00:00Welcome to Florida.
00:02Florida life, nothing quite like it.
00:04Home to theme parks, golden tans and 400,000 Brits.
00:09I absolutely love it here.
00:10Who've made the Sunshine State their new home.
00:13This is what sold me out.
00:14Yeah, like, because it's stunning.
00:16Who wouldn't want to live here like this?
00:18They've swapped drizzly winters and gas bills for new careers
00:22and seemingly endless fun in the sun.
00:25Cheers, big ears.
00:27It's our little piece of paradise.
00:28Get it right and life in Florida can be like a dream come true.
00:33Every evening do this with your glass of wine.
00:35But getting here and staying here takes hard work.
00:39I do pinch myself every day.
00:41Grit.
00:42We've just lost the starboard motor.
00:44And determination.
00:45Good job, well done.
00:46These are the Brits who've made their own Escape to Florida.
00:55Today on Escape to Florida, proud Scotsman Huey is at serious risk of upstaging the bride.
01:02There's nothing worn under the coat.
01:04When he officiates at a vow renewal ceremony on the family ranch.
01:08That was a good scene, huh?
01:12Lester-born actor and Undertaker's wife, Sarah...
01:15It's gorgeous casket, that is.
01:17...gets stage fright as she prepares her performing arts school for an important charity gig.
01:22I'm a bit stressed.
01:24I'm just stressed.
01:24Bar building grandfather Gary downstools to be a tour guide.
01:29Let's go see some dolphins.
01:32But Florida's most famous sea creatures aren't playing ball.
01:36We've been on the boat for about 20 minutes now.
01:39No dolphins yet.
01:40I need my money back if I don't see the dolphins.
01:51Horses are big business in Florida.
01:53Year-round sun and state tax breaks means it's a great place to open the stables.
01:59And that's exactly what Laura and her parents, Diane and Huey, did near the town of Groveland
02:05after emigrating from Scotland 20 years ago.
02:08We didn't have the stables to start with.
02:10The horses were turned out around the house.
02:14You were sitting drinking your coffee in the morning over here.
02:19And you're taking a sip of the coffee and you look and the horses right up at the window.
02:26It's just grew arms and legs since then.
02:28The stables are now home to 26 horses.
02:32Some of them rescues, which Laura rehabilitates and trains.
02:37Nice, yes.
02:38All done.
02:39As well as their stables, their 65-acre ranch includes a tiki hut they rent out for parties
02:46and a separate wedding venue.
02:48This is the land of opportunity.
02:50If you can work for yourself, you can be on your own property and working with your family,
02:56the people you know, you love and you trust.
02:58It's a win-win situation.
03:01It's yet another hot Florida summer's day.
03:05And the family are busy preparing for the latest event at their wedding venue.
03:09So we're setting up today for a vow renewal that is happening tomorrow.
03:16Not the wedding, the weeding.
03:19Laura and her parents have held 15 wedding events of up to 280 people at their property.
03:26The receptions are usually held in a marquee, but tomorrow is a smaller affair on the venue's
03:32Tuscan patio.
03:33The patio is fabulous for an intimate wedding.
03:37It's a lovely setting.
03:39You're undercover.
03:40You're out of the sunshine.
03:41It is too, too hot to be out in the elements at this heat.
03:47I mean, it's not like Scotland.
03:49You've got the rain, the wind, you've got the snow, and that's just on a Thursday.
03:55Laura's already prepping tomorrow's reception dinner,
03:58using a larder containing the crown jewels of great British cuisine.
04:03So not just a regular pantry, it is literally like a walk-in wardrobe.
04:09We do like some of the staples from back home, definitely.
04:12Bovril Bistow, you've got Worcester sauce, you've got HP sauce.
04:17There are just certain things in life you can't live without.
04:20There's usually some Heinz beans, but they're obviously gone.
04:24Huey's obviously been at them.
04:26They've always used caterers in the past, but this is a smaller event,
04:30and it's the first time Laura has taken on all the cooking herself.
04:35The main course is beef bourguignon or chicken florentine.
04:39Both of them need to be prepped, marinated and left overnight.
04:44Laura is a great cook.
04:46I've got the enviable task of being the taster.
04:51I do enjoy cooking.
04:53I don't enjoy cooking under stress.
04:55This is a three-course plated meal for 30 people.
04:59I could burn it, you know, there's...
05:01I've got 30 times the risk.
05:05Mum Diane is working to a tighter deadline,
05:08as another couple's coming to view the estate in just a few hours,
05:12as a potential venue for their own wedding,
05:14and she wants to show it off at its very best.
05:18Cloths will need to come back off to be ironed,
05:20but I just want to cover the tables just now and put out one place setting
05:24so that they can see an idea of what it's going to look like.
05:28Time is off the essence.
05:30But the muggy conditions mean her efforts are coming unstuck.
05:34Heat index at 180 to 110 today.
05:38It's so hot that the decorations are starting to fall off.
05:42We use a special decor tape.
05:45It's exceptionally sticky,
05:46but because of the heat, literally that tape is melting.
05:51Oh, the panic sets in.
05:54The panic sets in, but what can you do?
