Everyone out here stressing over a QB taking a scheduled day off at Falcons OTAs needs to dial it back. Andy and Randy break down why there is no real quarterback competition in Atlanta right now, and why it might not even start until deep into August. Plus, why a quarterback battle usually means your team is in deep trouble anyway.

00:00Let's hear from Kevin Stefanski.
00:01Obviously, more activity going on up there at Flowery Branch.
00:05Mandatory minicamp doesn't start until next week.
00:07And I think that's when, you know, I guess we'll get more answers about stuff then.
00:10But here he is talking about Michael Penix's timetable once more.
00:14I don't have that, you know, in front of me today,
00:16other than to say he's hitting every milestone that he's supposed to hit.
00:20Been in constant communication with our medical team and Mike.
00:23And I think he's doing everything he can do.
00:28And certainly when he may want to do more,
00:31we have to hold him back from certain things potentially.
00:34But nothing, not going to put any time frames out there just yet.
00:38Just going to focus on what's in front of him.
00:40Yeah, look, and that's been the line all along.
00:42Andy, what is this?
00:45What time is it right up there?
00:47What are they doing up there?
00:48OTAs, right?
00:49OTAs, yeah.
00:49Okay.
00:50Which I think stands for Organized Team Activity.
00:52Yeah, okay.
00:53I'm just curious because when Michael Penix was sitting out yesterday
00:56and everything like that, it was.
00:57Scheduled day off.
00:58Yeah, scheduled day off.
00:59And I was like, I got some tweets about that.
01:01I was like, why is he having a day off?
01:03It's OT freaking A's one.
01:05They all have the day off.
01:05He's six months.
01:06Pretty much.
01:07He's six months out of, is he six months out of surgery?
01:11Yeah, pretty, yeah.
01:12Yeah, in November, yeah.
01:13Yeah, yeah.
01:14Seven.
01:14Like, I just think, I didn't get the, like,
01:16it's my 20-year-old-day, Randy.
01:18Michael Penix, what did he say to me?
01:21He said, let me read it real quick.
01:22Because he was basically saying that, why does he need a day off?
01:25All right, it's a competition.
01:27Nobody's ever won a competition in the spring.
01:30Not now, never.
01:31Not now, ever, Andy.
01:33No, not now.
01:33All right, it's a day off in the spring.
01:35The competition hasn't started yet.
01:36Do you know that there's a possibility that he won't be ready for training camp?
01:39Now, then the competition would end.
01:40But that's what I'm saying.
01:42There's still a possibility that he won't be ready to play,
01:45be ready to go full go in July.
01:48That is true.
01:49What about that?
01:50Entirely possible.
01:50What about that?
01:51But did you tell me he got a day off yesterday?
01:52Come on, man.
01:53I do like that.
01:53Come on, man.
01:55Alex Van Pelt, the quarterback coach, did say, he was like,
01:58the competition begins when Michael Penix gets back.
02:00And that's what I was looking on this cut sheet.
02:02I was looking at the cut sheet.
02:04I was like, oh, because I saw the tweet of him saying that.
02:07It's like, yeah, it's not a competition.
02:09Not yet.
02:10Not yet.
02:11It's not.
02:11And it might not be a competition until August, maybe.
02:14Because we don't know when Michael's going to be cleared.
02:16Yeah.
02:17They also did say they want to decide with a couple weeks left in training camp.
02:20That makes sense.
02:21If it doesn't start until training camp starts,
02:23and they want it to be done by then,
02:25the competition's only going to last two weeks.
02:28Exactly.
02:28Because we don't even know if Michael's going to be cleared.
02:31And if Michael's not cleared, then there is no competition.
02:33There is none.
02:34There's none.
02:35And so, I mean, the reckless speculation of the,
02:38is he going to be in 11-on-11?
02:39Now, if he does 11-on-11 next week in minicamp,
02:43it still means nothing.
02:45Yes.
02:46It still means nothing.
02:47Correct.
02:47Yes.
02:48To you.
02:51And to me.
02:52And certainly to them.
