00:22If only you knew how many lives have been wasted in foreign lands.

00:52In the 1970s, the dream of going to Germany as a migrant worker began to burn in Davut's heart like a burning ember.
01:00Everyone was talking about Germany in whispers.
01:04They're hiring workers; those with passports and service records will be eligible.
01:09David would listen to these things secretly, and couldn't sleep at night.
01:13Germany was no longer just a country for him.
01:17Escaping meant leaving a different fate for their children.
01:20But if he had known that one day he would return to that town in a coffin, would he still have pursued those dreams?
01:29Davut lived in a village 5 kilometers from the town.
01:34She was still in her 30s.
01:36In addition to his farming activities in the village, which he had been carrying out for years, he would start working on construction projects in the town every year when his work in the village became easier.
01:45Over time, he had become a sought-after construction worker in town.
01:49When the construction season began, he would leave the village for town, sometimes riding in the back of an open-bed truck, sometimes walking, and work on construction sites.
01:58Over time, he rose to become a master in construction work.
02:02He became the builder of many of the town's wealthy residents' detached houses with gardens, as well as 2- or 3-story family apartment buildings, all requiring specialized craftsmanship.
02:10He even employed workers now.
02:13The relatives he brought from the village, his close circle of friends, and the students who wanted to earn money for school expenses during the summer were now the people Davut provided for.
02:22Although he came and went to the village every day at first, he would spend time at the edge of the new construction they had built, even during the summer months and sometimes in the winter.
02:31They would build themselves a hut and sleep and live there.
02:36Over the years, construction work in the town had significantly decreased.
02:41He wasn't making as much money as before.
02:43There was a boy and a girl, the older one about to start primary school.
02:48He didn't want his children to earn a living doing heavy labor like him; he wanted them to get an education, have a profession, and work as civil servants in the government.
02:58Their children were growing up.
03:00The boy was about to start school.
03:03Their daughter never left her father's side.
03:07David would watch them while they slept every night.
03:09She looks at the calluses on her hands, then at the delicate fingers of her children.
03:14"I hope they don't end up like me," he thought to himself.
03:17Let them bow their heads to the book, not to the ground.
03:20Let their backs sweat from work, not from the sun.
03:23But the reality of the village was bitter.
03:25Most children who finished primary school either had to move to the town to attend secondary school, or they had to walk to and from school every morning.
03:34Those tiny children, orphaned and without parents, had nowhere to eat or drink in the city.
03:39Who would light their stove?
03:41Whose hearts turned pale when the fire struck?
03:44The situation was even more difficult for the girls.
03:46Who would dare leave their daughter alone in the silence of the town?
03:51Would you leave your little children all alone?
03:54Davut had been planning all of this for years, but because of his father's disapproval and authority, he rarely had the opportunity to leave the village or town.
04:04He couldn't find it.
04:05Despite his father's objections, thanks to their acquaintance Mr. Mesut, they had bought a small, old house in town for the future of their children.
04:14Whenever he had the chance, he would repair it here and there and rent it out to a teacher for next to nothing.
04:21Apart from that, at his father's urging, he had spent almost all his earnings on buying land and gardens in the village.
04:29Despite all these hardships, he wanted his children to get an education and escape from having to work as laborers like himself.
04:36He had bought this house solely with this in mind.
04:39One day, while working on a construction site, a headline in the newspaper they were using as a placemat for lunch caught their attention.
04:48Germany was going to hire workers, they said.
04:51He read the details of the news without letting the other workers around him know.
04:55The news report stated that they were hiring miners, construction workers, drivers, and cleaning staff.
05:01When they got back to work after dinner, he couldn't hear the voices of his colleagues or even the questions being asked of him; his longing for Germany kept swirling around in his head.
05:12in his head.
05:14What was he going to be?
05:16He knew nothing about mining.
05:18She was also not at all comfortable with the cleaning job.
05:21Was he going to work as a garbage collector in some stranger's country at this age?
05:25Having spent years working day and night in construction, and even though he no longer wants to do this job, he still considers it his best to go back as a construction foreman.
05:35That made sense.
05:36Throughout the day, all sorts of dreams came and went through his mind.
05:41When he returned to the village in the evening, he went to see his cousin Arif, who had previously worked in the mine.
05:48After all, he had worked in the mine and had a certain amount of experience.
