Pele King Of The Game 2023
Transcript
02:00In his death, football has lost its king, and the world has lost a legend.
02:06But his presence will forever be felt, and his influence will always be seen on and off the pitch.
02:14Without Pele, there would be no beautiful game.
02:17It wouldn't exist, and it wouldn't exist, especially at this level, without Pele. He made it real.
02:33He was the king of the game.
03:00One of the greatest athletes of all time.
03:05Pele changed the game of football forever.
03:11From humble beginnings, playing on the streets of Brazil,
03:14to decades of success at the top of his game,
03:19Pele's electrifying play and penchant for spectacular goals
03:22made him a star worldwide.
03:25Even if the media world was not so global when he played,
03:30I've been traveling the world, and everywhere I go,
03:34you see a photo of Pele.
03:44His unique style combines speed, creativity, and technical skill
03:48with physical power, stamina, and athleticism.
03:54For nearly 20 years, he was the player who made a difference
03:59every time he played for his club or country,
04:02with a tendency to score when it mattered the most.
04:11His ability to dribble past players with ease,
04:15using skill, pace, and style,
04:17made Pele a nightmare to play against,
04:20but a dream to watch.
04:23Around the world, he was both feared and revered.
04:27And after being globally named the king,
04:30Pele transcended his status as a Brazilian legend.
04:34He was footballing royalty.
04:37But this king wasn't born to rule.
04:40He was born to play football.
04:57Edson Orantes do Nascimento,
04:59the boy who would become Pele,
05:02was born on the 23rd of October, 1940,
05:04in TrĂȘs Coroçoes,
05:07a municipality in the south of Minas Gerais, Brazil.
05:11Named after the American inventor Thomas Edison,
05:14Pele was the first born of
05:16Joao Ramos do Nascimento and Celeste Orantes.
05:20He had two younger siblings,
05:22his sister Maria and his brother Jair.
05:25His father, Joao,
05:26was a professional footballer known as Don Dino.
05:31Although he would never make it to the top leagues
05:33after suffering a severe injury,
05:35he inspired his son to play.
06:00As a boy,
06:02Pele grew up in poverty in Baurua,
06:05near Sao Paulo.
06:05At the time,
06:07the social hierarchy in Brazil was rigid,
06:10and few of those born on the lower end of the chain
06:13could navigate their way to the top.
06:15Some of the rare few who could climb the social ladder
06:19were athletes who gained fame and status
06:21due to their athletic ability.
06:26Pele took it upon himself
06:28to help financially support his family
06:30by shining shoes.
06:32But his dream was always to follow
06:34in his father's footsteps,
06:36and it was on the football field
06:38that Pele would find his true talent.
06:45It wasn't long before his gift
06:47was impossible to ignore.
07:01Pele's father had taught him
07:03how to play football from a young age,
07:05although they couldn't afford
07:06to buy a proper football.
07:09Instead, the young footballer
07:11had developed his talent
07:12on the streets of Baurua,
07:13kicking anything he could get his hands on.
07:15Using socks stuffed with newspaper
07:18and grapefruits,
07:20Pele's introduction to football
07:21was rooted in poverty,
07:23but ultimately began his journey into stardom.
07:36As a boy,
07:37he played for several local amateur teams
07:39and continually impressed youth coaches
07:42throughout his childhood
07:44and early teenage years.
07:50When he was 14,
07:52Pele was scouted
07:53by Valdemar Gibrito,
07:55a former Brazilian footballer
07:57who coached a local youth team.
08:00The former player
08:01brought the teenage Pele
08:03into his team,
08:04the Baru Atletico Club Juniors,
08:07and quickly made him captain.
08:13He became one of the most important players
08:16for the team,
08:17leading them to two
08:18Sao Paulo State Youth Championships.
08:26His teenage footballing experience
08:28was supplemented with futsal.
08:31Often described as a quicker
08:33and more technical game,
08:35Pele credited futsal
08:36with being one of the most important aspects
08:39of his footballing development.
08:41It's a lot quicker than football on grass.
08:44You have to think really quickly
08:45because everyone is close to each other.
08:48Learning the game
08:49probably helped me think on my feet better.
08:52It was through futsal
08:53that I first got my chance
08:55to play with adults.
08:56I was about 14,
08:57and I can remember
08:59that there was a tournament
09:00which I was told
09:01I was too young to take part.
09:03I ended up top scorer
09:05with 14 or 15 goals.
09:07That gave me a lot of confidence.
09:10I knew then
09:11not to be afraid
09:11of whatever might come.
09:17After impressing
09:18on both the indoor
09:19and outdoor pitches,
09:21Debrito eventually convinced
09:23Pele's family
09:24to let the budding phenomenon
09:26leave home
09:26and try out
09:27for the Santos Professional Soccer Club
09:29when he was 15.