05:57We'll just put them up,
05:59and hopefully they'll stay up.
06:00If they don't stay up,
06:01we'll just need to put them back up tomorrow.
06:1130 miles east of sweltering grove land,
06:15Orlando is a tourist hotspot
06:17with a booming entertainment industry
06:19that offers plenty of opportunities for talented Brits.
06:23But that's not what drew Lester-born actor and singer Sarah here in 2001.
06:29What brought me to Florida was a man.
06:33Mr. Doug Dobbs, my husband.
06:35I met Doug in a show in Hastings.
06:38He walked into the dressing room,
06:40and I can honestly say it was like, poof,
06:43instantly fell in love with him.
06:45He was a ballet dancer.
06:47He'd been in TV shows, commercials, and a singer.
06:50So we had a lot in common.
06:51It was quite a few hours later,
06:53and after quite a few drinks,
06:54that I found out that he actually owned a funeral home.
07:05Of all the dreams that I had growing up,
07:08I never dreamed,
07:09I want to marry a mortician.
07:12Never!
07:13It's not very sexy, is it?
07:16It's a gorgeous casket, that is.
07:18Next year, this will be my 50th year in the funeral.
07:23I got into it really young.
07:25I never fit the persona.
07:28How's it look?
07:31Doug's no regular undertaker.
07:33Oh, no.
07:33Because at night, he swapped his funeral suit
07:36for a pair of blue suede shoes
07:38or a glittering jumpsuit in his Elvis or Neil Diamond tribute acts.
07:42Sometimes he takes little breaks from the funeral home,
07:44and he will go on tour.
07:46And he's also a Dane,
07:47so he can actually marry people as Elvis as well.
07:51Sarah left London's West End and a job as a TV presenter and followed her heart to Orlando,
07:57where she began forging a career in show business,
08:00on stage and screen, and in the big theme parks.
08:03It was a big gamble.
08:04It was a risk.
08:05But here I am, 24 years later.
08:08Oh, it's a bit lopsided.
08:09Yeah.
08:10Off is it.
08:12I still do voiceovers, commercials, two to three plays or musicals a year.
08:18I'm also a host of a shopping channel, and occasionally I work in a funeral home
08:23and help out with dead people.
08:27So that is something I definitely didn't do in England.
08:30Oh, I like the rose gold.
08:32It's an album, mine's been real gold.
08:34With mine, the diamond.
08:36I can have one ordered and sent to the house, if you like.
08:40Baths away from the funeral parlour,
08:42Sarah's main job these days is running a performing arts school.
08:46Hi, guys.
08:47Come on in.
08:48Hi, Libra.
08:50Hi, Parker.
08:51From the upstairs of her home.
08:54Hi, Molly.
08:55Come on in.
08:57It's zip, zap, zap.
08:59If you get it wrong, then you're out.
09:01Everybody go.
09:02Zip, zap, zap.
09:03I coach young, professional children and adults.
09:08Zip, zap, zap, zap.
09:12How is he?
09:14Voice coaching, acting coaching, getting an agent,
09:17just nurturing to help them be successful.
09:21Two toads, totally tired, trying to trot to Tisbury,
09:28which is a place in England.
09:29Let's be British.
09:31Like Mary Poppins.
09:32Two toads, totally tired, trying to trot to Tisbury.
09:36Faster.
09:37Two toads.
09:38This morning is the last group rehearsal
09:40for a very special charity show
09:42that they will be performing later tonight.
09:45I am organising a cabaret.
09:48I'm doing it to raise money for families
09:50dealing with pediatric cancer.
09:53It's curtain up at 7.30,
09:56and Sarah still needs to perfect each student's individual act.
10:00Sad group.
10:01Students are really excited,
10:03but I am concerned
10:04because we don't have the luxury of time.
10:06You know how much pressure we've got on
10:09to get rehearsals done?
10:10Yeah!
10:11But you know what?
10:12The most important thing is
10:13you guys have a fabulous time.
10:15This event, this puts me a lot of stress,
10:17but it's all going to be worth it
10:18if we can make some good money for the charity.
10:21So, yeah.
10:22No pressure.
10:23No pressure.
10:25No pressure.
10:36Conveniently placed just 30 minutes from Orlando,
10:39the booming satellite town of Davenport
10:41has become a worldwide hotspot
10:43for sun-loving Brits.
10:45Thank you, ma'am.
10:46You're welcome.
10:48And Yorkshire couple Gary and Maria
10:50are midway through fixing up a bar they're managing
10:52to quench the thirst of the town's new inhabitants.
10:56Taps and Corks is our new venture.
10:59It's a big bar restaurant,
11:004,500 square feet.
11:02We've got that butcher's block to do today.
11:04There's a lot of new builds in this area,
11:06so it's got every potential to make a great success.
11:10We're going to make it an American sports bar,
11:12burgers, wings, NFL games,
11:14of course, premiership and championship games as well.
11:17For us Hull City fans, yeah,
11:18you've got to watch Hull City.
11:20Gary and Maria first came to Florida
11:22on holiday from Hull as a young couple in the early 90s.
11:26We met at the bar in town
11:28and he asked me if I'd like to dance.
