00:05Life is an adventure. It's magical. I always wanted to do adventures.
00:151957. Crystal phoned me and said, how would you like to go around the world in a Land Rover?
00:20I said, ha ha ha ha. And he said, no, no, no, I'm serious. Yeah, let's go.
00:26In those days, it was just raw nature. It was daunting just trying to survive.
00:33The grizzly torqued. It was our home.
00:36This Land Rover symbolizes adventure, like a magic carpet to get into magical places.
00:42This was just so thrilling for us to see these large mammals roaming wildly.
00:48This was not a safe country at all. You could just as easily be killed pretty much anywhere they were.
00:54I don't think in my entire life I've ever felt so carefree.
01:00Bob and Bristol were coming from a very different era.
01:03It was difficult for men to talk about the feelings that they had.
01:07And how are you going to communicate emotion if you're not allowed to?
01:11Well, the arts.
01:14Bristol, he saw film work as his creative medium.
01:18And I think he just fell under the spell of it.
01:20Bob would be sketching while driving.
01:23I tried to see the landscapes we were going through, and I tried to record that in my sketchbooks.
01:28Bateman became the preeminent wildlife artist of all time.
01:32I've never lost sleep worrying about the state of the planet.
01:36Worrying is useless.
01:38Taking action is useful.
01:40Anytime we're making a public call for support on an issue, Bob would be right there.
01:46Bristol served as director of ecological reserves for the province of British Columbia.
01:51We were kindred spirits, and we still are.
01:53Together, I think they're just an intrepid duo.
01:57By some chance, they found one another.
01:59Ended up having this incredible friendship that spanned eight decades now.
