Paul O'Grady: For the Love of Dogs - Season 14 Episode 5
Transcript
00:01No matter how tough the beginning, with the right support around you, there's always a way through.
00:10He's a little bit slobbery, are you alright with that?
00:13I can cope with that.
00:15This week it's all hands on deck as a family of dogs arrive.
00:19Can you guys make us unspeak?
00:21Including one of the most shut down pups I've ever come across.
00:25She's not even looking. What's gonna happen?
00:28And I meet a lively Labrador in need of a groundbreaking operation.
00:34His right leg technically isn't connected to his body really.
00:38Unbelievable.
00:45Over at Intake...
00:47They're so scared.
00:49A mum and her pups have been handed over by an owner who'd become overwhelmed and unable to look after
00:55them.
00:58Can you guys make us unspeak?
00:59Yeah.
00:59And they're not in a good way.
01:01They're going in kennel one.
01:03Let's try and do this.
01:10They're all quite stressed at the minute.
01:12We're just trying to get them in the kennel so they can have some time to decompress.
01:16As far as we understand, they've never been brought outside or handled much.
01:19They're in quite a panicked state at the minute.
01:23He's coming.
01:26The dogs are safely off the van.
01:30It's okay.
01:31But are giving clear signs.
01:36They're just not ready to face the world.
01:48A few days later, the team are trying to help them settle.
01:52Let's just be glad that we had this time.
01:55My dad.
01:56You're so brave.
01:59Behaviourist Nat is overseeing their care.
02:03It's quite a sad situation.
02:04We've got a mum and her three puppies.
02:07And I say puppies, they're two years old.
02:09But they've never left the house.
02:11So coming here, it's such a huge change for them.
02:14Okay.
02:15So who are we going to see now?
02:16So let's go and see Olive.
02:19Hi, Olive.
02:20Hi.
02:21How are you doing, Olive?
02:22So she's one of the ones that's actually come out of her shell possibly the most.
02:26Olive is the mum.
02:28So she's three years old.
02:30She's been having puppies since she was one, which is young.
02:33That's a lot, isn't it?
02:34Yeah.
02:35So she's like cockapooey type mix.
02:37Yeah.
02:37So also she will be quite an active girl if she gets the confidence to explore the outside world.
02:44As mum is Olive, the team are calling them the Forest family.
02:49With her pups also named after trees.
02:52But they are far more shut down.
02:55This is Hazel.
02:56Now, as you can see, she's quite worried at the moment.
02:59Her state, her coat is completely different.
03:01So she needs a groom.
03:02She needs a groom, doesn't she?
03:03Yeah.
03:03And we're not sure some of these guys might even have fleas and things.
03:06So we need to give them a proper groom, get them cleaned up.
03:09Have you seen how her head is literally touching the floor?
03:12Yeah, she's like, I'm really worried.
03:14There's a lot of work behind some of them.
03:16OK, let's leave her.
03:16OK, so in here we've got Ash.
03:19Hello, Ash.
03:20Aw.
03:21He's going up the back.
03:22Oh, he's still a bit scared.
03:23A little bit worried, but you can just chuck a little treat in if you want.
03:27Hello.
03:27Hiya, darling.
03:28Treats need to be given in a calm, non-threatening way, avoiding eye contact.
03:33Just stay sideways on.
03:36Sideways.
03:36And then what we're going to do is just reward that confidence.
03:39There you go, Ash.
03:39There you go.
03:40Low pressure.
03:41Oh, yeah.
03:42He's loving it.
03:43Yeah, come forward, darling.
03:46Ash is showing signs he wants to be friends, but the last pup I'm about to meet is Maple,
03:52the most shut down of all.
03:54What we've had to do with her is made her kennel smaller effectively for her.
03:59So you can see her.
04:00She's just in the corner and she is absolutely petrified.
04:06Oh, God, she's really shut down.
04:08Yeah.
04:08I think this is almost, for me, the saddest.
04:11This is really sad.
04:12Because she's just so overwhelmed by everything.
04:15She's not even looking.
04:17What's going to happen?
04:18So we're going to take our time with her.
04:20Should we leave some food there?
