Short filmTranscript
00:02G'day, I'm Steve Graham. I've spent my life driving trucks across Australia.
00:10Bloody pain in the arse camel.
00:14It's a tough job. This is a bastard and a bit of road.
00:18Now, we've got a big problem in the industry.
00:21Aussie trucking is at a crisis point.
00:2426,000 drivers are needed to fill a huge labour market gap.
00:28Australia relies on us.
00:30Supermarket shelves will be stripped bare.
00:33They need our trucks.
00:35But now, after decades behind the wheel, a generation of drivers is about to retire.
00:43We have a massive crisis, a driver shortage.
00:47So me and my mates are going to do what we can to pass the torch and get the next
00:51generation ready.
00:52He reckons he wants to be thrown in the deep end, I'm throwing him in at 100 miles an hour.
00:56I think I have a problem.
01:00Living the dream.
01:02This is so bloody stressful.
01:04Come on buttercup, you'll be alright.
01:06I have faith in you.
01:08If the trucks stop, the nation stops.
01:26I'm here in Wollongong and I've come to see Roy Murrell.
01:30He's a rookie that I've taken under my wing.
01:33I want to pass some of my experience on to him.
01:36This bloke is a third generation Aussie trucker and I'm keen to see him go forward.
01:43Well, I bet you'd be Roy.
01:45Hey mate, how are you?
01:46Yeah, good.
01:47Steve Graham.
01:48Roy, nice to meet you.
01:49My name's Roy Murrell and I'm 22 years old.
01:52Pretty well once I've kind of figured out what trucks were, that's what I've wanted to do.
01:56Pop started the business back in 1972 with one truck.
02:00My dad and my uncle, they bought the business off Pop and built the business to where it is now.
02:05We're up to 55 trucks and a bit over 120 trails.
02:11Home sweet home, come on in.
02:17This is what Dad and I built.
02:20Got a granny flat at home.
02:22Had Dad's place on a bit of property with 140 acres out there.
02:29I love the country, so a bit of cattle work.
02:34Make sure, right, that's where you throw your right hand.
02:37Don't mind me shooting.
02:39Dad and I get right into it and go.
02:47Did you get it?
02:48Nah.
02:54This is embarrassing.
02:55I bet the sail's good at this.
02:56Oh, yeah.
02:58Oh.
03:02Yeah, that's...
03:03You meant to hit them.
03:11Oh, yeah.
03:15This is Roy's famous dinner.
03:17The roast pork.
03:18No salad.
03:19Yeah.
03:20No salad, no veggies.
03:21Just gravy.
03:22Yeah.
03:22I got a bit of a job on this week.
03:24Freight, a triple worth of spuds up the Brisbane.
03:28Roy has only had his multi-combination licence for three months.
03:33But this upcoming job will see him driving a triple for the very first time.
03:40Triples, or road trains, consist of a prime mover towing three trailers.
03:48Nah, it's gonna put him to the test, but I'm pretty confident he'll do the job good.
03:52He'll reverse some trailers when he was nine years old.
03:55He's got a passion for the job.
03:57Somehow, I just can work myself up so quick.
04:00Stress levels are gonna be up there.
04:02It's gonna be full on, you know, for me anyways.
04:05So we'll see what happens after this week.
04:08Yeah.
04:09Yeah, as long as I don't f*** this run up, you know, the stakes are pretty high.
04:14Don't know if we're gonna put salad on there, Roy.
04:16Especially being the boss's son, the pressure's on because, you know, everyone's got my eyes on me.
04:22Get out of it.
04:23When was your last time ago, Roy?
04:25Yeah.
04:26Working in our yard, you gotta have really broad shoulders.
04:30Especially me.
04:30Like, I don't think there's one day in my life I don't cop a bit of heat from someone.
04:35Yeah, yeah, that's right.
04:36You're giving me s*** cos I'm the boss's son, mate.
04:38You're driving in the yard, everyone's, oh, look, golden child's here, or, you know.
04:41You just go, I just go, whatever.
04:46Now, mate, this is gonna be your first road train.
04:48First road train, Steve.
04:49Yeah, it's gonna be an eye-opener for me.
