S72 E26 – Bargain Hunt 🎯💰
Transcript
00:00Hello and welcome to Bargain Hunt. Today we're in West Wales, famous for its beautiful castles
00:08and its links to myths, legends and folklore. And according to some it was also home to that
00:14well-known wizard, Merlin. Later I'll be learning about some local traditions
00:21and mysterious objects such as the magic eye and an ancient oak tree. But first let's go bargain
00:28hunting!
00:52Today's Red and Blue teams will be searching for collectibles at this antique centre in the Pembrokeshire
00:57town of Narborough. Both teams have £300 to buy three items with only one hour on the clock.
01:03One item must cost at least £75 and there is my challenge to take care of.
01:09Whoever makes the biggest profit or the smallest loss will be crowned the winners.
01:14Let's meet today's teams.
01:16I'm Adele and I'm Michelle. We're the Welsh Dragons and we're here to play the blues.
01:22That's fighting talk. What kind of team will you be? A successful one? Yes we are, we're going to be the best team.
01:28Who's in charge? Michelle's the boss. I try not to but yeah I think I have problems here.
01:36What will you be looking for? Like a bit of pottery, a bit of silver and we're just really going to go for what we like.
01:42Good plan. Those are the Reds, let's see who they're up against.
01:46I'm Sarah. And I'm Pete. We love wacky and weird. Just look at this beard.
01:54It is impressive. What are you into? Anything to do with cows. Love cows. And I love skulls.
02:02OK. Will you make a good team? I'm going to be aware of the time. And I'll be aware of the cost.
02:08You'll be, yes. The money man. The money. Any tactics?
02:12I'm going to try and find something really, really cheap. Well good luck. Let's get going.
02:18Hello team. How are you? How are you all? All excited, ready to go.
02:24Are you competitive? Oh yes. We're the most competitive team.
02:28Oh I love the fighting tug. Brilliant. Now what's the first thing you need before I set you off?
02:34Money.
02:36Reds, who wants the cash? Me, please. Right. Del, I've got £300 for you.
02:40Blues? Yeah.
02:42Peter, you're going to hide it under your hat.
02:44I could do. There you go. Thank you.
02:47So that means Michelle, you get the challenge. Thank you.
02:50Sarah? Thank you. What's the final thing you need?
02:53An expert.
02:55Two fabulous experts waiting patiently for you. So off you go. Best of luck and have fun.
03:01They've got a great competitive spirit, but what are they looking for in an expert?
03:05Somebody who's knowledgeable.
03:07Somebody who'll keep us in line.
03:09Someone who lets us be the boss.
03:11And a really good negotiator for their bonus bar.
03:13And the sense of humour.
03:15I hope I've got all three.
03:17For the Reds it's Richard Madley.
03:19How are you? Surprise!
03:21Oh!
03:23And for the Blues it's Izzy Barmer.
03:25How are you guys?
03:27Right teams, time to open those challenges.
03:29An item containing red.
03:31That's got to be a lucky colour for us, hasn't it?
03:33So it could be a bit of porcelain, pottery.
03:35An item containing blue.
03:37Ooh, blue for blue team. Excellent.
03:39Go blue team.
03:41Make it snappy teams, your shopping starts now.
03:45Time's ticking, let's go.
03:47We got this.
03:49They're off.
03:50We're shopping.
03:51Clock's on, 60 minutes.
03:53And already the Blues are talking tactics.
03:55So we had a plan to get two really cheap items.
03:59Yes.
04:00Good, I like this plan.
04:01And then a big spend.
04:02And then spend a lot of time on the big spend.
04:04OK.
04:05Well Izzy seems happy with that.
04:07Over with the Reds, Michelle seems something red from my challenge.
04:11That's quite nice.
04:12Yeah, drawn by the colour.
04:13What does it say on the label there?
04:14Opaline.
04:15Uh-huh.
04:16Glass vase.
04:17Possibly made in Italy.
04:18Mmm.
04:1950 pounds.
04:20No, I think that's one I'll possibly pass on.
04:21Richard's not keen.
04:22Meanwhile, the Blues have spotted something that could meet their challenge.
04:24They look like they're probably sapphires.
04:25Shall we get it out?
04:26Shall we ask the dealer for a key and have a closer look?
04:27Yeah, then have a look.
04:28Yeah.
04:29Let's do that.
04:30Whilst the Blues wait for the key, is it time for tea?
04:33An enamel teapot of extraordinary proportions.
04:35That's actually really nice.
04:36Yeah, that's really quirky.
04:37It is, isn't it?
04:38Yeah.
04:39Yeah.
04:40It is priced at £55.
04:41Now...
04:42What do you think is something like that?
04:43I'd want to buy it for about £30.
04:44Yeah.
04:45Yeah.
04:46Yeah.
04:47And hoping to make £10 or £15.
04:48Yeah.
04:49Yeah.
04:50Yeah.
