Transcript
00:19Welcome to Match of the Day, the first of a weekly series coming to you every Saturday
00:23on BBC2. As you can hear, we're in Beetleville for this Liverpool versus Arsenal match.
00:29If we can have a look at the Liverpool side, we notice that the champions are missing two of the
00:34team that won the title last season.
00:36Ian St John not recovered yet from appendicitis, Ralph Arrowsmith still out with a leg injury.
00:42So Liverpool rather depleted from their championship team, but what about Arsenal?
00:47Many people think that this could be Arsenal's year, so let's have a look at their team.
00:51We see one new man in the side, Don Howe, the former England right-back, signed from West Bromwich Albion
00:58at the end of last season.
01:05And so Liverpool start the 1964-65 season, defending their championship.
01:16Beautiful conditions, the ground in lovely condition, the weather fine, the ground full and the cop in great form.
01:24Now Stevenson, and here's Hunt, he's a good spearhead of this Liverpool attack.
01:29The question, Milne, out to Callaghan and already Liverpool slipping into the championship gear.
01:38Play a field for a free kick and Mr. Harley's given it.
01:41Free kick to Liverpool, the game's going on, but the referee's blown his whistle,
01:45but nobody can hear a thing in this cauldron, which is Anfield Road, Liverpool.
01:49Fantastic thing, none of this matters at all.
01:55And as no, McCulloch hasn't realised, the game's been stopped, and Easton does realise it.
02:03This is Callaghan, a near England player, this boy.
02:08Out to Thompson, the great star of the England team in Brazil.
02:12Oh, and that's it by Howe.
02:19And that shows what the cop thinks of that tackle.
02:29Stevenson calling Thompson, maybe for a short run.
02:31Arsenal have now brought ten men back in defence.
02:36Five minutes, got no score.
02:38Oh, lovely move, and up comes Moran.
02:41And a corner.
02:46Easton to take the free kick for Arsenal.
02:49Liverpool's starting to have ten men back in defence.
02:54Well-thought-out move.
02:58Up to Stevenson.
03:03Oh, you're a beautiful ball to Joe Baker.
03:06Now, Strong.
03:08Oh, running the trouble.
03:09Baker has moved forward.
03:10It's a two ball.
03:17Hunt.
03:19Out to Thompson.
03:20Watch this boy's speed.
03:22Brilliant wingman.
03:25This is Hunt.
03:26Hammer-Aid.
03:28Up comes Chisnall.
03:31That was Sampsono got in the way.
03:34Armstrong too.
03:35How?
03:38Is the football if Armstrong's got the speed?
03:40Yes, he has.
03:42It's Yates who's been drawn from the middle.
03:48Stevenson to Chisnall, who's playing it deep.
03:51Leaving Wallace and Hunter to the spearheads.
03:53And Hunter's onside.
03:54Well onside.
03:56Wallace in the middle.
03:58So to is Thompson.
04:04Out to Armstrong.
04:09Now Milne.
04:09The man whose job it is to control the middle of the field to Callaghan.
04:16Come Liverpool again.
04:19Milne.
04:22Taken beautifully by Wallace.
04:28Liverpool's throw.
04:29Let Juer know that he was safely behind him.
04:40Wallace.
04:42Thompson.
04:48Is it too high for Callaghan?
04:51No.
04:52Hunt.
04:53It's a goal!
05:02There's Roger Hunt.
05:03Put Liverpool one goal to mil in the lead after 11 minutes play.
05:10That's your fault.
05:12Arsenal.
05:13Armstrong.
05:15Some very, very strong now.
05:17Could well be troubling the players, but they're not showing it.
05:20Strong finding base.
05:21And he could equalise.
05:22He has the no!
05:32Now, Strong, he's got a lot of room, but all the avenues to go are blocked unless you can
05:36draw someone out.
05:39Thompson taking over.
05:40Now that's fantastic.
05:45To Hunt.
05:50And from having no forwards, Liverpool now have got six of them.
05:57Callaghan.
05:58And the whistle's going for half-time.
06:00Yes, the whistle goes for half-time with Liverpool after the superb first half, leading Arsenal
06:05by one goal to nil.
06:07The all-white strip who had to start the second half, trailing one goal to nil, and they must
06:12be rather bewildered at what to do against this Liverpool team, because certainly anybody
06:17who wants to hit British football should be watching this Liverpool side this afternoon.
06:21They're in great league.
06:24Right.
06:25Arsenal on the attack.
06:26Steaden.
06:26Now to Strong.
06:30And Strong now to Baker.
06:32But Liverpool, if it's tackles like demons, whenever the Redford Danger signal comes out.
06:39That's Fern.
06:40Now to Thompson.
06:42What an afternoon he's giving Don Howe, the Arsenal's new full-back.
06:46Up to Wallace.
06:49Now, leave it on the ground.
06:51Liverpool can do it.
06:56Moran.
07:00Wallace, and now Hunt, and Wallace moving inside.
07:06This could be a dangerous move.
07:09There's Wallace.
07:12Oh-ho, what a mix-up in the attack and defense.