05:52Arif had worked in a coal mine in a nearby town and returned to the village after the mine closed.
06:00Sometimes he would also work on David's construction projects.
06:03He opened up the job opportunity in Germany for Arif.
06:06Arif was also excited when he heard the news.
06:08Because even if he's worked in the mine for years and saved up, he can't rely on ready-made solutions anymore, as you know.
06:14He hadn't worked for 3-5 years, so he was almost out of everything he had.
06:19His children were grown up. They could be considered safe.
06:23During the time he worked in the mine, he educated his children and ensured that each of them had a profession.
06:29His youngest son was also in his final year of vocational high school.
06:33Even if he didn't get into university, he would still have a profession related to woodworking.
06:38He was studying in the furniture department and was a skilled craftsman.
06:41He had a knack for woodworking.
06:43They brainstormed until midnight. How would it work?
06:47They weighed the pros and cons.
06:49What would his children, wife, and father say about this situation?
06:52To whom would he entrust his family?
06:55His father was now old and had completely given up on him after his mother's death.
07:02Who would take care of her if she got sick?
07:03His sister lived in another city, and even visiting her was very difficult.
07:08Could his wife cope with both the children and his father?
07:13To whom would he entrust his family?
07:16His cousin Arif was the only older, knowledgeable, and trustworthy person who came to him.
07:24There was no other way out.
07:25He was quite confused.
07:28Arif and he debated back and forth about the matter throughout the night.
07:32And at the end of the night, they decided to go to Germany together, and in the morning, without even telling their families, they would go down to the town to do the necessary research and seek advice from people they trusted.
07:44They were going to consult.
07:46Davut felt a strange unease after Arif left.
07:49How was this going to work?
07:51He couldn't sleep until morning.
07:54Even though his wife kept asking what was wrong, if he was sick or something, he said nothing.
07:59If he told her, his wife would start crying.
08:01The children will hear, their father will hear.
08:05Thus, the dream of going to Germany would remain a pipe dream, ended before it even began.
08:10As soon as the first rays of dawn appeared and no one else was around, they set off for town as if they were going to work.
08:18They were both very excited.
08:20They walked the 5-kilometer route in less time than usual.
08:24When they arrived in town, life was just beginning to come alive.
08:28Restaurants were open, and the aroma of the town's famous meat soup filled all the streets.
08:34They went into a delicious restaurant and had a bowl of soup each.
08:37Then they spoke to and sought advice from their distant relative Mesut Bey, the jeweler Hacı, and a few other respected tradesmen.
08:44Davut and Arif were relieved by Mr. Mesut's words.
08:48They should not squander what they earn in foreign lands, they should be careful, they should not forget their moral values and that they are Turkish even for a moment.
08:58After receiving the necessary instructions, they set off for the village.
09:03Arif and his wife also had dinner in Davutlar.
09:07After the meal, the excitement and anxiety on both their faces were clearly visible.
09:13When their father left the house for prayer, they mentioned the matter to their wives and children, but they almost regretted it.
09:20Because it was unbearable to witness the weeping of the wives amidst the astonished stares of David's children.
09:27They decided to bring up the subject when his father returned from evening prayers.
09:31Arif was also going to get permission from his uncle, whom he considered like a father figure.
09:35When their father arrived and saw the brides' situation, he realized there was a problem, but he didn't say anything, waiting for them to explain.
09:44David started to sweat.
09:46How was she going to tell her father that they were going to Germany?
09:50How would his father react?
09:52They had dreamed so much, though.
09:55What if they say no?
09:57Where are you going, leaving us all alone here? What will happen to the children? Who will cultivate the fields?
10:05What would have happened if she had said, "How am I going to cope with all this work in my current sick condition?"
10:11David didn't know how to begin; he avoided his father's gaze, stammered, and tried to say something, but he couldn't get to the point.
10:21Arif came to his rescue.
10:23"Uncle, you know, I haven't been able to hold a job for years since I left the mine," he began.
10:30If it weren't for David, we would starve.
10:32Things aren't the same for him either.
10:34Now, contractors are doing the construction work in town.
10:37They are building huge apartment buildings.
10:39We can't possibly compete with them.
10:42"Well," said the old man.
10:43Spit it out!
10:47David's excitement increased even more.
10:50He wouldn't be able to speak.
10:51He didn't want to hear an inappropriate reaction from his father.