04:51Yeah.
04:52Yeah.
04:53Yeah.
04:54Yeah.
04:55Yeah.
04:56Yeah.
04:57Yeah.
04:58Yeah.
04:59Yeah.
05:00Yeah.
05:01Yeah.
05:02Yeah.
05:03And hoping to make £10 or £15 on it.
05:05Yeah.
05:06But anyway, there it is.
05:07Yeah.
05:08We can look.
05:09It doesn't cost nothing to look.
05:10The pricey teapots are no.
05:12Back to the Blues who are taking a closer look at a ring.
05:15Buy it on.
05:16See if it fits.
05:17It's a nice classic style, isn't it?
05:19It is.
05:20So the bluestones, diamonds, sapphires, particularly diamonds, they are, people do like them.
05:24It's a lot at £159.
05:25Yeah.
05:26Yeah.
05:27What kind of money would that search at auction?
05:28Maybe £60 to £80.
05:29Yeah.
05:30And on a good day, if two people want it, you might get into three figures.
05:32Yeah.
05:33But we are quite a long way off.
05:34Yeah.
05:35We are a long way off.
05:36But what is the best price on it?
05:37I think on this, we could go £130.
05:39You wouldn't go £100?
05:40I don't think they'd go £100, no.
05:42Bad burner.
05:43Good try, Sarah.
05:45Now, what's Richard spotted?
05:47It's actually got a nice old look about it.
05:50Yeah, that is bad.
05:51That's true.
05:52It's easy to ignore it, but often these are the little treasures on these days.
05:58Things that have been covered up or they're lurking beneath.
06:01Why don't we just take the pieces off?
06:03Take them off.
06:04Yeah.
06:05Well, let's have a look at it.
06:06Oh, there's a ticket.
06:08Oh, look at that.
06:09Here is a ticket.
06:11It's a handmade bench and it's £80.
06:15Hmm.
06:16Hmm.
06:17I'd want to be buying that for you for about £40 to try and make you a £20 profit.
06:23Yeah.
06:24OK.
06:25So, thanks very much.
06:26We'll just put it back again.
06:28So, while the reds keep searching, the blues have found this.
06:33The coat rack.
06:34Ah, OK.
06:35So, £120.
06:38It's not old.
06:39It's a modern piece in an older style, but it's certainly got a good look to it.
06:43It's a useful item.
06:45What do you like about it, Pete?
06:48Just its chunkiness, the heft to it.
06:51What do you think?
06:53It's OK.
06:54Would you have it in your house?
06:56No.
06:57Probably not.
06:58You knew Sarah was going to say no.
07:00Yeah.
07:01That's why you like it.
07:02I mean, it's £120.
07:04Yeah, it's a lot of money.
07:05It is a lot of money.
07:06Yeah.
07:07Shall we ask the best price?
07:08No.
07:09No, OK, it's a definite no.
07:10That's definite.
07:11Let's wander.
07:12If it doesn't hook you in, move on.
07:15These look colourful, Richard.
07:17It's a group here of three Persian enamel dishes and bowls.
07:24You know we had to find something with red on it.
07:27If you look hard on this Persian enamel dish, there are flashes of red, aren't there?
07:32Yeah.
07:33And on this shaped oval dish, and again, on this bowl, again, tiny little red flower heads.
07:41The ticketed price for all three, £25.
07:46I'm not sure where it's red and F though, Richard.
07:50No, we've got to satisfy the challenge.
07:53Yes.
07:54The words are an item containing red.
07:56Yeah.
07:57It doesn't have to be hold red.
07:58I don't know if I like them enough.
08:00Mm-hmm.
08:01OK.
08:02Could we come back to them?
08:04I'll go off and just find out if they could be bought for £20.
08:07And if they can be, I'll ask them to put them on hold for us.
08:10OK.
08:11So we've got them on our list.
08:12Yeah.
08:13We could come back later on.
08:14Happy with that?
08:15Yes.
08:16Lovely.
08:17OK.
08:18I'm not sure they're keen, Richard.
08:19Over with the blues, something's caught Pete's eye.
08:21Rather handsome cat.
08:22Do you have cats?
08:24We used to.
08:25We had for many years.
08:27Oh, he's nice.
08:28Have a look.
08:29Have a look.
08:30He's quite handsome, hasn't he?
08:31He's nice.
08:32He's got this crackle glaze on.
08:34I agree, he's nice.
08:36People love cats.
08:37Yeah.
08:38Yeah, true.
08:39Good size.
08:40What's the price?
08:41£48 on the ticket.
08:42Well, why don't we ask the best price and just see?
08:44Because then we know where we're at.
08:45Yes.
08:46Yeah.
08:47OK.
08:48Good point.
08:49Let's ask the dealer.
08:50OK.
08:51Whilst the blues get a price for the cat, the reds have spotted something unusual.
08:55Oh!
08:56The red rolling pin.
08:57Yeah, indeed.
