Elizabeth (Pamela Franklin) is not convinced that her sister's death was a suicide. But since the police refuse to investigate, Elizabeth decides to enroll in her sister's school and look into the matter herself. She learns there have been a number of other student suicides and begins hearing whispers that the school has a dark, satanic secret. Knowing too much, Elizabeth and her friends Roberta (Kate Jackson) and Jody (Cheryl Stoppelmoor) must now escape the grip of the occult.

00:01:51Operator, yes, collect call, please.
00:01:54Collect to Elizabeth Sayers, Los Angeles.
00:01:56KL5-8937.
00:02:04Martha Sayers.
00:02:05Oh, please, hurry.
00:02:06Please.
00:02:10No.
00:02:21She has to be there.
00:02:24She told me she'd be there.
00:02:26She has to.
00:02:30Oh!
00:02:32Oh!
00:02:37Oh!
00:02:45Oh!
00:02:52Oh, my God.
00:03:16Oh, my God.
00:03:53She ain't home.
00:04:00She told me she'd be here.
00:04:03You a sister?
00:04:06Yes.
00:04:09She just went to the store.
00:04:13Asked me to give you a key.
00:04:16She's a key.
00:04:18She's a key.
00:04:29She's a key.
00:04:34She's a key.
00:04:42She's a key.
00:04:52She's a key.
00:04:58She's a key.
00:05:01Come on.
00:05:03Come on.
00:05:04Come on.
00:05:06Come on.
00:05:26Oh, my God.
00:05:46Oh, my God.
00:06:07Oh, my God.
00:06:29John?
00:06:31What's going on?
00:06:32It's your sister, Miss Sayers.
00:06:34She's gone crazy in there.
00:06:36Screamed and locked the door.
00:06:44I tried all the doors and windows.
00:06:46They're all locked.
00:06:47Excuse me, please.
00:06:52Martha?
00:06:54Martha, it's me, Elizabeth.
00:06:57Open the door, please.
00:07:00Can you break it in?
00:07:22But you can't really argue with the coroner's report, Miss Sayers.
00:07:26Lieutenant, my sister did not commit suicide.
00:07:29She had no reason to kill herself.
00:07:31She was happier than she's been in years.
00:07:33But no one could have gotten into the house.
00:07:36The doors and the windows were all locked from the inside.
00:07:39She did not commit suicide.
00:07:41Why would she catch a plane from Massachusetts, hire a car at the airport, and drive all the way to
00:07:46my house to kill herself?
00:07:50Well, there's no rationale with suicide, Miss Sayers.
00:07:52I understand how upset you are, but if you...
00:07:54I don't understand anything.
00:07:56If she was going to kill herself, there were worse times, like when our parents died or when we were
00:08:00separated by different schools, hundreds of miles apart, but not now.
00:08:04But you did admit that she was a melancholy girl.
00:08:07That she was lonely.
00:08:09Well, you hardly saw her during the past few years.
00:08:11Then ask her friends at school.
00:08:15We did.
00:08:16Did you try her ex-roommate, Lucy Denbrow?
00:08:20Do you really think she would make that much difference?
00:08:22Yes. She was her roommate for two years. She knows Martha.
00:08:27Okay, Miss Sayers.
00:08:29We went to Miss Lucy Denbrow in Massachusetts, and to some of the other classmates at the academy, and the
00:08:34headmistress.
00:08:36No one could give us any further information.
00:08:38I can't accept that.
00:08:40There just isn't enough evidence for us to pursue it any further.
00:08:45I'm sorry.
00:08:47But the case is closed.
00:08:50Not for me it isn't.
00:09:05I just, uh, I couldn't fly into the funeral.
00:09:08I mean, there was no warning. None.
00:09:10I told the police when they called it.
00:09:12Everything was fine.
00:09:13I mean, just great.
00:09:14Martha was busy and working.
00:09:15So was I.
00:09:17If you don't like the sherry, I can run up for some vodka.
00:09:19No, no, no. Please don't worry about it. I don't drink much.
00:09:22I just grabbed this little place right after graduation.
00:09:25I sure hope my guardian seems for the loot.
00:09:27Lucy, did Martha keep a diary or anything like that?
00:09:31Oh, you know her better than that.
00:09:32No memories for her. Life was now.
