00:00Imagine being in a locked room, afraid, hiding, and then, without warning, the entire building begins to shake.
00:09A sound like a violent, rushing wind fills every corner, and then fire appears.
00:16Not on the walls, not on the floor, on people.
00:22Tongues of flame resting on every single person in that room.
00:26This is not a metaphor. This is not symbolic language.
00:31This actually happened.
00:33And in the next few minutes, you are going to discover why that single day changed all of human history
00:39forever.
00:41To understand what happened, you need to know what Pentecost was before that day.
00:47Pentecost, from the Greek word for 50, was one of the three great Jewish festivals.
00:53Fifty days after Passover, Jewish pilgrims flooded into Jerusalem from every nation under the sun.
00:59The city would have been packed.
01:02Now, the disciples of Jesus had just watched their teacher be crucified.
01:06And then, impossibly, they watched him rise from the dead and ascend into heaven.
01:13Before he left, he made them one specific promise.
01:16Do not love Jerusalem.
01:18Wait for the gift my father promised.
01:21First, the 120 gatherer, Acts 1-2.
01:25One hundred and twenty believers gathered in that upper room, praying and waiting for ten days.
01:32And then, it came.
01:34Acts 2-2 says a sound like a violent rushing wind came from heaven and filled the whole house.
01:40Suddenly, what looked like tongues of fire appeared and rested on each person.
01:44They were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in languages they had never learned.
01:50The crowd's reaction.
01:52Outside in Jerusalem, devout Jews from over 15 different nations, Parthians, Mines, Elamites, Egyptians, Romans,
02:00heard the sound and came rushing to see what was happening.
02:02And here is the moment that still astonishes scholars today.
02:07Every single person in that crowd heard the disciples speaking in their own native language.
02:12A man from Rome heard them in Latin.
02:14A man from Egypt heard them in his dialect.
02:17Everyone in their own tongue.
02:19Peter, the same man who had denied Jesus three times just 50 days earlier,
02:26stood up and preached without notes, without preparation, in front of thousands.
02:31He declared that Jesus, whom they had crucified, was both Lord and Messiah.
02:36That the very festivals they were celebrating had always pointed to him.
02:39That the fire and wind had been prophesied by Joel 700 years earlier.
02:46The crowd was cut to the heart.
02:49The response.
02:50Brothers, what shall we do?
02:53They cried.
02:54And on that single day, in one afternoon,
02:573,000 people were baptized and added to the church.
03:01The movement that the Roman Empire would spend 300 years trying to destroy
03:07began not with an army, not with wealth, not with political power,
03:13but with a handful of frightened people in a room waiting on God.
03:18And the hidden detail.
03:20Look carefully at Acts 2.42.
03:23After the 3,000 were baptized, they devoted themselves to four things.
03:28The apostles' teaching, fellowship, the breaking of bread, and prayer.
03:33This is not a list of religious activities.
03:36This is a blueprint.
03:38God did not just send fire to get attention.
03:41He sent the Spirit to build a community.
03:43A new kind of people who would carry His presence into every corner of the earth.
03:49What started that day has never stopped.
03:52The lesson of Pentecost is this.
03:54The Holy Spirit does not come to make you feel good.
03:57He comes to make you effective.
04:00Peter went from a man who could not even admit to knowing Jesus in front of a servant girl
04:05to a man who preached in front of thousands without fear.
04:08The only thing that changed was the presence of God inside him.
04:13That same Spirit is available to every believer today.
04:17Which person in this story do you relate to most?
04:20The disciples who waited in faith?
04:22The confused crowd who came running?
04:25Or Peter who found courage he never had before?