09:31If successful,
09:33Pele had the chance
09:34to help pull his family
09:35out of the lower levels
09:36of Brazil's social hierarchy system
09:38and change their lives forever.
09:40For ever.
09:58Convinced of his phenomenal talent,
10:01in 1956,
10:02Debrito took Pele to Santos,
10:04an industrial in Port City
10:06near Sao Paulo,
10:07to try out
10:08for the professional club
10:09Santos FC.
10:13On arrival,
10:15Debrito told directors
10:16at Santos
10:17that the 15-year-old
10:19would be the greatest
10:20football player
10:21in the world.
10:24Within minutes of his trial,
10:26the young sensation
10:27impressed Santos'
10:28head coach, Lula.
10:30He agreed with Debrito's assessment
10:31and offered to sign
10:33Pele to the team.
10:40In June 1956,
10:42Pele signed
10:43for the Santos FC
10:44and was promoted
10:45across the local media
10:47as a future superstar
10:48of the club.
10:52Three months later,
10:54the teenager
10:55made his senior debut
10:56against local rivals,
10:58Corinthians,
10:59in an impressive
11:007-1 victory.
11:03His senior debut
11:04was bookmarked
11:05by his first
11:06competitive goal
11:07for the club,
11:08the first of over
11:09600 goals
11:10he would go on
11:11to score
11:11in his long career
11:12at Santos.
11:19For the next year,
11:21the name Pele
11:22slowly became
11:23increasingly synonymous
11:24with footballing greatness.
11:39Edson Arantes
11:42Do Nascimento.
11:44Very few people
11:45know who is
11:46Edson Arantes
11:47Do Nascimento.
11:48But if I say,
11:50you know Pele,
11:51then everybody
11:52all over the world,
11:53they know Pele.
11:54The origin
11:55of Pele's nickname
11:56has forever
11:57been in dispute.
11:59Even the man himself
12:00isn't totally sure
12:01where it came from.
12:04Eight years old,
12:05you know,
12:05seven, eight years old,
12:07I was playing
12:07in the street.
12:08The kids call me Pele
12:10because I did
12:10some mistake.
12:11I don't know why.
12:12What's the reason?
12:14Nobody knows the reason.
12:15Then I say,
12:16listen,
12:16my name is not Pele.
12:17My name is Edson.
12:19Don't call me Pele.
12:20This is an ugly name.
12:21Then everybody
12:22started to call me Pele
12:22to tease me.
12:24Initially as a boy,
12:26he was nicknamed
12:26Dico by his family,
12:28a name his mother
12:29referred to him as
12:30for the rest of his life.
12:32During his school days,
12:33however,
12:34it's theorized
12:35that he received
12:36the nickname Pele
12:37due to his mispronunciation
12:38of his favorite
12:39footballer's name,
12:41Bele.
12:42I can remember
12:43the name really
12:44bugged me at first.
12:45I was really proud
12:46that I was named
12:47after Thomas Edison
12:48and wanted to be
12:49called Edson.
12:50I thought Pele
12:51sounded horrible.
12:53It was a rubbish name.
12:55Edson sounded
12:56so much more serious
12:57and important.
12:58On one occasion,
13:00I punched a classmate
13:01because of it
13:02and earned
13:03a two-day suspension.
13:04This, predictably,
13:06did not have
13:07the desired effect.
13:08Other kids realized
13:10it annoyed me
13:11and so they started
13:12calling me Pele
13:13even more.
13:15His mispronunciation
13:17and the classmate's joke
13:19led to the young Edson
13:20becoming known
13:21as Pele,
13:22a name that would be
13:23chanted in stadiums
13:24worldwide
13:25for the next
13:2680 years.
13:32When the 1957 season
13:35started,
13:36Pele was given
13:36a starting place
13:37in the first team.
13:39Over the course
13:40of the season,
13:41the teenager
13:42became the top
13:43scorer in the league.
13:44What was clear,
13:46even at such a young age,
13:47was Pele's remarkable
13:49fluidity on the pitch,
13:51his speed and quickness
13:53amplifying his peerless
13:54ball-handing abilities.
13:56The Teenage Wonders
13:58performance first club
13:59with 41 goals
14:01in 38 appearances
14:03rightly caught the attention
14:05of the Brazilian
14:05national team.
14:09I have a lot
14:10because with 16 years old,
14:12I play with the
14:13Brazil national team
14:14in MaracanĂŁ
14:15against Argentina.
14:18Now,
14:18then I got a little
14:19more experience
14:20because I stay
14:21eight months
14:22with Santos
14:22from 16
14:23to 17,
14:25to get 17.
