Every four years, the citizens of the United States of America perform their most sacred national duty: electing a President to lead the country. For the last five decades, the fiercely independent residents of one small Northeastern state have played a vital role in this search. Before the election, before the conventions, before a presumptive nominee is chosen, there is New Hampshire . Winning New Hampshire is the 2004 edition of this American tradition. The film captures the essence of the New Hampshire Primary, what it takes to win, the effects of the media and the new political youth movement. With a focus on the John Kerry Campaign, the winner of both the New Hampshire Primary and the Democratic Nomination, Winning New Hampshire provides an experience of this extraordinary political phenomenin and presents a distinctly new perspective of the Presidential selection process.

00:21I think that New Hampshire is very important, a critical place for the candidates to engage
00:28in retail politics, and there's really no place else where the candidates can get right
00:34down with the voter.
00:43And that is why all of the United States is watching New Hampshire, and all of the world
00:49is watching New Hampshire.
00:55Well, New Hampshire, first of all, has the history of really being the state that decides
01:00in many ways who is going to be the nominee for president in either party.
01:04We can't afford to do that.
01:05And if we don't repair our relationship with the world, which is singularly within the power
01:11of the presidency, because the president is head of state.
01:15A candidate like Howard Dean or John Kerry can come from nowhere in either case and,
01:23you know, have the voter infrastructure in place to have a big victory.
01:31I think you'll see a lot of people doing anything they can come November.
01:37We've always been told that this was going to be the year the Internet was going to change politics.
01:40I guess you really realize a lot of the filtering that goes on with the media.
01:46At least so far as the public goes, you're not getting that sense of,
01:49oh, yeah, I really hate that guy.
01:51Oh, I really detest that guy.
01:57Folks, the hours are going down here.
01:59You have the extraordinary privilege of being the first people in the nation
02:05to cast votes on the primary.
02:07I'm cautious of the primary.