10:54His wife intervened.
10:56They're going to Germany to work, Dad.
10:59She said in a tearful voice.
11:01Davut and Arif gave off an air of relief as if they had been overwhelmed by the heat while working on a construction site and had suddenly had a bucket of cold water poured over their heads.
11:11His father suddenly staggered in his seat.
11:13He took a deep breath.
11:15A mixture of curiosity and worry was visibly apparent on his face.
11:21"Hopefully everything will turn out well," he said.
11:24Where did this come from out of nowhere?
11:26They told his father that Germany would be hiring workers from Türkiye, paying them good money, and that they would be earning in German marks.
11:34They said they also spoke with Mr. Mesut and Hacı the jeweler in the town, and that they too had a positive attitude.
11:42His father said nothing, but his displeasure was evident on his face.
11:46"Let's go to the Friday market together tomorrow so I can talk to Mr. Mesut and understand the full story of this matter," she said, and then got up.
11:54His father.
11:55It was late.
11:57Davut and Arif spent the night racing from dream to dream amidst their wives' complaints.
12:03They had to go down to the intersection early in the morning and catch the first vehicle that passed.
12:09Otherwise, it wouldn't have been possible for his father to walk all that way.
12:12They stopped the first truck that came along.
12:14The driver was someone I knew.
12:16Their father got into the driver's seat, while Davut and Arif jumped into the back of the truck.
12:20The weather was just beginning to warm up when they arrived in town.
12:24They headed straight for the delicious restaurant.
12:26It was only around 9:30 when they finished their meat soups and went to the palace café.
12:33Mr. Mesut wouldn't usually arrive at this hour.
12:35They each had a cup of tea.
12:36His father said he would stop by to see the shoemaker Hacı Mehmet, and as he left, he mentioned that Mr. Mesut wouldn't arrive until around noon, suggesting they meet here after prayer.
12:44he said.
12:46As the midday call to prayer was being recited, they turned their attention towards the palace café.
12:49Mr. Mesut had arrived and had even started playing with his friends.
12:52When he saw them, he said, "Come, children, come," and gestured for them to sit beside him.
12:58He asked about his father.
12:59Upon learning that he would arrive after prayer, he signaled the waiter for two teas and continued his game.
13:05After a while, Davut's father appeared at the coffeehouse door, and he stood up, saying, "Oh, Selim Agha, welcome, it's a pleasure to see you here!"
13:14He pulled up a chair next to him and told him to sit down.
13:17Then, after asking permission from his playmates, he approached Selim Ağa.
13:22After exchanging pleasantries, he got straight to the point: "So, what do you think about these kids' situation?"
13:28"Mr. Mesut, you're a man of experience. What do you say about this?" asked Selim Ağa.
13:34Mesut Bey had explained the pros and cons of the matter down to the finest detail, but even he felt a pang of sadness for Selim Ağa.
13:42Seeing the final version of it.
13:43Selim Ağa had grown very old and frail in recent years.
13:48Antibiotics, painkillers, cholesterol medication, blood thinners, herbal remedies, and monthly doctor checkups had taken a toll on her.
13:59With each blood test, various health problems were detected, including heart issues, narrowed neck arteries, sodium deficiency, B12 deficiency, and more.
14:13Lately, he had started experiencing memory problems and wouldn't even go down to town except for doctor's appointments.
14:21But he also realized that Davut and Arif didn't have much left to do in the town and village anymore.
14:29There was no other option but to allow and consent.
14:34God is merciful, Mr. Mesut, the children found a way out this way.
14:38"We have nothing left to say, and if you guide them, God willing, let them seek their fortune there as well," he said.
14:46Then, saying, "Come on, children, it's time for a journey," he gestured for them to get up.
14:52They said goodbye to Mr. Mesut and left.
14:55When they arrived at the village, their wives were waiting for them, full of excitement and anticipation.
15:00That night lasted a little longer than expected.
15:02They had no intention of informing anyone in the village.
15:05However, it was necessary to inform at least their spouses' families.
15:10While Davut and Arif were still thinking this, their wives had already informed their families, and everyone was together for breakfast the next morning.
15:18While the women wept on one side, David's children were trying to understand what was happening.
15:23They went down to the town, boarded the first bus going to the city, and headed towards the Balıkesir Employment and Job Placement Agency.
15:29When they arrived in front of the institution, they found themselves facing other people waiting and forming a queue in front of the door.