00:09:35Well, something was going very wrong. It had to be.
00:09:38Nothing I knew of.
00:09:39You sure you wouldn't like some vodka?
00:09:41No, thank you.
00:09:43She wasn't upset or anxious or anything?
00:09:46Oh, anxious maybe.
00:09:47About our graduation and you and her getting your own place and finally being together.
00:09:52Nothing else.
00:09:53Like what?
00:09:55Someone. Something at the school maybe.
00:09:59It has to be something there.
00:10:00No.
00:10:01It had to be something that happened at the academy.
00:10:04I would know if there was anything else.
00:10:05No, I'm telling you no.
00:10:07I'm going there.
00:10:08Well, you won't find out anything. Nothing.
00:10:10Nothing.
00:10:11I've got to try.
00:10:13You won't tell anyone you saw me.
00:10:15Or that you talked to me, promised me.
00:10:17Do you understand and no one?
00:10:21I'm...
00:10:23I'm sorry.
00:10:25Martha's death and everything, I...
00:10:28Please forgive me.
00:10:30Yes, of course.
00:10:54No, don't be afraid.
00:10:54No, I'll be afraid.
00:10:56No, it was before the disney happened not that
00:10:59I was mad at God's door.
00:10:59I'm sorry.
00:11:00He was the one I really needed to find.
00:11:04He found his darkness.
00:11:05He went to my launa.
00:12:11Hi. I'm Roberta Lockhart. We're the welcoming committee from your class. Now, the dragon lady had us memorize a short
00:12:16welcoming speech. I'm afraid it'll make you throw up.
00:12:19I'm Elizabeth Morgan. We know. We've been expecting it. This is Debbie Jones. Hi. And that's Jody Keller. Hi. Jody,
00:12:27why don't you get the bag? Okay.
00:12:29Okay. The dragon lady wanted us to show you around. To see that you were fed, housed, setter, made to
00:12:39feel like one of us within 15 minutes of your arrival. How are we doing? I've been at home already.
00:12:44That's good. The dragon lady said... Does the lady have another name? Headmistress. She is a bad painter, a worse
00:12:51sculptress, and a lousy musician.
00:12:54She's a perfect headmistress for an academy of fine arts. Those who can do, those who can't teach. But this
00:13:00place has a marvelous reputation.
00:13:02Hey, listen. A lot of the professors are super. Really super. Jody's got a crush on the head of the
00:13:08fine arts department.
00:13:09Ha, ha, ha. We all do. It's a school hobby. Uh-huh. If you like that sort of thing.
00:13:17Pouligny Montrachet, 69. Ha, ha. She does not speak French. She just reads labels very well.
00:13:28To our new friend. Take a big swallow, because you're going to need it for the dragon lady.
00:13:33Cheers.
00:13:37We here at Salem Academy feel that girls of good breeding are more easily groomed into young ladies of culture
00:13:45and refinement.
00:13:47We do have our traditions here. But then I suppose, like most traditions, they're meant to be broken.
00:13:54Not all of them.
00:13:56Oh, good. I'm so pleased to hear you say that.
00:14:00I don't know. It seems to me that so many young people today, especially in the arts,
00:14:06tend to have little regard for traditional techniques, the classic forms.
00:14:13Picasso was a realist painter before he was an impressionist.
00:14:16It's a lovely reference, my dear.
00:14:18Now, this academy has its own tradition.
00:14:23Under different names, it has been here, in this very place, for over 300 years.
00:14:31Well, Elizabeth, I realize that you must be very tired after your long trip.
00:14:36But since you enrolled after the quarter began, I think it would be wise for you to start your classes
00:14:41today.
00:14:42Thank you for accepting me.
00:14:44Only because you qualify.
00:14:46Now, I want you to have one of these.
00:14:48Since we're some distance from the main power lines, we often have quite erratic and exasperating electrical failures.
00:14:56There's nothing to be frightened of. You just keep that in your room.
00:14:59Usually, the blackouts last only a short time.
00:15:02Now, here's your curriculum, and this is your list of classes for today.
00:15:07Professor Clamp at Graphic and Fine Arts, Professor Delacroix, Behavioral Psychology.
00:15:11Yes, I think you'll find them very interesting. Both of them, very interesting.