11:30The rest is history, isn't it?
11:31Yeah, here we are.
11:33Married 32, but been together 37 years.
11:36That's why I went grey early on.
11:40Being a long slog.
11:44In 2007, they made the move to the Sunshine State for good
11:47with their young daughters, Rhea, 12,
11:50and Dorothy, who was just turning six.
11:53It's about having a better life for the girls.
11:56It did take a bit of persuading there.
11:57Yeah, she got me drunk on absinthe
11:59and was looking out at him, Florida.
12:01And the next morning, when I woke up,
12:02I had an email from a realtor.
12:04So off we went on our little travels.
12:08This is all prepped now,
12:10ready for its coat of lacquer.
12:12Their daughters are both now married and live locally.
12:16Rhea and Darcy have recently made Gary and Maria grandparents
12:19for the third and fourth time,
12:22within just days of one another.
12:23I love our grandkids, love them.
12:26Family is everything to us.
12:29This is the pool room.
12:31Looking pretty good in here.
12:32It is.
12:33Gary's had to be a jack-of-all-trades to provide for his family.
12:37Back in the UK, I used to do a bit of pipe fitting,
12:39so I thought this was a good design.
12:41A bit of industrial look.
12:42And the couple have been willing to try their hand
12:45at almost anything in Florida
12:47in search of their American dream,
12:49including cleaning, property management and pool maintenance.
12:52We've all done things what we didn't expect to do over here,
12:56but you just get stuck in and do it, don't you?
12:57Absolutely, yeah.
12:59The benefit's absolutely well worth it.
13:01This is my kitchen.
13:03This is where all the magic happens.
13:07Maria will be running the bar's food when it eventually opens.
13:11When it gets busy, it's going to be hussle and bustle.
13:14It's going to be really hot,
13:15but that's just because I'm hot stuff.
13:18Maria works two jobs
13:20and will be bringing her six years' experience
13:22at the nearby Best of British pub to this new bar.
13:27I'm here most days.
13:29I work at the Best of British most evenings.
13:31She's a superwoman.
13:33I'm going to try and keep both jobs going,
13:35just because I really love it there.
13:37You have such a good banter.
13:38Gary's also got a side hustle.
13:41Too small for my gorilla hands.
13:43I don't want to spoil my manicure.
13:46I'm a tour guide as well.
13:48I'm doing a couple of tours a week,
13:50Clearwater Beach, NASA Space Centre,
13:52Crystal River Swim with the Manatees.
13:54Tomorrow, Gary hangs up his tool belt
13:57and puts on his tour guide hat
13:59to lead a dolphin-spotting boat trip off the Gulf Coast.
14:03In Florida, hard work pays off,
14:05so it's important not only for ourselves,
14:07but for the future of the grandkids and the kids.
14:10You've got to make that buck.
14:11Never rest.
14:20An hour north in Groveland,
14:22Laura and her parents are still battling
14:24Florida's summer heat and humidity
14:26as they continue preparations
14:28for tomorrow's wedding vow renewal event.
14:31That is very hot.
14:33If you take a look up,
14:34you'll see that the heat is bringing all the decor down.
14:37The family are keen to grow the wedding side of their business.
14:41Hi.
14:42Hi.
14:42How are you?
14:43I am good.
14:44Welcome to Southern Belle.
14:46So, despite the sweltering conditions,
14:49Mum Diane is showing the venue to more prospective clients.
14:55This is the pavilion, the altar area.
14:58Sorry it's not dressed, but it gives you an idea.
15:01Laura can personally vouch for the estate as a setting to tie the knot.
15:06The wedding venue was born out of my own marriage, my own ceremony to Freddie.
15:12Laura's marriage to husband Freddie was the first to be held here seven years ago.
15:18This is the area where you would be married.
15:20You can choose anywhere on the estate,
15:23but this is the most popular place.
15:25The backdrop is...
15:26Yes.
15:27Yeah.
15:28Well, we got married under the oak tree.
15:30My husband is over here painting and getting the place ready as well.
15:35Freddie runs his own painting company,
15:37but pitches him at Laura's family business whenever he can.
15:40It's so nice.
15:42See?
15:43Remind you of our wedding, though.
15:45Remind you of us.
15:47Just getting ready for it kind of reminds you, you know?
15:51Oh, look at that.
15:52That's very Cinderella.
15:54It doesn't just bring back memories,
15:55but it brings a little tear to my eye as well.
15:59I mean, I should feel like a princess, right?
16:01Yes.
16:03You know, every time I do this,
16:05it's like I'm setting up for my own wedding.
16:10This is the Tuscan patio.
16:12Today, tablecloths or nothing's been ironed yet.
16:15I just wanted to show you a little bit of how it's going to look.
16:20It's already gorgeous.
16:21It's clean, classy.
16:22I love it.
16:23Yeah.
16:25The couple really like it, I think.
16:27To create something that somebody wants.
16:30Is it great?
16:31It's a wonderful feeling.
16:33It looks like they've secured another booking for the wedding venue.
16:37I loved it.
16:38It has everything.
16:39I feel like I could hope for.
16:42I'm going to start crying.
16:45You're cute.