07:15Well played, Simpson.
07:22Anderson now to Easton.
07:25Strong.
07:29Now Baker.
07:31It's Armstrong.
07:32Nice football by Arsenal.
07:34It moves strong.
07:34And a fine save by Lawrence.
07:37That's the best Arsenal move they've made in the whole of the match.
07:48Chisnall.
07:49Chisnall.
07:50And Wallace.
07:52What a fine this boy is.
07:54To Hunt, back to Chisnall.
07:58No danger for Arsenal.
08:00It's Thompson.
08:02And a corner to Liverpool.
08:18Thompson at the corner for Liverpool.
08:20Thompson at the corner for Liverpool.
08:47Howe, Easton, being challenged now by the Liverpool centre forward, Schisdorf, that's for
08:54Snadden, a good one to Armstrong, Yates is Armstrong again, is Thompson back for the
09:02Liverpool defence, and in Chisdorf, beautiful football, Thompson to Callaghan, Thompson coming
09:11out of the right wing, here he is again, back to Callaghan, this is Chisdorf, Pennell beating
09:28him, Baker, big ball to Strong, now to Anderson, Strong again, Easton, a good return, a fine
09:45move and a lovely goal by Strong, a lovely goal, Jeff Strong, the Arsenal inside right, has scored
10:00the first goal for Arsenal, so Arsenal now trail two goals to one, and that is how the Liverpool
10:09crowd rose to that splendidly engineered goal, finding Jeff Strong, the man who got the Arsenal
10:17goal, that's a beautiful ball to Armstrong, Baker, and it's a goal, Baker has in line, oh, what
10:30a beautiful goal, glorious goal by Baker, oh, this has changed the confliction, there's Joe
10:46Baker, the Arsenal centre forward is equalised, oh, and Wally Barnes said at half time, he expected
10:52Arsenal to come more into the game in the second half, I'm sure he didn't expect them to get
10:55two goals in a couple of minutes, that's Easton, Easton to Baker, Easton moving forward for the
11:05return pass, it's a beautiful ball to Anderson, and now Easton again, lovely football by Arsenal,
11:09Arsenal, and in comes, outside right, Armstrong did a wonderful chance, well it was saved, I thought
11:16he pulled it too high, but it was saved, it's a corner, corner on the Arsenal right, I think
11:25that was a good move, and a black cat is running on the far side, there it is, a black
11:31cat, no,
11:35now, now it's a cat, I wonder which side it supports, Arsenal or Liverpool,
11:50referee holding up the game while we, at this speed merchant, it's going over to have a
11:56well with Jim Fennell, I think, the Arsenal goalkeeper, now he's decided he's not going to be an Arsenal fan,
12:06oh, missed him, right, they've started, show must go on, cats or no cats?
12:25and here's, Strong, fine effort by Strong,
12:36that's Baker, he wouldn't recognise his Arsenal side from the team that was given the run around in the first
12:41half,
12:43Armstrong deciding to try his luck on this wing, to Easton,
12:48a lovely ball to Anderson, and it's Baker, just robbed by the legs of Moran and Yates,
13:00corner to Arsenal, I think Milne going to take it, Yates I notice has gone up the tall Liverpool centre
13:07half,
13:07watch for him, watch for him, number five, there he goes, that's the man who collided with Muir,
13:20Easton, Easton, running Anderson, now it's Baker,
13:2915 minutes left for play, this electrifying game, two goals each, Strong,
13:40Stephenson to Moran,
13:46Liverpool defence getting itself into a bit of a bother, now Howe, Howe into Easton,
13:55to the outside left, Anderson, after Sneddon, that wasn't far over the top,
14:03and it's two goals each, a splendid game of football, Moran,
14:11Oh, Yates could only have been a whisker away from it, it's a corner,
14:22well there's been enough in this match, for the fans to talk about for weeks,
14:28both these teams have mid-week matches, Arsenal Tuesday, home to Sheffield Wednesday,
14:33Liverpool away to Leeds on Wednesday, Callaghan with the corner, there's big run, Yates,
14:41Simpson getting it away to Anderson for Arsenal, now Milne, Arsenal got everyone in their own half,
14:49Liverpool trying to pile the pressure on again, it's Chisnall, and Bernal anticipating it beautifully,
14:59finding Anderson,
15:03Lions were flagging for afar, Mr. Harley waving play on, as Liverpool are in possession,
15:07and it's Gallaghan, nine seconds of the game now, it's Wallace,
15:15it's there, Wallace has scored!
15:23Oh, what an ending!
15:32What an ending to a magnificent match, Gordon Wallop is round inside left,
15:39seeing his chance for everybody on the hop, and has shot his second goal, his side's third,
15:46time at it on for a few, very few stoppages, as Armstrong takes the corner kick,
15:52goes strong, and the whistle is gone, I think, yes, the whistle is gone!
15:57Liverpool have won a magnificent match, by three goals to two,
16:03the flag can wave in triumph, this is a perfect advertisement for football,
16:08splendid game between two, splendid sides, and Liverpool have beaten Arsenal, three goals to two.