15:36They approached the middle-aged man with the briefcase who was talking and explaining things to everyone, and listened to what he was saying.
15:44It explained the required documents for the application and how to submit the necessary applications.
15:48Arif approached him and asked if he could help them as well.
15:53The man was doing this for a fee.
15:55He said that he could help them in exchange for a certain fee.
15:59He told them his office was in the building visible a little further on, and that they should go and wait for him there.
16:05Mr. Mesut himself also said that it would be very difficult for them to handle the paperwork and visa procedures on their own.
16:10He said that there were offices around employment agencies that handled these matters and helped for a certain fee.
16:19They waited in front of the office for a while.
16:22Then the man arrived.
16:24They agreed on a fixed price for them to get their work done.
16:27They handed the man the documents they had brought with them.
16:31However, Davut did not have a transfer fee or a professional qualification certificate.
16:35Adam could arrange a transfer certificate from a local firm in exchange for payment.
16:39Otherwise, he said, she couldn't apply without this document.
16:43Arif had a document proving he had previously worked in the mine.
16:47That document was sufficient for the application.
16:50David accepted the man's offer.
16:52He stated that he would fill out the application forms himself and that they could apply to the institution together.
16:58He told them to come back in a few hours.
17:00Although it was autumn, the weather was still warm.
17:04The famous acacia trees didn't speak a word as they walked towards the tea garden.
17:08They didn't even speak until they had their first cup of tea.
17:11They were both excited and scared.
17:15What if they're not accepted?
17:16What if they go there, can't work under the conditions, and have to return?
17:21They struggled with a lot of unknowns.
17:24Then David,
17:25"I'm feeling really suffocated, cousin," he said.
17:27Let's go out for a walk.
17:29After walking a short distance along the railway tracks, they headed towards the Zanos Pasha Mosque via Milli Kuvvetler Street.
17:35The city's crowds overwhelmed them for a moment.
17:38Zanos and his companions visited the tombs of Mehmet Pasha, Karesi, and Hasan Baba, and recited a Fatiha prayer at each of them.
17:44They also spent some time at the Wrestlers' Coffeehouse.
17:47After a few cups of tea, they walked towards the office of the man who would handle their business.
17:51When they arrived at the office, there were other people also delivering documents.
17:56Adam had Davut and Arif sign the forms he had filled out.
18:00Then he told them to get in line to find workers, adding that he would be there shortly.
18:06They went and joined the queue.
18:07There were 5-6 people in front of them.
18:09The man arrived before their turn.
18:12They submitted their applications without any problems.
18:15They were supposed to have a medical examination the next day.
18:17They informed the village headman via telephone that they would be staying overnight in Balıkesir, and spent that night in a hotel.
18:24They set off for the hospital early in the morning.
18:27They had blood tests, chest X-rays, neurological tests, and many other tests done, and also received a vaccine whose contents they didn't know, from the man who helped them.
18:36They headed to his office.
18:38They handed the man the reports, films, and test results they had received from the hospital.
18:43The man said that his affairs would be resolved within a week or ten days and that he would inform the village headman by phone.
18:50When they arrived in the village, everyone was focused on what they were about to say.
18:54They explained the situation to their father and began to wait.
18:58They would continue with their normal work until they received news.
19:02During the waiting period, they continued to go down to town every day and work on the construction site.
19:07Exactly on the tenth day, when they returned to the village, the village headman said they had received a call from Balıkesir.
19:13It was evening.
19:15If they called now, the office would be closed.
19:18They went down to town early in the morning and looked for the man.
19:21The man was told that his applications had been accepted and that his tickets were ready for the train departing from Istanbul in 3 days.
19:29He told them they needed to come and pick up their passports and other documents from him as soon as possible.
19:35Davut spoke to the construction owner and his foreman and settled his account in town.
19:41They returned to the village together that evening.
19:44This night lasted a little longer than usual.
19:47They were going to leave the next day.
19:49The suitcases were packed; everything that might be needed was carefully considered and placed inside.
19:56Before setting off in the morning, they said goodbye and made their peace with everyone individually.
20:01When David's wife poured a cup of water after them, they both turned around and looked again.
20:08Their noses stung once more, and the sobs they left behind...
20:13Amidst sniffles and intense stares, they walked down towards the road junction.
20:19Was their decision the right one?