04:21We have put some food down, but she's literally not moving.
04:25Good girl.
04:26She's looked up now.
04:27Oh, she's so beautiful.
04:28She's sweet, isn't she?
04:29Little eyes.
04:30Yeah, good girl.
04:31I've been at Battersea for three years now and this is the most shut down.
04:36Beautiful dog that I've ever seen.
04:38It's actually really sad to see.
04:40Really sad.
04:48Not all dogs struggle with change.
04:51Some have no problems making friends.
04:55Are you going to give it to me?
04:56Are you showboating?
04:59And down the road at Battersea's old Windsor site,
05:03four-year-old chocolate lab George just loves everyone.
05:10Hello.
05:11Oh, my gosh.
05:12He's a bundle of fun, isn't he?
05:14He definitely is.
05:14He's got a lot of energy.
05:15Right, tell me about George.
05:16He's coming to us just because he has a few medical bits going on
05:20and his owners just couldn't afford the medical bills.
05:24So what is the issue?
05:25Well, it's around the back end area, so we're thinking sort of hips.
05:28But is it normal for the breed?
05:30It's quite typical of the breed.
05:32Hip issues are common in Labradors due to their size and genetics.
05:37In some cases, this can significantly impact their quality of life.
05:42Did you want to go for a little walk with him and sort of see how he moves?
05:45Yeah.
05:46Oh, he's got a little waddle.
05:47Yeah.
05:49Look, come this way.
05:51Look, his bum is just going side to side.
05:53Yeah.
05:54Poor thing.
05:55It's quite possible he might need an operation.
05:58So, yeah, he will be going to our London site.
06:01My darling, we're going to get you checked out in London.
06:03You lovely little thing.
06:05All right, George.
06:05Well, I would have called him hot chocolate, if I'm honest with you.
06:09You're my little hot chocolate.
06:10Bye, Alison.
06:11See you later.
06:12Bye-bye.
06:12I believe in miracles.
06:16Where you from?
06:18You sexy thing.
06:19You sexy thing.
06:20You, I believe in miracles.
06:22Back at the Battersea site, the Forrest family have been here a week now.
06:27Little by, little by, little by.
06:29You don't carry.
06:30Little by, little by, little by.
06:31And they're finding special friends to bond with.
06:34Little by, little by.
06:35Coming out of your shell.
06:36Little by, little by.
06:36Hazel, the pup who needed a haircut, has managed to come out of her kennel with her new best friend.
06:43Behaviourist Bex.
06:46To ease her into grooming, the first step is to get her used to the equipment.
06:50Tell me a little bit about Bex, because she seems like she's bonded to you.
06:54She is.
06:54It has taken some time, but she's definitely getting there.
06:57Aw, I love that.
06:59Is that your new friend, my darling?
07:01You can see by her coat, there's some mats that are just down here by the base of her tail.
07:05So what I'm doing is gently introducing equipment to her, so that hopefully we can make her coat a little
07:12bit more comfortable for her.
07:14When grooming an anxious dog, using treats and short sessions are the best way to build trust.
07:20What I have been doing is using the back of the brush, just so that she can know that I'm
07:25there.
07:25But obviously I don't want her to kind of tug on her fur, the bits round her paws and here.
07:30It's quite a bit longer, so I want to be a bit more gentle with that.
07:33Bex, when do you think she'll have her full groom?
07:36Hopefully, within the next few days, I think day by day she'll get a little bit more confident in here.
07:42I can't believe how comfortable she is with her. This is wonderful.
07:45She's great.
07:48Can't pass her, people! Can't pass her! Hit me!
07:51A little patience can go a long way round these parks, whether you're shy and retiring or bold as brass.
07:59How you doing, puppies?
08:00Talking of bold...
08:01Hello.
08:03A few days ago, my gorgeous George arrived from Old Windsor.
08:09Good boy.
08:10Today I'm going to meet him in clinic with Hanla Anya and vet Nora.
08:16Georgie!
08:16Hi, George!
08:18Oh, so good to see you!
08:21So, Nora, how's he getting on here at Battersea?
08:24Well, as you can see, George has settled in very, very happily.
08:27That's good news.
08:28Yeah.
