00:00Don't McDreamy me.
00:01McDreamy is being a Mc-ass.
00:06Grey's Anatomy's Derek Shepard may be known as McDreamy,
00:09but a lot of his behavior on Grey's Anatomy is actually pretty McCringy.
00:13You didn't tell me you were married.
00:14Okay, so now we're gonna have that fight again.
00:16At first glance, he comes off as an undeniably talented doctor
00:20with the Disney prince looks, irresistible charm,
00:22and admirable passion to earn his spot as an audience favorite.
00:26Show creator Shonda Rhimes even felt that she had no other choice
00:29but to kill the character off when actor Patrick Dempsey
00:32left the show in season 11, stating,
00:34I really couldn't have the idea that he just turned out to be a bad guy
00:37who walked out on his wife and kids be a true story.
00:40But in the years since his on-screen death,
00:42more fans have picked up on his shortcomings.
00:44He aggressively pursues an intern he has direct power over,
00:47doesn't tell her he's married, then slut shames her once they're broken up.
00:51You rarely get around.
00:53What did you just say to me?
00:54It's unforgivable.
00:55And that's only in the first two seasons.
00:58Returning in season 17 in Meredith's beach dream
01:01while she's in a coma suffering from COVID-19,
01:03this literal McDreamy is deeply supportive
01:06and in touch with Meredith's emotions.
01:08Your body's tired, but your soul won't even let me near you.
01:14You're still fighting.
01:15But is that romantic vision of him really accurate
01:18to the character he was when he was alive?
01:20Here's our take on Derek Shepherd's less dreamy traits,
01:23and what we can learn from his lack of growth.
01:30We are so excited to announce that we now have a line of weird girl merchandise.
01:35You can now express it through t-shirts, posters, mugs, a backpack.
01:39There's power in owning the weird girl in all of us.
01:42Announce that you are the weird girl.
01:44Click the link in the description below and get your hands on this one-of-a-kind weird girl merch.
01:49Derek is a manipulative partner.
01:51Yes, his marriage to Addison falls apart after she cheats on him,
01:55but his immature reaction prolongs both of their pain.
01:58He won't work on their relationship, but also refuses to formally end things,
02:02leaving them in limbo as a way to punish her.
02:04And he fails to recognize that before her infidelity,
02:07their marriage was lacking in affection and intimacy.
02:10Sometimes people do desperate things to attract attention.
02:13That's your sign of this, that I didn't pay you enough attention.
02:16A problem that they both contributed to.
02:18We got successful, you and me.
02:19We got busy and we got lazy.
02:21We didn't even bother to fight anymore.
02:22He then starts a relationship with Meredith,
02:24without telling her that he is still technically married.
02:27I'm Addison Shepard.
02:31Shepard?
02:33And you must be the woman who's been screwing my husband.
02:36The fallout causes him to end things with Meredith,
02:38and give Addison another chance, in theory.
02:40But in reality, this takes the form of continuing to hurt Addison
02:44and relishing her suffering as karmic payback.
02:46You do not get to laugh and you do not get to gloat.
02:49Why would I gloat?
02:50I have poison oak.
02:52So are we even yet?
02:53And is this bad enough?
02:54Have I repaid my debt to society?
02:56He also doesn't allow Meredith to move on.
02:59He slut-shames her for sleeping with someone else.
03:01Who's next, Alex?
03:03Because I hear he likes to sleep around.
03:06You two have that in common.
03:07And even though he's rejected her,
03:09he gets openly jealous and competitive with her new partner,
03:11and displays a feeling of ownership over her,
03:14acting as though she's doing something wrong
03:16by trying to be happy with another man.
03:18I'm married.
03:19I have responsibilities.
03:21She doesn't make me sick to my stomach
03:23thinking about my veterinarian touching her with his hands.
03:26His behavior in that situation reveals that he
03:28holds some pretty misogynistic views.
03:31Derek's criticisms and treatment of Meredith can feel notably gendered,
03:34in addition to judging her sex life while having an active one of his own,
03:38he uses language to characterize her as an over-emotional woman,
03:42casting himself as the calm and rational man.
