00:00Welcome back to Ireland in View, planning a trip to Dublin.
00:04Here are some useful tips and some things to watch out for.
00:07There are 1,000 more bedrooms in Dublin in 2026,
00:11which means more choice and hopefully lower prices.
00:14What better time to plan a visit?
00:16Let's see if we can show you how to navigate the city like a local.
00:19Let's start by telling you the most obvious thing but least understood.
00:23The first thing you don't need in Dublin is a rental car.
00:26It's a walkable city and for €2 a time, the bus and tram line, the Lewis, will get you around.
00:32Some buses run all night.
00:33Getting from the airport to the city, Aircoach or Dublin bus do a great service for under €10.
00:39So, number one, you don't need a car in Dublin.
00:41By the way, if you want more factual information on how best to visit Ireland, please subscribe and follow.
00:47We publish up-to-date videos every week. Thank you.
00:51Number two, taxis are metered.
00:52The meter should only be switched on when you are in the car and not before.
00:57But be aware, the rate changes with time of day and at weekends.
01:02Passenger numbers also make a difference.
01:04Use Google Maps on your phone with your hotel in the search and track your journey, especially if it's long.
01:09If it differs from your phone route, you should query it with the driver.
01:13Some drivers will give you a fixed price for long journeys, for example, intercity, so you know where you stand.
01:21Taxis will be marked with a large yellow marker on each side.
01:25Uber will be a taxi also.
01:27Free Now is a taxi app on your phone for hailing cabs, which can be useful.
01:31Links, as always, in the description.
01:33If you are in a taxi, you can pay by credit or debit card, despite what some drivers might try
01:40and tell you.
01:40Cash is king no more.
01:42By law, they must accept cards.
01:45Number three, like any large city anywhere, never take chances with your mobile phone or purse.
01:50Unfortunately, in crowded places, pickpockets can be operating.
01:54Keep all bags closed and valuables in view at all times.
01:59Number four, the best way to see the city if time is short is the hop-on-hop-off bus.
02:04The best ones and the best fun we have found to be the Do Dublin Tour, part of Dublin Bus.
02:10A bus every 20 minutes and a driver who is a cross between a stand-up comedian and a city
02:15historian.
02:16You will enjoy it.
02:17Number five, eating out in Dublin, the etiquette.
02:21Never assume tables are available without booking.
02:23There are some great restaurants in Dublin and new ones coming on every year.
02:27From Chinese to Japanese to Thai to traditional Irish restaurants.
02:32Many good restaurants like the famous Trocadero on St. Andrew's Street, which we highly recommend.
02:37Need booked particularly for Friday and Saturday nights?
02:41Generally, now booking online is the usual method.
02:44Others, it's come when you're hungry and it's more casual, tipping usually 5% to 10% for good service.
02:51Number six, getting around the city on public transport.
02:54As we said earlier, public transport in Dublin is good.
02:56Never assume you need a car.
02:59It's a walkable city and easy to get around.
03:01But if you do need to use the bus in Lewis, the tram system, it's pretty simple.
03:06A leap card is handy and cheaper, but for visitors it's hardly worthwhile.
03:11Cash and coinage is the preferred payment on buses.
03:14They cannot take notes or give change.
03:16The good news is a lot of this change goes to various charities, so it's not swallowed up by corporate
03:22greed.
03:22The Lewis will take notes and give change on the platform ticket machines.
03:26Punch in your destination and the fare change and ticket will drop into the basket.
03:31You can even hire bicycles at various locations.
03:35Links again in the description.
03:36By the way, when getting off the bus, the age-old custom of thanking the bus driver still exists.
03:42Don't forget that one.
03:43It's important.
03:45Number seven, never assume a three-star hotel will have five-star facilities.
03:50Irish hotels are rated three, four, and five-star.
03:53Three up to five with rising facilities where five will have a higher room rate.
03:57Never book into a three-star and expect five-star quality.
04:00You will get what you pay for.
04:01Some three-star hotels are extremely good.
04:04All Irish hotels and all buildings are smoke-free.
04:07If you smoke cigarettes in a hotel room, they can charge you up to a 250 euro fee.
04:14Be aware of that one.
04:15All rooms are fitted with smoke alarms and it's easy to catch you out.
04:19Here is some useful information.
04:21Most hotels have family rooms for up to five people.
04:24And if you arrive off the Red Eye but can't check in until 3 p.m.,
04:28they will store and look after your luggage.
04:30So you can explore the city.
04:32Number eight, never ignore your round.
04:36Bar etiquette, how to annoy people.
04:38If you meet strangers in a bar and they offer to buy you your favorite drink,
04:41never drop out of buying them one back.
04:43Even if you are leaving, always make sure if someone has bought you your favorite drink
04:47to thank their hospitality, buy them one back.
04:50It's our friendliness and hospitality and it's the way we do things always in Ireland.
04:55Our advice for travelers is never travel with huge cases unless for a wedding.
04:59Dublin has shops where you will get anything you need.
05:03A light plastic map to rainproof you and a few layers is all you need.
05:07We have Arnott's, Brown Thomas, Penny's here in Dublin.
05:10And they go from the most expensive to the cheaper ranges of clothing.
05:14There are also shops selling hiking gear and anything else you may want.
05:18A carry-on bag is all we ever use when traveling.
05:20Never go to Temple Bar.
05:22Well, no, not really.
05:23Just be aware that the price of drink is high.
05:26Even great crack with some plastic patty as it always is.
05:29With a five-minute walk to South William Street or off Grafton Street prices will be much lower
05:35and you won't feel ripped off.
05:37And in the suburbs of, say, Klontarf, even lower again.
05:41Just so you are aware.
05:43This is a silly one, but a serious one.
05:46Crossing the street and the city always look right.
05:48As we drive on the left, traffic will be coming at you on the right,
05:52not the left where you might be used to.
05:54A simple one, but we don't want our visitors to get hurt or worse, killed.
05:58That's nearly it for this one.
06:00We hope we have helped you and enticed you to come to Dublin,
06:03our home in Capital City.
06:05We have loads more from all over Ireland on the playlist.
06:09Take care.
06:09Thank you for watching Sláinte.