14:26I play with Santos,
14:27I play some games
14:28with the Brazil team
14:29and then I went
14:31to Sweden.
14:40The world was
14:42officially introduced
14:43to Pele
14:43in the 1958
14:44World Cup
14:45in Sweden.
14:46It was a record-breaking
14:48tournament
14:48for the young
14:49Brazilian superstar.
15:06Although initially injured,
15:08Pele made his
15:09World Cup debut
15:10during the final
15:11group stage match
15:12against the USSR.
15:14At the time,
15:15he was the youngest
15:16player to participate
15:17in the World Cup.
15:33Against France
15:34in the semifinal,
15:35Pele scored a hat-trick,
15:37becoming the youngest
15:38player in World Cup
15:39history to do so.
15:56After securing
15:57his team a place
15:58in the final,
15:59Pele became
16:00the youngest player
16:01to play in a World Cup
16:02final match.
16:03And of course,
16:05the teenager lit up
16:06the final,
16:07scoring two goals
16:08as Brazil beat Sweden
16:105-2 in Stockholm.
16:12At 17,
16:14Pele had won
16:15the most sought-after
16:16trophy in world football
16:17and he did it
16:19in style.
16:21In the first World Cup,
16:22I was 17 years old.
16:24Then I was selected
16:26to go to,
16:27with the national team
16:29to go to Sweden.
16:31And then everybody
16:32think,
16:34my God,
16:35it was difficult
16:37for you,
16:38you know,
16:38you are very young,
16:40but I said,
16:42I swear,
16:43I swear,
16:45it was like a dream.
16:46It was not difficult.
16:47I just went to be in the team.
16:49You just went to play,
16:49to be yourself.
16:50I went to play,
16:51then I have a lot.
16:53The team went home
16:54to national acclaim
16:56and Pele resumed
16:57playing for Santos.
16:59With nothing but talent
17:00to guide him,
17:01the boy from Minas Gerais
17:03became a global
17:04sporting superstar
17:05and a source
17:06of genuine uplift
17:07and inspiration
17:08for people
17:09across Brazil.
17:36As part of his
17:39military service,
17:40he also played
17:41for two army teams.
17:43In 1959 alone,
17:45he endured
17:46a relentless schedule
17:47of 103 competitive matches.
17:50Nine times,
17:51he played two games
17:52within 24 hours.
18:03Owing to his standout performance
18:05in the 1958 World Cup
18:07and his continued success
18:08for Santos over
18:09the following season,
18:11the young Pele
18:11was subsequently
18:12inundated with offers
18:14to jump ship
18:15from Santos
18:15to a variety
18:17of European clubs.
18:18Real Madrid,
18:20Juventus,
18:20and Manchester United
18:22tried to sign
18:23the young Brazilian
18:23following the tournament.
18:25Inter Milan
18:26even managed
18:27to get him
18:27a regular contract
18:28but were forced
18:30to tear it up
18:30at the request
18:31of Santos' chairman
18:32following a revolt
18:34by Santos' fans.
18:38In response
18:39to the attempted
18:40poaching from Europe,
18:42the Brazilian government
18:43passed a resolution
18:44declaring him
18:45a non-exportable
18:46national treasure,
18:48making any potential
18:49departure legally tricky.
19:03Pele entered the 1962
19:04World Cup
19:05with an aura
19:06around him.
19:07By now,
19:08thanks to his
19:09ever-growing goal record
19:11and skill set,
19:12the 21-year-old
19:13was the best-rated
19:14player in the world.
19:24An injury
19:25put the Brazilian
19:26out of the rest
19:26of the tournament.
19:27Still,
19:28the team went on
19:29to win,
19:30beating Czechoslovakia
19:32in the final
19:32and becoming
19:33the first in history
19:34to retain
19:35a football
19:36World Cup title.
19:41At the time,
19:42only players
19:43who appeared
19:43in the final
19:44were eligible
19:45for a medal
19:45before FIFA regulations
19:47were changed
19:48in 1978
19:49to include
19:50the entire squad,
19:51with Pele
19:52receiving his
19:53winner's medal
19:54retroactively
19:55in 2007.
20:03After the 1962
20:05World Cup,
20:06Pele continued
20:07to excel
20:08for his club
20:09team Santos.
20:10Consistently
20:11a top scorer,
20:12he often faced
20:13teams who
20:14altered their
20:15play specifically
20:16to deal with
20:17the threat
20:17he posed,
20:18constantly ensuring
20:20two or three
20:21players were
20:21always marking
20:22him.
20:23Despite this,
20:25he still scored
20:2660 goals
20:27in the 1964
20:28season
20:29and 101 goals
20:31in 1965.