00:15:15Good luck, Elizabeth.
00:15:17I hope you'll find Salem Academy as rewarding as I did when I was a student here.
00:15:31Mrs. Williams speaking.
00:15:47Yes, the new girl just arrived.
00:16:09So, if illusion and reality are different, they're also very much the same.
00:16:19What we think we see is as real as what we actually see.
00:16:25Example, optical illusion.
00:16:31How many see the squares coming out from the canvas, projecting out?
00:16:34Hands.
00:16:36Right.
00:16:37How many see the opposite, the boxes going into the canvas?
00:16:41Okay.
00:16:42Now, what I'm going to do, on signal, I'll clap my hands, you'll blink your eyes, and then stare right
00:16:47into the drawing.
00:16:48And those of you who see the reverse of the image you just saw, raise your hands.
00:16:52All right, ready?
00:16:53Blink.
00:16:54Okay, now stare at that canvas.
00:17:01Hands.
00:17:03Yeah.
00:17:06Good.
00:17:08Good.
00:17:09Everybody but our new classmate, who was obviously concentrating.
00:17:13Sorry, I guess I wasn't concentrating.
00:17:15No, I think you were concentrating on something, and therefore locked into your mind the very first image you saw.
00:17:20You have to let your mind hang loose.
00:17:23But I did blink my eyes.
00:17:24Without your mind.
00:17:26The artist has to be free to see things in different ways.
00:17:30To dare to see things unlike anyone who's ever seen them before.
00:17:34Now let's look at some of our own masterpieces.
00:17:39We have Roberta's landscape, which is still rather obvious, but I'm sure she'll see more as she develops.
00:17:53And Debbie's gloomy view.
00:17:57I hope she brightens things up a bit when she goes back to work.
00:18:00Or when she finds a new boyfriend.
00:18:04All right, just remember, everything is illusion and reality.
00:18:09Except for the grade you get at the end of the term.
00:18:12Until then, condemn nothing.
00:18:14Embrace everything.
00:18:16And hang loose.
00:18:17Okay?
00:18:18See you tonight.
00:18:19All right.
00:18:49You're the only one who does.
00:18:51The girl in it, she's very pretty.
00:18:53Is she a student here?
00:18:54Was.
00:18:56Martha Sayers.
00:18:58She's dead now.
00:19:00Were you very close?
00:19:03Not really.
00:19:05I just thought that she...
00:19:08What?
00:19:10Fitted into that room.
00:19:12You know?
00:19:14You ready for round two?
00:19:15Yeah, what's our next class?
00:19:17Rats.
00:19:21You'll see that the eating cycle of the rodents will become more intense.
00:19:25They'll work harder and fight harder to get food that sometimes will be where they expect it and sometimes it
00:19:33will not.
00:19:37We'll teach them that the food is always behind the red door.
00:19:42And when they have that well learned, we'll take the food away and put it behind the white door.
00:19:49And when they learn that, we'll switch again.
00:19:53And again.
00:19:55And again.
00:19:59To what end, Roberta?
00:20:06To frustrated.
00:20:08Uh, drive it crazy.
00:20:09Why would I want to do that?
00:20:13Debbie.
00:20:17I don't know.
00:20:19I don't know.
00:20:19Of course not.
00:20:20I might as well ask the rodents as asked you.
00:20:30Elizabeth, what's the purpose of this experiment?
00:20:34To make them passive.
00:20:36And why would we want to do that?
00:20:44To show that a mind can be broken to any level by manipulation and locked on that level.
00:20:52To make it believe what we want.
00:20:54To act as we wish.
00:21:03Dismissed.
00:21:13So then, when you step on its tail, it squeaks.
00:21:16But then when you step on its head, it doesn't squeak.
00:21:21Can you tell me the point at that tail?
00:21:23On the other hand, don't, don't forget to close the white door when you, when you.
00:21:43It's still very hot.
00:21:44The doctor should be here soon.
00:21:45Debbie?
00:21:46We should have told the headmistress to notify our family.
00:21:49No, we can't.
00:21:50Why not?
00:21:52Doesn't have any parents.
00:21:53She's only got a guardian.
00:21:54He's somewhere in Europe.
00:21:55Oh.
00:22:07Hi.
00:22:08Debbie, the doctor will be here soon.