02:54Although it would be, you know, fine.
02:55I guess it was like a little mile marker checked off
02:57that he was able to do a little bit more.
02:59But if he doesn't,
03:00it doesn't mean that he is not going to be ready for the competition.
03:03It does not mean.
03:03If he does,
03:04it doesn't mean that he's going to be ready for the competition.
03:06Because it's different from being cleared to go in there with full pads.
03:09I know they don't tackle the quarterback,
03:11but it's different.
03:12The speed and tempo is a lot different.
03:15It's true.
03:16But this is what the summer is.
03:20This is where we're at.
03:21Every single quote,
03:22every single thing,
03:23it's all going to be...
03:25That's why I don't know if you were here when I asked Joe this or not.
03:27I was like,
03:28Joe,
03:28is this competition going to be fun to cover,
03:31or is it going to suck?
03:32And Joe,
03:33you know,
03:33Joe's a media guy.
03:34Joe's like,
03:34this is going to be great.
03:35This is going to be the best thing ever.
03:36And I was like,
03:36ah,
03:36yeah,
03:37it's going to suck.
03:37No,
03:37it's not.
03:38Quarterback competitions suck in the NFL.
03:41They suck.
03:41All right.
03:41They really,
03:42really do because all you're sitting there doing is counting reps and who went with who
03:45and how many times the ball was on the ground and all this.
03:48And it means you don't know who your quarterback is.
03:50Most important.
03:51If you have a quarterback competition in the NFL,
03:54you probably don't have a good quarterback.
03:56And maybe they'll end up being a really good quarterback in this situation,
03:59but yeah,
04:00no one wants quarterback competition.
04:01Nobody wants that crap.
04:02I got a question because I know we were talking about the Miles Garrett thing yesterday,
04:06right?
04:06Yeah.
04:07Did Jared first just Debo that man's jersey?
04:09I think so.
04:11Wow.
04:11That's what it seems like he did.
04:13Damn.
04:13Yeah.
04:13He just started wearing number eight in practice and that's Dylan Gabriel's number.
04:17I know.
04:17When I saw the eight.
04:18At least it was.
04:19Correction.
04:19When I saw the clip of him wearing eight,
04:23I was like,
04:23hold on.
04:24Did Dylan Gabriel already give his jersey up?
04:26And I was like,
04:28No.
04:29No.
04:29He came and took that man's jersey.
04:31Did you see Dylan Gabriel's comment on it?
04:33No.
04:34Oh,
04:34it was kind of sad.
04:36Oh,
04:36what?
04:36Yeah.
04:36He got,
04:37he got punked.
04:38Oh,
04:38he got straight punked.
04:39He's like,
04:39I guess that's his now.
04:41No,
04:42he didn't.
04:42Pretty much.
04:44Yeah.
04:46I mean,
04:47you know,
04:48probably a nicer way to go about it,
04:49but at the end of the day,
04:51it's third string quarterback.
04:52Yeah.
04:53He might not even be on the team.
04:54Yeah.
04:54I'm going to go ahead and get ahead of this thing.
04:56And number eight's mine.
04:58Yeah.
04:58I wanted to be gay.
04:59And it looked like he probably didn't give no money for it.
05:01Like it's money.
05:02It's money.
05:03Pretty clearly.
05:04He didn't give any money for it.
05:06My number punk.
05:07Well,
05:08I think Jared versus probably in a little bit of a bad mood,
05:10just having been traded from a Superbowl contender.
05:14So,
05:15you know,
05:15anybody standing in his way,
05:17and maybe that's good news for the Browns.
05:18Maybe he's going to be doing that to,
05:19to tackles all season in the way to the quarterback.
05:22But yeah,
05:22I don't think he was pretty grumpy.
05:24I think upon arrival in Cleveland,
05:26I don't think he was going to be like,
05:28cool.
05:29Yeah.
05:31And he gets to save like 30,
05:33probably about 25 more percent of his money.
05:35And I'm sure that's nice too,
05:37but he did play for the Rams who had a chance to win the Superbowl.
