00:04and beyond the game, the ball stays pure. Go ahead, Luis.
00:07Good morning, Pablo. Good morning to our audience.
00:09Today we'll have a special day as a Caribbean neighbor
00:12is making its World Cup debut, Curaçao, later in the day
00:16in just a couple of hours against four-time champion Germany.
00:19We'll have more information after the break, so stay with us.
00:44Welcome to the Beyond the Game, the ball stays pure.
00:46We'll start with last night's results.
00:48We go to Canada where Australia opened their World Cup campaign
00:50with a 2-0 victory over Turkey in Vancouver.
00:53Australia secures a dominant 2-0 victory over Turkey
00:57at BC's Place Stadium in a match defined by defensive discipline
01:02and ruthless finishing.
01:03Nestor Irankunda opened the score in the 27th minute
01:07with a clinical finish after a brilliant football from Paul Ocon-Exler.
01:11Turkey pushed hard for an equalizer controlling possession
01:14and fired 15 shots.
01:16But in the 68th minute, a misplaced Turkish pass fell to Mohamed Ture
01:20who sealed Australia's win with a second goal.
01:23Australia now sits top of Group D, sending a clear message
01:26to their rivals.
01:35We now move to the other host nation, the United States in Boston
01:38where Scotland made history securing a 1-0 win over Haiti.
01:42This is the first win for the country in a World Cup in 36 years.
01:46Boston Stadium was the scene of the exciting match.
01:49Scotland claimed its first World Cup victory since 1990
01:51with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Haiti.
01:54The decisive moment the Scotland's opening match came in the 28th minute
01:59when Haiti's goalkeeper fumbled the ball, allowing veteran John Bignin
02:03to pounce and score the only goal from close range.
02:07Afterwards, Haiti controlled possession in the second half,
02:09but Scotland's defence held firm.
02:11This victory gives Scotland a good chance to advance to the knockouts.
02:15Up next, they face a tough test against Brazil.
02:27And as we were saying before the break,
02:29a Caribbean neighbour Curaçao is making its World Cup debut later today
02:33at 1 p.m. Caracas time facing Germany four-time champions.
02:37It's going to be a beautiful match to see, especially,
02:39in the Caribbean people in Curaçao are excited.
02:42And to learn about this excitement,
02:43let's go with our special on-boy in Curaçao,
02:45Belén de los Santos, for all the details live.
02:47Welcome, Belén.
02:52Hello, Luis.
02:53Exactly as you were saying,
02:55such a great moment to be here in Willensac, Curaçao,
02:58as we are just hours away from the big game.
03:02And this is a World Cup of a lot of firsts for the Caribbean,
03:05because it's the first time that we have two competing nations
03:09from the Caribbean at the tournament.
03:11It's also, as you were saying, the first time for Curaçao itself,
03:15which set a record being the country with the smallest population
03:20to ever classify to a World Cup.
03:23We are talking about a country that nears 160,000 people in the island.
03:29Just to get a picture,
03:30Mexico City has 57 times the amount of population
03:35at the entire island of Curaçao,
03:38and they are so excited to be part of this tournament,
03:42of this game.
03:43Also, a nation that has a very strong feeling for football itself.
03:48Although baseball is the main game,
03:50there are quite a bit of footballers.
03:52And this time, having the national team of Curaçao
03:55coming to this event led by the manager, Dick Advocate,
04:00that has run such an amazing cycle with important figures
04:05like the Vacuna brothers, for example,
04:07Tahit Chong, the one in this team to have been born here in the island.
04:13A team that speaks of national pride
04:16and that has had so much importance in mixing that unity
04:21between the island and the diaspora as well,
04:24reliving and reviving all the national identity for Curaçao
04:29that is now seeing their national teams at play at the World Cup.
04:33The people are so excited to see this.
04:37We were talking to a lot of them tonight and also last night,
04:42and we had some very important statements.
04:45Let's hear about that excitement from the people here in Willowstad.
04:51I think it's going to be difficult, but I don't think we're afraid.
04:55I think we'll be able to do it.
04:56I think nothing's been difficult to get to where we were.
05:01So, yeah, I think as long as we believe we can achieve.
05:05The feeling is so good, so proud of ourselves,
05:09proud of our country, proud of Curaçao.
05:13Why are you so proud right now?
05:15Because Curaçao is a small island,
05:19but our talent is so good.
05:25If you could send a message to the players right now,
05:30what would you say to them?
05:32What is everyone here hoping that they do tomorrow?
05:35The message is believe in yourself no matter what the result is,
05:40but be proud of Curaçao.
05:46Be proud is one of these things that keep coming and keep appearing here in Willowstad.
05:52Small island, but big.
05:54That is the idea right now.
05:56And we are heading to the square where the big screens are going to be on.
06:00We are seeing people that are coming about.
06:03Everyone keeps on showing up, asking where everyone is going to be meeting.
06:08There's a lot of people coming out starting the day.
06:10It's only a few hours away from that big debut with Germany.
06:14Luis, an important match, a difficult match,
06:17but the island is confident and so happy to be part of this World Cup.
06:23So we'll have more throughout the day.
06:25We'll be following what everyone is seeing and we'll be definitely following
06:28what the national team of Curaçao will be doing against Germany for Group E today.
06:34Luis, I go back to you now.
06:38As we know, football is a beautiful magical sport.
06:41Anything can happen and this will be a great surprise for the Caribbean,
06:45for the whole people of Curaçao if they are able to upset and against all odds win against Germany,
06:52which will be something wonderful to see, no doubt.
06:54But before we conclude this segment, we want to share some of the highlights
06:58of our special coverage of football's biggest events.
07:01In this excerpt, renowned sports authorities Victor Hugo Morales links sport
07:05to broader social realities reflecting on migration, football and the human stories
07:10behind the United States national team.
07:12Let's listen.
07:15If the current president had been in office,
07:19or the current ICE,
07:21or all the repression against immigrants,
07:25or if it had been this carnage that's been unfolding in the United States for some time now,
07:34the parents of these players, who today bring joy to football fans in the United States
07:39by helping the U.S. team perform well in the World Cup,
07:42might well have been among the victims.
07:47This is a world of migrants.
07:49And we at Telesur are going to strongly defend that powerful idea of a world where people move from places
07:55that have been left with little, because they've been swindled and robbed,
08:00and head to the most powerful economic centers to seek the future that those big countries owe them.
08:07As a result of this,
08:10every minute someone is being born whose origins are in Africa or other parts of the world,
08:15and not in the country that will grant them their nationality.
08:20And that is all for this edition of Beyond the Game,
08:22the Bulls to explore.
08:23We're going to be back with more information on the story shaping this World Cup,
08:25and of course we're going to pay attention to the scoring of today's game,
08:29especially that one,
08:30Germany,
08:30Curaçao is going to be very important for us, especially here in the Caribbean.
08:34We go back to you, Pablo.
08:35Thank you, Luis.
08:36We will be back with you in a coming news brief.
08:38And like this, we have come to the end of this news brief.