00:22:12What?
00:22:14What for?
00:22:17I, I don't need a doctor.
00:22:20Have you had this before?
00:22:22Had what?
00:22:23Don't you remember coming out of the psych class and suddenly screaming?
00:22:26Like you were in some terrible pain.
00:22:30I don't feel any pain.
00:22:32Hey, what time is it?
00:22:346.30.
00:22:35Pa, I want to go wash my face.
00:22:37I don't want to be late for Dr. Clampett's wine party.
00:22:49I'm going to get some water.
00:22:59But you can't just dismiss it.
00:23:00We saw it happen.
00:23:01I'm not just dismissing it.
00:23:03I just hate to feed something like this on such flimsy evidence.
00:23:06Look, we're not asking you to judge Professor Delacroix.
00:23:09Just talk to him about his class.
00:23:11About why he's so hard on Debbie.
00:23:13Then you draw your own conclusions.
00:23:15And what if I draw none?
00:23:16Then we'll have to drop it.
00:23:18Unless...
00:23:18Unless what?
00:23:19Unless something else happens.
00:23:22Well, let's just wait and see if something else happens.
00:23:24If it ever does.
00:23:25Where's Jody?
00:23:26She promised to come.
00:23:27She's still doing office duty for the dragon.
00:23:29Hmm.
00:23:37You needn't watch the clock, my dear.
00:23:39I'll let you know when your time is up.
00:23:41Yes, ma'am.
00:23:48How is Debbie?
00:23:50She's fine now.
00:23:57Jody, have you been aware of any unusual conduct in your teachers or your classmates?
00:24:04I mean, other than Debbie's outburst?
00:24:07No, ma'am.
00:24:13If that's the doctor...
00:24:19If that's the doctor, tell him I still want him to come over.
00:24:24Salem Academy.
00:24:25Yes, ma'am.
00:24:27Yes, sir.
00:24:30Yes.
00:24:32Yes, sir.
00:24:35It's the Boston police.
00:24:49Lucy Devereaux...
00:24:53Committed suicide.
00:25:01It's two of us.
00:25:03Yes, sir.
00:25:08Yes, sir.
00:25:08Yes, sir.
00:25:15Yes, sir.
00:25:20What the heck?
00:25:21Yes, sir?
00:25:21Yes, sir.
00:25:21Yes, sir.
00:25:25Yes, sir.
00:25:32No, not yourintage4001-4202.
00:25:39Let's go.
00:26:04Oh, my God.
00:26:56Debbie, are you awake?
00:27:03You see no, I couldn't sleep. I hope you don't mind. No, I don't mind. I
00:27:11Didn't know her but that girl's suicide really shook me up Lucy
00:27:18Lucy was nice. She was really nice at the party. You said that makes two of us
00:27:27Martha Martha Sayers
00:27:29She committed suicide, too
00:27:31Isn't that the girl in your painting?
00:27:35What do you think made them do it?
00:27:40I don't know
00:27:45It's like
00:27:48They were rats in Delacroix's maze
00:27:53Maybe we all are
00:27:57I wish those lights would come on again
00:28:04I meant what I said about your painting. I really do like it
00:28:08But that Martha girl seems scared to death in it
00:28:11I paint what I feel
00:28:14What is she so scared of?
00:28:18I don't know
00:28:22Was it that room? Something in it maybe?
00:28:26Where is that room Debbie?
00:28:28It's so strange. It's so cold and dark. It looks like a dungeon
00:28:35It's like it was a memory
00:28:40It's like it was a memory
00:28:41It's like it was a room I saw a long long time ago
00:28:43Do you know where?
00:28:51Here. Here. Here. I'm almost sure. I am sure. It was right here in this building
00:29:00Well, I better let you get some sleep. I'll see you tomorrow
00:29:04Good night

00:36:34Nothing, nothing. I didn't have anything to do with it.
00:36:37With what?
00:36:39Nothing. Now get out of my room.
00:36:44What's going on?
00:36:45I told her that I'd found the room in her painting.
00:36:48It's in the cellar of this building.
00:36:50So?
00:36:51Well, she's terrified of something in the painting.
00:36:54Or something she thinks is in that painting.
00:36:56Look, Elizabeth, she's a very emotional girl. You saw that?
