00:00Since my very first moment in the job, I have believed that part of serving well would be to know,
00:09almost instinctively, when the time is right to make way for someone else.
00:15And when that time came, to have the courage to do so, even if to many across the country and
00:22in my party, it might feel too soon.
00:25In my head and in my heart, I know that time is now, that it is right for me, for
00:34my party and for the country.
00:36And so today I am announcing my intention to step down as First Minister and leader of my party.
00:43This decision comes from a deeper and longer term assessment.
00:47I know it might seem sudden, but I have been wrestling with it, albeit with oscillating levels of intensity for
00:56some weeks.
00:57My point is this, giving absolutely everything of yourself to this job is the only way to do it.
01:05The country deserves nothing less.
01:07But in truth, that can only be done by anyone for so long.
01:11For me, it is now in danger of becoming too long.
