00:00Perched high above the Latani River in southern Lebanon, there is a fortress that's watched over the region for nearly
00:06900 years.
00:07It's called Beaufort Castle, or Al-Shakif, meaning the castle of the high rock.
00:14Well, its French name, Beaufort, meaning beautiful fortress, reveals its crusader origins.
00:21Well, built in the 12th century, it's been held by everyone, from Saladin's armies to the Ottomans.
00:27And now, Israeli forces have captured it, and not for the first time.
00:33Well, strategically, the castle dominates the surrounding valleys, and offers commanding views over southern Lebanon and into northern Israel.
00:41So the image of the Israeli flag fluttering above its ancient walls is significant.
00:46Some regard it as symbolic of an expanding Israeli presence north of the Latani River.
00:52Well, Israeli operations have drawn criticism not only from Lebanon, but also from the U.K., from France and Germany,
01:00all of which have expressed concern about Israel's deepening incursion into Lebanese territory.
01:06It also raises questions about a ceasefire that took effect on the 17th of April,
01:11where both Israel and Hezbollah accuse each other of violating the agreement,
01:16while Israeli troops continue to push deeper into southern Lebanon.
01:19Well, the capture of Beaufort Castle leaves many questions hanging over the region.
01:24Is this a temporary military operation?
