00:06The stories you're about to see are real, aggressive snatching grabs, deadly creatures
00:16seeking revenge, and explosive run-ins turned into fights for survival.
00:24It could be deadly to get in between two male moose that are fighting like this.
00:27Each dangerous face-off shows the power of nature's fury unleashed.
00:37We're counting down the ten most shocking showdowns on weird, true, and freaky.
00:47When this titan bites the hand that feeds it, it might just tear it off.
00:57The Florida Everglades.
01:01Millions of tourists flock here every year to see rare and fascinating animals.
01:06And one of the most dangerous is the American alligator.
01:11Alligators are ambush predators, and they're extremely fast.
01:15So when they surprise their prey item, they usually attack so quickly that, you know, it's over before they even
01:22know anything happened.
01:26At a local alligator farm, several of these fearsome predators have gathered near a chain link fence for feeding time.
01:34As a group of tourists watches, a handler pulls dead rats from a bucket and holds them up over the
01:41gators, coaxing the killer reptiles to reach up and display their enormous size.
01:48The alligators fight for position as each rat is dangled above.
01:54The competition for each tasty morsel is fierce.
02:02Then, one of the smaller gators pushes forward toward the fence and climbs up.
02:08The handler quickly rewards it with the rat, but the gator's not satisfied.
02:15Sensing this reptile's a bit too eager, the handler attempts to push it away from the fence.
02:21But no matter what the handler does, the gator won't back off.
02:30Suddenly, without warning, the alligator snatches the man's hand and bites hard.
02:37Clenching down with up to 2,000 pounds of pressure, it refuses to let go.
02:42Can we get help? Please get help?
02:49With the handler trapped, the huge predator begins to shake violently.
02:54It's a tactic designed to remove limbs.
02:59An adult American alligator has 80 sharp teeth, and it has an incredibly strong bite force, at least 10 times
03:05stronger than our bite force.
03:07So they can cause a lot of damage.
03:09And once they get their jaw around something, they're not likely to let go.
03:13They're pretty impressive.
03:21Thankfully, one of the tourists rushes up and throws a large plastic garbage can at the aggressive gator.
03:28And it seems to do the trick.
03:31Walking away, the handler's left glove is torn and bloody.
03:36Sorry about that, show's over.
03:38A painful reminder, when you feed a hungry beast, you'd better watch your fingers.
03:48Next, in our countdown of shocking showdowns, is number nine.
03:54A violent encounter that shows timing is everything.
04:01La Scala, Spain.
04:03This Mediterranean fishing port's a popular destination for tourists.
04:08Here, you can kick back, relax, and maybe even catch a glimpse of fast-moving swordfish, toothy barracuda, and large,
04:18intimidating tuna.
04:20Tuna are the Olympic athletes of the ocean.
04:24They're big.
04:25They're strong.
04:25They're muscular.
04:27They're powerful.
04:28They move through the water really quickly.
04:30They are evolved to be the top predator of their environment.
04:35On a cloudy day, a group of men stand on the dock when a massive tuna swims by.
04:43Hoping to draw the tuna closer, the men try to entice the behemoth with a small fish.
04:50What they don't realize, a scavenging seagulls waiting nearby.
04:55She sees the fish, too, and assumes it's up for grabs.
05:02She's dead wrong.
05:04With the tuna bearing down, the thieving bird picks the worst moment to go fishing.
05:12The huge tuna, able to swim up to 40 miles per hour, pounces on the seagull, engulfing her and the
05:20fish in one enormous bite.
05:23Tuna are huge, 1,500 pounds, 2,000 pound fish.
05:28Tuna typically hunts smaller fish like herring or sardines, but they'll take anything that they can catch.
05:33There's squid in the water or octopus in the water, whatever it is, whatever invertebrate that's meaty, they're going to
05:38eat.
05:39Thankfully, this tuna's not interested in fowl.
05:43As soon as he realizes what he has, seemingly in disgust, he spits out the seagull.
