A former chair of HMP Liverpool’s Independent Monitoring Board has been jailed after admitting misconduct and conspiracy offences. The court heard she used her trusted position to bring prohibited items into the prison.

00:00A former prison watchdog chairwoman from Highton has been jailed after smuggling cannabis and
00:06other banned items into HMP Liverpool. Helen Spree, 63, was sentenced to five years and
00:11three months in prison after admitting misconduct in public office and conspiracy offences.
00:18Liverpool Crown Court heard she formed inappropriate relationships with inmates,
00:22including life prisoner Dylan Weston. Investigators uncovered messages, sexual images,
00:28and evidence of repeated deliveries. Judge Neil Fluitt, KC, said the offences were deliberate and
00:34involved significant planning. Weston received an additional 12-month sentence,
00:40which he will serve in addition to his minimum life term.
