00:05We're diving under the sea ice in O'Brien Bay
00:07south of Casey Research Station
00:09in eastern Antarctica.
00:11This is a thriving, colourful world filled with sponges,
00:14sea cucumbers, sea spiders, worms, algae and starfish.
00:18Here we are 30 metres below the surface
00:20where the water temperature
00:21is a chilly minus 1.5
00:23year round and the sea is covered
00:25with ice that is a metre and a half thick
00:28for more than 10 months of the year.
00:30This ice provides protection from
00:31Antarctica's harsh weather conditions
00:33and a stable marine environment that allows
00:35biodiversity to flourish.
00:37This important biodiversity is the focus
00:39of our research into the effects of climate change
00:42and ocean acidification.
00:43Here at the Australian Antarctic Division
00:45we're working hard to ensure that the continent
00:47remains valued, protected and understood.
