join him, but Ganondoke is trying to make it. McTominay's hit the post.
08:39Placide was beaten. This is what happens every time Haiti plays.
08:45Nice little move. McTominay times his run perfectly.
08:48Has Placide beaten? He can only sit down. Really unlucky. Did everything, right?
08:55Absolutely was beaten. What a really good run. Sharp run by Ganondoke.
09:03Here's Pirro in the game tonight. Struggling with stomach issues.
09:08He had to travel separately from the rest of the team to Boston, but
09:12as they saw him on the training pitch on Friday, the Scotland fans, the heart rate came down a little.
09:18He and McGinn and Robertson, they're the three, the three heartbeats for this team.
09:26What a shame, by the way, there is no Billy Gilmore who. Yeah, a really good player also.
09:31He certainly would have been in the Scotland starting 11 tonight had he not picked up that
09:35quite serious injury against Curacao, one of Scotland's warm-up games.
09:44He is here though. He has flown out to be part of Scotland's fraternity.
09:50Yeah, it's really good. Great, great team spirit. I saw him hobbling off the bus.
09:58I just had to deal with that. It was a smidge short from Arcus.
10:09I was cluttering into Lewis Ferguson who was in the walls again.
10:22Injury. Robertson.
10:34Towards Ganondo. Scotland might feel that he hasn't seen enough of the ball so far, Ben Ganondo.
10:44Ferguson to Hanley.
10:49Forward by the Bologna midfielder Lewis Ferguson towards Shanklin who won the aerial duel at Tapayade.
10:55And then skipping away from any potential problem was Luis Justidsson.
11:03Here is the man who operates on the opposite side, Providence Isidore.
11:10On the shoulder with Hanley.
11:12And he's going down too easy.
11:15I mean, he is a big, strong player.
11:18It's the second time now.
11:20And as you can see,
11:23I mean, they were both hooking each other's arms.
11:28He doesn't need to do that.
11:30He could stay up and battle against
11:32Hendry and Hanley.
11:35He is fifth cap for his country tonight.
11:37Wilson Isidore scored on his full senior international debut against Iceland in March.
11:48Shea Adams who has brought it down a treat.
11:53Ganondoke now.
11:55Last experience.
11:57Adams is there.
11:58And McGinn.
12:00And in for Scotland.
12:08A goal almost three decades in the making.
12:14Scotland are here.
12:16Well, maybe some special words by Steve Clarke at the water break.
12:20The really well-timed run.
12:24And in one we've won situations.
12:26He has very quick feet.
12:30Ducks a little shoulder.
12:32Really good save by Placide at first.
12:35And then really unlucky.
12:37McGinn scuffs his shot.
12:38Deflected in the goal.
12:40This is exactly what Scotland needed.
12:43Haiti was just coming into the game.
12:45They were the ones that were creating the chances.
12:47From Bordeaux in 1998 to Boston in 2026.
12:52That is truly remarkable.
12:54With all the great Scottish players.
12:58They hang fire.
12:59They've got some defending to do.
13:01And they.
13:02Steve Clarke.
13:04Joint record under a single Scotland manager.
13:08With Dennis Law.
13:10Having done the same under Ian McColl many years ago.
13:29Well Haiti had a promising 25 minutes.
13:32They now need to try to regather their thoughts.
13:35They definitely did.
13:37Scotland was wobbling a little bit.
13:38Water break came at a good time.
13:42And they came out.
13:43A little bit of a spark.
13:44We had some good backward and forth.
13:47Good chances on both sides.
13:49Scotland with the all-important goal.
13:52Hero will be one of the aims of this Valgaard delivery.
13:56And the header.
13:57Which is going to pounce away for a throw.
14:01And a Scotland throw.
14:29That's going to try to find a way out.
14:31Belgaard.
14:32Hero.
14:37There's Providence.
14:39But Haiti.
14:41Providence.
14:41Gun spills it.
14:43Hero is there.
14:44And so was Hendry.
14:48And Scotland survive.
14:52Really quick duck of the shoulder.
14:55The opening goal of the game.
15:01Headsen is making things happen when he gets the ball though for Haiti.
15:05Yeah been a real handful.
15:09That's silly.
15:10A bit of hands there from Andy Robinson as well.
15:12It's a free kick for the push on Carlin's Arcus.
15:18And it is a shove in the back.
15:19He didn't need to do it.
15:20Referee standing right there.
15:22And Haiti.
15:23Haiti probably has a slight advantage on attacking set pieces against this Scottish team.
15:38A few set pieces dotted around the Scotland penalty area so far.
15:43This one in from Belgaard.
15:5316 of the Haiti players were born outside of the country.