08:29But the thing is, last time I saw him, I could see there was something going on.
08:32Yeah, definitely.
08:33What we suspect is that he's got something called hip dysplasia.
08:38Hip dysplasia is when the ball and socket in the hip joints don't fit properly, causing pain and reduced mobility
08:45over time.
08:47It's likely he's had this for most of his life and it's sadly getting worse.
08:52If I move over to his hips, I can show you.
08:56Good boy.
08:56So, I'm going to try and manipulate them and his legs should allow me to bring him back.
09:01Good boy.
09:02So, as you can see, he was turning round to say, actually, that does hurt a little bit.
09:06Yeah.
09:07So, what do we need to do?
09:08So, we're going to get some x-rays of his hips, but it's likely he's going to need surgery on
09:14both hips.
09:15Really?
09:15Yeah.
09:16So, he's definitely going to be with us for quite a while now.
09:19Oh, okay.
09:20He's like a little human, isn't he?
09:22He's a little bit hypo, doesn't know when to stop.
09:25We have all been to the pub with someone like this, haven't we?
09:28Yeah.
09:28Oh, he's so loving though, isn't he?
09:31You're so beautiful.
09:33I've got you under my skin.
09:38Two days later, Bette Vincent confirms that George's x-rays show that his hip dysplasia is worse than anyone imagined.
09:47I'd say this is about as serious as you can get with a hip problem.
09:50The hip joint is normally like a ball and socket joint, so the ball should fit really snugly in there.
09:57On this side, it's barely touching.
10:00It's been sort of crashing into each other and destroying all the cartilage.
10:05Same sort of thing on the other side.
10:08So, operating is the best option.
10:11It's very rare for us to go down this path of operating on both hips.
10:16As far as I'm aware, in the last five years or so, we've only had three cases.
10:21And so, for me, there's a lot of pressure.
10:24It is a big journey for George, but if we don't do this, he has no quality of life.
10:38Over the past few days, things are looking brighter for most of the Forrest family.
10:44In fact, Mum Olive has done so well that Emily from East Grinstead came to meet her.
10:52And was immediately smitten.
10:55Sit for me. You are so good.
10:58Happy life, Olive.
11:01There we are. Good girl.
11:04Back over in Kennels, me and Ash have been bonding.
11:07Want a little bit from there?
11:09Yeah, well done.
11:10Took it from my home.
11:12And Hazel's finally gained enough confidence.
11:16Confidence is adorable.
11:18To have a proper groom.
11:21Hazel, looking fine.
11:23You should be on Puppy Vogue.
11:24You should.
11:25I think the big question is, I know she's ready for the catwalk.
11:28Is she ready for a new home?
11:31She is ready for a new home.
11:32But whilst it's brighter days ahead for Hazel, it's not good news for Maple.
11:40The most shut down of all the pups.
11:45Maple's obviously quite worried here.
11:47She's not even really taking any of the food that I've offered her.
11:50So she's struggling quite a bit in Kennels at the minute.
11:54Two days later, things go from bad to worse for Maple.
11:58And she's been moved to clinic.
12:01Her refusal to eat or drink anything since she's been here
12:05has led the team to take drastic action.
12:09Maple's been with us because she's been inappetent to not eating.
12:12She's very, very dehydrated.
12:14If a dog isn't eating and has very low hydration levels,
12:18it can lead to rapid deterioration and severe organ damage.
12:23We popped her on some fluids to try and get her hydration levels back up.
12:27And we've just been trying to work towards getting her to eat with us
12:29and hopefully be a bit more confident and happier with us.
12:32I just hope Maple can get through this.
12:43Some days are really great here, especially when a dog grows in confidence.
12:53You're making some big steps, you know.
12:56Yeah.
12:57Hazel's made so much progress that Kevin and Karen from Kent have come to take her home.
13:07And over in Kennel's, her sister Maple is also on the mend.
13:13After 48 hours on the drip...
13:15You can do it.
13:16..her hydration levels have improved.
13:19And she's finally starting to eat.
13:21A big moon is rising.
13:24It's alright, good girl, well done.
13:26So bright.
13:27Now she's feeling better, she's forming a bond with behaviourist Charlotte.