05:51Amazingly, the dazed bird floats up to the surface.
05:56She's stunned, but very lucky to be alive.
06:06Before we continue our countdown, here's a showdown that's the ultimate rude interruption.
06:20Johannesburg, South Africa.
06:22These plains are hunting grounds for some of the deadliest carnivores on Earth.
06:27Lions.
06:29These killer cats are constantly on the hunt for food and females.
06:36When lions breed, it's all about speed and stamina.
06:40Although they only mate for about a minute at a time, it can happen 20 to 40 times a day,
06:45which leaves little time for anything else, including eating.
06:51With a beautiful evening glow cast over the plains, a lion and lioness are in the mood.
06:58What they don't realize, they've chosen the wrong spot to couple.
07:07A fellow plains dweller is watching their every move.
07:11It's a white rhinoceros, and he doesn't like their act on his turf.
07:19The up to two and a half ton animal confronts the lions with an aggressive stance.
07:27Rhinoceros can be very territorial.
07:29They mark their territory with urine spraying on trees and bushes and plants.
07:33This is a signal for other rhinos to stay out.
07:36Although other species may not know this signal and cross into their territory,
07:40the rhinos will make short order of getting them out of the way.
07:47At first, the amorous cats don't take him seriously.
07:51But when they call his bluff, the massive rhino proves he's not kidding around.
08:01He charges again and again.
08:04And this time, the big cats get the picture.
08:08With this meddling megafauna crashing their party over and over,
08:13their union isn't meant to be.
08:16The white rhinoceros have a horn that can be between three and five feet long.
08:20They've been known to impale other animals during bouts of aggression.
08:23So if these lions don't get out of the way, their encounter could be fatal.
08:29Fortunately for the lions, the rhino, convinced they've gotten the message,
08:33turns and trots off triumphant.
08:37And as soon as he clears the area, it's back to business.
08:42Out here, any chance you get is worth some trouble.
08:53We continue counting down the most shocking showdowns with number eight.
09:00When this aggressive thief's making a getaway, you'd better cut your losses.
09:05Or else.
09:10Great Barrier Reef, Australia.
09:13It has some of the most abundant sea life anywhere.
09:17From vibrant coral and colorful fish to deadly bull sharks.
09:24Bull sharks are one of the top three aggressive sharks.
09:27White shark and the tiger shark would be the other two.
09:29Bull sharks are very territorial and very aggressive.
09:32They're one of the sharks you want to really give a wide berth if you're in the water with.
09:38On a beautiful sunny day, pro diver Jack Strickland submerges to catch dinner for him and his crew.
09:46Holding his spear gun, he swims over the coral reef.
09:50And within seconds, he eyes a school of snapper.
09:55Taking aim, Jack fires and hits.
10:01Immediately, the snag snapper tears off, swooping down into the coral, catching Jack's line.
10:09Jack wrestles to get the fish out before the line breaks.
10:18Suddenly, a bull shark arrives on the scene.
10:21The dangerous ocean predator is on the hunt, and it sets its sights on Jack's catch.
10:27Big angry looking shark, you know?
10:31The shark takes a bite out of the fish.
10:34Then...
10:39He turns his attention to Jack.
10:43The diver has no choice.
10:45He drops his spear gun.
10:47There's just one problem.
10:50That was Jack's favourite spear gun.
10:53He basically took the reel, took the spear gun and just took off for the horizon.
10:57That's when the show began.
10:59In a move that seems both brave and foolish, Jack decides to chase the shark.
11:06Jack follows the thief all the way to a cave under the coral.
11:10He can't see what the shark is doing, and that's when the predator is most dangerous.
11:17Bull sharks are aggressive, territorial, and they don't like to be provoked.
11:22In this video, the diver is doing everything you shouldn't do around bull shark, and the chances of him getting
11:28attacked are really high.
11:32Jack doesn't hesitate.
11:34He grabs his spear gun and quickly slices it free.
11:38Feeling the tug, the deadly shark moves out from under the coral, and thankfully, swims away.