04:52When I heard Steve was coming in and there'd be a mentor, like, not blowing wind up the
04:56bloke's arse, but he's one of the, he'd have to be one of the legends of the trade.
05:00Really looking forward to it.
05:02I don't know.
05:03Is it a bit early?
05:04Three months and we're banging you into a road train?
05:06How do you feel about that?
05:07Oh, I'm gonna be alright.
05:12I just wonder, is he overconfident?
05:14I'm gonna give him a little test this afternoon, which might knock the edge off that overconfidence.
05:24Righto, Roy.
05:25Here's the deal.
05:27In order to go forwards, you gotta be able to go backwards.
05:30Yeah, righto.
05:32Righto.
05:33What I want you to do is back this road train back to where you had it parked.
05:38Back down that hill, around several bends, to where those trees are.
05:48Far out.
05:52It's gonna be f***ing hard, I can tell ya.
05:56Best of luck.
06:01Hart's racing a little bit.
06:02Might have to go do a nervous wee before we go anywhere.
06:05F*** this.
06:0746 wheels, three turning points, 40 metres long.
06:13Righto mate, park that thing please.
06:30His control over this back one has started to run out, it's run away from him.
06:35And you can see up the front, he's chasing it up like mad.
06:40And once that angle starts getting too acute like that, you've got no choice but to go forward.
06:50Now what he's just done, is actually a mistake.
06:54He's lost all the ground that he gained.
06:56If you go back right to where you started or further, you're just starting all over again.
07:01You've completely lost it.
07:14F*** me.
07:18The way that truck's revving, it almost sounds to me like there's a bit of frustration going on in that
07:22cab.
07:23It's got all the hallmarks of someone who's getting angry and frustrated with himself up there.
07:31I'm glad I'm not in there.
07:37I don't know about this.
07:45No, no, no, no, no.
07:52Hang on mate, hang on, hang on, just pull up and get out will ya.
07:56No, no, no, no, no, no.
08:02Oh, f***.
08:11All right now, so the plan for the day is head down to Kalgoorlie.
08:15Going to drop this load.
08:18Yeah, my name is Eric Scully, 26, from south of Ireland.
08:23Trucking definitely is in my blood.
08:25My uncle always told me, he said, once you get a little bit of the tar in you, he said,
08:29you just want more and more.
08:30And, well, unfortunately he was right.
08:42Eric is halfway through his first run in a super quad.
08:47After picking up 132 tonnes of iron ore in Walluna, he's en route to Kalgoorlie for delivery.
08:55It's very exciting to go and drive a super quad for the first time.
09:00It is the longest combination setup you will see on roads out here.
09:07It is twice the size of anything I've ever driven.
09:11So, yeah, definitely nervous.
09:14Eric's got good reason to be nervous.
09:16The first half of his run was nothing short of a nightmare.
09:22Eric's got all the qualities that we need in a rookie.
09:25He hasn't got the experience yet.
09:30Matt.
09:30Argh!
09:32What's it doing mate?
09:34Alright, Sam, it might need a delay.
09:38I'll drive one over there for ya.
09:40I'll show ya.
09:44He, drive...