08:58Well, I rather like that sort of type of decoration.
09:03These were made in Nailsea outside of Bristol.
09:07These were made in the 19th century and in fact they're still...
09:10So it is quite old then?
09:11Yeah, yeah, indeed.
09:12Are they just a decorative item or would they...?
09:15Well, no, they were actually used practically.
09:17Oh.
09:18They could have been used in the kitchen for rolling out pastry.
09:21And they were very popular.
09:23Yeah.
09:2410, 20 years ago, I'm not quite so sure today.
09:28I can't see a price on it.
09:30Erm, £60.
09:31I'd say it's marked at £60.
09:33We could get some discount on it, but I think it'll...
09:35You'd have to have a lot of a discount to get a profit.
09:38Yeah, we would.
09:39OK, let's go.
09:40OK, right, OK.
09:41Move on.
09:42Very decisive, Michelle.
09:44Now, what's the news on the cat?
09:46The ticket price is £48.
09:48I think I can definitely do £40 on that.
09:50And the absolute botting price?
09:51What were you hoping for?
09:53I was hoping it might start with a...
09:55Two.
09:56Two.
09:57I can give them a ring.
09:59Yeah.
10:00We'll do that.
10:01Thank you very much.
10:02The cat's not in the bag yet.
10:04And from cats to hats.
10:07There is indeed a red interior in this 19th century bucket
10:12made from a Georgian hat box.
10:15OK.
10:16It looks like a very posh bucket.
10:18Very posh, isn't it?
10:19It's priced at £80.
10:21So I happen to know that the stall holder has said that he would discount anything on this
10:26stand by 30%.
10:29So therefore, with an £80 ticket on it, he's knocking off £24.
10:34OK, I think that's...
10:36OK.
10:37Come on through here.
10:38Anything red through here?
10:39Let's go have a look.
10:40Let's go have a look.
10:41So while they keep browsing, the blues are sticking with their animal theme.
10:46What about this one?
10:47Oh, I see where you're going.
10:48Blue tail.
10:49Look!
10:50Light and containing blue.
10:51And it's red, red and blue for bargain.
10:53Yeah.
10:54Absolutely.
10:55I just think he's cute.
10:56Yeah?
10:57Yeah.
10:58I think he's very charming.
11:00Bit of art glass.
11:01It's a glass paperweight.
11:02Yeah.
11:03But it's nice.
11:04Paperweights went through a phase of being extremely popular.
11:05So they're not always sort of the round ones you think of.
11:08Yeah.
11:09You can get them modelled as animals.
11:10But nowadays, I mean, you could have it on a desk.
11:12But I think someone would just have it as a decorative object.
11:14Perhaps someone who loves bunny rabbits.
11:16Yeah.
11:17What's the price?
11:18So it says ten.
11:20OK.
11:21We're making you work today, Neil.
11:22You are so right.
11:23Would there be anything you could do for us on that one, please?
11:27I'll tell you what.
11:28As is you.
11:29Yes.
11:30I'll go nine.
11:31Ooh.
11:32There's also not a lot of money here.
11:33No, it's cheap.
11:34Ten pounds.
11:35We wanted two cheap items.
11:36We did.
11:37So he ticks that box.
11:38Yeah, he does.
11:39Yeah.
11:40I think there might be a small profit.
11:41On a bad day, it's five to ten.
11:42But on a good day, ten to fifteen, ten to twenty.
11:45We'll take the risk, shall we?
11:46Let's take the risk.
11:47Yeah.
11:48Let's get it done.
11:49Thank you very much.
11:50Back it up.
11:52Thank you, Neil.
11:53Thank you, Neil.
11:54Well done, Blues.
11:55Fifteen minutes into your shop and that's your first item bought.
11:58And it ticks off my challenge of something containing blue.
12:02Now, Adele seems taken by some silver.
12:05Cool little dishes there.
12:07Yes, sweet.
12:08I think they're really decorative.
12:09Yes.
12:10Really, yeah, really sweet.
12:11Very pretty, yeah.
12:12You were drawn to, I could tell.
12:14Yes, yeah.
12:15That's a way.
12:16I really like them.
12:17I think they're really, really pretty.
12:18Yes.
12:19And the work that's gone into them.
12:20With your reaction so far, I feel I've got to go and get the cabinet open.
12:25While Richard finds the key, Sarah has spotted something colourful.
12:30Oh, they'll be Rosenthal, a Rosenthal design.
12:33They used to be collectible.
12:34Oh.
12:35Nowadays, not so much at auction.
12:36OK.
12:37You sort of find that you can have a set of them and they don't do fantastically well.
12:40OK.
12:41OK.
12:42But they're very pretty and decorative.
12:43Very unusual.
12:44But how much are they?
12:45£15.
12:46For each of them, I'd imagine.
12:47Yeah.
12:48It's going to be around that at auction in terms of its value.
12:50Yeah, that's fine.