15:57And off this 26-man squad there are 25 clubs represented from 15 different countries.
16:02They have come from far and wide to be part of this.
16:12Chris Ferguson.
16:15Peter Ganondog.
16:18Oh Ganondog escaping from two.
16:21And they're struggling to keep with him.
16:26He didn't find anybody that was awaiting the pass.
16:30But they come again Scotland.
16:32Hickey.
16:33It's all Shankland.
16:35There's Arcus underneath it.
16:39Scotland finishing strongly.
16:42This is the goal scorer John McGinn.
16:48Final seconds of the half.
16:52Indeed they are the last seconds of the half.
16:55But he's the main man as he has been on many occasions for Scotland.
17:04The good news for Scottish fans is that Scotland have never lost a FIFA World Cup game.
17:10Which they have been leading at half time.
17:12And the lead they have here thanks to that John McGinn goal just before the half hour.
17:21And Friedel former United States goalkeeper went to three World Cups is alongside me.
17:26High in our commentary position at Boston Stadium.
17:31What needs to change then for Haiti in the second half if they are to dismantle Scotland?
17:36They've gotten a lot of numbers in the box.
17:38They have a lot of breaks.
17:39They've had some really good play by Provenance on the left.
17:42By experience on the left.
17:44By Dietz and especially on the right hand side.
17:46It's been that final ball.
17:48That final product.
17:49Whether it's a couple of inches in the second half.
17:53Pick from Elgar.
17:55Which unfortunately falls in line with many of the other
17:57Haiti set pieces tonight.
17:59They haven't quite been as precise as they would have wanted.
18:01Yeah and they might have a little advantage.
18:03A height advantage and a physicality advantage against Scotland in the box.
18:07You just see it goes over there's a you know.
18:11They're both holding each other and that's that's very light.
18:14Very soft to give a penalty.
18:17Team of officials Brad I think immediately agree with you because on we go.
18:31There's gun closing in on a clean sheet as well.
18:33That has not happened for Scotland many times through the years in World Cup games.
18:39In fact they've only kept one clean sheet in their last 16 World Cup matches.
18:43And that was it's Uruguay in 1986.
18:59Great purveyor of your uh your goalkeepers Brad Friedel.
19:03So I'm sure you remember the name Jim Layton of the late 80s.
19:06Of course 1998 he was their starting keeper correct?
19:09He was in 86 when he kept that clean sheet.
19:14It's from Del Croix for Haiti.
19:17And the ball has fallen nicely for McGinn who could and perhaps should have scored again for Scotland.
19:24That is one of the best chances of the whole night.
19:26Yeah it's a decent clearance.
19:28Haiti gets out.
19:30Just a bit unlucky.
19:32McKinzen a great opportunity.
19:33That's a glorious chance to go 2-0 up.
19:37Scotland lived to regret that maybe.
19:40Rovidos for Haiti.
19:43Trying to find the angle.
19:44Did find the angle.
19:47Sidor threw everything at it too.
19:49I don't think he was trying to pass it to the far post.
19:53He was definitely trying to curl it around.
19:54Or maybe a cross shot.
20:01A game that as perhaps you might anticipate with a scoreline like this is.
20:06Beginning to open up a little bit now.
20:09And it will.
20:09And I expect Haiti to make.
20:11At least one probably two more substitutions.
20:15For caution to the wind.
20:16At least the latter moments of it.
20:18If they're still down by a goal.
20:20Brilliantly done by Robertson.
20:30Spins the throw out of Christie.
20:37It's got off with it quickly.
20:45Arcus.
20:47Fast fearless fallback.
20:48Who is making his way forward now.
20:51Joseph's touch.
20:52It nearly came the way of the right back too.
20:55Very good thought.
20:56Good skill.
20:58Good run.
21:00See the layoff.
21:01Very well defended by McTominay.
21:04Coming from midfield to cover into the central defensive area.
21:10This is being taken.
21:11This corner right in front of a.
21:13Very loud section of.
21:15Haitian supporters.
21:16Who are letting.
21:17Jean-Ric de Belgarde know that they are there.
21:19And they are behind this team.
21:23Belgarde's delivery.
21:24Hanley with the towering header for Scotland.
21:27Hasamir.
21:32The ball in from Belgarde.
21:34Which lacked the height.
21:36Hasamir.
21:37Forward clear by Lyndon Dykes.
22:06The better.
22:08Spells the possession of Haiti.