16:47Now Diane can return to getting everything ready for tomorrow's ceremony.
16:51A wedding vow renewal for Noelle, who works at the stables.
16:55The event we are having is my 10-year wedding vow renewal.
17:01I'm feeling pretty good about tomorrow.
17:03I think it's going to be exciting.
17:05Noelle does so many things for us.
17:07She just has a huge heart and we want to give back to her.
17:11I'm making feed so I can be gone tonight, get a little rest for tomorrow and then we'll be all
17:19set.
17:19I think it's going to be wonderful.
17:21But before the big day, there's a horse at the stable that needs both Noelle and Laura's care and attention.
17:29Angel has somehow managed to give herself a central coronary ulcer.
17:34Basically, she has a hole right in the center of her eye and there's treatments that need to happen today.
17:40It's not uncommon to see this type of injury.
17:45She could have poked herself in the eye with a piece of hay.
17:50As her first horse in Florida, Angel holds a very special place in Laura's heart.
17:55Angel and I have been together for 16 years.
17:58She's the reason that I get up in the morning.
18:00She is the reason we built the stables.
18:02I have a bond and a connection that I have never felt with any other horse.
18:08This is the affected eye.
18:09We are going to treat it by just pushing this ointment directly into her eye.
18:14This is an antifungal.
18:16If we didn't medicate and treat the eye, she has the potential of losing her eye completely.
18:23Laura has a busy 24 hours ahead of her.
18:26As well as Noelle's vow renewal to prepare for, Angel requires around-the-clock care.
18:32All right, she's all done. I'm going to take her halter off.
18:35There are two medications that must be administered every four hours.
18:40This is 24-7.
18:42I'm up twice during the night to be able to go and do this.
18:46But it's imperative for her to keep her eye.
18:56Over in Orlando...
18:58Right, come on, let's do some warm-ups.
19:00Plank. Plank! Oh, my God.
19:03Leicester-born performing arts coach Sarah
19:05has also been having sleepless nights about her important charity cabaret show.
19:10So she's holding last-minute rehearsals to make sure every student is on point.
19:17We didn't used to do that in the old days.
19:19I was a dancer at Blackpool.
19:21All the students, they're all doing, like, an individual performance.
19:24Either song, monologue, stand-up, comedy.
19:27We also have Bella that's going to be dancing.
19:29Oh, Bella! You did awesome!
19:31I can tell you've really worked hard on that.
19:34Yeah.
19:35You know what I'm going to say to you, don't you?
19:36Really tell that story, so follow your face through to the body.
19:40Okay?
19:41Molly, it's her first ever monologue in front of people.
19:45And I really want to give her that extra bit of love and encouragement.
19:49I know you're nervous.
19:50Yeah.
19:51But I think it's going to do you so good.
19:54I can't believe my mom just called me a little dramatic.
19:57A little?
19:58Being an actor, and I was an actor as a kid, I couldn't have imagined the joy that you would
20:02get from coaching.
20:04Maybe I'm a little dramatic, but drama makes life interesting.
20:07But I get so much fulfillment.
20:10Go really dramatic, because that's funny.
20:12Yeah, and the face. See? That's it. That's exactly what we learned.
20:16And when you're a mom, you're proud of your kids.
20:19I have 70 of them, so it's like a peacock moment all the time.
20:22I'm too busy with all my talented students.
20:26Brats.
20:27Kelly, she's an absolute pro.
20:30Great job, Kelly.
20:31Okay, a couple of things.
20:32Go stronger British for me.
20:34Don't forget to see that.
20:35Ooh, I've no good time for all my talented students.
20:41Sarah also works as a dialect coach at Orlando's theme parks, teaching British accents to their performers.
20:47And she's given her final student, Addy, the challenge of mastering her own East Midlands accent for tonight's show.
20:55I've written you this little monologue with some, like, East Midlands sayings.
21:00That's good, right?
21:00Yeah.
21:01But Sarah's only got this one rehearsal to prepare her.
21:05A-up. That is like, oh, how are you, basically.
21:09A-up? Yes.
21:10Yes, yes, yes.
21:11A-up.
21:11You're a bit mardy, aren't you?
21:14Mardy.
21:14Ooh, you're a bit mardy, aren't you?
21:17Oh, I'm stressed.
21:19Oh, I am stressed, yeah.
21:21But Sarah, as a teacher, she's really, really great.
21:23You don't care. It's all right. I get it.
21:25I get it. I get it.
21:27Okay.
21:28You don't care. It's all right. It's all right. I get it.
21:31Yeah, so think a ferret.
21:32Ferret?
21:34I don't think I've ever met somebody who cares so much, like, about her students.
21:39Tra, everyone! Tra!
21:41Okay, tra, everyone, tra!
21:43Tra, tra.
21:44Yeah, tra.
21:44Tra.
21:45Locked in.
21:45See ya.
21:46All right, yeah.
21:46You got this.
21:47Adi, mine will be perfect.
21:49I think it will definitely be perfect enough for American ears, and let's just hope they actually
21:52understand some of the words that I put in.
21:55If you didn't think us British people were crazy enough already, now you really do, right?
21:58Well, yeah.