00:36:59And there's some creepy legend about a bunch of people
00:37:01who were killed in a cellar around here a long time ago.
00:37:04How is it supposed to have happened?
00:37:06Well, they say during the Salem witch trials,
00:37:08there were eight young women who were accused of witchcraft
00:37:10and hung in one of the cellars.
00:37:12Yeah, but look, all these old houses have cellars.
00:37:15It could have been any one of them.
00:37:16I'm going to bed.
00:37:17It's a good idea for all of us.
00:37:18But, uh, there was someone in that room tonight.
00:37:21I saw him.
00:37:23For God's sake, don't tell Debbie.
00:37:49Some rodents break under the pressure, sooner or others later.
00:37:53But without exception, all are driven to various forms of disorientation.
00:37:57Some kind of random, wild action that humans might call psychotic behavior.
00:38:08Now, the subjects are in abject terror.
00:38:12Let's examine what they're afraid of.
00:38:16Roberta.
00:38:20Well, it looks like they're more mad than scared to me.
00:38:23It's their terror that motivates their anger.
00:38:30The same is true of human beings.
00:38:35We're all apt to react more strongly to terror
00:38:40than any other emotion.
00:38:42To react violently, even to kill, out of terror.
00:38:50But don't let this experiment fool you.
00:38:53Humans don't show their terror, as do rodents, running and screeching.
00:38:59Sometimes terror can break down all the fibers of resistance so that...
00:39:04So that a complete passivity takes over.
00:39:09And human reaction, though passive, is most dangerous in this state of terror.
00:39:18Elizabeth, what have you gotten out of this experiment so far?
00:39:21Well, I'm not really sure.
00:39:22Do you want us to recognize the terror element or the motivation to violence?
00:39:28Jodi.
00:39:30Beats me. I'm more lost than the rodents are.
00:39:40I wonder if Debbie is taking this experiment as lightly as you do.
00:39:54We'll continue tomorrow.
00:39:55Come on.
00:40:04Boy, is he weird.
00:40:05Yeah, and he's weirder every day, too.
00:40:07Somebody really ought to talk to the dragon lady about him.
00:40:09See you later.
00:40:10Yeah.
00:40:11I wonder what he meant about Debbie.
00:40:12Beats me.
00:40:15Roberta.
00:40:15Hmm?
00:40:17I think it was Professor Delacroix that I saw in the cellar last night.
00:40:20What makes you think it was him?
00:40:22That basement, the wine cellar, that room.
00:40:25It's all like his rat maze.
00:40:28Maybe we'd better look at it again.
00:40:29We could go down there tonight after everybody's gone to sleep.
00:40:32What if I'm wrong?
00:40:34That's not what scares me.
00:40:37What if you're right?
00:40:55Oh, boy.
00:41:00объяс me like it.
00:41:04Before we go.
00:41:04In the corner of familiarity try again the swiftly.
00:41:06And reasons.
00:41:10We should go.
00:41:10I'm a mother.
00:41:10I love it.
00:41:15Mr.
00:41:17Let's go.
00:41:49Let's go.
00:42:23Roberta?
00:42:24Yeah?
00:42:25You ready?
00:42:53You ready?
00:43:06You ever been down here before?
00:43:09Once.
00:43:09We looked for props to use in the play.
00:43:11It's back here.
00:43:12Let's go.
00:43:16Let's go.
00:43:21Let's go.
00:43:21Let's go.
00:43:26Let's go.
00:43:30Let's go.
00:43:45Let's go.
00:43:58I never saw a door like that before.
00:44:01That's how they made them.
00:44:02Hundreds of years ago.
00:44:06Come on.
00:44:08Come on.
00:44:11Come on.
00:44:15Let's go.
00:44:16Let's go.
00:44:20Come on.
00:44:22Come on.
00:44:24Come on.
00:44:35Let's go.
00:44:36Let's go.
00:44:46Oh, my God.
00:44:47Oh, my God.
00:45:07Oh, my God.
00:45:11Oh, what's the meaning of this after hours? You know the rules.
00:45:21Debbie's dead.
00:45:24What?
00:45:26We found her body in the cellar.
00:45:28But how?
00:45:30We don't know.
00:45:32It looks like she committed suicide.
00:45:35Oh.
00:45:39Oh, dear God.