20:40Owing to his
20:41standout performance
20:42in the previous
20:42tournament
20:43and his
20:44illustrious form
20:45for Santos,
20:46Pele was still
20:47regarded as the
20:48best player in the
20:49world when England
20:50hosted the World Cup
20:51in 1966.
20:53However,
20:54for Brazilian fans,
20:55the World Cup
20:56was marked
20:57after Pele
20:58was targeted
20:58by rival teams
20:59trying to stop him
21:00in his tracks.
21:02He was brutally
21:03kicked in the
21:04first game
21:05against Bulgaria
21:06and was finally
21:07sidelined
21:08during the
21:08third group
21:09stage match
21:09by a Portuguese
21:10player's tackle.
21:12With Pele
21:13essentially absent,
21:15Brazil was
21:16eliminated
21:16after losing
21:17to Portugal.
21:23After the tournament,
21:25the 26-year-old
21:26was so disheartened
21:27that he announced
21:28he would retire
21:29from the national
21:30team.
21:42By 1969,
21:44with the World Cup
21:45looming,
21:46fans held their
21:47breath after the
21:48superstar initially
21:49declined a call-up
21:51to the national
21:51squad.
21:52Rumors slowly emerged
21:54that Pele was close
21:55to hanging up
21:56his boots
21:56and leaving
21:57football while
21:58he was at the
21:58top.
21:59With two World Cups,
22:01nearly 30
22:02domestic trophies,
22:04countless individual
22:05awards,
22:06and hundreds of goals,
22:08he'd already lived
22:09the ultimate
22:10footballer's dream.
22:12For football fans
22:13in Brazil
22:14and across the world,
22:15the idea of a World Cup
22:17without Pele,
22:18who had been their
22:19main source of
22:19entertainment for the
22:20past decade,
22:21was unthinkable.
22:38Luckily,
22:39after reconsidering
22:40his original decision,
22:42Pele would give
22:43his fans one more
22:44opportunity to see
22:45him play at the
22:461970 World Cup
22:48in Mexico.
23:03The last World Cup,
23:05the 17th in Mexico,
23:07after 35 years,
23:09that was difficult
23:10to me.
23:11That was difficult
23:12because I already
23:13was the former
23:15player.
23:16I decided to retire
23:18in this World Cup.
23:20Then I started
23:21to say,
23:21oh my God,
23:23I don't want
23:23to lose
23:25the World Cup
23:26because I'm going
23:27to retire.
23:27The medal
23:28was the same,
23:30because the three
23:31medals were the same,
23:32but the ambition,
23:35the moment
23:36was completely
23:37different.
24:02The Brazil
24:03squad selected
24:04for the 1970
24:05tournament is
24:06often considered
24:07the greatest
24:08football team
24:09in history.
24:10The team's route
24:11to the final
24:12saw them averaging
24:13more than
24:14three goals
24:15per game.
24:16Yoga Benito
24:17was in full flow
24:18as the Brazilians
24:19east passed
24:20every opponent
24:21in their way.
24:22Yes, there it is!
24:25That is the
24:25touch of a master!
24:28Come on!
24:32Yeah, when we talk
24:33about the beautiful
24:35game, that was a joke
24:37we used to say
24:39for the little
24:40part.
24:41No, we played
24:41the beautiful game.
24:43Santos, Brazil
24:44always played
24:45the beautiful game.
24:46The European team
24:48they played too hard
24:49is not the beautiful
24:50game.
24:50rule to say
24:51but giving away
24:52a two-goal advantage
24:53could only happen
24:54once in the 1970
24:55World Cup
24:56but you know
24:58who did that?
24:59I don't think
24:59Brazil are going
24:59to do it here.
25:01Against a strong
25:02England team
25:02thanks partly
25:03to the heroic
25:04goalkeeping
25:05of England goalkeeper
25:06Gordon Banks
25:07the Brazilians
25:09only managed
25:09to score one goal.
25:11He always says
25:12to me when he comes
25:12over here
25:13he says
25:14I travel all
25:15over the world
25:16and people talk
25:17about the goals
25:18of the score
25:18he says
25:18but when I come
25:19to England
25:19all they talk
25:20about is that
25:21save that you
25:22mentioned me.
25:23I had the ball
25:24I already jumped
25:26to say go
25:27then I looked
25:28there
25:29I did
25:30go
25:34that's good.
25:39Pele and his team
25:40still won
25:40knocking out
25:41the previous
25:42World Cup
25:43champions.
25:55Brazil faced
25:56Italy in the final
25:57at the Azteca
25:58Stadium in Mexico
25:59City in what
26:00turned out to be
26:01Pele's last
26:02competitive appearance
26:03for his country.