20:22Was it worth leaving behind an old man and tearful wives?
20:28Every time you look back, you see the eyes you left behind, your elderly spouses,
20:33If you were to remember your sobbing children and your elderly father, would you embark on such an adventure?
20:40Even after arriving in Balıkesir from their town, countless questions about whether they had done the right thing kept swirling in their minds.
20:49They stopped by the office of the man who handled their paperwork, picked up their passports and other documents, and then walked towards the garage.
20:56A wave of sadness washed over them as they boarded the bus that would take them to Istanbul.
21:01They didn't speak at all during the journey.
21:04Until the bus stopped at the first rest stop.
21:07"Do you feel any remorse?" Arif asked.
21:10It was as if they were waiting for David to say, "Let's go back."
21:13David couldn't answer.
21:15They would both cry if they weren't so ashamed.
21:18They couldn't even drink the tea the waiter left on the table, saying it was from the company.
21:22Dear passengers traveling from Balıkesir and Bursa towards Istanbul.
21:28Your bus is about to depart.
21:30Please take your seats.
21:33They were startled by the announcement, got up, and boarded the bus.
21:36It was almost evening when they got off the bus at the Istanbul Anatolian bus station.
21:41There was still time before the train departed.
21:43They took a taxi to the train station.
21:46They left their suitcases at the luggage storage and wandered around for a while to pass the time.
21:50It was obvious from their demeanor that they were strangers to Istanbul.
21:54They were afraid of being scammed or having their money stolen.
21:57They turned back before they got any further than the station.
22:01The station was crowded, and it was getting even more so.
22:04As the train's departure time approached, the place had become incredibly crowded.
22:08There was a great commotion, with people crying, hugging each other, and running hither and thither.
22:14As the train's departure time approached, officials checked the documents of those boarding one by one before allowing them inside.
22:21After passing through security, they boarded the train.
22:24It was dark, quite late, almost midnight.
22:29There was still half an hour until departure time.
22:32Even after they sat down in the compartment, the bitterness inside them hadn't subsided.
22:36As the train started moving, some people waved, others waved handkerchiefs, some cried, some tried to touch the hands hanging out of the train windows, and some held out small gifts over shoulders to those on the train.
22:48The children and their shared tears touched their hearts.
22:53There was no one to see them off.
22:55They looked outside one last time, then sat back down, both of them crying.
23:00For a moment, both of them considered pulling the emergency brake and jumping out of the train.
23:06But they couldn't.
23:08They couldn't.
23:09Because they had embarked on this journey for their dreams.
23:12Would you do it if you were in their place?
23:15From the moment the train starts moving until it enters the Bulgarian border, there's always a feeling that something will happen and they'll turn back, a mix of hope and apprehension.
23:23They were in a state of remorse.
23:26But as the train moved through Bulgarian borders, the hope of turning back was suddenly replaced by a overwhelming feeling of regret that seized their hearts.
23:36It wasn't working.
23:38They watched the outside world for a while.
23:41There were two other people in the compartment with them.
23:44Surely everyone felt the same way.
23:47But no one dared to tell anyone about their problems.
23:51Sleeping sometimes, sometimes watching the surroundings amidst the clatter of the rails, sometimes enduring long waits for reasons they didn't know, they passed through Bulgaria, then Serbia and Hungary.
24:04Without even realizing what day of their journey it was, they arrived in Germany at dawn.
24:12When they got off the train, they walked towards the banner that had their names on it.
24:15Twenty-one other people boarded the bus that had come to pick them up and set off for their accommodation.
24:23When they arrived at the building, which looked like a converted dormitory and consisted of rooms for two or three people,
24:29The Turkish guide who was leading them along the way said they would be staying there tonight and that tomorrow they would be taken to their workplaces where their employment would be processed.
24:37In what appeared to be the dining hall, they were served pasta, meat and vegetables, and another dish that they couldn't quite make out.
24:46when they put them down,
24:47While many of their friends eagerly ate their meals, Davut and Arif just looked at each other and ate the pasta in front of them without saying a word.
24:55Because even while still in Turkey, and from conversations among their friends on the road, they had formed an opinion that the meat might be pork, raising questions in their minds.
25:07Although the pasta didn't completely fill them up, they were relieved that they hadn't eaten any questionable meat.
25:12But what would they do if the night turned bitterly dark?