03:44It would feel better if Meredith wasn't so,
03:46you know, she's acting silly about the credit.
03:48She's getting emotional.
03:49He makes decisions for Meredith and then informs her,
03:52instead of including her in the process.
03:54You can't just assume I'm going to kick my family out,
03:58and you don't get to announce it to them and ambush me.
04:00He disregards Meredith's feelings,
04:02like when he assumes she'll jump for joy at his DC job offer,
04:06without predicting that she'll also be worried about
04:09how totally uprooting her life will affect her career and their children.
04:12My life is here.
04:13I don't want to leave.
04:15And when she's not willing to drop everything in Seattle,
04:17he harbors underlying resentment towards his wife for,
04:20in his eyes, limiting his career.
04:22I gave up everything for you.
04:24There it is, everything.
04:26You gave up everything.
04:28That was everything to you?
04:30So while he undoubtedly loves Meredith,
04:32on some level it seems that he doesn't see theirs
04:35as a true marriage of equals,
04:36because he clearly sees his career as more significant than hers.
04:40Do you believe that your career is more important than mine?
04:42At this moment in time, it is!
04:44No, not at this moment.
04:45Always.
04:46Underlying this is an unexamined belief that a woman who loves him
04:49should unequivocally support him and sacrifice to accommodate his needs.
04:53And it's revealing that he considers being unfaithful to Meredith
04:56when he meets a woman who shows him the worshiping admiration he feels he deserves.
05:01This is amazing.
05:03You're amazing!
05:04Part of the problem with Meredith's and Derek's relationship
05:07is that it began with an inherently unequal power dynamic,
05:10when he, the talented neurosurgeon,
05:12fell for a young girl from the bar he soon found out was a new intern at the hospital.
05:16Stop looking at me like that.
05:18Like what?
05:19Like you've seen me naked.
05:20Dr. Shepard, this is inappropriate.
05:24He even exercises his authoritative power over her based on how their love life is going,
05:28displaying favoritism at work when they're happy,
05:31It's Dr. Grey.
05:32She's gonna prep you for the procedure and assist.
05:34and professionally reprimanding her when they're having romantic conflicts.
05:38You don't get to act like a spoiled little brat in my own war.
05:40This power dynamic continues after Meredith is promoted to Derek's level.
05:45You will always be that hotshot surgeon,
05:47and I will always be that young intern who fell in love with you.
05:49That's how you see yourself.
05:50That is not how I see myself.
05:51That is the issue here.
05:53He so routinely puts his partner's needs second,
05:55Have you even noticed that I went through a trauma too?
05:58that Christina has to remind Meredith to remember her own importance.
06:02Don't let what he wants eclipse what you need.
06:04It's not just in relationships, but in general,
06:06that Derek acts like the world revolves around him.
06:09A new method in treating inoperable malignant gliomas.
06:13The Shepard method.
06:14What do you think?
06:15It's a picture, a big picture of you.
06:17He may be a kind and skilled doctor,
06:19but Derek's also selfish with an exaggerated sense of self-importance.
06:24This is partly because of how other people treat him.
06:26Derek got arrested again, reckless endangerment.
06:29Please.
06:29Did he lose his license yet?
06:30Oh no, because they don't charge him.
06:32Because the cops worship him.
06:34He's glorified as the hotshot surgeon,
06:36and patients and colleagues alike are drawn to his charismatic personality and good looks.
06:40He's hot and arrogant in a way that's still sexy.
06:44However, much like the popular cliché of surgeons as cowboys who assume they know everything,
06:48he's internalized that flattering view of himself to a harmful degree.
06:52He feels entitled to damage other people's careers to help his own,
06:56and berates those with a skill level he finds threatening
06:59to reestablish his sense of control.
07:01I get it.
07:02You were king of all neurosurgeons, right hand to the president,
07:06and now you can't have that,
07:07so you need to be king of the hospital and kick around the peons.
07:10He takes full credit for the groundbreaking clinical trial that he and Meredith
07:14both worked on, diminishing her accomplishments for the sake of his resume.