00:45:46I'll have to call the sheriff.
00:46:02Hello, this is Mrs. Williams, the headmistress at Salem Academy.
00:46:05We need you right away. Please hurry.
00:46:10Yes.
00:46:16Hello.
00:46:17They'll locate the sheriff as quickly as possible.
00:46:20What do we do about Debbie?
00:46:21I'll ask Dr. Clamford to lock the cellar door and wait for the sheriff.
00:46:24And I want you to promise me to say nothing to the rest of the girls
00:46:27until after the sheriff arrives.
00:46:29I don't want to panic in the middle of the night.
00:46:31Yes, ma'am.
00:46:39Well, Debbie.
00:46:42And Lucy Dambrao and that Sayers girl?
00:46:45Oh, come on, Roberta. You can't believe they all committed suicide.
00:46:50Well, it would be one hell of a coincidence.
00:46:51It sure would. Three girls from the same school?
00:46:54No, they were murdered.
00:46:57Or at least driven to do what they did.
00:47:01You mean like the rats in the maze?
00:47:03I'd bet my life on it.
00:47:05What do you know about Delacroix?
00:47:06Not much.
00:47:09But his personnel fire reports are in those cabinets.
00:47:12The dragon lady keeps them on everybody.
00:47:14Let's take a look.
00:47:15Come on.
00:47:24Wait a minute.
00:47:27It's gone.
00:47:29All right.
00:47:31Now let's look for Lucy Dambrao and Martha Sayers.
00:47:33What for?
00:47:34Just a hunch.
00:47:40No file on Martha Sayers.
00:47:42Yeah, Lucy Dambrao's gone too.
00:47:45Maybe she took them out after they died.
00:47:48Let's look for Debbie Jones.
00:47:55It's gone.
00:47:57But the headmistress didn't know she was dead until just now.
00:48:01She wouldn't take them out of here just to hide them someplace else.
00:48:05That doesn't make any sense.
00:48:07She probably doesn't even know they're gone.
00:48:11Let's check out Delacroix's lab.
00:48:13Shouldn't we wait for the sheriff?
00:48:15It might be too late.
00:48:17Okay.
00:48:19I'll tell you one thing.
00:48:20I'm checking out of here first thing in the morning.
00:48:24I know what's the matter.
00:48:27I've just thought of another one of your great coincidences.
00:48:30Something all three girls had in common.
00:48:32What?
00:48:33They all of them had no one to help them.
00:48:35All their parents are dead.
00:48:37Elizabeth so were mine, but you don't see me killing myself over it.
00:48:40Come on.
00:49:24That's what's a good morning, mate.
00:49:25Let's see you next time.
00:49:25I'm in the background.
00:49:25I'm in the background.
00:49:25See you next time.
00:49:27Come on.
00:49:28Bye.
00:49:28Bye.
00:49:30Good morning, dear.
00:49:34Good morning, um.
00:49:40I'm happy to see you next time.
00:49:43Deborah Sayers, you were right, but look.
00:50:00You're all dead.
00:50:02They were slaughtered.
00:50:11I know why you came here, and I know who sent you.
00:50:17But it won't stop me. It won't silence me.
00:50:22It killed them the way it wants to kill me.
00:50:26Who killed them?
00:50:27It wasn't a person. You know it wasn't a person.
00:50:32Not me.
00:50:34I won't give in, laden!
00:51:31It's a person.
00:51:32Don't they have to cry?atellite!
00:51:34He's gone crazy. You think somebody's after him.
00:51:36Where is he now?
00:51:38He ran toward the woods.
00:51:39I'll try to stop.
00:51:40No, he's got a gun.
00:51:41Wait for the police. They're on their way.
00:51:43Mrs. Williams told me. I took care of Debbie.
00:51:46Now, look, if they see him with a gun, they might shoot him.
00:51:48Maybe you'll listen to me.
00:51:49You two wait here and don't scare the other girls.
00:51:51Wait right here.
00:52:11Come on.
00:52:40Come on.
00:53:13Come on.
00:53:22Joni! Joni, help me!
00:53:26Joni!
00:53:29Help me!
00:53:38Help me!
00:54:09Help me!
00:54:11Please!
00:54:13I'll never get back again!
00:54:15Please!
00:54:16Please let me out!