21:59It's going to be awesome.
22:00Okay.
22:01Rehearsals may be over, but Sarah's work is far from done because tonight's show isn't
22:08been held at a theatre, she's putting it on in her own living room.
22:12We are turning this house into a New York-style cabaret venue.
22:17This part is going to be the stage, and then we've got to fit in 60 chairs, and I'm just
22:24hoping they can fit in.
22:26But we've got to.
22:26I've sold 60 tickets, so somehow I'm going to have to.
22:28We're adding the sound, the lights.
22:31It's a lot of work to be done.
22:33I'm a bit stressed.
22:34I'm a bit stressed.
22:48Over on Florida's Gulf Coast, Gary has travelled two hours west from his bar in Davenport
22:54to earn a little extra cash as a tour guide on a dolphin-spotting boat trip.
23:00All right, guys.
23:01Welcome aboard, Gary.
23:03Good to see you, mate.
23:04How are you?
23:04How are you doing?
23:05How are you doing?
23:05Welcome aboard.
23:06Scott, how are you doing?
23:07Good to see you.
23:08I'm here today to help Scott and Miles on the Sea Screamer.
23:12We're going to cruise through Clearwater Harbor, then we'll head out into the Gulf, find the
23:17dolphins.
23:18Hopefully, they want to play.
23:19Scott and Miles' co-skipper, the Sea Screamer.
23:23At 73 foot long, and with two twin turbocharged engines, it's the biggest speedboat in the world.
23:30Biggest, please.
23:32Appreciate it, sir.
23:34Some people said, you know, you're a Brit over here.
23:36What got you into this?
23:37How are you guys doing today?
23:38Good?
23:38Good.
23:39So, anyway, like, I always say I love it.
23:43I just love talking to people.
23:44I've always loved talking to people.
23:47All right, guys, welcome to the Sea Screamer.
23:51When we do these tours, I get on the mic, give them a little bit to expect.
23:55Good morning, ladies and gentlemen.
23:57So, during the trip, no standing on the seats or benches.
24:00We want you to enjoy the dolphins, not actually swim with them.
24:03So, just keep yourself safe, guys.
24:05When I get older, that mic is mine.
24:07All right, guys, let's go see some dolphins.
24:14Gary's ability to spot dolphins will be crucial on this trip,
24:18as once they are located, Scott and Miles will maneuver the boat into a position
24:23to tempt them to come and play in its wake.
24:25The tour's just about an hour, you know, in that time.
24:29We have to see quite a few dolphins.
24:32If he doesn't catch sight of a dolphin,
24:34not only will the passengers go home disappointed,
24:37but it could also hit Gary's wallet.
24:40You know what dolphins mean, don't you? Tips.
24:43Standard 15% to 20% tips are expected in Florida's hospitality industry
24:48and are hugely important to Gary and his wife, Maria.
24:52We get a set pair, but we also rely on tips.
24:55It's just part of how we make a living out here.
24:58And I've got four grandchildren now, so it's going to be expensive.
25:02Ten minutes, no dolphins yet.
25:05The dolphins are wild animals.
25:06Sometimes they want to play.
25:08Sometimes they're busy feeding and they don't want to play.
25:11We just have to take our chances with Mother Nature.
25:13Been about just over 20 minutes now.
25:17And still nothing.
25:20Without a dorsal fin in sight,
25:22the passengers are starting to get restless.
25:25I'm sorry.
25:26I do apologise.
25:28I'm not sure we're going to see them, but let's hope we do.
25:31I need my money back if I don't see the dolphins.
25:35You can't make them come to the service, you know.
25:38But it's a beautiful day.
25:39I hope we'll come out and see the sun.
25:41You know, it's...
25:51Over in Orlando, it's just five hours until the curtain comes up on Sarah's charity show.
25:57But her living room still needs to be transformed into a theatre for an audience of 60.
26:02This cabaret in my house, it is a bit mad.
26:06But I am blessed that I have so many people helping me today.
26:10Sarah's two stepkids from her husband Doug's previous marriage, Brittany and Brandon, are here for support.
26:16Along with Brittany's daughter, Penny.
26:18Have you come to help Grandma?
26:19Oh, my God, you're getting too heavy. Have you come to help Grandma?
26:22I'm Grandma.
26:23Brandon, who usually makes orders of service at the family funeral home...
26:27Yes!
26:28Finally, finally got them done.
26:31All right, let's see.
26:32...has printed theatre programmes instead.
26:34It looks gorgeous.
26:36Oh, they look great.
26:37And some of her students are lending a hand in the kitchen, too.
26:41OK, who wants to do the charcuterie cups?
26:43Me!
26:44Sarah's got them making finger food that she hopes will bring in more donations at the show.
26:49My aim is to raise $3,000.
26:52Lila, the idea is to have one of these, make it really pretty, and these little cocktail sticks with stars
26:58on.
26:58That's cute.
26:59OK, sausage meat.
27:01And she's ensuring there's a very British flavour to her New York Cabaret Club menu.
27:07I've decided to make some British Scotch eggs, because I do love cooking.
27:10I make them every Easter.
27:12It's kind of a bit of a hit in the family.