10:01I'm halfway through my first run and so far it's been nothing but problems hopefully
10:08we'll keep it rolling we won't have any problems touch wood
10:15we are now arrived in Kalgoorlie to deliver the payload
10:29we are now entered where we are going to be delivering $14,500 worth of iron ore
10:43now that is my very first load of iron ore delivered in a super quad what an achievement unbelievable
10:59now it's time to roll out and do it again bring it on
11:08Eric is headed back to Waluna to pick up another load
11:12he's halfway through three days of hard slog lugging 15 hours behind the wheel every day
11:23being on the road you have to you have to love it because you're sat here on your own
11:31in a little box with nothing to take your mind off your mind
11:41you face it away from home and you can slowly see home disappearing in the mirror
11:49social media is it's a fantastic tool to distract yourself at times
11:53back in Ireland snapchat is it's our means of communicating
11:57and with trucking inevitably things go wrong so I just started posting it and it was funny
12:01people enjoyed it
12:02oh no don't do it don't do it stay there stay there no no no I did it
12:12unless he's still there still pissing out
12:15f***ing f*** off you f***ing f*** this s***
12:20but yeah it's the the communication aspect of it that really keeps me going
12:26I've met countless mates that see the snapchat go I'm going to be there this evening
12:31let you want to catch up for a pint it makes some fierce connections
12:49and also we've just landed back up in uh welluna so um gotta find a nice place to pack this
12:55rig
12:55and um yeah we'll take it from there in the morning
13:09how do I get in there though I'm thinking maybe that roundabout but am I f***ing pushing it
13:16this is probably going to be as tight as you ever wanted to get
13:26I think we f***ed up
13:36this is yeah we've got a curtain caught on the mud guard
13:44we need to get a fitter over here and knock that out
13:48Roy is halfway through Steve Graham's gruelling reversing test
13:53but he's hit a snag
13:59you're gonna love this
14:06but that still hasn't got your road train parked mate
14:09there's two things here I want you to do
14:11see the angle that you're you're on now
14:14yeah you can't chase it up yep you can't chase it up so do your corrections sooner
14:20yeah righto and don't go as far
14:22if I've come back 20 feet I don't want to go 22 feet to straighten it up
14:27oh yeah
14:27so you might have to do 10 more corrections but you're not going up there every time
14:32yeah righto it's just a just a word of advice
14:39nicely done
14:41yeah you're right on that concrete for a minute straighten it up straighten it up
14:46little correction that's it little correction
14:51yeah you're good you can keep going back
14:58yeah that'll do you yeah that's all right mate that was less than the last one
15:03you're gaining ground
15:09this young bloke's gonna get this
15:11it's not yet
15:20you beauty go Roy
15:26mate you don't just talk the talk all right you walk the walk I'm proud of you
15:30I've put him under a great deal of pressure huge amount of pressure and he's done well
15:42well it's um show day I guess
15:52yeah the nerves are kicking in now
15:57big shoes the field carrying the last name
15:59such a high reputation for the business and we've got such a well-known business
16:04it's like the truck stand out like no tomorrow
16:08pressure's on like you don't want to let anyone down
16:11Roy is traveling to a farm in Hilston
16:14where he'll load 80 tons of potatoes
16:19with a two-day time frame
16:20Roy must freight the spuds a whopping 1,200 kilometers to Brisbane for delivery
16:29these spuds are refrigerated so they're going in refrigerated veins
16:34piles of that coal dark and you can really stick your tongue to it
16:40yeah you can stick your tongue to it
16:43I think I just ripped half my taste buds off
16:48my tongue's bleeding
17:00the potatoes must be transported at 12 degrees celsius with any margin of error resulting in spoiled spuds
17:11that'll answer it
17:14it was set on minus 25
17:17we could have nearly had frosted potatoes for dinner
17:29they can spoil it big time if you um have the motor shut off and you don't pick it up
17:33they start sweating start sweating they start rotting and then there's a whole load of potatoes gone
17:38because of a mechanical failure
17:40yeah it's not what you want