00:54:18Please let me out!
00:54:18I won't tell!
00:54:19Please let me out!
00:54:20I won't tell!
00:54:22I won't do!
00:54:34I'm worried about Dr. Clampett.
00:54:36Don't worry about him.
00:54:37He can take care of himself.
00:54:39He's something else.
00:54:40I've never met anybody like him.
00:54:42You never will.
00:54:44For all of us in school,
00:54:46and especially those of us without parents,
00:54:49he's fulfilled a very special need.
00:54:51We can't just stay here and do nothing.
00:54:54We're doing exactly what he told us to do.
00:54:57I always do that.
00:54:59Sounds to me like you're in love.
00:55:04Maybe.
00:55:05Very special kind of love.
00:55:10See, when I first came to the academy,
00:55:11I was really lost.
00:55:14He gave me confidence in myself.
00:55:17He gave me a belief in my own...
00:55:21Ability?
00:55:22I was thinking of the word power.
00:55:25Power?
00:55:25To do what?
00:55:26Not that kind of power.
00:55:28Power to live.
00:55:29Power to never feel vulnerable again.
00:55:30Never feel like your life is right on the edge of being wiped out.
00:55:34And if it were, nobody would care.
00:55:35Nobody would give a damn.
00:55:37He gave you all that?
00:55:39And more.
00:55:41He can't help you if you fight him.
00:55:43He can't help you if you resist him.
00:55:45Who wants to fight him?
00:55:47Right now, I could use all the help I can get.
00:55:51Well, I guess it was easier for you.
00:55:52You had parents and a family.
00:55:58No, all I had was a sister.
00:56:01She's gone now.
00:56:04My real name is Sayers.
00:56:07Martha Sayers was my sister.
00:56:10You see, I never really believed that she committed suicide.
00:56:12That's why I came here.
00:56:14When she was here, Dr. Clampett tried to help her.
00:56:17She wouldn't listen to him.
00:56:18You know, I think we're getting very close to finding out what really happened to her.
00:56:22And Lucy.
00:56:24And Debbie.
00:56:28I hope so, Elizabeth.
00:56:31I really do.
00:56:36I couldn't find him. He got away.
00:56:37The police?
00:56:38I don't know what's keeping them, but he could come back here looking for you two.
00:56:42Maybe he always knew that Elizabeth was Martha Sayers' sister.
00:56:46I'm sorry. I should have told you before. I just didn't know who to trust.
00:56:49I understand.
00:56:52I don't want you here or in your rooms.
00:56:54It's the first place he'd look.
00:56:56Up to my classroom.
00:56:57Lock the doors, draw the blinds, and don't let anyone in.
00:57:35Oh, no. I'll get the lamp.
00:57:38Oh, my God.
00:58:12it would be best to clear the girls out of here for the night why what are you

01:02:08Where have you been?
01:02:09I've been looking over.
01:02:10Oh, he's dead.
01:02:11What?
01:02:12In my car.
01:02:12I found him in my car.
01:02:13Where are the police?
01:02:14What's happened to them?
01:02:15Come on.
01:02:16We'll call them again.
01:02:22Mrs. Williams?
01:02:24Mrs. Williams, Professor Delacroix's dead.
01:02:26He's been murdered.
01:02:27Good head.
01:02:28Mistress isn't here right now.
01:02:29She told me to wait for her.
01:02:32She's gonna punish me.
01:02:34I know she is.
01:02:35But she's wrong.
01:02:37It's a lie.
01:02:38Somebody told her a lie about me.
01:02:40I wasn't in that room.
01:02:42I would never go down there.
01:02:44What's wrong with that?
01:02:45I don't know.
01:02:45Did you tell her?
01:02:46I bet you were the ones who told her I went down to that room.
01:02:49Don't forget her.
01:02:50Get the police.
01:02:53Hey, what are you doing?
01:02:54You can't use that phone if Miss Abigail doesn't let anybody use that phone.
01:02:58Operator?
01:02:59Operator?
01:02:59I can't get anybody.
01:03:04Phones must be out too.
01:03:06Everybody's gone.
01:03:06I saw them leave.
01:03:08What are you talking about?
01:03:09All the buses.
01:03:10They were headed toward town.
01:03:12But I think we're the only ones here.