11:46It's a happy ending to a nail-biting chase.
11:50For Jack, it's a personal victory.
11:52So we got the spear gun back, mate.
11:54And in the end, we got the product boys, so it's all worth it.
12:01Our countdown of shocking showdowns returns with number seven.
12:08When two heavyweights are locked in battle, even sitting ringside could be dangerous.
12:17Anchorage, Alaska.
12:19A port city situated next to the Chugash State Park.
12:24Here, a battle for mating rights takes place yearly.
12:28Between some of the world's biggest hooved creatures, enormous and menacing moose.
12:35Weighing over half a ton, moose are the largest members of the deer family, and they can be extremely aggressive.
12:42This is especially true of males during the mating season when they're fighting for access to females.
12:49But not all fights stick to the forest.
12:52Here, a local resident witnesses a dangerous scene.
12:56Two adult moose battling in a driveway in the middle of a suburb.
13:04It's the ultimate contest for dominance.
13:06Equipped with three-foot antlers, one well-placed thrust could seriously injure either behemoth.
13:15During the mating season, male moose have higher levels of testosterone.
13:19They're very aggressive.
13:20These fights can last a long time, and sometimes last until one of the males is killed.
13:27Then, one of the moose gets the upper hand.
13:32He knocks his competitor to the ground, sliding him clear across the driveway.
13:38It's a move so shocking, it scares everyone nearby.
13:43Including the cameraman's only protection, a parked car.
13:49As the car blockade moves, the man recording the match is in serious danger.
13:55The gigantic combatants are charged with hormones.
13:58They won't stop their fight to avoid innocent bystanders.
14:03It could be deadly to get in between two male moose that are fighting like this.
14:07People attacked by moose are usually stomped on, and so they may have broken bones, they may have internal injuries,
14:13potentially even fatal injuries.
14:17Fortunately, the cameraman avoids the danger and captures a world-class title fight too big for any ring.
14:27Our countdown of shocking showdowns continues in a moment.
14:31But first, the most clever strategy to win a fight is turning your enemies against each other.
14:43Russia, home to 20% of the world's forests, but also plenty of high buildings to perch on.
14:50It's a country with many ideal locations for an extremely clever bird, the hooded crow.
14:58Crows are extremely intelligent and curious birds.
15:01And one of the things that makes them unique is that they're the only bird species that will actually use
15:06tools.
15:07So they can use them to dig into tree holes to get things or to help open difficult nuts or
15:13those sort of things.
15:15Crows are said to be on par with primates.
15:19But intelligence doesn't guarantee survival.
15:22In an alley next to an apartment, two hooded crows circle a common threat.
15:28A cat.
15:30They seem to want the cat to leave, but they'll never win a fight against this predator.
15:38But then, another cat nearby is itching to brawl.
15:43And with just a bit of prodding, they could kill two cats with one stone.
15:49Nipping at the white cat's tail, they inch her closer and closer to her rival.
15:55At any moment, the cat could turn on the birds and end their lives.
16:01But instead, their master plan works.
16:07The black cat lunges and the two felines are suddenly in a frenzy.
16:12It's a backyard brawl, and this murder of crows can't get enough.
16:18But they'd better be careful.
16:20If they get too close, this cat fight could turn into a bird hunt fast.
16:27Cats are hunters and love to hunt birds.
16:30But in general, they'll tend to hunt the smaller birds, the songbirds.
16:34So a crow is right about that size that a cat's going to look at it and say,
16:39this may be just too much work and I may actually get hurt by those nails and that beak.
16:49In the end, the black cat chases the white cat out of the area in a hurry.
16:54And with the birds following right behind, it seems their clever manipulation clearly won the day.
17:05Our countdown of the most shocking showdowns continues with number six.
17:12Making a huge entrance has never been so dangerous.
17:20Johnstown, Pennsylvania, a quiet town surrounded by miles of wilderness.
17:26It's an area where city life sometimes crosses paths with wildlife.