12:51Yeah.
12:52OK.
12:53Yeah.
12:54Keep looking.
12:55Meanwhile, the Reds are weighing up those silver dishes.
12:58Are they heavy?
12:59Mmm, not very heavy.
13:00No, I thought they'd...
13:01Oh, you thought they'd be heavier, didn't you?
13:02Yeah, I did.
13:03Yes, indeed.
13:04Well, they are silver.
13:05They're solid silver.
13:06I didn't know.
13:07At £68, before we negotiate, and that's at £40.
13:10Yeah.
13:11You liked the little one more, didn't you?
13:12Yeah, I just thought he was picked.
13:14Yeah, indeed.
13:15Yeah, OK.
13:16But would you like to find out where they could be bought?
13:17Yes.
13:18Yeah.
13:19Time to get Neil in.
13:20This one's £68.
13:21I could do £61 on that, and then the smaller one is £40.
13:25We'd go £36 on that.
13:27Does £36 work for you?
13:28£36 isn't an increment in the auction room, so he'd be going £32, £35, £38.
13:34Right.
13:35So £36 would be...
13:36So we would need the extra pound.
13:39I know it's...
13:40I'm splitting hairs, but...
13:41Go on then, £35, Dan.
13:42Thank you, Dan.
13:43So...
13:44So do you think there's a bit more of a profit in the £35 one?
13:47Yes.
13:48That is better value.
13:49What do you think of, Dan?
13:50Yeah.
13:51Yeah, it's right at the top.
13:52I think we have to go for that one.
13:53I could tell you liked it.
13:54As soon as I walked past that cabinet, it made you smile, didn't you?
13:56Yeah.
13:57All of a sudden...
13:58Yeah.
13:59OK.
14:00Shall we buy it?
14:01Yes.
14:02Yes, I agree.
14:03Marvellous.
14:04Thank you very much.
14:05Neil, thank you.
14:06We're going to have the little one.
14:07£35.
14:08Sold.
14:09Brilliant.
14:10The rooms now have one item each.
14:11But with half their time gone, they need to pick up the pace.
14:15Was Sarah spotted for the blues?
14:17It says it's a Welsh fireside stall, I think.
14:21So you could get two bums on there.
14:23Really?
14:24Can you?
14:25Couldn't get two of mine on there.
14:26Well, you'd be facing away.
14:28Right.
14:29Come on.
14:30We're going to test this.
14:31You and me.
14:32Right.
14:33I'll have the big end.
14:34OK.
14:35I'll perch myself this end.
14:36There we are.
14:37Oh, I think we could actually.
14:38There we are.
14:39We can both fit on.
14:40Not that comfy though.
14:41I've got the lumpy.
14:42No, it's not comfy.
14:43I think it's a bench for one.
14:44Yeah.
14:45But it's very nice.
14:46So how much is this one?
14:4888.
14:49Right.
14:50Let's see what Neil's at.
14:51Right, let's ask.
14:52While Izzy looks for Neil, the reds have headed outside.
14:56Oh, look at the crowns.
14:57What do you think?
14:58I do like them.
14:59And I love that rusted, rustic look, don't you?
15:02Yeah, with greens.
15:03I think they're splendid.
15:04I do think they're splendid.
15:05They would be of relatively recent manufacture.
15:08I love the fact that there's three of them there.
15:11Yeah.
15:12I'm hoping we might get more than one.
15:15Yes, yeah.
15:16Aren't you?
15:17Yes, it would be.
15:18I've got no idea how much they are.
15:20No.
15:21There's no price on them.
15:22There's no...
15:23We're looking to spend £75.
15:25Shall we actually go and find out?
15:27Yeah, find out, yeah.
15:28Yeah.
15:29While the reds get a price for the crowns, what's the news on the £88 bench?
15:34Yeah.
15:35I could go down to 79 on that one.
15:38Or do you come down to 75?
15:4075...
15:41Yeah, go on then.
15:4375.
15:44Twisting my arm there, but 75.
15:45We can think about it.
15:46Yeah.
15:47OK, well we know it's here.
15:48We know it's for you.
15:4975.
15:52It's another maybe.
15:54Back to the reds and their crowns.
15:56They're £55 each.
15:58OK.
15:59That's the best price today if...
16:02The best, we could probably take £10 off you today, so £40, £45.
16:08And what if we bought two of them?
16:10We could take another £5 off the two, so it would be £85 for the two.
16:14What are you thinking?
16:15I really like them.
16:16I really like them.
16:17Yeah.
16:18Could you come down a little bit more?
16:20That is the price, I'm afraid.
16:21Yeah.
16:22The two are £85 for the pair.
16:24Yeah, I think that's...
16:25One each, yeah?
16:26Yes.
16:27They're buying something that you both like.
16:28Are we all good?
16:29Yes.
16:30Yes.
16:31So should we say that they're sold?
16:32A deal?
