Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is reportedly easing his criticism of U.S. President Donald Trump ahead of the upcoming G7 Summit, where crucial trade negotiations are expected to dominate discussions. With the future of the USMCA trade agreement under review and Trump signaling he may not renew the pact, Canada faces mounting economic pressure. As more than 70% of Canadian exports depend on the U.S. market, Carney appears focused on protecting trade ties rather than escalating political tensions.

00:00President Trump, in meeting settings, of course, we want to know his perspective.
00:06One always wants to know the perspective of the President of the United States.
00:09But in meetings, these are real exchanges.
00:12That was the case in Kananaskis.
00:14It's been the case in APEC and ASEAN and other meetings I've been with him.
00:20And he listens as well as speaks.
00:23And so these are real exchanges.
00:25And certainly the G7 is taking place at a critical time for the world, geopolitically, geo-strategically, given the wars
00:33that are ongoing, plus economically and a host of issues, present and future, including the future of AI.
00:42Hi there, Prime Minister.
00:43I'm Diane Campbell with CBC News.
00:45Yes.
00:45I do have a couple questions about the bridge, if you don't mind.
00:49So my question to you is that state Republicans in Michigan are saying that they want to get half the
00:56tolls as soon as the bridge opens.
00:58Is that on the table?
01:01Look, Canada paid for the bridge.
01:07We ensured that half of the construction work and the activity associated with it was shared with Michigan.
01:18And the benefits, of course, of the bridge will be shared by all.
01:22And a yes or no question.
01:25Do you believe that...
01:27There are no questions.
01:28Sorry.
01:28Do you believe that the situation with the bridge is a way for Trump to pressure Canada in negotiations?
01:37No.
01:37Look, the issues that have been raised have been raised by the U.S. administration as a whole and are
01:46being addressed.
01:47We have not had a direct conversation, President and I, about this issue.
01:52So I wouldn't, as I said, I said a moment ago and I said yesterday, this is not a big
01:59drama.
02:00We're working through, you take time to get things right.
02:03It's a major bi-national project and we want to launch it in the right way, in a collaborative way.
02:11And those are the discussions we're having.
02:13There are separate discussions, a previous question, related to Kuzma and our trade side, which are ongoing.
02:24We made some progress last week in Washington, Minister LeBlanc did, on some technical issues.
02:30There's a meeting next week at the G7, him and his counterpart, Ambassador Greer, with our chief negotiator, Janice Charette.
02:39And we look to continue to move forward on those fronts.
02:42But I would, I would distinguish, I would distinguish the two.
02:46You know, the Canadian-American relationship, there are always countless issues between us.
02:52From the security side to specific infrastructure to the trade side.
02:56And it's a NATO ally, number one.
03:00Secondly, regionally, and I'm going to use that term with a capital R,
03:04because it is a very large region from, you know, from the Balkans through to the Middle East,
03:10to the Caucasus and beyond, is one of the most important strategic partners or powers in that region.
03:22And so we have been deepening the relationship.
03:27It's early days in deepening that relationship.
03:31And I will be in Turkey, as you know, next month for the NATO summit and possibly again, or likely
03:39again, later in the year.
03:41And so we're in a process of scoping out the deepening of that relationship, yes.
03:48And following up on your approach to Turkey, actually, because we have time, a question for that.
03:54Tomorrow is the response deadline for the parliamentary petition presented by a liberal MP, Sima Akan,
04:00which calls for extending work permits for over 7,000 Turkish earthquake survivors here in Canada.
04:06Will your government commit to extending these temporary measures to provide these taxpaying, grocery shopping families
04:14with clarity and fairness before their permit expires?
04:21I will look at it. I have 24 hours to make a decision on it.
04:25It's not something that was immediately on my radar.
04:28But thank you for the question and bringing it to my attention. Thank you.
04:31Thank you. That concludes today's press conference.
04:32That concludes the conference.
04:33All right. There you go. Thank you.
04:36Thank you all. Thanks for coming.