13:32Yeah!
13:33Who's spent hours gaining her trust.
13:35In my home.
13:39Today she's bringing Maple to the chill-out room to work on building her confidence.
13:45I'm actually on the other side of this door because she really isn't ready for, like,
13:51interaction and things like that.
13:53So she's bonded with Charlotte.
13:55Let's see how she's getting on.
13:57Come on in.
13:58Come on.
13:58Good girl.
13:59Hi, Charlotte.
14:00Hiya.
14:00How is she doing?
14:02She's doing so much better.
14:04Once she came off the drip, I just would spend a lot of time sitting in her kennel,
14:08throwing her food, and she just started wagging her tail and approached me.
14:11Really?
14:11And now we're just really trying to expand her world to other people apart from just me.
14:16I mean, all I'm seeing is eyes at the moment peeping over that sofa.
14:21Yeah.
14:21Hello.
14:22She's really trying her best.
14:23Yeah, well done.
14:25Good girl.
14:26So, Charlotte, how do you fancy me just sitting in that chair there?
14:29We could trial it and see how she'll feel with you sitting there.
14:32OK, let's try it.
14:34Let's go.
14:34With a very shut down dog, it's best to avoid any eye contact at first.
14:40Well done.
14:41And as always, treats go a long way.
14:44Good girl.
14:45Well done, Franks.
14:47Ooh.
14:48Steady.
14:49We've got to growl in.
14:50So I'm just making sure that I'm not rewarding at the moment.
14:52I've got to wait for the break.
14:53So clever, Charlotte.
14:55Wow.
14:56Yes, that's better.
14:57So she's not completely overwhelmed because she's taken food off me.
15:00I mean, this is amazing.
15:02I'm literally in the same room as you.
15:03I know it's a big progression for her.
15:05It's so lovely.
15:07Something tells me we may have turned a corner.
15:10There's a new world coming.
15:14This one's coming.
15:15Over in clinic, George is hoping to turn a new corner too.
15:20Good boy.
15:21It's the day of his big operation.
15:25Today's operation for George is all about removing George's hip joint.
15:31It's a ball and socket.
15:32So we effectively remove the ball part of things and allow George's body to create a scarred
15:40attachment between the two areas.
15:42I always get a little bit nervous even if there is success.
15:46After the surgery, we still have to get through the physio hydro components.
15:50So it's like riding two emotional roller coasters at the same time.
15:54Operating on both hips would involve a four-hour surgery.
15:58Ready, two, three.
16:00So today, Vincent will just operate on George's right hip.
16:04There's a lot kind of riding on this operation.
16:08It's okay, you've got it.
16:09This procedure is called an ostectomy.
16:12You need me to adjust how I'm holding.
16:14It involves surgically removing the ball and neck of the femur leg bone.
16:20Like this?
16:21It's perfect.
16:22With his first hip operation complete, George's recovery begins.
16:28One of the things I worry about after this type of procedure is that there's been no nerve damage.
16:32So that's something that we'll only be able to tell in the next couple of days.
16:37But I'll be jumpy for a while.
16:41It's okay.
16:42If your heart is breaking
16:44Cause your dream's not coming true
16:49It's okay.
16:50Leave a little room to start again
16:55Leave a little room to find a friend
17:0048 hours later, George is on high-strength pain meds
17:05And enjoying all the fuss from the clinic nurses.
17:09You good boy, George.
17:10And there's a lot more coming his way.
17:13I'm coming in.
17:15Is that my little chocolate monster?
17:18Hello.
17:19Are we getting a towel wag?
17:21So how is he getting on?
17:22What did you find when you went in?
17:24We basically remove the hip joint.
17:26His right leg technically isn't connected to his pelvis anymore.
17:31But over time, his body will create like a sort of scar tissue and will create stability and strength there.
17:39Wow, that's incredible.
17:40Hello.
17:41Oh, sweet.
17:41I know you.
17:42I know you, but I know.
17:44I know, darling.
17:45So how long will he have to recover before you do the other hip?
17:49I'm going to be looking to see that we have like a positive reaction with the nerves and then I
17:55think we'll try and book in for the second procedure.