16:33Yes.
16:34Thank you very much.
16:35Thank you very much indeed.
16:36Good job, Reds.
16:37That's your big spend sorted.
16:39£85 for the two rustic crowns.
16:42Just 15 minutes left and, Blues, you've only bought one item.
16:46Are you worried, Izzy?
16:48The shot started really well and we all loved the bunny, but it's gone downhill since then
16:53and we haven't really seen anything that Pete and Sarah love.
16:56I think we might be cutting it to the wire and end up with two hurried purchasers at the end.
17:01So while Izzy cracks the whip, the Reds are focusing on their challenge, an item containing red.
17:07Well that particular colour is referred to as cranberry.
17:11So cranberry glass was introduced in the 19th century.
17:16It's just a nice term for red glass.
17:19Can you just tell me from here how much the vase is?
17:24Yeah.
17:25First quality and it's got ND £30.
17:28That's either no damage or no discount, £30.
17:31I'm feeling that.
17:32Hmm.
17:33But however, I can see you just thinking...
17:36Yeah, it's very decorative.
17:38I think the design is really pretty as well.
17:41And of course we cannot forget our three Persian enamel dishes.
17:46So we've got a shopping list, we've got 15 minutes.
17:49Shall we go and look at one other item to add to a list and then you just choose?
17:53Yes.
17:54Easy as that.
17:55The Reds have a plan.
17:57Now, whatever happened to that glazed cat?
18:00So were you able to find out the best price?
18:03I have and very generously.
18:05She said she'll do it for you for £25.
18:07Aww.
18:08What do you reckon Izzy?
18:09Shall we go for it?
18:10I like it.
18:11I like it.
18:12It's £25.
18:13That's a bargain.
18:14Let's do it.
18:15Excellent.
18:16Thank you Neil.
18:18Cheers guys.
18:19Thank you very much.
18:20Awesome.
18:21Great work Blues.
18:22The ceramic cat for £25 is a perfect second buy.
18:26Well you came here to get a bargain and I think that might be our bargain every day.
18:29Yeah, brilliant.
18:30Just your big spend left to find.
18:32Are you thinking the bench?
18:34I'm thinking the bench.
18:35Let's go and see.
18:36OK.
18:37You only have eight minutes left teams.
18:40Now Reds, what have you got there?
18:42It's almost like one of those sort of whirly gigs isn't it?
18:46Yeah.
18:47A whirly-go-gun.
18:48A whirly-go-gun?
18:49Whirly-go-gun.
18:50A whirly-go-gun.
18:51A whirly-go-gun.
18:52A whirly-go-gun.
18:53A whirly-go-gun.
18:54A whirly-go-gun.
18:55A whirly-go-gun.
18:56A whirly-go-gun.
18:57A whirly-go-gun.
18:58A whirly-go-gun.
18:59A whirly-go-gun.
19:00A whirly-go-gun.
19:01A whirly-go-gun.
19:02I'm sure I don't know we got to find out
19:09well you can do the moving bit you can't do the whirly bit yeah I do like it but if it's not working
19:23yeah leave it then the Blues are back at the bench but are they going to buy it we need to spend 75
19:31it's made in Wales I think we should do it yeah yes thank you thank you thank you very much thank
19:40you well done blues that's your final item sorted and your big spin ticked off 75 pounds for the
19:50wooden bench okay yeah happy brilliant time thank you so you're gonna celebrate yeah with only five
20:00minutes left the Reds are revisiting their back burner items so what's it to be the red bars or
20:06the Persian dishes these in unison a decision at last the three Persian dishes for 20 pounds take
20:16off my challenge nice work right team shopping is over let's put them down yeah let's go and put the
20:24kettle on a cup of tea cup of tea sounds good let's remind ourselves what the red team bought
20:29their first buy was the ornate silver dish for 35 pounds next they bought the two rustic crowns for
20:3885 pounds which was their big spend and they finished their shop with my challenge the
20:46Persian dishes for 20 pounds reds you were a pair of Welsh dragons on fire today weren't you yes now
20:55Richard you were not the boss today no they knew what they wanted no just followed how was it did
21:00you have fun we had a fabulous time we just got so so knowledgeable it was fab let's talk favorites
21:05what was your favorite item Adele my favorite items was the silver trinket dish right I thought
21:10it was beautiful okay Michelle what about you what was your favorite the crowns are my favorite right
21:15okay now that was a big spend item it was yeah okay so do you think they will make the most profit
21:20at auction I don't think so I think the silver trinket dish will make the biggest profit okay Adele what
21:26do you think will make the biggest profit I think the silver dish as well so tell me how much did you
21:31spend in total we spent 140 pound so you've left Richard 160 pounds if you hand it over yeah quite
21:39a lot of cash there Richard there is indeed any thoughts on what you do with it I'm gonna buy
21:45something that isn't quite what it appears on first sight oh I'm intrigued ladies okay so while Richard
21:54goes off to buy his mysterious bonus buy let's remind ourselves what the blue team bought they hopped
22:01into action buying the rabbit paperweight for nine pounds which ticked off my challenge of something
22:05containing glue their second buy was a glazed cat for 25 pounds and they finished with their big spend
22:16the wooden bench for 75 pounds blues you made that look easy you found the challenge quickly you
22:25had lots of options on the back burner did you have fun we had fun okay and how was Miss Balmer with the