26:05Pele scored
26:06the first goal
26:07in the final
26:07in what was
26:08Brazil's 100th
26:10World Cup goal.
26:11He rose above
26:13the tall Italian
26:14defender to head
26:15the ball into
26:16the back of the net.
26:20His leap of joy
26:22into the arms
26:23of teammate
26:23Yerzino
26:24to celebrate
26:25is regarded
26:26as one of the
26:26most iconic
26:27moments in
26:28World Cup history.
26:31The team went
26:32on to win
26:334-1
26:34and with yet
26:35another
26:35World Cup.
26:42after being
26:43directly responsible
26:44for over half
26:44the goals
26:45his team scored
26:46during the
26:46World Cup
26:47Pele was awarded
26:48the golden ball
26:49as the player
26:50of the tournament.
26:55Soon after
26:56winning his third
26:57and final
26:57World Cup
26:58Pele retired
26:59from international
27:00football.
27:01He played
27:02his last match
27:02on the 18th
27:03of July
27:041971
27:05against Yugoslavia
27:07in Rio de Janeiro.
27:11Nearly 140,000 fans
27:14packed into the
27:15Maracana
27:15to watch the King
27:16play for Brazil
27:17one final time.
27:32After the
27:331974 season
27:34his 19th
27:36with Santos
27:37Pele retired
27:38from Brazilian
27:39club football
27:40although he
27:41occasionally played
27:42for Santos
27:42in official
27:43competitive matches.
27:47Pele had long
27:48said he would
27:49only ever
27:50play for Santos
27:51so for many
27:52his retirement
27:53announcement
27:54felt like the
27:55end of a
27:55wonderful era
27:56in footballing
27:57history.
28:21A year later
28:22Pele came
28:23out of
28:23retirement
28:24to sign
28:25with the
28:25New York
28:25Cosmos
28:26for the
28:261975 season.
28:41Although
28:41he had long
28:42said he would
28:43only ever
28:43play for
28:44Santos
28:44he couldn't
28:45resist
28:46answering the
28:47call from
28:47the New
28:47York
28:48Cosmos
28:48in 1975.
28:51Everybody
28:51knows
28:53I went
28:54to
28:54the
28:55United
28:55States
28:55to
28:56promote
28:56soccer
28:57there.
28:58I played
28:5920 years
29:00with my
29:00team
29:00Santos
29:01then
29:01when I
29:01retired
29:02I went
29:03to the
29:03United
29:03States
29:03to
29:04promote
29:04the
29:04soccer
29:05and
29:05then
29:06New York
29:06become
29:07well-known
29:08all over
29:08the world.
29:09And
29:09today
29:10for me
29:11I am
29:12a very
29:12very
29:13honor
29:14to that.
29:15The best
29:15pastime
29:16in the
29:17United States
29:17today
29:17is the
29:18football
29:18soccer.
29:20This
29:20means a lot
29:21for me.
29:23Henry A.
29:24Kissinger,
29:24the United
29:25States
29:25Secretary of
29:26State at
29:26the time,
29:27had written
29:28to the
29:28Brazilian
29:28government
29:29asking it
29:30to release
29:30Pelé to
29:31play in
29:31the United
29:32States
29:32to help
29:33promote
29:33soccer
29:33and Brazil
29:34in
29:35America.
29:43Playing
29:44in
29:44America
29:45represented
29:45a
29:46significant
29:46step
29:46down
29:47in terms
29:48of the
29:48level of
29:48play
29:49that
29:49Pelé
29:49was
29:49accustomed
29:50to.
29:50However,
29:51the league
29:52benefited
29:52greatly
29:53from him
29:54as an
29:54ambassador
29:55of the
29:55game
29:55and
29:56ticket
29:56sales
29:57soared.
30:03The
30:04American
30:04public,
30:05largely
30:05unfamiliar
30:06with the
30:06game,
30:07began to
30:07take notice.
30:13Much like
30:14his impact
30:14on football
30:15in Brazil,
30:16Pelé was
30:17the catalyst
30:17that changed
30:18soccer in
30:19America
30:19forever.
30:21Okay,
30:22well,
30:22it's
30:22an
30:23orante
30:23do
30:23nascimento.
30:24It's good
30:24to see you.
30:24Did I say
30:25it right?
30:25My pleasure.
30:26Very nice
30:27to be
30:27here
30:28with you.
30:29This,
30:29of course,
30:29is the
30:30immortal,
30:31truly
30:31immortal
30:31in this
30:31sport,
30:32Pelé.
30:32Pelé,
30:33what did
30:33you think
30:34of the
30:34first half?
30:35I like
30:36the way
30:36Cosmo
30:36play.