27:15Oh, Doug's here!
27:17Doug's arrived straight from a funeral.
27:19Hi.
27:20Hello.
27:21We need furniture.
27:22Furniture needs to be moved.
27:23We've got the chairs, right?
27:24Can I get out of this?
27:25Yes.
27:25Two minutes.
27:26All right, all right, hurry up.
27:27As a singer himself in his spare time, Doug's no stranger to putting on a performance.
27:33Then we're going to have to do an angle.
27:35Being married to a businessman who does understand the entertainment world, but then also goes off and does a nice
27:44day job, is just so handy.
27:46Check.
27:46One, two, yeah.
27:48Actually, it's not really a nice day job, is it?
27:49I don't know why I said a nice day job.
27:51Nice day job.
27:53Burying people.
27:56I'm now making the cornflake cakes.
27:58I have used the best Cadbury's chocolate that we can find in the States.
28:03It's better than American chocolate, but it doesn't taste the same as when I go back to England.
28:07It's just something about being British that you never lose.
28:10You can't take the Leicester out of me.
28:12You just can't.
28:12I'm still that down-to-earth Leicester girl.
28:14I can get golden syrup.
28:17Remember when it used to be in the tin?
28:18I loved it when it was in the tin.
28:22Sarah's student, Addy, has been practising at East Midlands Accent for her act in the show.
28:27Go on, run through it.
28:28You look a bit mardy.
28:29Don't you?
28:30Don't you?
28:31Don't you?
28:31Don't you?
28:32Don't you?
28:32Addy, go there.
28:33Go there.
28:33Don't you?
28:34Don't you?
28:35Don't you?
28:35You?
28:36You?
28:36You?
28:36You?
28:38All right, all right, all right.
28:40What's all this going on here?
28:42Oh, no, no.
28:42There we go.
28:44You need an accent on what you do.
28:45All right, girls, what you doing down there?
28:47It's the worst accent in the world.
28:50It's so embarrassing.
28:51I thought that was pretty good.
28:52No, don't feed into him.
28:54I thought it was good.
28:54It's not, because that's the only one he can do.
28:57Quicker than you can say Dick Van Dyke, Doug and his friend Bruce have the stage set for the performance.
29:02Okay.
29:03I think this is as good quality as a professional theatre backdrop.
29:07Some of the theatres I've worked in, trust me, it's probably better.
29:10They'll have mothballs in them.
29:12And now, with just three hours until showtime...
29:16Oh, good job, Penny.
29:19Sarah needs all hands on deck to create the auditorium.
29:23I am seriously nervous we're not going to fit 60 chairs in this house.
29:28It's intimate.
29:29Oh, my God, it is intimate.
29:31That's the word.
29:32Is there enough room?
29:33You know what?
29:33I think we're doing okay.
29:35Is this all the chairs?
29:36Yeah.
29:37I think we're going to fit them in.
29:39Why didn't I sell 70 tickets?
29:42We could fit 70 chairs in.
29:45I actually cannot believe how much we actually achieved today.
29:49They're not very comfy, though, are they?
29:51But I am worried about a lot of things.
29:54Actually, that's not bad.
29:56This looks great.
29:57It's really good.
29:57Hopefully, the sound will sound great.
29:59The students' nerves are settled.
30:02Oh, my God.
30:03I'm a little nervous for the students, but I'm there.
30:06There's a problem.
30:07The show must go on, as we say in our business.
30:15Over in Groveland, Laura and her mum, Diane, are preparing for their own big gig as they dress the pavilion
30:22where today's wedding vow renewal ceremony will be taking place.
30:27Decorations are my mum's 40.
30:57Head of decorating.
30:59I don't like things to look right.
31:01You can't let anybody down.
31:02We would never, ever do anything.
31:05Half roads.
31:06It's a lot of work, but it's nice when it's all done and people's happy.
31:10Hopefully, we'll be getting paid for it.
31:17It's Huey who will preside over Noelle's vow renewal in just a few hours.
31:23Hello.
31:25Do you have the ceremony written down?
31:27Yes.
31:28Can we look at it for a second?
31:30Yes, darling.
31:31My dad, Huey, is Reverend Hugh Donnelly, and he is the officiant for all of our ceremonies.
31:38Can we change the...
31:40Right, OK.
31:41For personal reasons, we cannot use the word chivalry.
31:45Huey trained as an ordained minister online.
31:48It qualifies him to officiate weddings and baptisms anywhere in the state of Florida.
31:53He decided that, you know, if we're going to do this, we're going to do it right.
31:59Huey!
32:02It's only a change of a word, but Huey gets a bit uptight, and a last-minute change is going
32:07to freak him a little bit.
32:10I'm going to change one line, if that's OK.
32:13What is that line?
32:14The chivalry is not dead.
32:15And add instead, Noelle and Al would like to continue as they began with an exchange of favours.
32:22You're going to do it right.
32:23You're going to do it right now.
32:23I will.
32:29Write it slowly, because I can't read fast.
32:31OK, I'll do what I can.
32:34Right, is that the change?
32:35Yes.
32:37All right, babies, I'm headed to the barn.