25:15They had finished everything their wives had packed for them during the long train journey.
25:20But exhausted from several days of traveling, they fell asleep as soon as they lay down in bed.
25:27After breakfast, when they boarded the shuttle to go to their workplace,
25:33They were now forced to eat the hamburgers and sandwiches they were given, whether they wanted to or not.
25:40As they hesitantly opened the packages, their guide told them not to hesitate to eat the food.
25:48They were relieved when I explained that absolutely no pork was used, and that the Germans paid particular attention to this.
25:55"I wish," said Arif, "we had eaten yesterday's meal too."
25:59They laughed.
26:01Upon arriving at the construction site where they would be working, they gathered in a square where they were informed about who would be working on which job and what their duties would be.
26:08For now, Davut, being a construction foreman, would work on the construction above ground, while Arif would work underground in the mine.
26:19The job description, including start and end times, was provided.
26:23They met the German and Turkish foremen they were responsible for, as well as Mester.
26:29The rest of the day was spent undergoing health checkups and familiarizing himself with the surroundings.
26:35They were placed in a barracks near the construction site where they would be staying for the night.
26:39Even though dinner consisted of meat dishes again, they ate everything that was there.
26:45Before going to bed, they would chat amongst themselves in small groups, and everyone was talking about how those who worked underground earned more.
26:55There weren't many people who worked above ground like David anyway.
26:58During the day, the German man in charge of construction work came to him and, speaking broken Turkish, explained that he really needed Davut, and that Davut needed to work underground.
27:08She had ignored his desire.
27:11Perhaps he didn't understand.
27:12And so the German adventure began.
27:16Davut and Arif stayed in the same cell in the evenings, but in the mornings Arif went underground and his shift ended early.
27:24Both of them had begun to get used to their surroundings as the days passed.
27:30During their weekends off, they would take a tour of the surrounding area to familiarize themselves with the neighborhood.
27:37They were both excited when they received their first pay.
27:41But Arif had received more than Davut.
27:45He also expressed his desire to work underground a few times to earn more, but his request was denied.
27:52Days later, Arif had switched to the night shift, and they could no longer sit and chat for long periods.
27:59And so days, weeks, and even months began to pass.
28:04When their days off coincided, they would call the village headman's house from a nearby phone booth and have their spouses come over to talk to him.
28:13They had spoken on the phone again this week, and although it had been three months since they arrived, it was the first time they had been so upset.
28:20If they weren't so ashamed in front of those around them, they would have hugged each other and cried.
28:26Arif was going to work the night shift.
28:29They returned early.
28:31That night, David had just fallen asleep when he was awakened by the sound of sirens and commotion all around him.
28:46When he came out, everyone was running towards the mine.
28:49He started running in that direction too.
28:52At the same time, he was trying to understand what was happening.
28:55Shouts in German and Turkish were all mixed together.
28:59A cave-in had occurred in the mine.
29:00He called out Arif's name, but there was no response.
29:04He helped with the rescue efforts all night until morning.
29:08There was no news from Arif.
29:10He was asking the survivors of the mine, but he couldn't get an answer.
29:15Morning had arrived, but there was still no news from Arif.
29:18Six people were reported missing, and search and rescue operations were underway.
29:24The following day, towards evening, their friends who had died inside began to be brought out.
29:29He still believed that Arif would survive.
29:33Arif was one of the six missing people.
29:35As evening darkness slowly descended upon the construction site,
29:39One of the two friends whose lifeless bodies were pulled out from below was, unfortunately, Arif.
29:45It closed on her.
29:46My brother, he said.
29:48My brother.
29:50Was this our promise?
29:51What am I going to do now?
29:53Who am I going to tell what?
29:55She was crying and screaming at the top of her lungs.
29:58They had pulled his brother out of his arms for the autopsy.
30:01He had collapsed where he stood as the ambulance sped away from the construction site, its siren blaring.
30:08The next day, accompanied by Turkish guides,
30:10When they went to the hospital to complete the procedures with the German authorities,
30:14He hadn't been able to inform his hometown yet.
30:17What was she going to say now?
30:19By the time we got to the hospital, the consulate, and the airport, it was getting quite late.
30:23He bravely headed towards the phone booth.
30:26The village headman's wife answered the phone.
30:28He asked for the village headman.
30:29Before I had a chance to say anything,
30:32"We heard on the radio that there was a mining accident," said the village head.
