00:00This afternoon at approximately 2.40pm, a violent extremist undertook a terrorist attack
00:08on innocent New Zealanders in the Newland Countdown in Auckland.
00:13The attack began at 2.40pm and was undertaken by an individual who was a known threat to New Zealand.
00:23The individual was under constant monitoring and it was the police surveillance team and special tactics group
00:33who were part of that monitoring and surveillance that shot and killed him
00:38within, I'm told, the space of roughly 60 seconds of the attack starting.
00:44What happened today was despicable. It was hateful. It was wrong.
00:48It was carried out by an individual, not a faith, not a culture, not an ethnicity,
00:56but an individual person who was gripped by ideology that is not supported here,
01:01by anyone or any community.
