00:13Explosions ripping through the air, fireballs erupting over the water, an entire harbor
00:19district swallowed by a wall of fire. This is the port of Manta, Ecuador, and on June
00:266, 2026, it became a scene that fishermen here will never forget. What started as a single
00:34spark on one vessel triggered a catastrophic chain reaction, destroying dozens of vessels,
00:41injuring multiple people, and dealing a financial blow worth millions to one of South America's
00:47most vital fishing communities. And the way it spread? Almost incomprehensibly fast.
00:54To understand why this fire was so devastating, you first need to understand where it happened.
01:02Manta is no ordinary port town. Sitting on Ecuador's Pacific coast, it's earned the title of the tuna
01:09capital of the world. Thousands of fishermen, hundreds of boats, and a fishing industry that
01:15drives enormous economic activity through tuna exports and artisanal fishing. Just before noon
01:22on a regular Saturday, workers aboard one vessel were doing what crews do in any port, routine
01:28maintenance, welding near a generator. Then a spark caught fuel. Within seconds, that single vessel
01:36was burning. Within minutes, the fire had already jumped to the next boat, and the next, and the next.
01:43The fire didn't just spread, it cascaded. Witnesses described hearing a terrifying series of explosions.
01:51Fuel tanks, gas cylinders, and engines detonating like a string of bombs going off across the harbor.
01:59Fishermen sprinted to escape burning boats. Bystanders on the docks watched in horror as an entire
02:05section of the fleet disappeared into smoke and flame. Footage that circulated online, and it's genuinely
02:13difficult to watch, shows massive fireballs erupting over the water, with thick black smoke billowing so high
02:21it was visible miles away from the port. Emergency calls flooded in. Firefighters from the Manta Fire Department
02:29rushed to the scene, backed by national police and rescue teams. When it was finally over, the toll was
02:36staggering. Over 35 boats destroyed, including 21 fiberglass fishing vessels and 14 larger boats.
02:45At least two people rushed to hospital with serious burns and smoke inhalation, currently reported to be
02:52unstable condition. And by some miracle, no confirmed fatalities. Preliminary damage estimates have
02:59already surpassed $25 million, and that number is still climbing as assessors work through the wreckage.
03:07One spark, one moment of bad luck during what should have been a routine repair job. And just like that,
03:14dozens of boats gone, millions in losses, and an entire fishing community left asking, what now?