30:36Are you all alright?
30:38He couldn't answer.
30:39His throat tightened, his tongue was tied.
30:42With tears streaming down her face and sniffling,
30:45"Uncle Muhtar," he managed to say in a low voice, swallowing hard.
30:48Arif, we've lost Arif, unfortunately.
30:51He couldn't speak again for a long time.
30:53He wasn't aware of how much time had passed.
30:55The time that had passed felt like a lifetime to her.
30:58They will send Arif's body on a flight tomorrow morning.
31:02He managed to explain to the village headman, with great difficulty, that he couldn't come.
31:05The next day, while seeing off Arif's coffin at the airport,
31:09For a moment, he too wanted to jump on a plane and go to Türkiye.
31:12But he couldn't.
31:13He had come here to earn money.
31:15He was going to earn, save, and return for his family.
31:18Besides, she didn't have enough money to travel back and forth anyway.
31:21He called the village head again from the airport and informed him.
31:24Meanwhile, all the villagers had gathered at the village headman's house.
31:27She also spoke to her father and husband on the phone during that time.
31:30Both her father and her husband pleaded and begged her to come back.
31:34But David was determined.
31:36He will return from here with enough savings to save himself and his family.
31:39and with his wife, who will build the house of his dreams in town,
31:43She was going to live there with her children for the rest of her life.
31:47Days, weeks, months passed.
31:50When he completed his second year, he decided to take leave during the Eid al-Adha holiday.
31:56He rented a Mercedes for a month and hit the road back home.
32:00The car's trunk was filled with Milka and Kinder chocolates, shampoos,
32:04She filled her days with Nivea creams, toys, and the cassette player she bought for her father.
32:09Although the bribes he gave to local police in the countries he passed through seemed like a big deal to him,
32:13As they got closer to home, their excitement and bittersweet feelings intensified.
32:17When he finally arrived in the village, everyone surrounded him, trying to welcome him.
32:22But she wanted to visit Arif's grave as soon as possible.
32:26After returning from the cemetery, and once the visitors who had come to welcome him had left, he, his wife, children, and father embraced each other tightly, relieving their longing for one another.
32:34The next day, he drove to town with his children, wife, and father.
32:39Their first order of business was to go as a family to a delicious restaurant to fill their stomachs.
32:43Secondly, he went to the jeweler, a pilgrim, and entrusted him with the marks he had saved.
32:50He took his family to the old, single-story house he had bought years ago.
32:54He had dreams about this place.
32:56He was going to either repair it or demolish it and build a two-story detached house in its place.
33:01He wanted his family to live in town once their construction work was finished.
33:05She wanted her children to commute to and from school from their own homes.
33:09The tenant was home.
33:10He needs to vacate the house within a few months before the construction season begins.
33:14He stated that he would either demolish it and build a new one or renovate it.
33:19Then, while in town, he visited his apprentice, with whom he had worked, and told him about his dream for the house, and they agreed to get the work done.
33:27However, the renovations and new additions needed to be completed in time for the school season.
33:32Because his son was about to start middle school.
33:35When his tenant said they would vacate the house within a week or ten days, he went down to town every day during his leave to procure the necessary supplies.
33:46He's trying.
33:47He was giving instructions to his apprentice.
33:49The following week, after the tenant vacated the property, he himself began dismantling and demolishing parts that needed to be removed for renovations.
33:56He had also stored the necessary supplies in the garden of the house.
34:00The father, his wife, and their children had to start living here before the schools opened.
34:05Although reluctantly, his father was going to rent out the fields in the village to his relatives, in exchange for a share of the proceeds from the harvested crops.
34:14And so the leave was almost over.
34:16It's over.
34:18She filled the car's trunk with local delicacies and set off alone again.
34:22He would no longer be living in a prison cell in Germany.
34:25Before going on leave, he had rented a cheap place consisting of a single room and a kitchen.
34:31After they started living in this tiny place, days turned into weeks, and months into years.
34:37But every 2-3 years he takes leave, comes to Türkiye, spends about a month with his family, and visits their house in the town where they moved.
34:46He would fill in the gaps in his knowledge and then return.
34:49Germany no longer seemed foreign to him.
34:51Since his first leave, he started working underground to earn more money, and after his underground shift he was outside.
35:01He works extra jobs.