17:57Yeah.
17:58Here we go.
18:00He's using his other leg.
18:01Oh, he's standing up.
18:01That's really good for 48 hours after the surgery.
18:04He's even putting his leg down a little bit.
18:06Oh, my God.
18:06Well done.
18:07Which is pretty good because effectively his leg's not attached to his body really.
18:10That's unbelievable.
18:12This is one of those rare surgeries where once we do what we need to do surgically, he needs to
18:18be the one to build that strength there.
18:20So it's all over to him now, but you can do this.
18:24I know, darling.
18:25You fill up my senses.
18:30George has a long road ahead.
18:32We're here.
18:33We're not leaving you.
18:34But I know he's got the spirit and the determination to get through this.
18:44Ash has also been finding his inner brave.
18:48You've come so far.
18:49I'm so proud of you.
18:50He now loves hanging out with his human friends.
18:54Shall we go have a look?
18:54Come on, Anton.
18:56Oh, he's going to have a little walk.
18:58Let's go for a little walkie.
19:00Yes.
19:00Yeah.
19:01Good boy.
19:01Well done.
19:02And there's even been a breakthrough for Maple.
19:06She's now venturing outside.
19:09Let's go.
19:09Oh, here she is.
19:10But as she's still only bonded to Charlotte, I'm watching from a distance.
19:15I know this stakeout looks a little bit extreme, but I just wanted to see for myself if there
19:21was hope for Maple.
19:22Steady.
19:23Oh, she's waggling her tail.
19:24Steady.
19:24Who is this dog?
19:26Good girl.
19:26She's literally so happy.
19:28Aw.
19:29Good girl.
19:29Honestly, this is lovely to see a dog come so far.
19:33It just needs the time, the energy, and the love to come out of themselves.
19:38Oh, thank you.
19:40Well done.
19:41Well done.
19:42Oh, so lovely.
19:44Yes, Charlotte.
19:45Good girl.
19:46It just gives us all hope that she will be fine in a new home.
19:50I can't wait to see her new family and see how she bonds with them.
19:54I'd like to scream.
19:58And how about George?
20:00Well, it's been six weeks since his hip operation, and he looks great.
20:06Come on, pretty baby, let's a move it and a groove it.
20:09Today, he's getting a check-up with Beth Helen.
20:12Just a little gentle feel.
20:14Oh, that's better, isn't it?
20:16George has built up a lot of strength in that leg.
20:18He's had a lot of physiotherapy and hydrotherapy.
20:22Good boy.
20:23We were worried there might be nerve damage, but there's no evidence of that.
20:28Now we can start looking to do the surgery on the other leg,
20:31but we're hopeful that at the end of it,
20:34he'll be able to go off to a nice new home and live his best life.
20:38George Bubbs, you've made me so proud.
20:43There's also great news for Ash,
20:46who's found his forever home with Donna and Kate.
20:50Ash has settled in tremendously.
20:53It's like he's always been here.
20:55He'll come up and he'll kiss me and lay next to me on the pillow.
21:00He's like man of the house.
21:03He loves his walks and he adores my other rescue, Ralph.
21:13I love him so much.
21:16How could you not love this cute little face?
21:19Well, I'm with you on that one.
21:21But what about the most shut down of all the pups?
21:24Maple.
21:25Oh my goodness.
21:27Who is this cuddle bug?
21:29Since you're happy ever after.
21:33New dad Simon and Chris from Kent are completely in love.
21:39Good girl.
21:42It was love at first sight.
21:44She's perfect.
21:45Her lovely soft coat and her beautiful eyes.
21:50She was nervous the first couple of days
21:52and then once she was within these walls and she felt safe,
21:56the familiarity with us was wonderful.
21:59Maple loves to go out for her walk.
22:02Yeah.
22:03Good girl.
22:04I have to say the first time I talked about bringing a dog into this house,
22:08he said if you bring a dog into this house, I'm leaving.
22:10At that point we did have two cats.
22:14So that's nearly 20 years ago, so it's all right.
22:18She's found her forever home.
22:20Maple, you've landed on all four gorgeous paws.
22:26We'll see you next time.
22:27Bye.