17:32Like Pennsylvania's state animal, the white-tailed deer.
17:37There are 1.5 million white-tailed deer in Pennsylvania.
17:41This is about 30 deer per square mile.
17:43The reason there are so many more is that climate change means milder winters.
17:48And that means the deer can reproduce for longer and have more babies.
17:54Early one evening, 14-year veteran bus driver John Porters on his standard route.
17:59He's been down these roads hundreds of times.
18:03I was dropping down the road with one pasture on the bus, and out of the corner of my eye,
18:07I saw this blur.
18:11It's a deer, and it's way too late for John to break.
18:17Next thing I know, there's a crash.
18:21I looked to my right and noticed that there was a deer that came in through the bus.
18:28Deer leap in front of vehicles out of confusion, often killing the occupants and themselves in the process.
18:34In America, white-tailed deer kill about 120 people per year.
18:38That's more deaths than from bears, sharks, or venomous insects, making deer America's deadliest animal.
18:48Unbelievably, even after the powerful collision, the deer stands.
18:53Stunned and confused, it immediately goes into panic mode.
18:57It's frantic to escape, but it has no idea how to get out.
19:02The deer was running around in circles trying to find a way to get out.
19:06I tried to stop the bus as fast as I can, and the newer buses that we have, the door
19:11does not open automatically until you stop.
19:16After several 10 seconds, the bus comes to a halt, and John is able to open the doors.
19:22Now, it's up to the deer to leave.
19:25I was thinking either it's going to try to hurt someone or myself, and I noticed that I had my
19:33window open to the left,
19:35and I was afraid that it might try to jump through the window to get outside the bus.
19:39While a deer's instinct is to flee, if it can't escape, then it will try to fight.
19:44Deer will use their weight, their strong legs, and their powerful hooves to try to kick a predator.
19:50They've even been known to maul people to death.
19:59After several seconds of thrashing, the deer finally gathers its senses, spots the door, and exits gracefully.
20:11Amazingly, only the bus is damaged in the ordeal, for the most part.
20:16I had glass all over my face and my hair.
20:20It would have probably been a split second, and it would have came right through the windshield and hit me.
20:24I feel very lucky to be alive.
20:33We continue counting down the most shocking showdowns.
20:37But first, deny this star the spotlight, and he'll steal it.
20:46Montreal, Quebec.
20:48In this vibrant Canadian city, scenic parks offer locals a bit of nature in an otherwise concrete jungle.
20:56And one local that enjoys these green spaces the most is the squirrel.
21:01Squirrels are scavengers, so they're constantly on the hunt for food.
21:05They'll find it in trees, in bushes, on the ground, even in garbage cans.
21:09And once they've found a consistent food source, they'll keep going back to it until it's empty.
21:15One sunny afternoon, Viva Frye sits down at a picnic table to enjoy the beautiful weather.
21:22He's brought along his camera in hopes of capturing some wildlife on video.
21:28And he doesn't have to wait long.
21:31A squirrel with a mouth full of food happens by.
21:37The cute animal nibbles on her miniature meal, but the snack isn't satisfying enough.
21:44Seeing Viva's camera, she goes in to investigate the shiny object.
21:49And what happens next is shocking.
21:55Out of nowhere, the bushy-tailed rodent grabs the pricey camera.
22:00And makes a run for it.
22:03Squirrels are actually pretty fast.
22:05They can run up to 20 miles an hour.
22:07When being chased by a predator, they'll often run and then bob and weave from one side to another until
22:12they can get up into a tree.
22:16Charging full speed, she claws her way up a tree.
22:20But with Viva in hot pursuit, it's not high enough.
22:27And the chase is on, again.
22:31But the second tree she finds is much higher.
22:34Now, with her prize safely up off the ground, she can sit and savor her victory for as long as
22:42she pleases.
22:43They live most of their life up in the canopies.
22:46They can jump from one branch to the next, even from one tree across to the next.
22:50And once they're up there, they make themselves at home.