30:37It's
30:38very hard
30:39to play
30:39against
30:39the
30:40team
30:40who
30:40play
30:40all
30:41back.
30:42Pelé
30:43opened
30:43the door
30:44for many
30:44other stars
30:45to play
30:45in North
30:46America.
30:47Over
30:47the next
30:48few
30:48years,
30:49other
30:49world-famous
30:49players,
30:50including
30:51Johan Cruyff,
30:52Eusebio,
30:53Bobby
30:53Moore,
30:54George
30:54Best,
30:55and
30:55Gordon
30:55Banks,
30:56followed
30:57the
30:57Brazilian
30:57to
30:58the
30:58American
30:58League.
30:59America
31:00has shown
31:00in the
31:00past
31:01that
31:01for
31:01great
31:02players
31:02like
31:02Pelé
31:03and
31:03Beckenbauer,
31:04George
31:04Best,
31:05it can
31:05be a
31:06very
31:07attractive
31:07last
31:08chapter
31:08of a
31:09footballer's
31:09career.
31:11Gaz is
31:11going there
31:12and I'm
31:12sure
31:12they're
31:12looking
31:13forward
31:13to seeing
31:15him and
31:15he'll be
31:16very much
31:17a part
31:17of their
31:18next
31:18generation
31:19of
31:19footballer.
31:21Pelé
31:22led the
31:22Cosmos
31:23to a
31:23championship
31:24before
31:24retiring
31:25for good.
31:26An
31:26event
31:27marked
31:27by an
31:28exhibition
31:28match
31:29between
31:29his
31:29adopted
31:30New York
31:30team
31:31and
31:31Santos.
31:33The
31:34game
31:34was
31:34played
31:34in front
31:35of a
31:35sold-out
31:36crowd
31:36at the
31:36Giants
31:37Stadium
31:37and was
31:38televised
31:39worldwide.
31:41Pelé
31:41played the
31:42first half
31:42with the
31:43Cosmos
31:43and the
31:44second
31:44with
31:45Santos.
31:45The
31:46game
31:46ended
31:47with the
31:47Cosmos
31:48winning
31:482-1
31:49with
31:49Pelé
31:50scoring a
31:5030-yard
31:51free kick
31:52for the
31:52Cosmos
31:53in what
31:53was the
31:53final goal
31:54of his
31:55career.
31:58During the
31:58second half
31:59it started
32:00to rain
32:00prompting
32:01a Brazilian
32:02newspaper
32:02to come
32:03out with
32:03the headline
32:03the following
32:04day
32:04even the
32:06sky was
32:06crying.
32:13Pelé
32:14retired from
32:15football after
32:16the exhibition
32:16match.
32:17His
32:17legacy
32:18was firmly
32:19intact as
32:20arguably the
32:21finest
32:21practitioner
32:22winner of
32:22the
32:23beautiful
32:23game.
32:24By this
32:25time he
32:25had amassed
32:26a series
32:27of extraordinary
32:28records with
32:291,283 goals
32:31to his name
32:32including 92
32:33hat tricks and
32:35a trilogy of
32:36world cups.
32:37The Brazilian
32:38holds the record
32:39for the most
32:40career goals and
32:41world cup wins
32:42in football
32:42history.
32:44Retirement
32:45did little to
32:45diminish the
32:46public profile
32:47of Pelé who
32:48remained a
32:49popular pitchman
32:50and active in
32:51many professional
32:52arenas.
32:53The Brazilian
32:54legend ventured
32:55into the movie
32:56business appearing
32:57in the 1981
32:58movie Escape to
32:59Victory as
33:00Corporal Luis
33:01Fernandez alongside
33:03Michael Caine,
33:04Sylvester Stallone
33:05and Max von
33:06Cito.
33:08The film set
33:09during the
33:10Second World War
33:11tells the story
33:12of allied
33:13prisoners of war
33:14who play an
33:14exhibition football
33:15match against
33:16a German team.
33:38Pelé also
33:39ventured into
33:40public service
33:40in 1995
33:41when he was
33:42appointed Brazil's
33:44minister for sport
33:45by then
33:45president
33:46Fernando
33:47Enrique
33:47Cardoso.
33:48Pelé began a
33:50crusade to
33:51bring accountability
33:51to the business
33:52operations of
33:53Brazil's
33:54professional teams
33:55which were still
33:56mainly run as
33:57gentlemen's clubs
33:58and to reform
33:59rules governing
34:00players' contracts.
34:02In 1997,
34:04Pelé was awarded
34:05an honorary knighthood
34:06by Queen Elizabeth
34:07II.
34:09He still causes a
34:10stir wherever he
34:11goes.