01:03:14You better get out of this office.
01:03:16Miss Abigail will give you demerits if she catches you here.
01:03:20Where's your car?
01:03:21The keys are gone.
01:03:22Somebody took them.
01:03:24Look, we could walk to the highway and hitch a ride into town.
01:03:26No, that's a long way in the dark.
01:03:28It's better than staying here with her.
01:03:32Yeah, and whoever killed Professor Delacroix.
01:03:37I wish we had a gun or something.
01:03:39Did she keep one?
01:03:41Let's find out.
01:03:43What are you doing?
01:03:45Miss Abigail will throw you out of school.
01:03:48She'll be back any...
01:03:49Wait a minute.
01:03:50There's one in the basement.
01:03:51When I was down there looking for props, there was one in a steel cabinet in the basement.
01:03:54Are you sure?
01:03:55Yeah, one of the maintenance men kept it there, I think.
01:03:58A gun and a couple of rifles.
01:04:00No, you can't go down there.
01:04:01No, you can't go down there.
01:04:03That's why I'm in trouble.
01:04:04Miss Abigail doesn't let anybody go down there.
01:04:07Okay, what do you say?
01:04:08Is it the highway or do we try for the gun?
01:04:12Let's get the gun.
01:04:13No, please, please don't go down there.
01:04:16She'll think I sensed you.
01:04:17Please don't go down there.
01:04:19Please.
01:04:19Listen, you just stay here.
01:04:21And we'll tell her that you didn't have anything to do with it, okay?
01:04:26Okay.
01:04:27You tell her I was never in that room.
01:04:28I won't tell her any damn thing.
01:04:30You please.
01:04:30You just stay put.
01:04:31Okay.
01:04:34But he'll find out.
01:04:36Miss Abigail will tell him.
01:04:39She always tells him everything.
01:04:56I'm sick.
01:04:58Where is it?
01:04:58On the wall.
01:05:05There's a key taped to the top of it.
01:05:09I got it.
01:05:21The rifles are gone.
01:05:23The revolver?
01:05:24I don't know.
01:05:25I'll look.
01:05:34It's empty.
01:05:35Hold it.
01:05:41You know how to use that thing?
01:05:43Yeah.
01:05:43I was brought up on a farm.
01:05:44My father had these around all the time.
01:05:50Come on.
01:05:50Let's get out of here.
01:05:51It could be one of the girls.
01:05:52We've got to see.
01:05:54Okay.
01:05:56Walk to one side in case I have to use this thing.
01:06:13Let's get to see.
01:06:32Let's get to see.
01:06:35I can't see.
01:06:38There's a light.
01:07:00We've waited for you, Elizabeth.
01:07:07Look around you.
01:07:10Eight of my girls died here.
01:07:13Eight, all unwanted, like you, like all of them.
01:07:18I have waited too long.
01:07:21Now I have found eight to take their place.
01:07:25And like them, abandoned once again.
01:07:33It's no coincidence that we don't have families, Elizabeth.
01:07:35He wanted it that way.
01:07:38It has to be that way.
01:07:41Jodie, Roberta, who do you think he is?
01:07:44We know.
01:07:47Malleus Maleficum, the hammer of witches.
01:07:51Some call him Satan.
01:07:56I welcome what man rejects.
01:07:59I beckon what man despises.
01:08:03I forgive what man will not.
01:08:06You don't believe that.
01:08:08That he's Satan.
01:08:15None of you can really believe that.
01:08:17They believe what they must.
01:08:22Tonight they will sacrifice their mortal souls.
01:08:27Willingly.
01:08:29Hear where it started.
01:08:31And they will return with me.
01:08:33You're crazy.
01:08:36Listen to me.
01:08:37I don't know what kind of a hold he has on you.
01:08:40But he's killed Delacroix and Debbie.
01:08:43We know, Elizabeth.
01:08:47Come with me willingly.
01:08:51Your sister would not.
01:08:53No Lucy Dembrough.
01:08:56Don't listen to him.
01:08:58Look, there are eight of us against his one.
01:08:59You've got to get out of here before it's too late.
01:09:01For God's sake!
01:09:03For his sake or mine?
01:09:06They've already made their choice.
01:09:24Come.
01:09:25No!
01:09:36We shall meet when I have the eighth.
