24:18The bundle was brought out and placed in Seraphine's arms. The room went absolutely silent.
24:22It was a small, soft, pale worm. Barely moving. A common earthworm wrapped in royal linen.
24:29The Dragon King's face did something complicated.
24:32Aldric looked as though the floor had dropped out from under him.
24:34Seraphine didn't understand. She was reaching for the bundle, her face still opening and expectant.

24:42What is this? She whispered.
24:44Where is my dragon? This isn't mine! Someone has switched them! Someone switched my child! This isn't-
24:51Aldric said. His voice was flat and terrible.

24:55Then, just as she had done the first time, Seraphine's gaze found me across the room.
25:00You did this! She said. I know you did this!
25:03I stepped back. One small step. Instinctive. Nobody in the room was ready for what happened next.
25:09Seraphine moved fast. She had a hand around my throat before anyone reached her. And she had a sword from
25:14the nearest guard's belt before anyone knew she'd taken it. She pressed the blade on my neck. She had lost
25:19her mind entirely. Her voice shook with it.
25:21Tell me what you did. I left you alone this life. I left you alone and you still came after
25:28me. What did you do to my child? Why won't you just let me have this?
25:32Nobody else understood what she meant.
25:34Selene went white.
25:36Seraphine, put the blade down. Rink is three years old. She hasn't done anything.
25:41You don't understand! Seraphine's grip tightened.
25:44She's done this to me before! She ruined everything before! And now she's done it again! She won't stop until

26:15then, as I was leaving, she had said something else.

26:24You are a true dragon. You have always been one. But your dragon blood was sealed at birth. It is
26:30locked in your heart. And the seal can only be broken one of two ways.
26:34The first is to wait until you come of age. The second is to break it open yourself.
26:39Something vast was on my chest. It rose through the wound. It filled my ribs, my throat, my skull. I
26:46opened my mouth and what came out was not a scream. It was a dragon's roar. It tore through the
26:52wound. It clapped the thunder. I felt my body leaving the ground.
26:55I felt myself expanding into something enormous. Something with wings and scales and weight. And I circled the wall twice.
27:03Enormous and gold and real. And then I came back down.
27:06When I returned to my small human shape, the wound was gone. The room stared at me.
27:11It shifted. It weren't shifted. She's a true dragon.
27:15She's been a true dragon this whole time. I knew she wasn't ordinary.
27:19The dragonkin has an heir. We have an heir.
27:22The rumor erupted. Seraphine stood completely still in the middle of it. Staring at me.
27:30She said. I was always one. I told her. I was one in my first life too. There were two
27:35ways to unlock my blood. The first was to reach adulthood. The second was for my heart seal to be
27:40broken by force.
27:41I looked at the sword she was still holding. You never had any patience. That's why you'll never be a
27:45dragon's mother.
27:47Before Seraphine could raise the sword again, it was over. Several people moved at once. She died there in the
27:52hall.
27:53The small worm she had carried for three years did not outlive her for long. Within a few years, it
27:58was gone too.