07:18I don't want you to give me credit because you're mad that I'm mad.
07:21I want you to give me credit because you think I worked hard for it and I deserve it.
07:24You don't deserve it.
07:25You're a baby.
07:26Oh, and what about the time he reports Richard's alcoholism to the hospital board
07:30and won't admit it's in part because he wants his friend's job?
07:33What, do you want to take notes so you can show it to the board
07:36so they can offer you his job?
07:37Admit you want to be chief.
07:38All right, you know what?
07:39I'm done having this argument.
07:40He has a black-and-white worldview.
07:42Rather than totally judging Derek's bad behavior,
07:45it's more productive to look at how many of his issues can be traced back to trauma.
07:48Witnessing his father's murder led him to develop a belief that everything,
07:52and everyone, is fixed as either right or wrong.
07:55How is it that you don't know the difference between right and wrong?
07:59Because I don't think that things are simply right or wrong.
08:02We can feel for Derek and understand how his painful backstory has shaped him,
08:06while also recognizing that his black-and-white view of the world is pretty unhealthy.
08:11His refusal to allow for any middle ground makes him tough on his loved ones.
08:15You don't give people any room.
08:16Flaws are unacceptable to McDreamy.
08:18Most of all, his rigid outlook and impossibly high standards
08:22are detrimental to his own mental health.
08:24He's devastated when he learns about the mortality rate of his patients,
08:28but his black-and-white brain won't consider that these numbers don't take into account
08:32that he's the only surgeon willing to take a chance on near-death patients.
08:36By removing the nuance from the situation and being unable to forgive himself,
08:40he can see only failure.
08:42These are the people I saved.
08:45These are the people I killed.
08:47You're not looking at the big picture.
08:48His judgmental mindset can also make him cruel.
08:51When he's repulsed by the idea that he could have any shared humanity with a killer,
08:55he doesn't behave empathetically and ethically as a physician.
08:58It's inhumane.
08:59Oh, killing people is inhumane.
09:01Denying him painkillers is a judgment call.
09:03He's not facing his anger or feelings.
09:05Derek isn't a hothead like some other doctors on the show,
09:08but beneath that cool, restrained demeanor is a quieter, bottled-up rage.
09:13He's never resolved his feelings of anger towards his father's killer.
09:16I know how angry you still are about what happened to dad.
09:19Of course I'm angry.
09:20And a lot of Derek's problems stem from unwillingness or inability to explore and express emotion.
09:26Derek can undoubtedly be sweet, and he comes across like a big romantic,
09:30who opens up the dark and twisty Meredith to the possibilities of love.
09:34I can't believe we're doing this.
09:35It's Valentine's Day.
09:37We don't do Valentine's Day.
09:39It's romantic.
09:40But like an idealistic knight in shining armor, he prefers grand, sweeping gestures,
09:45even sometimes ones that can be termed love bombing,
09:48instead of dealing with underlying issues.
09:51So yesterday you're making out with scrub nurses,
09:53and today you're building our dream house.
09:56Yes.
09:56He doesn't know how to support people who are going through anything messy,
09:59like when Meredith is struggling with depression.
10:01Being closed off to emotional complexity can lead to him mistreating people he actually loves,
10:07and his inability to express his anger in a healthy way manifests in lashing out.
10:13Get out.
10:13Like when he's so upset at his own perceived failures as a surgeon
10:16that he angrily projects his shame onto Meredith.
10:19There's no fixing you.
10:20You're a lemon.
10:21And bats the engagement ring meant for her into the woods.
10:24Other times, he uses risky behavior to cope with feeling out of control,
10:28getting arrested multiple times.
10:31Your lady looks pissed.
10:33Again, Derek?
10:34His impulsive behavior masks some severe insecurities that Derek has failed to deal with.
10:39He refuses to grow.
10:41Ultimately, Derek's biggest problem is his lack of growth.
10:44Sure, everyone is flawed, and just because Derek has toxic traits
10:48doesn't mean we can't relate to him and his flaws.
10:50But he's unwilling to undergo the necessary self-reflection to make progress.