22:53If a squirrel takes something from you, there's a pretty good chance you'll never see it again.
23:05Then, as if the squirrel heard Viva's plea, she decides the camera's not food and not worth her time.
23:15She drops it.
23:17Yes!
23:18Right into Viva's waiting hand.
23:22He's lucky to have his camera and the footage.
23:25An unbelievable shot of a sneaky thief's fast getaway.
23:33We return to our countdown of shocking showdowns with number five.
23:39Only the strong survive.
23:41And you don't want to be there when they do.
23:47Usurisk, Russia.
23:50Surrounded by wilderness, this area in the country's far eastern region
23:54is home to some of its largest and most dangerous predators.
23:58Usuri brown bears.
24:01Usuri brown bears can get up to 850 pounds.
24:05Despite the fact that these bears look calm most of the time, they can be extremely dangerous.
24:11If threatened, they will get very territorial, aggressive, and can do a lot of damage.
24:17On wilderness back roads at night, a horrifying scene unfolds.
24:28A massive Usuri brown bear's been run over by an SUV.
24:33He's stuck underneath, but very much alive and growing angrier and angrier by the minute.
24:43As a group watches from a second vehicle nearby, the bear stops pulling, repositions his feet, and starts pushing.
24:55Incredibly, using his legs, the giant animal begins to lift the more than two-ton SUV off the ground.
25:08Brown bears are incredibly strong.
25:10Studies have shown that in a calm state, they can toss around a 700-pound dumpster like a beach ball.
25:17So when they're really worked up, they could probably do a lot more damage.
25:24Suddenly, to everyone's horror, the bear gets loose.
25:31He immediately attacks, destroying the SUV that ran him over.
25:44Then, the huge animal turns his attention to the second vehicle and charges.
25:51The driver desperately races to escape the angry apex predator.
25:58If he catches up, they could all die.
26:02Suri brown bears have powerful jaws.
26:04They can even bite through a cast iron skillet.
26:06They have extremely strong back muscles.
26:09They have four-inch claws on each paw that they can use to disembowel their prey.
26:19Miraculously, the people manage to get away.
26:22Terrified, but unhurt.
26:25Lean to safety.
26:26They learn.
26:27In nature, the strong survive.
26:30But the strongest get even.
26:38Next, in our countdown of shocking showdowns, is number four.
26:43In this monster's domain, you are the daily catch.
26:52Western Norway.
26:53Here, in the cold waters off the coast, lives one of the ocean's most elusive and cunning predators.
27:00The monkfish.
27:02Monkfish are ambush predators that live at the bottom of the sea.
27:06They're dark colored, so they blend in with their surroundings.
27:08They have lures that attract prey animals over to them.
27:11And when a prey animal gets close enough, they open their huge mouth and suck it right in.
27:18After a busy day out in the water, a group of Russian divers returned to shore with the whopper of
27:24a fish.
27:28Unfortunately, this big monkfish has caught one of them.
27:35And a huge fish is showing no signs of letting go.
27:43A monkfish has a really large mouth with a big jaw, and it's got a lot of sharp needle teeth.
27:49These needle teeth are not designed for chewing at all, but for holding.
27:58The men grab metal bars and wooden planks.
28:03An attempt to slowly pry the jaws open.
28:06But the powerful fish holds firm.
28:12Agitated by the boards wedged into his mouth, the monkfish suddenly clamps down.
28:17Hard.
28:18And as its grip gets stronger, the diver feels something deep inside, digging in.
28:31They're called pharyngeal teeth, hook-like fangs inside the throat, designed to take prey in and not let go.
28:49The teeth in the monkfish's throat work like a ratcheting system.
28:53As the monkfish swallows, those teeth in its throat lock the prey item in, so it can't get away.
28:59So really, once something goes into a monkfish's mouth, it's really hard to get it out.
29:13Finally, with the help of his fellow divers, the trapped man manages to pry himself loose.
29:21He walks away with painful cuts, but no major damage.
29:25What do you mean by the monkfish?