32:40You don't know when you leave, he's going to call you Bride Ziller.
32:48With Huey left to relearn his lines, Laura joins Noelle in applying her horse angel's latest dose of eye ointment.
32:55Here we go, last one, for a little while.
33:00Laura administered two treatments overnight.
33:03You're done, sweetenies.
33:04But her sleep sacrifice ahead of such a busy day has helped Angel on the road to recovery.
33:11And the eye was like the shape of a cauliflower.
33:13She's got rid of a lot of that, so we're certainly headed in the right direction.
33:20We will continue with this treatment, and hopefully when the vet comes back next, we will get the all cleared.
33:29All right.
33:31While Noelle heads off to get ready for her big day, Florida's summer storms...
33:37Black clouds right above us.
33:39Could be bad to ruin Laura and her parents' best laid plans.
33:44Feathers are never going to need to come in, because they will get wasted with the rain.
33:47Yeah.
33:48They need to protect as many decorations as they can from the passing storm, if Noelle's vow renewal is not
33:55to become a washout.
33:56We're trying to build the wedding venue business.
33:59We can't afford to screw up somebody's big day.
34:02They've been working the last two weeks trying to prepare for this one.
34:05Very worried.
34:06Very worried, because if it rains heavy, all that work could be ruined.
34:10Very worried.
34:25Very worried.
34:26Very worried.
34:34So hard for this, right? You know what you're doing. Just own it. You are all stars
34:40It's happening. It's fucking it's gonna get the big full salad. She's under my secret dress and we're ready to
34:44go
34:48Downstairs the audience is gathering Sarah's hoping to boost the
34:52$1,200 she's raised for charity and ticket sales with her great British canapes come on in have a snack
34:59have a drink
35:00Everything that that we've made for the event. I am actually gonna charge $5
35:05Sarah's holding the event for runway to hope a local children's cancer charity that steps on Brandon volunteers with
35:13It's happening
35:14Sarah has been working day in and day out with these students. I am so excited to see how it's
35:22gonna pay off
35:25Well, hello
35:30New York style cabaret
35:32My job is done now. It's down to the students to perform to the best of their ability
35:38I'm anxious and nervous, but I think they're just gonna kill it. I know they are. What are you all
35:42doing here?
35:43Callie will be absolutely hysterical as the cleaning lady coming out very British humor
35:48It seems we have an unexpected guest!
35:51Mr. Clean is here!
35:54Let's see what he looks like with hair
35:59I absolutely love Fleming in Florida
36:03In one day, I'll see my face in Times Square on a poster
36:14Career-wise, it's been the best thing that's ever happened to me
36:21My world would have just been different. I wouldn't married an Undertaker
36:24I would have married a New York diamond tribute artist
36:26I'm so lucky to be able to teach all these kids
36:29They are just so talented
36:31It's going really really well
36:34Audience is just loving it
36:36Are you alright?
36:38Yeah?
36:39I'm enjoying the cabaret
36:41You're a bit Mardi, aren't you?
36:44The fact that she turned this place into a cabaret room is insane
36:48The students are just phenomenal
36:51I haven't got a boyfriend
36:53Aww
36:54I said I haven't got a boyfriend
36:56Aww
36:57Aww
36:58That was rubbish
37:01Try, everyone
37:01Yay!
37:07The students raised the bar tonight
37:09They were absolutely at their best
37:14Just overwhelmed to be honest
37:16It was amazing
37:22Sales of Sarah's Scotch eggs and other food and drink have boosted donations
37:27I can tell you that we did go above and beyond my goal
37:33We raised more than $3,000
37:35That's amazing
37:36This night just couldn't have gone better
37:39I want to do it again tomorrow, but I think Doug will kill me
37:42I think he'll put me in a casket
37:43That's a big man on toes again
37:58Off the coast of Clearwater Beach
38:01The sea life is proving less crowd-pleasing
38:04As bar manager Gary works his sideline as a tour guide on a dolphin-spotting boat trip
38:09We've been on the boat for about 25 minutes now
38:13It's Gary's job to locate the dolphins
38:16If he doesn't, it won't just be the passengers going home feeling short-changed
38:21Just over 30 minutes
38:23As Gary's relying on tips to make a decent wage today
38:31Yep, there's Scott
38:32Just here
38:33I think we might have a single dolphin here
38:38Alright guys, we're going to see if we can get some chumps out of this dolphin here
38:42Keep your eyes on them, please
38:48Jumper, jumping on the right side
38:55We got a couple of dolphins here, folks
39:01Left side
39:02Left side
39:03Left side
39:03We got a jumper
39:04Left side
39:05Left side
39:06We have some jumpers
39:07Jumper on the right and the left
39:12Typical
39:13Gary waits half an hour for a dolphin
39:15And then, just like buses back home, they all come along at once
39:18Little baby dolphin back here
39:21Where do you baby dolphins jump behind the door on the left side?
39:26Having fun guys?
39:27Yeah
39:27Yeah?
39:28Little baby dolphin out there as well
39:30Yeah
39:30I've never seen one that little
39:33Where are you guys from again?
39:35Bapu
39:35Bapu, okay
39:36What do you think to the dolphins?