10:55Still running in circles around all the women in your life.
10:58I'm not running around in circles.
10:59Instead of admitting when he's wrong and learning from it,
11:02he's more likely to get mad at anyone who questions his judgment or authority.
11:06You don't want to get into who's responsible for all of this.
11:08His lack of character development is highlighted by other members of the cast
11:12who arguably start off as more problematic than Derek,
11:15but evolve and improve.
11:17His best friend Mark is originally introduced as a destructive womanizer,
11:20before growing into a loving person and an empathetic father.
11:24In stark contrast to this transformation,
11:26Derek begins the series as the hospital heartthrob,
11:28but by the end is being viewed by audiences in a far more critical light.
11:32You can't just drag us away so I can come live in your shadow.
11:35It's called a trailing spouse.
11:36This is not like that.
11:37This is exactly that.
11:39And it's not what I signed up for.
11:41Fans were truly devastated after Derek's death.
11:44They killed Derek.
11:47With some even claiming that the show jumped the shark after his departure,
11:50given he occupied an irreplaceable role in Meredith's heart.
11:53I had one great love in my life and he died.
11:56But with Derek gone, the show had opportunities to give valuable airtime
11:59to other characters more willing to grow.
12:02Greg Bryan of Cheat Sheet argues that the show was smart to make Derek's death final,
12:06as it allowed room for other storylines to blossom,
12:08particularly one centered on female characters.
12:11He uses his perfect man facade as an excuse not to be better.
12:15Yes, on the surface, McDreamy seems like the perfect guy.
12:18A handsome doctor who dedicates his life to advancing the field of neurosurgery,
12:22whose compassion for patients and devotion to saving lives is unparalleled.
12:26It's a beautiful day to save lives.
12:28But ultimately, he used those amazing strengths to mask and excuse
12:33not addressing some very big personal weaknesses and pathologies.
12:36So Derek's a reminder to us that no one is above
12:39that crucial work of self-reflection and growth.
12:41Meanwhile, we may just be better off allowing McDreamy to stay in Meredith's dreams.
12:46You think you're charming in that talented, neurotic, overly moosed hair sort of way.
12:51Good for you.
12:53This is The Take.
12:54Let's take the tropes home with us.
12:56We are so excited to announce that we now have a line of weird girl merchandise.
13:00It's not just a question of, am I the weird girl?
13:03You have to ask yourself, which weird girl am I?
13:06Are you the dreamy space cadet living on your own planet?
13:09Are you the delightfully spiraling basket case?
13:12Are you the ferocious goth?
13:13Are you the awkward misfit?
13:15Are you the smartass?
13:16I think there's power in owning the weird girl in all of us.
13:19You can now express it through posters, mugs, a backpack, t-shirts.
13:25Wear it on your sleeve, announce that you are the weird girl.
13:28We had so much fun conceptualizing these characters and drawing from our favorite
13:32weird girls of film and TV to create our vision of the five types.
13:35One of our favorite designs is this beautiful line art rendering of the weird girl.
13:41She's got the iconic goth visual.
13:43It just looks great whether you're doing a cute backpack, a hoodie.
13:47You can grab a tote or a poster with all of the weird girls.
13:50Or another approach is to mix and match.
13:52So you grab your space cadet water bottle, your misfit hoodie,
13:56and your basket case poster behind you.
13:59I love these shirts.
14:00It's also super soft.
14:01It's very soft.
14:02I really feel like I could live in this.
14:04It's quite lovely.
14:05Click the link in the description below to order from spring right now.
14:08To the weird girl.
14:09To the weird girls in all of us.
14:11Which weird girl are you?
14:25I don't think the girls in the carafe for you.
14:27You don't think she's strange.
14:30You think they're sort of like nothing.
14:32Cut them over the Beim drivers.
14:34But you walk in the room.
14:36Then you get your wanna.
14:36We love you.
14:39And I.
14:40And I think they really got the closer look.
14:43It's okay.
14:46I mean that he잖아요.
14:48I reallyos.
14:49I don't know.
14:50But you think the character's role is particularlyordre revealing and polsk.