22:09second half this. Adé flipping it back out towards Casimir, seen plenty of the ball since he's come
22:18on, he's trying to wriggle his way past Ryan Christie. Experience, Bellegarde, Jean-Ric de
22:28Bellegarde plows it at Grant Hanley. He's taken back off McTominay, who didn't see Providence coming,
22:37and Providence gets Haiti to corner and they have had a recharge to the battery life. Absolutely,
22:42Providence went over on the right-hand side, Casimir on the left-hand side, causing a lot of
22:47problems, tried to play the corner quick, upsetting the fans that it wasn't allowed. This is a really
22:53good spell by Haiti, starting to create some overloads Chris. And the noise levels have just
23:00gone up a notch as well, I can feel the slight reverberation of the stand that we're in. Yeah,
23:06the Haiti supporters feel like something's coming on.
23:13Moving towards the final 10 minutes, Providence at the Haiti corner,
23:16and then Dykes with a commanding header to clear.
23:19Yeah, good clearance. He's got the need calm heads right now, see this game out, really try to get that
23:27second goal again.
23:28Yeah, not the dance. Casimir was ambitious and it was, what a problem for Gunn.
23:47I think surely now, Brad, we are going to see the strings cut on this game a little bit moving
23:51into the last turn. Yeah, without doubt, Haiti's going to try to go for the equalizing goal. The
23:57interesting bit will be if they get it to see if they continue to keep attacking, because with the
24:02substitutions they've made, that's the only way that they can play.
24:09Actually, I've beaten in their last four against teams from Europe, Haiti. They have to draw off
24:13Italy during that time as well. Last side from the UEFA Confederation to beat them was Spain 13 years ago.
24:26He's trying to work the room, McGinn, nice feet.
24:32He'll be delighted if he has the match winner. Janklin had a rough night. I think the Haitian
24:38defenders really posed a lot of problems for him. They didn't allow him to get a lot of service,
24:42didn't get a lot of crosses in the box around him.
24:45He has given me to have the name I thought. It's a half a rookie of the games.
24:56Oh!
25:11I'd кварти.
25:26the ground was very vocally trying to insinuate he should have the free kick
25:33here's McTominay
25:36but Sonu will still carry them forward up towards Curtis it's going to drift away
25:41from him no substitutions by Steve Clark were to try to clog up the midfield stop
25:45these counter-attacks we can obviously tell that Hades on the on the front foot
25:52it's a fresh legs on the pitch
25:57mentioned earlier that Ben Ganondorf was the youngest player ever to play for
26:01Scotland in a World Cup well that record's already gone with the
26:03introduction of Finlay Curtis off the bench at 19
26:08that says a lot for Scottish football have that quality those ages
26:13it's them in good stead for many years to come
26:17it's the baby tonight as well
26:19because it's what a moment for him
26:21not a bad time to make it
26:37and Angus Gunn was worried best chance of the night very good cross they needed more of those tonight
26:44here I was gonna want that back he had the time he saw where he should head it
26:51just got a little too much on it Gunn would have been beaten
26:56that's the fifth international goal
27:01information off the back of that another Haiti change with Yasin fortune on for
27:06through from Providence
27:10it's going to be the fortune that changes things
27:19it's hominette
27:24taking it again from Christie and then rolling it past Delcoy
27:29we've stuck to his task it was a great run by McTominay really well recovered by Delcoy
27:35it's going to take this throw the Everton defender
27:42overzealous challenge from Linden Dykes which has been penalized
27:47potentially could give Scott with the problem here
27:49yes free kick in a very dangerous area
27:54right through the back
28:02well there is going to be Caribbean chaos if Haiti equalize here
28:06Bell guards for the poor delivery
28:10final ball just not good enough tonight Chris
28:12for Haiti
28:18the seed crushes one forward again in hope more than anything else and it comes at Piro
28:24he did well just to get a shot away as he was stumbling
28:27he did he lost his footing and
28:29just tried to have some acrobatics and get a shot on target which he did
28:33unfortunate for him there was no power in it
28:47oh god
28:49for Joseph
28:52they are very much looking for salvation now Haiti
28:58experience
28:59Casimir
29:00Bell guards
29:04the little flick which again almost carried it through to Piro from his strike partner Lenny Joseph
29:11really nervous defending
29:12right now
29:13I mean they're doing well they're clearing the balls but
29:16they could be keeping a hold of the ball
29:18picking apart
29:19Haiti as they go forward
29:21well McLean's in a bit of trouble here because he was very high with that boot and there was a
29:26an immediate reaction from pretty much every single member of
29:29Haiti's backroom staff and substitutes have all let up
29:33halfway line heroics sealed the deal for Scotland against Denmark back in November
29:46Scotland have won at a World Cup for the first time since 1990
30:08we have him on Saturday and at the World Cup for the first time
30:13we will have to measure that
30:13the events of our summer
30:13all the time
30:13we have over the last of our summer
30:13the days of the day
30:13we have to measure that