22:31shopping fabulous Izzy you look surprised no it was good it started out quite chilled and then we just
22:38had a little rush at the end but all good tell me what was your favorite item Peter cat you're a cat
22:43lover too all right put it there okay Sarah what was your favorite item the rabbit paperweight now the
22:51paperweight was my challenge item yes to buy something that contained the blue but what do you think will
22:56make the biggest profit a cat the cat what about you what do you think oh right so how much did you
23:04spend in total 109 pounds right so you've left Izzy a whopping 191 pounds hand it over thank you
23:13very much I hope you've got big pockets for all of that what are you planning to do I know you were
23:18desperate for some silver so I'm going to see what I can find brilliant well while Izzy goes off in search
23:22of a bonus buy I'm going to learn about some fascinating local folklore across the world every
23:35culture has its own stories and superstitions passed down through generations from mythical creatures and
23:42local legends to magical men and women and in this part of West Wales folklore has played an important
23:49role in shaping history to find out more I've come to the Carmarthenshire County Museum to meet
23:56folklore expert dr. Owen Williams hi Owen lovely to meet you nice to meet you too thank you for coming
24:02now Owen why do you think folklore has been so important to people in this part of Wales a lot of
24:08these stories around folklore are transmitted through the Welsh language it's one way of keeping the language
24:14alive and part of the intangible heritage that makes this part of the world so special well when
24:20you think of folklore you think of stories and superstitions but it can also be linked to real
24:25physical objects like these can't it objects derive a lot of their meaning from the stories that are
24:32attached to them like this for example it looks like part of a tree this is a fragment of an oak tree
24:39that was planted in nearby Carmarthen town and it's grown to be known as Merlin's oak by local people
24:47Merlin as in the wizard that's right yes one thing that's been said is that Merlin made a prophecy about
24:54this tree when Merlin's oak shall tumble down then shall fall Carmarthen town so the people of Carmarthen thought
25:04of it as something sacred but sadly a local man around 1856 decided to poison the tree because local
25:14people used it as a meeting place he lived nearby and got sick of them discussing their affairs every
25:21day and did the tale come true did Carmarthen town fall well thankfully not Carmarthen is still here
25:29luckily now I never knew that Merlin was thought of as being Welsh let alone from Carmarthen there
25:35have been stories dating back over a thousand years that link Merlin to various parts of Wales but
25:43particularly to Carmarthen he would probably have been known more as a physician or a prophet perhaps but
25:52why do we call him a wizard if he was more of a physician or a prophet because he may well have
25:58been somebody who was known as a man of the woods type figure who was able to maybe predict weather
26:06patterns and over time stories got exaggerated and so he became associated with magic because that
26:13seemed to be the only explanation for people back in those times clearly it was a very superstitious
26:20time why do you think that is well at the time of course they didn't have any newspapers or radio
26:27so stories were often the ways in which people came to understand the world and that's how we got
26:34the tales of Merlin that we know so well today were there any folklore beliefs that protected against
26:41evil at the time yes there were many for example this was once known as the magic eye what is it it's
26:50actually a potato with matchsticks stuck into it so what was it actually for well it was actually used
26:58to protect crops okay so this was found in a Carmarthen garden around about 1910 and it was hung over a
27:07patch of peas growing there and it was just believed to have protected them against external threats like
27:15insects birds or even bad weather sort of like a medieval starchy scarecrow that's absolutely right
27:23and this object here had a similar purpose of repelling evil now what is that it looks like
27:29hair is it human hair animal it's actually horse hair horse hair it was found hung up on the back of a
27:37door in a local town called lan only about 20 minutes from here it was said to have been hung at the doorway
27:47to protect against anything evil coming into the property now i'm sensing a theme because you know
27:54this is all about protecting the crops and the home exactly it was incredibly important to people
28:01especially in a rural area like Carmarthenshire now we've talked about these small items but my eyes
28:08being drawn to something magnificent and rather large behind me this cauldron is believed to have
28:14dated back at least to the 1800s in eastern Carmarthenshire it was used by a local wise woman to create
28:23all sorts of herbal remedies salves balms and tonics now when you say wise woman do you mean a witch
28:32well funnily enough no okay there are actually very few reported incidents of witches in this
28:40part of wales and indeed in wales in general women who came up with herbal remedies were known as wise
28:47women and they were very well respected within their communities whereas witches of course were seen