34:12The greatest
34:12footballing legend
34:13of all time
34:14can't call himself
34:15Sir Pelé because
34:16he's a foreign
34:17national but he was
34:18clearly proud of the
34:19gong he received
34:19from the Queen.
34:20It was partly for
34:22his work with
34:22children here at a
34:24project at Chelsea
34:25combining homework
34:26and football.
34:27He's now minister
34:28for sport in Brazil
34:29and showed
34:30diplomatic footwork
34:31when asked about
34:32England in the
34:32World Cup.
34:33England, you know,
34:34play very well.
34:36They have a good
34:36coach now,
34:38change your style,
34:40qualify very well.
34:42But in this
34:43tournament,
34:43it's very hard to
34:44say who's gonna
34:45win because
34:46it's a staff tournament.
34:47I wish Brazil
34:48be in the final.
34:50He wrote
34:51best-selling books
34:52about his life,
34:53both on and
34:54off the pitch,
34:56outlining his
34:56rise to the top
34:58of the footballing
34:59world.
35:00Good to see you.
35:02Welcome to Britain.
35:03Tell us about the book.
35:04Is it more about
35:04football or more
35:05about you?
35:06It's about my life.
35:07I did a lot of
35:09books.
35:11We talk
35:12everything,
35:13you know.
35:17in December
35:182000,
35:19Pele and Maradona
35:20shared the
35:21FIFA Player of the
35:22Century Award.
35:23The award was
35:24initially intended
35:25to be based upon
35:26votes in a web
35:27poll,
35:28but after it
35:28became apparent
35:29that it favored
35:30Diego Maradona,
35:32FIFA then
35:32appointed a
35:33family of football
35:34committee of FIFA
35:35members to decide
35:36the winner of the
35:37award.
35:38The committee
35:39chose Pele.
35:41Since Maradona
35:42was winning the
35:42internet poll,
35:43it was decided
35:44that the two
35:45would share
35:45the award.
35:48Well,
35:49I think
35:50it could be
35:53a dead heat
35:54where we look
35:54as depends
35:56on your era.
35:57I suppose
35:57you brought up
35:58and it was Pele
35:58or Maradona
35:59that was the
36:00issue,
36:00isn't it?
36:02And,
36:02of course,
36:03the arguments
36:04could go on
36:04and on
36:05and on.
36:07They are,
36:08I think,
36:09probably,
36:09they are the
36:10two greatest
36:10players and
36:10I think the
36:11one you would
36:12maybe put in
36:12amongst it
36:13would be
36:13De Stefano.
36:17If you look
36:17at both careers,
36:19I mean,
36:20World Cup
36:20winners,
36:22played in
36:23great teams,
36:25both played
36:26for the country
36:26at 17 years
36:27of age.
36:29It tells you
36:30even before
36:31they became
36:32famous,
36:32what they
36:33thought of
36:33them,
36:34the identification
36:34of them
36:35as young
36:35kids.
36:38it's a very
36:39difficult one.
36:40Pele was
36:41involved in
36:42three World
36:42Cup winning
36:43teams,
36:43wasn't he?
36:44Although he
36:45was injured
36:45in the
36:4562 final,
36:47he didn't
36:48play in it,
36:48he got injured
36:50and he was
36:51injured in the
36:5166 World
36:52Cup.
36:53Maradona and
36:53Pele were
36:54different in
36:54some ways.
36:55Maradona was
36:56a fantastic
36:57course controller
36:58driving the
36:59ball at
36:59defenders'
37:00feet.
37:01I always
37:01thought that
37:01was his
37:02greatest
37:02strength.
37:03he always
37:04put the
37:05bait out
37:06to the
37:06defender
37:06to try
37:07and tackle
37:07him.
37:08It was
37:08fantastic
37:09how he
37:09did that.
37:11And then
37:11Pele's
37:11header in
37:12the World
37:13Cup final
37:13against
37:13Italy,
37:14how he
37:14suspends
37:15himself in
37:15the air
37:16and gets
37:16the header
37:16down.
37:17I mean,
37:18fantastic.
37:19And Pele
37:20scored in
37:21his first
37:21game for
37:21Brazil,
37:22I think
37:22he scored
37:22a hat-trick,
37:23didn't he?
37:24He scored
37:25a hat-trick
37:25in his
37:26first game
37:27in Sweden.
37:29Scored the
37:30goal in the
37:30semi-final,
37:31scored two
37:31in the
37:31final,
37:32didn't he?
37:33Yeah,
37:33two in the
37:33final,
37:34won the
37:34semi-final
37:34then against
37:35Wales.