29:31For the monkfish, it's a familiar fisherman's tail.
29:36This diver's the one that got away.
29:43Our countdown continues in a moment, but first...
29:48Here's a showdown on wheels.
29:51This speedster's a real road hog.
29:58Cape of good hope, South Africa.
30:01These coastal plains are a speed racer's paradise.
30:05Flatlands, spanning far enough for the fastest on earth to hit top speeds.
30:10And one bipedaling bird trumps them all.
30:15The ostrich.
30:18Ostriches are the biggest, heaviest, and fastest land birds on the planet.
30:23They can reach up to nine feet tall, weigh 250 pounds.
30:27Ostriches are extremely territorial and aggressive.
30:30And if they sense a threat, then they'll start chasing and they'll even attack.
30:36On a casual afternoon ride, a group of cyclists are cruising near the coast.
30:42Zooming along a wide open road, they're able to reach speeds of close to 30 miles an hour.
30:48When suddenly, they've got company.
30:54A huge male ostrich is bearing down and gaining fast.
30:58And if it catches up, they're in serious danger.
31:02Ostrich legs are incredibly powerful weapons.
31:06A single kick can kill a lion.
31:08They have two extremely sharp toes that are used to slice open animals and even disembowel them.
31:15Little by little, the ostrich is closing the gap.
31:21The cyclists shift gears, but it's no use.
31:25The ostrich stays right on their tails.
31:30At any moment, a confrontation seems inevitable.
31:35The men push as hard as they can to peel away.
31:38But escape may be out of the question.
31:41On flatlands, an ostrich can sustain 40 miles per hour for about 30 minutes before it starts slowing down.
31:48In contrast, an average cyclist can sustain maybe about 28 miles per hour.
31:52So if this ostrich wants to catch these cyclists, it can wear them down and catch them with ease.
32:01Thankfully, the men clear the birds' territory just in time.
32:06The speedy ostrich gives up the chase.
32:09But one thing's certain.
32:11These cyclists had better find another place to ride.
32:14This speed demon doesn't share the road.
32:20We continue our countdown of shocking showdowns with number three.
32:26With this traitor in your flock, be ready for a revolution.
32:35Albania.
32:36This rolling countryside is divided between two worlds.
32:40The new and the old.
32:43Here, cars often encounter farmers ushering all kinds of animals down the road, including typically obedient sheep.
32:55A typical flock is led by a ram.
32:58He gets to be the leader by fighting with the other ram.
33:01So he's the most powerful and most aggressive.
33:04And someone you don't want to turn your back on.
33:08On an overcast day, a car drives down a country road.
33:12Approaching a shepherd and her flock, the car slows to let them pass.
33:18But as the shepherd moves to step clear, she turns away from her ram.
33:24And it's a big mistake.
33:28Rams exert a tremendous amount of force when they crash their heads together.
33:32Their skulls are specifically designed with air pockets to act as shock absorbers.
33:37They can hit with over 800 pounds of force.
33:40It's like getting hit by a truck and it can break bones.
33:46Stunned and frightened, the woman fights back, kicking and swinging a stick at the ram.
33:52Trying to distance herself from her assailant.
33:56The ram steps away and turns, but it's just a clever trick.
34:05As the woman gathers her senses, the ram repositions and goes for blood.
34:13When the ram sees her trying to get up again, that's a natural challenge again.
34:20So the ram's going to feel challenged again and want to go after her.
34:24And where's the natural target? Her head.
34:27And that's going to be life-threatening consequences for her.
34:37But the man in the car won't let that happen.
34:41Pulling right alongside the woman and her attacker, he honks his horn and begins exiting his vehicle.
34:48Thankfully, it works.
34:50The ram gives up and runs away.
34:53But the shepherd had better watch her back from now on.
34:57This mutiny of mutton may only be the beginning.
35:05Before revealing what's next in our countdown, here's a showdown you can't shake loose.
35:16Anthem, Arizona.
35:18A desert community where residents enjoy the great outdoors.
