Microplastic filters for washing machines could soon be mandatory in the EU. How do they work?

Every time you do laundry, your clothes shed microplastics. A Bristol startup has built a filter to stop them.

00:05about 60% of all fabric made is synthetic and that means it's made of oil and it means it's

00:11plastic if you rub your hand on the inside it's kind of like a cheese grater think of it abrading
00:27slowly all of these pieces of plastic and turning them into tiny little pieces that go down into into
00:32our water in the UK there's about 24 million homes so we're seeing somewhere in the region
00:37around 16 tons of this material entering the water per day
00:51there isn't actually a filter designed to remove this and that's what we did when we developed
00:58our product you can get this as a retrofit solution there's a little light on the top that will tell
01:18you when it needs to be emptied that that for most people probably be about once a month they come

01:25to the unit they've opened the open the unit itself there's uh you can you can open the top
01:32and then inside will be full of microplastic
01:45what we refer to as the prince william effect has been has been incredible you know we've we've had
01:50him come to visit our offices in bristol and really shine light into this issue
01:57microplastic is in the grand scheme of the world can sometimes feel very small but it's something
02:02that we can all do something about and also like i always think if we've sold the micro materials we've
02:07solved the macro problems so things like plastic bottles in the gutter won't be such of an issue