05:40And now he plays for the Browns who've never been to one.
05:43So yeah,
05:43I'm going to take some of my aggression out on the third string quarterback.
05:46I did see that.
05:46Like the,
05:47the inverse of that,
05:48Randy was the core,
05:49slate of like miles Garrett's contracts,
05:51the same amount of money,
05:52which really means he took a pay cut because of the California taxes,
05:56which is true,
05:57which is damn true.
05:58But on the plus side,
06:00now he plays for a team that has a chance to win the Superbowl and not the
06:04Browns.
06:04Yeah.
06:05And he lives in Los Angeles and not Cleveland.
06:07Most important.
06:08I've never been to Cleveland.
06:09So I know Abe,
06:10Abe's very protective of Cleveland.
06:12Nice shakes.
06:13Really?
06:13Nice shakes.
06:15Huh?
06:15All right.
06:15Yeah.
06:16I wouldn't have expected that.
06:17Yep.
06:17Um,
06:18you had to go to that,
06:19to that side.
06:20You got to know where you're going.
06:22Yeah.
06:22game four of the Stanley cup finals tonight,
06:24uh,
06:24Vegas versus Carolina hurricanes.
06:26This series.
06:27I know we don't talk a ton of hockey.
06:28I don't,
06:28this series has been incredible.
06:29I don't,
06:29I mean,
06:30I love the NBA playoffs.
06:31There's no better series in sports than hockey.
06:33No,
06:34that's hockey.
06:34Cause they're all,
06:35it always seemed like when they're going for the Stanley cup,
06:37all the games are like this.
06:38They're all like,
06:39they're all like this.
06:39The series tend to go six or seven.
06:42Not always,
06:42but they tend to.
06:44Um,
06:44and this one's been completely insane.
06:46I mean,
06:46the first game was five,
06:48four.
06:48The second game was overtime.
06:49And the third game,
06:50Carolina's down for nothing.
06:51They score four goals to get back double overtime and end up losing.
06:55Um,
06:55yeah.
06:56Remember how Luke Jackson used to give my father-in-law heart palpitations?
06:59Yes.
06:59He's a diehard Carolina Panthers fan.
07:01Oh,
07:02I know Jim.
07:02I'm praying for him.
07:03Yeah.
07:05Praying for him.
07:05Jim ain't got to go to it.
07:06Jim ain't,
07:06Jim just sit on sitting with his lazy boy.
07:08Yeah.
07:09And just losing his damn mind.
07:10I think he has to take his heart monitor off while he watches the games.
07:13Otherwise,
07:14Julie will change the channel.
07:17They'll be watching,
07:18uh,
07:19what do they watch?
07:20They watch like those,
07:21you ever see those YouTube,
07:23like,
07:24screens of like peaceful beaches?
07:26No.
07:26With,
07:27uh,
07:27calm music behind it?
07:28No.
07:28They watch a lot of those.
07:29Just sit there watching?
07:31Yeah.
07:31I mean,
07:31I'll pretend you're at the beach.
07:32You know,
07:33I love the beach.
07:33You know me.
07:34You know,
07:35being at the beach.
07:35Yeah.
07:36They like to do that.
07:37Huh.
07:37Calm.
07:38I think it's great.
07:39Has anybody,
07:39you watch the thing on,
07:40on Netflix about the,
07:41the four oceans,
07:42the oceans,
07:43uh,
07:43show on,
07:43Oh,
07:43it's really good.
07:44They got Netflix show.
07:45They explain like the different,
07:47um,
07:48animals and corals and everything.
07:50And all this,
07:50that's really cool.
07:51It's really cool.
07:52I'll check that out.
07:53Really cool.
07:54And the kids will like it too.
07:55I'm going to encourage them to watch it.
07:56Cause my kids love it.
07:57Good.
07:57Yeah.
07:57They love watching it.
07:58All right.
07:58Mike Conti is going to join us next.
08:00Talk with him about the,
08:01uh,
08:01Quinn Snyder extension that came out yesterday.