35:23With occasional sightings of rattlesnakes, jackrabbits, and one killer feline, bobcats.
35:31Bobcats are the most common wildcat in North America, and they weigh an average of about 20 pounds, which makes
35:38them a little bit smaller than the related lynx.
35:40However, what they lack in size, they make up for by being fierce predators.
35:46Bobcats mainly hunt rabbits and hares, but they're also known to eat small birds, rodents, and even small adult deer.
35:57But here, in a residential neighborhood on the edge of nature, this bobcat might have bitten off more than he
36:04can chew.
36:05Dog got in a fight with a little bobcat.
36:08Feeling threatened, he's attacked a German shepherd.
36:11Latched onto the dog's face, he won't let go.
36:16Like most wildcats, when bobcats hunt, they run, chase down their prey, and go for the neck.
36:22They go for the jugular, because that's the easiest way for the bobcat to disable its prey.
36:28Oh, my God.
36:29Good Samaritans rush to the dog's aid, yanking at the bobcat, trying to pull it loose.
36:35Dog, holy.
36:36But it's not working.
36:39Each passing second puts the dog in more danger.
36:43Let go. Let go.
36:45Oh, my God. Now the bobcat's got stuck.
36:47Then, a turn for the worse.
36:50One of the men attempting to pry open the bobcat's jaws pays the price.
36:56Pick up. Pick up.
36:59The bobcat latches onto his hand, digging deep into his flesh.
37:05Spinning in circles, the predator holds firm.
37:08And with this wild, possibly diseased animal tearing at his hand, the man has more to worry about than tissue
37:16damage.
37:17It's not a good idea to grab a wild animal like this bobcat with your bare hands.
37:22It has very sharp teeth and claws that can tear into you and do some serious damage.
37:26Bobcats very rarely attack people.
37:29So, in this case, this animal being so aggressive may be an indication that there's something else going on.
37:39Finally, the bobcat gives up.
37:42He runs off to hide, leaving the man with a deep cut.
37:46All 9-1-1.
37:47And a terrifying diagnosis at the hospital.
37:51Rabies.
37:53Quickly treated, the man and the dog both survive.
37:56But the bobcat isn't so lucky.
37:59A public health risk, he's captured and euthanized.
38:03A tragic reminder that wild nature and our world should never cross.
38:12Next, in our countdown of shocking showdowns, is number 2.
38:18In this three-way battle, only one can win.
38:25Indonesia.
38:27This country's humid climate produces lush foliage that's a perfect hunting ground for an assortment of slithering, stealthy animals.
38:37Snakes.
38:39In Indonesia, the diversity of animals is extremely high.
38:43And that means for these snakes that there's lots of potential prey items for them.
38:49On a stone walkway, one of these killer serpents, a striped keelback, has managed to ambush a bat.
38:58Now, with its body coiled tightly around its prey, the snake is not letting go.
39:04This bat seems done for.
39:08But while the snake is distracted with the bat, another contender has entered the ring.
39:14Looking closely, these ants aren't just scattering.
39:18They're attacking.
39:20It's an army of carnivorous killers, weaver ants.
39:24And they're putting both the snake and the bat in danger.
39:29Weaver ants, like many ants, are colonial, so they hunt together in a big group.
39:33And these guys have a really nasty bite.
39:35And they'll actually exacerbate the effects of the bite by spraying formic acid on it afterwards.
39:43The killer serpent refuses to let go of its hard-earned meal.
39:48But it's in pain from the hundreds of stinging bites.
39:56The serpent attempts to move the bat away from danger.
40:00But its prey is too cumbersome.
40:04The snake has only two choices.
40:07Release the bat and lose its dinner.
40:09Or stay and finish the job.
40:12Possibly becoming prey for a miniature army of deadly insects.
40:17As a group, they can be really effective at taking down even pretty large prey items.
40:23Because of the way they're willing to sacrifice themselves for the colony.
40:27They're pretty formidable predators.