37:36For all
37:37of his
37:37post-playing
37:37career,
37:38Pele
37:39continued to
37:39be involved
37:40with football
37:41as much
37:41as possible,
37:42acting as
37:43a custodian
37:44for the
37:44game and
37:45traveling
37:45worldwide to
37:46help promote
37:47different clubs,
37:48cups,
37:49and tournaments.
37:51I'm going
37:52to make a
37:52statement to
37:53you.
37:54This is
37:55the only
37:55club I
37:55didn't have
37:56in my
37:56house.
37:58Can I
37:58take that
37:59to have
37:59home again?
38:14He's a very
38:15genuine,
38:16warm,
38:17and wonderful
38:18person.
38:19It's a pity
38:19he can't sign for
38:21us today as a
38:21player, but
38:22apparently he
38:23damaged his
38:23ligaments,
38:24never when
38:26playing at top
38:26level, but
38:27when he was
38:28teaching his
38:28kids last
38:29week, he
38:30tripped up
38:30and damaged
38:31his knee
38:31ligament, so
38:32he's limping
38:33a wee bit.
38:34I reckon he
38:35could still get
38:36in the squad,
38:36but maybe not
38:37start or play
38:38the full 90
38:38minutes.
38:39So we are
38:40all delighted
38:40at Sheffield
38:41United to
38:41have Pele
38:43with us.
38:43He's an
38:44ambassador for
38:45the world of
38:46sport, and
38:47an ambassador in
38:48particular for
38:49the world of
38:49football.
38:50So as I
38:52said to him
38:52over lunch,
38:53once a
38:54blade, always
38:55a blade.
39:03He's
39:03going to be
39:14here.
39:16Referees,
39:16fish,
39:17fish,
39:18fish.
39:26In 2013, he was awarded the FIFA Ballon d'Orprix d'Honneur in recognition of his career and achievements.
39:56The most notable area of Pele's later life was his ambassadorial work.
40:02Retirement saw the footballing legend go on to campaign for a variety of causes, including
40:08poverty reduction, anti-corruption movements, and environmental protection.
40:18Pele auctioned more than 1,600 items from a collection he accumulated over decades and
40:24raised 3.6 million pounds for charity.
40:28All placed there in the room, against the wall there at 2,000, 2,000, 2,500.
40:38Lot 264, all for one of the game, it's all throughout the menu, lot 264, 140, 150, 160, 170, 180,
40:49190, 200, 220, 240, 260, 270.
41:01Illness dictated much of Pele's final years as the Brazilian legend battled various health
41:07issues.
41:08Still determined to attend public events and meet fans, the fragility of Pele became more
41:14and more evident.
41:20In September 2021, Pele had surgery to remove a cancerous colon tumor and began chemotherapy
41:28soon after.
41:33On the 3rd of December 2022, Pele was hospitalized at the Albert Einstein Hospital in Sao Paulo.
41:43Four days later, he told his social media followers, I want to keep everyone calm and positive.
41:50I'm strong, with a lot of hope.
41:53I have a lot of faith in God, thank you so much for everything.
42:08On the 29th of December 2022, Pele died in Sao Paulo after a short battle with colon cancer.
42:39Pele died in Sao Paulo after a short battle with a cancerous colon cancer.
43:10A three-day period of national mourning was announced.
43:13A tribute fit for a king.
43:17Across the world, people celebrated the extraordinary life of Pelé.
43:27In Santos, Pelé's coffin, draped in the flags of Brazil and Santos FC, lay in state
43:34at the Villa Belmiro Stadium.
43:37Nearly a quarter of a million fans queued to pay their respects to Pelé, a manifestation
43:44of the legacy he created.
43:50Fans lined the streets of the city where his storied career began to bid the legend farewell,
43:55as his casket was moved from the stadium to his final resting place.
44:10Many in attendance wore the yellow and green number 10 Brazilian jerseys and the black and
44:16white Santos Football Club jersey, which Pelé wore during his career.
44:28Pelé was buried at Memorial Necropelé, Eukamenica, the world's tallest vertical cemetery, overlooking
44:35the stadium where he became an icon.
44:42It's important that children in 20 years, in 50 years, in 100 years from now, they remember
44:50who Pelé was.
44:51Pelé was the first in many things.
44:55And we need to remember him in a field, in a stadium where goals are being scored, where
45:02emotions are being felt, because that's exactly the skill that Pelé had as a gift of God.
45:12Pelé was the first in a field of football.
45:13Wherever football is played, the name Pelé will be synonymous with it.
45:20For many, Pelé's accomplishments on the football pitch will never be equaled, and virtually all
45:27great footballers will be measured against the Brazilian who made the world stop whenever
45:32the ball was at his feet. Today we remember Pele as the man who changed
45:42football and Brazil forever.