28:54as people to be feared oh and thank you so much for your time i've loved learning about Carmarthens
28:59folklore and its medieval beliefs thank you but now it's time to see if our teams can conjure up any
29:06magic over at the auction
29:10and for today's sale i'm staying in Carmarthens i've come to meet auctioneer ian taylor
29:16ian lovely to see you thank you very much thanks for coming now let's get started we've got some
29:20interesting items here on the table so the reds michelle and adele were shopping with richard and
29:26their first item is this really sweet victorian silver pin dish 1895 birmingham silver what do you
29:34think it's really pretty uh very ornate with a nice pierce decoration there little bonbon dish and
29:40there's always a good market for silver in our auctions sounds good but what's your estimate well
29:45we've only put 10 to 15 pound on it okay well the reds spent 35 pounds on this um i think that's going
29:52to be difficult to achieve i have to be honest with you might be a little lost there more of a retail price
29:57i would have thought so yes now the second item is this quite quirky pair of decorative crown
30:03sculptures would you say that they're fashionable they are we we sell a lot of sort of garden and
30:08rustic furniture okay so what's your estimate uh we've put 30 to 40 on them i i do have a feeling
30:14that they might make a little bit more than that well that would be good because this is their big
30:17spend okay so 85 pounds they've spent on this yeah yeah you never know you never know i think it's
30:24going to be tough i think it's going to be tough to get that much okay well fingers crossed so moving
30:28on to the last item which is my challenge to buy something containing red and there's a set of these
30:33minikari persian enamel dishes they are predominantly blue but there is enough red in there to tick the
30:40challenge so they've been quite clever here what do you make of them uh they are they are quite nice and
30:45decorative um however uh there isn't a huge amount of quality to the pieces and they're quite light
30:52okay so what do you think they'll make at auction uh for the three we've only put 10 to 15 pound on
30:56them right well they got the three of them for 20 pounds which sounds good but fingers crossed we
31:02need a bit more don't we yeah we could get there right okay so that is the red team's items now moving
31:08on to the blue we've got sarah and pete who are shopping with izzy and their first item is the challenge
31:14item to buy an item containing blue and we have ironically a red paperweight rabbit but with a blue
31:22tail so again they've been creative haven't they i think someone's laughing at my challenges
31:28so what do you think of the rabbit i think it's quite sweet actually there's not much age to it
31:32a little modern art class paperweight or desk weight whatever you want to call it what do you think it
31:37will make at auction we've put a guide price of 20 to 30 pound on the rabbit right well that's good
31:42they only spent nine pounds on it right so you can't really go wrong with it can you they will
31:46definitely make a profit on that fabulous now this second item is my favorite because i'm a cat lover
31:53it's this 20th century ceramic study of a seated cat it's looking very peaceful and serene don't you
31:59think it's a good size and it's got this nice sort of salad and glaze which is always popular
32:04so yeah i think it should do all right as a decorative piece so what's your estimate for mr
32:08cat we've put 15 to 20 on the cart okay well it cost 25 pounds which i think is doable for a profit
32:14we're almost there okay the final item is a bit of blacksmith salvage in the form of this bench
32:20it's a really nice piece it's industrial but it would also fit into other interiors as well
32:25okay in terms of money how do you think it will do well again a difficult thing to value it's quite
32:30bespoke there's not many others around so we put 30 to 50 on it okay well this was the blues big spend
32:3675 pounds spent on it okay i think we still have a chance though all right okay you're feeling
32:41hopeful yes okay we're time to head to the rostrum and best of luck thank you very much
32:46at 90 and i sell at 90 online at 90 is the five 90 pounds
32:53reds how are you feeling you're at the auction really excited looking forward to it i'm a bit scared
32:58a bit nervous oh do you know what say no more because your first item is coming up it's your late
33:03victorian silver bonbon dish very sweet very petite 35 pounds spent best of luck what's that worth 20
33:11pound 20 for it 20 is bid online at 20 at 20 at 20 28 28 30 30 pound bid
33:22creeping come on two in the room two in the room i will sell for 30 pound right okay so you bought
33:30that for 35 so for 30 so you're at a small minus five pound loss but you've got your big spend coming
33:36up your pair of decorative crown sculptures now you spent 85 pounds on them 42 pound 50 each let's see how
33:45they do two commission bids putting me in at 35 40 pound i have 42 5 8 50 55 in the room commission's gone
33:5860 65 70 75 80. oh come on
34:05yes 95 pound is bid it's in the room against you online they're an usual 100 110. oh well done are you
34:16done online i'm selling to the room bidder for 110. yes well done we like that yeah so that was 85
34:24pound you spent on it sold for a whopping 110 pounds that's a nice 25 pound profit taking your minus five to