40:33With the ant army growing, the pain worsening, and the bats still fighting, this meal isn't worth it.
40:43The snake bolts, escaping to the brush and safety.
40:50And as it leaves, amazingly, the bat is still alive.
40:56In this three-way showdown, Strength in Numbers is the clear winner.
41:05We're about to reveal our story number one.
41:08But first, when every showdown's a high-speed chase, think fast, or else.
41:21Maasai Mara, Kenya.
41:23It's a sunny day on the plains, when a safari group witnesses a herd of wildebeests migrating across a shallow
41:30river.
41:32The massive animals run as fast as possible, hoping to avoid any predators lurking nearby.
41:40But as they reach the bank,
41:47they're greeted by a hungry predator.
41:51A lioness on the hunt.
41:54Lions are one of the largest predators in Africa.
41:57They can weigh up to 400 pounds, and even run up to 50 miles an hour in short bursts when
42:03they're chasing down their prey.
42:07The lioness is a skilled hunter, built to capture and kill.
42:12But the wildebeests are a worthy adversary.
42:18As they run, weave, and dodge, the big cat's having trouble focusing on a single beast.
42:25And if she doesn't zero in, it could cost her a meal.
42:33As she patiently waits for an easy target, the wildebeests keep coming.
42:39And soon, the whole herd will finish crossing.
42:44On these plains, missed opportunities can be the difference between life and death.
42:51Lions need about 20 pounds of meat a day.
42:53Every day they're not able to catch food, they'll become weaker and weaker.
42:57Eventually, they're not going to be able to survive.
43:00One wildebeest is more than enough to feed one hungry lion.
43:03It can even feed a small pride.
43:06Then, something incredible happens.
43:09Out of nowhere,
43:12a male lion flies out from behind the lioness.
43:17He charges straight at the wildebeest.
43:25Instantly slamming the animal to the ground.
43:28And after just a few seconds,
43:34Dinner for Two is delivered and served.
43:42It's finally time to reveal our shocking showdown number one.
43:48An epic clash between two powerful titans.
43:55Rinka Island, Indonesia.
43:58Here, Komodo National Park is the fabled land of prehistoric venomous beasts.
44:07Komodo dragons.
44:09Komodo dragons are awesome animals.
44:11They've been around for millions of years.
44:12They are confined to basically just four islands in Indonesia.
44:16They're enormous, so over 300 pounds.
44:18They dominate the islands that they exist on.
44:21The only thing they really have to worry about is other Komodo dragons.
44:25On a visit to the legendary islands,
44:28a wildlife photographer captures something truly incredible.
44:34It's Darwin's survival of the fittest in action.
44:38A Komodo dragon showdown.
44:41And as the 200 pound lizards raise up, the battle begins.
44:46These fights between males can be really aggressive.
44:50They'll use their claws, they'll use their teeth,
44:53they'll whip their tails, they'll do anything they can to overcome their competitor
44:58so that they can be the one that gets to mate with the females.
45:04They're each searching for an opening.
45:08A chance to bite down.
45:11And pierce their enemies neck with razor sharp serrated teeth.
45:19Suddenly, one Komodo dragon raises the stakes.
45:23He spits.
45:24It's not just an insult.
45:26It's an attempt to infect his foe with deadly bacteria.
45:30A slow, painful death.
45:34A Komodo dragon's bite is extremely dangerous.
45:37And the reason that it's dangerous is not just because of the bite force, which is pretty strong,
45:41but it's because they have this secret ingredient to their bite.
45:45They're delivering a toxic mix of bacteria, which then cause systemic bacterial infections.
45:52And then that's actually what kills the prey item.
45:56But as this battle comes to a close,
46:01there's no clear winner.
46:03This time, in the end, the two combatants go their separate ways.
46:08But they'll be back.
46:10In this land of killer reptiles, there will always be war.
46:19They're incredible, aggressive, and always unstoppable.
46:26These shocking showdowns give a glimpse of raw nature like never before.
46:33And more is yet to come on weird, true, and freaky.