17:47I went to flick it down the long vehicle for a second there
17:51not this time boys
17:54we're going road train
18:01going to cop so much grief for that
18:03putting a spud on the dash
18:10finally first time rolling out of Hilston as a road train
18:19taking everything extra white because I'm still nervous
18:27all right
18:30yeah that's long
18:31that's long
18:37nerves are still up but I'm buckling in we're in it now there's no going back
18:46with over 1,000 kilometers to go
18:49Roy is heading to his halfway point to spend the night
18:56you know the three months I've been driving I've learned you know you've got a lot of time to yourself
19:02I feel like to be a driver you've got to be able to be in your own head
19:06the things I've you know I've gone through in the past couple years of my life
19:10I feel like I can be in my own head space
19:17mum sadly passed away
19:19just coming up two years ago
19:22just a sudden
19:23sudden passing
19:25she just passed away in the sleep
19:29it hit me pretty hard
19:31when mum passed
19:32you know
19:35losing your biggest supporter
19:41but I know she's up there watching and you know not just doing debate
19:48dad proud but they make mum proud
20:06I've been on the road just just nearly on two hours so pull up just up here and check the
20:12temps on the fridges and see if there's anything going on
20:2511.9 degrees
20:2712
20:33hmm
20:37motor's off
20:46that van sitting on 14 degrees
20:50yeah it could be in a world of shitty
21:09so uh yeah we've uh got myself uh into a bit of strife
21:16after spending the night in his twisted truck
21:20Eric's woken to the full horror of his nightmare
21:26as you can see here now
21:27each trailer comes in and in and in and in
21:30it pinches on itself
21:33if I keep coming
21:34that triaxle will effectively scrape off the face of that rock
21:37the very same as the Titanic did the iceberg
21:44thing about these quads is
21:46there is no going back
21:47you can't reverse these
21:49there's seven articulating points in them
21:51three dollies
21:52those dollies don't like to go backwards
21:55they're not designed
21:57to break apart
21:58if you were to disassemble these
22:00Lee you need a fleet of mechanics
22:03and with a setup that's costing
22:051.5 million
22:06we don't want to be doing damage to that
22:10not somewhere you want to be
22:12so yeah
22:16you've got to know when to ask for help
22:17and uh we've reached that point
22:23hello
22:24how are you
22:25not bad Eric you
22:27alright how's better it is
22:29no what's happened mate
22:30I'm after getting the super quad wrapped around the roundabout
22:36righto
22:37that's not much fun
22:40you're on your own here
22:41yeah
22:43don't do your block
22:44the only thing that's going to happen if you do your block
22:46is you're going to hurt yourself
22:48and make things go worse
22:49grit your teeth and stay cool
22:52and mate what have you got around you
22:54what can you use to your advantage
22:57er
22:58there's a couple of machines around the place
23:00can you get on to any of the machines
23:03I could probably get my hands on a key or two yeah
23:05alright stay cool
23:07talk to ya
23:08see ya
23:08bye
23:09see ya
23:13the easiest solution
23:15if I can get a machine big enough
23:17we may be able to drag that
23:20out from the roundabout
23:21which should give us enough space
23:23to come around it
23:29pretty much
23:30that much space
23:32that's where we need to be
23:33to get it out
23:36it'll take persistence
23:37but er
23:38it'll come out
23:39it has to
23:40because we've got to get another load in
23:47right
23:48spoke to the managers here
23:49they have a forklift
23:54beautiful stuff
24:00it is only a two and a half ton forklift
24:03it is a six ton tri-axle
24:06we're going to hope that
24:07it has enough power to move it
24:12but this is a
24:15hoping for a scenario
24:28oh you don't do it to me
24:30don't do it to me
24:41oh why
24:44why are you doing it to me
24:54two hours into the journey
24:55and
24:55we've already got a motor
24:57not running
24:59they start sweating
25:00start sweating
25:01they start rotting
25:02and then there's a whole load of potatoes gone
25:04because of a mechanical failure
25:08the pressure
25:08to complete this job
25:10professionally and efficiently
25:11is high
25:12like
25:13because we've got such a reputation
25:14of on time
25:15you know
25:16product is 100%
25:18especially being the boss's son
25:20the face of the company
