00:00An international court has ruled that Britain will not have to pay Rwanda millions of dollars
00:06over a collapsed asylum deal.
00:09The controversial plan set up by the prior British Conservative government
00:12to deport illegal immigrants to the East African country
00:16hit legal and political obstacles from the start.
00:20It was eventually ruled illegal by the UK Supreme Court
00:24and was cancelled shortly after Labour Prime Minister Keir Starmer took office in 2024.
00:29Rwanda then sued Britain for over $130 million
00:34claiming it was still owed the money despite the breach of the agreement.
00:39But the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague ruled that Britain was not liable
00:43for two years of outstanding costs from the scheme.
00:47Rwanda's government spokesperson said it respected the tribunal's ruling
00:51and considered the matter concluded.
00:53But she also noted that a dissenting opinion by one of the arbitrators
00:58showed that the issues before the tribunal were complex
01:01and open to different legal conclusions.