34:31a plus 20. now your last item is your challenge something containing red it's your persian enamel items
34:38three for 20 pounds uh they're decorative aren't they what are they worth 20 pounds 20 for them any
34:44interest online at 20 10 10 10 pound 20 bid online come on at 20 only then it's a maiden bid then in and out
34:54sell for 20. evens well folks you're keeping my numbers nice and easy you bought it for 20 it sold for
35:0320 so your plus 20 remains plus 20. but it's a profit isn't it yeah but it's not finished yet of course you
35:12left richard 160 pounds for his bonus buy do you remember yes right so close your eyes nice and tight
35:20richard off you go get your bonus pie thank you richard over to you open your eyes
35:29and let me show you what i thought was a pottery vase from 20 paces it is in fact an art glass vase but
35:39it's very very stylish it's got that swedish look about it which i obviously liked but looking at the
35:45look on your face you're thinking what has richard bought it's marrow shaped i thought it was a vegetable
35:50yeah so how much did you pay for it richard i paid 16 pounds for it oh and how much do you think it'll
35:58make well to remain consistent i hope it makes at least 20 pounds i think we go for it okay yeah we go
36:06for it we're back yeah fabulous definitely going for it yeah okay the reds are definitely going with
36:11richard's bonus buy but what does the auctioneer make of his marrow vase i quite like it actually
36:18it's got a very good contemporary look about it now what kind of estimate would you put on this
36:22well based on it um there being no maker's mark only 10 to 20. richard spent 16 pounds so that slides
36:29into the middle of your estimate so fingers crossed for a profit i think we have a chance
36:34the good news is the auctioneer likes it he also thought it was pottery until he realized it was glass
36:4010 to 20 pound estimate put on it it's coming up right now best of luck uh we move on to the
36:47unusual continental marrow shaped glass vase good decorator's piece what's that worth 30 pounds
36:5330 for it 20 to go 10 10 10 pound 10 is bid thank you in the room at 10 10 is bid at 10
37:03at 10 final call i'm selling it 12. lovely oh come on fresh blood then we sell 12 only they're all coming
37:11now 15 20 20 22 no you sure 22 of the bids then 22 pound well done that was looking a bit touching
37:22oh there wasn't it right yeah so for 22 a lovely profit of six pound so your plus 20 goes to plus 26 and well
37:30done that's a good result but just keep it to yourself we will we will
37:40blues smiles all round i take it you're feeling happy oh yeah it's so exciting all right well it's
37:46kicking off because your first item the challenge item is coming up something containing blue it's
37:51your red paperweight rabbit with a blue tail nine pounds spent best of luck i've got six commission
37:59bids oh five ten fifteen twenty twenty two pounds it's hopping along fantastic 22 pound i'll take five
38:10at 22 pound then on the commission me to sell the rabbit at 22 well done hoppity hoppity hop so your
38:21nine pound went up to you've made 22 pounds 13 pound profit so your second item is your cat 25 pounds spent
38:28no money at all it's coming up now there we are for all you cat lovers lot 208 what are we looking at 30
38:3520 pounds 30 20 will buy it 20 pounds 10 10 bid i'm up to 32 online 35 38 38 at 38 pound then on the cat for 38
38:49oh yeah right well it's lucky lucky 13 cost you 25 pounds so for 38 so you made 13 pound so your plus 13
38:59went up to plus 26 but we've got the big spend the blacksmith salvage welsh bench 75 pounds spent coming
39:06up now so what are we looking at 100 pounds 100 for it 50 got to be worth that isn't it 50 30 to go then
39:16all the interest 42 is bid online at 42 at 42 and 5 45 48 is bid online come on come on 8 is the 50
39:25at 48 pounds then final call are we done finished at 48
39:34okay well this is this is very interesting here you bought it at 75 so for 48 so you lost 27
39:41yeah so your plus 26 goes to minus one
39:44oh but that surely has to be the easiest pound to pull back come on izzy come on izzy you left
39:52is the 191 pounds for her bonus buy yeah blues close your eyes off you go izzy get your bonus buy
40:00izzy over to you open your eyes
40:03oh so it isn't marked as silver so it's white metal but i suspect it is silver because there's a bit of give
40:11and it's a humpty dumpty bookmark how much was it paid 14 pounds 14 pounds and what do you think it
40:16might make then i would probably say 10 to 20 on a bad day 20 to 30 on a good day go for it go for
40:23it are you going for it blues definitely okay the blues are going with izzy's bonus buy but what does
40:28the auctioneer think of her little humpty dumpty i think it's lovely very unusual item not sure if
40:35it's silver we'll have to call it white metal but it is quite pliable okay what's the estimate on him
40:40we've put 20 to 30. right okay well izzy spent 14 pound i think she got a good buy there i think that's
40:45a really good buy blues the auctioneer likes it he's put an estimate of 20 to 30 pounds on it
40:54as you said is he on a good day now you only spent 14 pounds so fingers crossed you really
40:59more back into profit good luck it's coming up now thank you uh for old humpty what's he worth 30
41:05pounds 20 to go then is he worth 20 20 is bid at 20. well it's a maiden bid of 20. is there two