25:22just powering down the system now
25:25I'm just having a bit of a thinky
25:29these motors
25:30once they hit temperature
25:32being like an eco
25:34eco sort of motor
25:35they will shut off
25:38it's a fuel saving sort of thing
25:40this is a good sound
25:41this is a good sound
25:42motor's starting
25:43hopefully it'll fire up
25:49starting so that's a good sign
25:51confuses me a little bit
25:52but
25:53we'll
25:54just one more thing to keep an eye on
25:57if not
25:58I'll
25:59I'll be
26:12just a bit of a habit
26:13I've always had
26:14smelly trees everywhere
26:16I hate the smell
26:17of a dirty track
26:29here we are
26:30Kuna Baragran
26:31that'll be me for the night
26:33home sweet home
26:35right next to a couple garbage trucks
26:40and that's us
26:43good rest
26:43we'll recover me
26:44and we'll be right to go tomorrow
27:00got a time slot tonight
27:04at 10 o'clock
27:05so I'm going to be in there
27:06well and truly before 10 o'clock
27:11with the non-negotiable delivery deadline
27:13of 10pm tonight
27:16use of the Toowoomba bypass
27:18is crucial
27:20slashing two hours
27:21off the travel time
27:25the Toowoomba bypass
27:26is shutting at 9 o'clock
27:27for road work
27:28so if I don't get up there in time
27:29I won't be a happy camper
27:34I missed your call
27:36the Toowoomba range
27:37was supposed to be
27:38shutting at 9 o'clock
27:39at the night time
27:40they're shutting it now
27:41at 6 o'clock
27:42at 6
27:45at 6
27:47and yeah
27:47if you're not going to make it
27:48it's going to have to go back
27:49through the town boat
27:50righto
27:51you're going to
27:52explain the arse
27:52trust me
27:53thanks for the heads up
27:54I guess
27:55see you later
27:56bye
27:56bye
28:00pressure's on now
28:01there's no
28:02no relaxed driving
28:04now it's go go go
28:07bit of a truck
28:09traffic out of us
28:11no
28:12enough to get the blood pumping
28:16he's going pretty slow
28:18I'd like to get around him
28:19because I don't have time
28:20to sit around
28:24Roy has never overtaken
28:27in a triple
28:27and to make matters worse
28:29his first overtake
28:31will be another road train
28:33measuring 53 metres long
28:37you know
28:37you can't just
28:38step out
28:39whiz bang
28:40back in
28:41I'm going to need a couple
28:42couple k's at least
28:44to get around
28:45I'll call him up
28:47see if he'll let me overtake
28:50I've got a copy in the R&K
28:52good
28:53chance I might
28:54step out around you
28:55if you don't mind
28:55good
28:56right down through the corner
28:57if you want to do it
28:59righto mate
29:00I'm coming out
29:17oh
29:20oh
29:21that's
29:22this is not fun
29:24the ground is too soft
29:26and the forklift has buried itself
29:32what I'm trying to do here
29:33is create a channel
29:34for that to rock
29:35to get momentum
29:37to get out of here
29:42right
29:55oh you're a good thing
29:57oh boy's head
30:05now we are in a really tight spot
30:07I don't fancy blowing a tyre
30:10not when I have those problems
30:33it's an inch by inch job
30:36but it is moving
30:52just might be enough
31:00okay we've
31:02gotten where we need to be
31:04I think
31:05as you can see
31:06here is the marks
31:07we rolled in on
31:09so effectively
31:10we have claimed
31:10one
31:11two
31:13three
31:14four metres
31:15for the back axle
31:16which is exactly
31:17what we wanted
31:19now we just got a pressure
31:20comes around
31:24oh
31:25oh
31:34you
31:35are
31:35kidding me
31:42right
31:45so
31:46between trying to dig myself out
31:49last night and this morning
31:51and having the truck running for
31:53the air pressure
31:54in the line
31:57I have
31:58I've run out of fuel
32:02it is never ending
32:09hello
32:11yeah
32:13I've run out of fuel this time
32:14so
32:16is there any chance you'll be able to get something out
32:19all right
32:21no
32:21top man
32:22too easy
32:23no I appreciate it
32:25sound
32:26talk to you in a while
32:27good
32:28yeah being stuck here has cost my boss money
32:31if I don't get out of here by midday
32:33I could
32:33could be saying goodbye to the job
32:42hello
32:43how are you
32:44not bad mate
32:45you
32:45yeah it's been the 24 hours from hell
32:48everything that could go wrong has gone wrong
32:50sounds like it mate
32:51sounds like it
32:52so
32:52one of the things that I'm concerned about is
32:55when I do pull it around this embankment
32:57it's about
32:58maybe a foot and a half high
33:00I'm just a bit concerned about the lean on the trailers
33:05is there