35:03He worked as much overtime as allowed and saved money.
35:08He wasn't very interested in what was going on around him.
35:11Finally, years had passed, and he had decided to make a permanent return.
35:16After all, her dream house was finished and she had saved enough money.
35:22The children were now grown up, and his son was almost finished with university.
35:28His father, too, had grown very old and frail.
35:33Although he occasionally wanted to take his wife and children to Germany, he couldn't because of his father.
35:39When he came home on his last leave, he had completed all the repairs to the house in town, had it painted, had the gazebo built, and even had a small ornamental pond constructed in the garden.
35:51While not as magnificent as the homes of the wealthy families in town, his house was still impressive enough to be considered one of the best.
35:58His dream had come true, and the melancholy of autumn enveloped everything, with the yellowed leaves of all the trees falling onto the streets.
36:08And on a gloomy Monday, marked by continuous rain, he went to the administration building of the mine where he worked and announced his decision to return home permanently.
36:19The managers were surprised, but they told him to come back the next morning to get his documents ready and sign them.
36:26Just like when he first decided to work in Germany and couldn't sleep at home in the village, he couldn't sleep that night either.
36:32She packed her suitcases. She watched the outside world from the window, overlooking the plane trees whose leaves were falling one by one, until dawn.
36:39In her new home in the town, she was going to build the life she had dreamed of with her husband, father, and children.
36:44He wouldn't even mind being called "Davut the German".
36:48His only wish was to live a happy life with his family.
36:51He filled three huge suitcases.
36:53The suitcases were once again filled with German chocolate, cosmetic creams, shampoos, and small souvenirs.
37:01He would have to pay extra on the plane because of his excess baggage, but it was worth it.
37:07Would he ever come again?
37:09He stopped by the office in the morning and completed the necessary procedures.
37:13She was free now.
37:14He was returning to his hometown.
37:16But he hadn't told his family or anyone else that he would be returning permanently.
37:21He was going to surprise them.
37:23As soon as he stepped out of the plane's door upon landing at Istanbul Yeşilköy Airport, he took a deep breath.
37:30"Oh!" he said.
37:32Despite the pungent smell of carbon monoxide from air pollution, he thought to himself that the air back home was completely different.
37:41She felt as light as a bird when she picked up her suitcases and got into the taxi to go to the garage.
37:48He immediately boarded the first bus going to Balıkesir.
37:50It was dark when they arrived in Balıkesir.
37:53He couldn't find a bus to town at this hour.
37:56Traveling by train with three huge suitcases wouldn't be easy.
38:01The train also arrived in town after midnight.
38:05A distance of 80 kilometers.
38:07How much would it have cost to take a taxi?
38:10No matter what the outcome, he thought to himself, "In the end, I will be reunited with my family, and the longing that has lasted for years will end."
38:17And he headed towards the taxi stand at the corner of the garage.
38:21She closed her eyes as they got into the taxi and started driving towards the town.
38:26As he arrived in front of his house, his wife and daughter ran out of the garden gate.
38:30The image of them hugging each other, her father watching them through the half-open curtain, came to her mind.
38:36She had finally achieved her dream.
38:39Everything from his first departure from the village to the present day flashed before his eyes.
38:43What pained him the most was sending Arif's body back from Germany.
38:47I wish she had gone to Türkiye with him, despite all the difficulties.
38:51While she was in Germany, this thought had crossed her mind many times, and it had always caused her pain.
38:57Her children, her husband, her father, and Arif's grave kept flashing before her eyes.
39:03As sorrows, joys, and weariness pass one by one before his eyes
39:08He came to his senses with the screeching sound of brakes and found himself tumbling down the floor inside the taxi.
39:20The taxi was tumbling and rolling towards the stream, crashing into rocks and trees.
39:27Chocolates, shampoos, creams, toys, everything was scattered everywhere.
39:33When the taxi crashed into a rock and came to a stop, Davut had fainted and never regained consciousness.
39:41He had many dreams and envisioned spending a lifetime with his children and wife,
39:46He was now silently entering his magnificent house, the epitome of a townsman, in a coffin.
39:53The dreams she had nurtured for years were silently buried beneath the earth along with her.
39:58If David hadn't gone to Germany to leave a better future for his children
40:02And if he had lived in the village with his family, would he have suffered the same fate?
40:08If you were in that situation, would you go abroad to be with your children?
