00:01If you think this is how war sounds, your reporter has bad news for you.
00:05Things have changed and you should be more wary of this sound.
00:12After last week's Russian drone crash into Romanian apartment block,
00:15Moscow offered no apologies.
00:17Instead, Russia's Deputy Security Council chairman, Dmitry Medvedev,
00:22issued a chilling threat.
00:23He warned that because European governments supply weapons to Kyiv,
00:27the citizens of EU states will not be able to sleep peacefully.
00:31So how can Europeans defend themselves from drones?
00:34The EU has an action plan on drone security,
00:37but a leaked document from last week reveals how member states actually plan to put it into practice,
00:43focusing on three key areas.
00:45Number one is stricter identification.
00:48The block warns tighter registration rules so authorities can instantly tell
00:52a harmless civilian drone from a hostile threat.
00:55And second is smarter detection.
00:57Member states want to use advanced sensors and artificial intelligence
01:01to spot incoming drones near critical infrastructure.
01:05And lastly, we have intelligence sharing.
01:07Brussels wants to act as a central hub for coordinating data across the continent.
01:12But here we have a little problem.
01:14National governments insist this sharing must remain strictly voluntary
01:18to protect classified information and avoid duplicating NATO's efforts.
01:22So let's go back to our drone case in Romania.
01:26The Ministry of Defense acknowledged it could not shoot down the drone due to its proximity to people's homes,
01:31and authorities had just four minutes to act.
01:34And as long as the drone security remains primary and national competence,
01:38European governments will operate in silos and citizens will see the consequences.
01:43The Baltic region was rattled by at least six suspected incursions in May alone,
01:48with one incident even forcing Lithuanian president to take shelter underground.
01:52So yes, the EU is trying to work together on securing its skies,
01:56but with threats from Russia, it must build a truly unified defense before it's too late.