39:38What do you think to the dolphins?
39:40What do you think to the dolphins?
39:42With a whole pod of dolphins putting on a spectacular show for the passengers
39:47Gary's chances of taking home healthy tips are suddenly looking much better
39:54With the tour over
39:55Thanks for an awesome day, we do work the tips
39:58So please show your appreciation
39:59Have a safe journey wherever you're going
40:03Tomorrow, it's back to building the bar in Davenport with his wife Maria
40:07They're juggling two jobs
40:09It's hard
40:10But I enjoy it
40:11What do you think to it in Florida?
40:13Seriously think
40:14We would move out here
40:16Any tips and tricks?
40:17I'm not saying it's easy
40:18I mean me and my wife have two or three jobs
40:20But if you put your heart and soul into it
40:22It's well worth it
40:23Would you like to see dolphins every day?
40:25And be in the hot weather?
40:27The taps and corks really kicks off
40:30Then I'd like to think that if we can get the right staff in here
40:33That I can take a little bit of time off
40:35And start doing more tours
40:37Gary, that was a good day today, buddy
40:40You've earned every penny of this
40:41This is what makes it a little bit sweeter, guys
40:43We've got four grandbabies to feed
40:45So this will go a long way
40:46If you enjoy what you're doing, it's not a job, is it?
40:48Catch you later
40:49Cheers
40:49It's a lifestyle
40:51Life's for living and we love living out here
41:00Over in Groveland in central Florida, the storm has passed at Laura, Diane and Huey's wedding venue
41:07Oh, we've got sunshine back again
41:10Oh, great
41:11Hopefully that's all we're getting
41:13They save the decorations from the wind and rain
41:16But with less than an hour until the vow renewal ceremony
41:20You're welcome
41:21Hello
41:23And the happy couple already here
41:26Everything needs to be reset
41:28So it's going to set us back a wee bit
41:29You may need to be traditionally late, you know that?
41:35Guests are starting to arrive
41:37And Laura still has to finish cooking the reception meal
41:40But at least the officiant of the vow renewal is ready and dressed for the occasion
41:45Good evening
41:49Some of the Americans ask, what's worn under the kilt?
41:52And I tell them, there's nothing worn under the kilt
41:55It's all in good working order
42:01The venue is finally set
42:03The guests are seated
42:05Right, I'm going to go first
42:06Don't come down until I'm on the pavilion
42:08All right
42:10And pre-ceremony nerves are setting in
42:12But not for Noelle and her husband Al
42:15To stand up in front of people and start making speeches
42:19I do like doing it
42:20But it's a wee bit nerve-wracking sometimes
42:22When you see all the eyes looking at you
42:24That's a good sign, eh?
42:28Huey will need his notes in case he forgets Noelle's last-minute vow change
42:33Come on, come on
42:35One of you here
42:36One of you here
42:38This evening we're gathered to witness the renewal of vows between Al and Noelle
42:44In 1976 we got wed in Scotland
42:48We had a really good wedding
42:49There were 200 people
42:51That's it
42:52It went on and on and on and on
42:54Even the photographer didn't want to go home
42:58Because everybody was enjoying themselves so much
43:00Al and Noelle would like to continue as they began with an exchange of favours
43:10This favour I give in token of art abiding love
43:14You may kiss your wife
43:18Thank you
43:21This ceremony was lovely
43:23It was really perfect
43:26I had my nice little bridezilla moment there at the end
43:29But he was able to pull it off wonderfully
43:31Now look a little this way towards my mic
43:34It's nice to be part of people's special days
43:37And a lot of the time I find myself stepping back
43:40And just having a look around and seeing the smiles on people's faces
43:44It's satisfying
43:46Hey everybody
43:47Come on raise the sparkler
43:49Come on
43:49Form a tunnel
43:52Family friends Jess and Dominic
43:54Have attended numerous events hosted by Laura, Diane and Huey
43:57If you want to come and have a wedding with a guy who's really going to put his heart and
44:01soul into it
44:02I mean let's face it
44:03He really does
44:11We always love getting an invite here don't we?
44:14They do a great job
44:16Whoo
44:18Huey's service, Diane's decorations and Laura's catering
44:22All get the thumbs up from the guests and the happy couple
44:25Yeah I'm very proud that we all worked as a team
44:29We all came together and we pulled it off
44:31To the next ten years, Al and Noel
44:34Cheers
44:39With the stables full
44:41Angel on the mend
44:43And with the family's venue business starting to really take off
44:47Laura, Huey and Diane have no regrets about leaving their life in Scotland 20 years ago
44:54Being in Florida is a blessing
44:57When you're working really hard, no matter how much you're sweating, at least we don't need to get up in
45:02the morning and scrape the frost from the windscreen of our car
45:06Did it meet to your expectations?
45:08Oh my God
45:10You want more for your kids than you ever had
45:13We know that at some point we're not going to be here
45:16And we want to leave this whole place for Laura coming up and taking over
45:20So I think we're on the right path for that
45:23Next ten years
45:24We'll do it again?
45:25Yeah
45:25Alright
45:26Bring our Zimmer for me, will you?
45:28Thank you
