More than 60 Democratic lawmakers urged the Education Department to cancel eligible student debt and halt transfers of defaulted loans to Treasury.

00:02More than 60 Democratic lawmakers, led by Senator Elizabeth Warren,
00:07urged Education Secretary Linda McMahon to provide student debt relief to eligible borrowers
00:12and halt plans to transfer defaulted loan accounts to the Treasury Department.
00:16The lawmakers called on the administration to cancel debt for borrowers who qualify for
00:21existing federal programs, including public service loan forgiveness and borrower defense
00:26to repayment, according to Business Insider. They also requested faster processing of
00:31income-driven repayment applications. The group said 7.7 million borrowers were in default at the
00:36end of 2025, and another 3 million were delinquent. Delinquent student loan debt hit a record $171.4
00:44billion in the first quarter of 2026, as repayment pressures mounted across the federal student
00:51loan system, according to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. The request comes ahead of
00:55major student loan changes under Trump's One Big Beautiful Bill Act, set to take effect July 1st.