33:05is there a risk of it rolling or
33:07I suppose how can I mitigate that
33:11you can't really
33:12the only advice I can give you
33:14is go really really slowly mate
33:16and watch your mirror
33:17and if she looks like she's going to go
33:18just back and back a bit
33:20then you're going to have to stop
33:22too easy
33:23you mind yourself
33:24no you mind yourself Eric
33:25I will do
33:28for the looks of it
33:29this is my diesel landing on
33:32it's been a long morning
33:33I just want to get back on the road
33:42all right
33:43when you're ready
33:44let her in
33:52living the dream
33:54it's dream is it

34:15this is holy water from Noc
34:17back home in Ireland
34:18see if it has any effect
34:21with the luck of God
34:22fingers crossed
34:30don't like that sound
34:32come on
34:40please
34:50please
34:51oh
34:53please
34:55wouldn't start
34:56so we're going to try and prime it again
34:58and see
34:59what we can do
35:02been in better spots
35:03I'm after getting the super quad wrapped around the roundabout
35:07now it's just a matter of actually getting out of it
35:12let's try it again
35:14and see what happens
35:18come on
35:24I feel like she wants to
35:30please
35:37yes
35:41we got it boys
35:43I am the king of the road
35:47oh what a bit of a nice
35:50right
35:52brakes release
35:53air pressure up
35:54tip locks in
35:55no reason
35:57no reason it shouldn't roll
35:58time to put it in drive
36:00and see what happens
36:20oh it is tight
36:22it is tight
36:23it is tight
36:27okay
36:27where are we looking
36:31I'm just a bit concerned
36:33about the lean on the trailers
36:37get these big blocks out of the way
36:39which in theory
36:40probably would have made more sense
36:41when I went down at first
36:43but here we are
36:45and yeah
36:46she should just roll across the dirt here
36:48and
36:49out the gap
36:53I am
36:55100% confident
36:56that she's going to roll out on this attempt
36:5990%
37:24let's get out of here
37:32I actually got out of it
37:34like
37:36I thought it was going to be like
37:38a bulldozer job
37:40and a loader to drag it out
37:41and a crane to lift up
37:44whatever
37:45but
37:47we persisted
37:48and persisted
37:49and persisted
37:50it's a testament
37:52as to what persistence will get you
37:57to deliver my first load
37:59I felt accomplished
38:01but to be able to get out of it
38:03on my own
38:05that was the real accomplishment I felt
38:08it's just a phenomenal feeling
38:29he's going pretty slow
38:31I'd like to get around him
38:35I've got deadlines to make
38:36with this Toowoomba bypass
38:37closing at 6
38:40chance I might step out around you
38:42if you don't mind
38:42it's good
38:43it's good right down through the corner
38:44if you want to do it
38:46pardon mate
38:47I'm coming out
38:55pass
38:56you're at the triple
38:57yeah
38:58right
39:00I'll hang back here
39:01if you want me to do mate
39:02it's all good
39:14they know they're going slow
39:16and as soon as some bigger and larger
39:18wants to come around them
39:19oh no
39:20not having him in front of me
39:24now I've got to try and make it in the market
39:26and I've got deadlines to make
39:28with this Toowoomba bypass
39:29closing at 6
39:31and sitting by these blokes
39:33doing 80 kilometres
39:34in a 110 zone
39:36is really starting to get under my skin
39:41it's f***ing bullshit
39:46I'm coming in the middle of Marin now
39:48hopefully one of these blokes in front of me
39:50pulls off
39:50so we can get a wriggle on
39:52and stop burning time
39:59I'm at the box cutter here
40:00he's just pulled off
40:01and I don't know what he's about to do here
40:05he's going to let me come past

40:30I'm already running pretty well on my time frame
40:34copying the road train
40:36northbound out of Mill Marin
40:41copy all mate
40:42in the road train
40:43with the flight on
40:47doesn't want to talk at all

41:51the first experience
41:53it wasn't the best
41:54first experience
41:54but
41:56I've got no words for it
41:58he's a f***ing tool
42:06we're just turning left
42:07onto the Toowoomba bypass
42:09now
42:14coming through the roadworks now
42:16so
42:16made it a pretty good time
42:17and a bit of a weight lifted off my shoulders
42:20I've only got one other deadline to meet
42:25this run has shown myself that I can do it
42:30always a little bit of doubt
42:32in myself
42:33what if I can't do it
42:35here I am
42:36grinning from ear to ear
42:38doing mum proud
42:40and I can hear her voice now
