Home Town - Season 10 - Episode 02: The Biggest Yet Part 2
Transcript
00:01Real crazy.
00:02This is the biggest construction project
00:04I have ever been a part of.
00:06And it's an heirloom home that's multi-generational.
00:09This house is significant to the history of Laurel
00:12and to the history of this family.
00:14This used to be my father's chiropractic office.
00:17The biggest challenge we've ever had.
00:19So this is the room that we do not speak of.
00:23Whoa!
00:24It is hard to let people see
00:26what's been happening to the house.
00:29Good gracious.
00:30Some contractors have said I won't touch this one.
00:33It would be simpler to rip it off and start new
00:35than try to fix what's there.
00:37How much are we wanting to spend?
00:39Around $250,000.
00:41It's $400,000 to do it all.
00:43I'm really sorry.
00:44We love this house.
00:46We don't want anything to happen to it.
00:48We gotta do what we gotta do.
00:52Oh my gosh.
00:54You have been cooking in here for 20 years.
00:57I know.
00:57The kitchen is my baby that I'm worried about.
00:59Everything in this house is so twisted.
01:02We can't put a $60,000 kitchen on top of Spongy Force.
01:04What the heck are we gonna do?
01:06That's the biggest contingency we've ever spent.
01:08We're hundreds of thousands of dollars into this.
01:10So we have to see it through.
01:13Because we've never had to delay so bad,
01:16we went to the team and said,
01:19let's finish out the primary suite and show the Gallagher's.
01:22It's a long time to ask people to wait without showing them anything at all.
01:25Check it out.
01:28Jiminy Cricket.
01:29Oh my gosh.
01:32Love it.
01:34So excited.
01:35Oh my.
01:37Look at the shower.
01:38Do you wanna see the kitchen where it is at this point?
01:41Oh heck yeah.
01:42It's not beautiful.
01:42Hopefully, there'll be no more delays.
01:45There is so much work left to do.
01:48Mm-hmm.
01:48So much, yeah.
01:49I don't think I trust the house to be good yet.
01:52Good morning.
01:53Just another day of making our favorite small town better.
01:56Erin, we gotta go, babe.
01:57Go fix some old sad houses.
02:00Ben, let's go.
02:01Growing up, I didn't see what was so special about Laurel.
02:04So every day, we make sure our girls see it.
02:06Good morning, Katie.
02:07Hey.
02:07Can you believe we fixed up over 100 houses in Laurel?
02:10There's so much opportunity.
02:11So many unloved houses.
02:13I don't know what is gonna go wrong in here today.
02:16I'm sure something.
02:19Girl, the fat just flew through here.
02:20That's not good.
02:22No way.
02:23We're about to see the house for the first time.
02:25This is the best part.
02:26Oh my God.
02:28Holy cow.
02:29Are you serious right now?
02:31Ben, did you make this?
02:32Yeah, I made this.
02:33The real truth of living and working in your hometown is that
02:36you're gonna see these people everywhere forever.
02:39It's your superpower, Erin.
02:40Color is her superpower.
02:42It is.
02:42It is perfect.
02:43Every day is different when you're renovating houses in Laurel, Mississippi.
02:57Looks so good.
02:59It feels like we've crossed that line of the house is not gonna fall down anymore.
03:03It for sure isn't gonna fall in.
03:06We're ready to start painting.
03:07How do they like the bedroom?
03:09Loved it.
03:10And that closet.
03:11Loved it.
03:12I think the bathroom was kind of a dream come true moment.
03:15Jeff and Chris did ask how much longer.
03:17We're getting close.
03:18You know, with our kitchen floor problem, that delayed us.
03:21Yeah.
03:21And now it's resolved.
03:22Yeah.
03:23Four weeks feels like a good amount of time to get them back in the house.
03:26As long as there's no more problems.
03:28Okay.
03:28We've been working on the Gallagher's house for five months.
03:31Five months.
03:32We're normally done in two months.
03:34And they need to go home.
03:36We are ready to complete phase two, which is Chris's dream kitchen, the parlor, the dining room, the back porch,
03:43and paint the house.
03:44In four weeks.
03:45In four weeks, we're gonna do all that.
03:47Not months.
03:47Okay, the house was green originally.
03:49They want it green again.
03:51It's beautiful.
03:52And we love that it's gonna stay green.
03:54When paint goes on the exterior, that's when it gets really real.
03:57For a long time, people have thought that the primed siding board is the color.
04:02No.
04:02No.
04:03We can do so much better.
04:04I've got a bunch of green samples to try.
04:07I really like this color.
04:09Oh, it's beautiful.
04:10Oof.
04:11Yeah, that feels more regal.
04:13Well, that's a good word for it.
04:14Yours just reads totally blue.
04:16It's very beach house.
04:18Totally wrong for this.
04:19Actually, at this point, your shirt and your overalls are the color palette, but are all very coordinating.
04:24And this beach sample.
04:26Oh, my gosh.
04:27That's pretty strange.
04:28Look at our clothes.
04:29Look at our swatches.
04:30Whoa.
04:31Isn't that freaky?
04:32Is that on purpose?
04:33No.
04:34But which color do you like?
04:36I feel like this is...
04:38It's a trap.
04:39This is such a trap.
04:41Hey, baby's due.
04:43I'm thinking three weeks.
04:44So you're like to the point where like a surprise could happen at any moment.
04:48You can pack a bag.
04:49Life's about to change.
04:51All right.
04:51So green.
04:53We're going green.
04:54Dark green.
04:54Green feels good.
05:05So this is going to be the Gallaher's dream kitchen.
05:09It's going to be very nice.
05:12Okay.
05:12When I think about the way Chris made it work with the kitchen that they had for so, so long,
05:17decades.
05:18Our oldest son, Jacob, calls it the hallway with appliances.
05:22Someone tries to get ice.
05:23You can't open the freezer.
05:25If someone's at the stove, someone's got to move.
05:26We really need to go above and beyond to make this kitchen the greatest of all time for them.
05:32Exactly what she wants.
05:34Let's start on this wall.
05:35Okay.
05:36So we're going to have, for the first time ever, a full size fridge and freezer side by side.
05:41Shaker style cabinetry.
05:43We're going to try to blend really historic charm and modern elegance.
05:47So I want to do a warm color.
05:49I want it to feel luxurious and inviting.
05:52A special inset coffee nook.
05:55And then you'll have those, like, bifold doors that slide in.
05:58All the way to the ceiling.
06:00All the way to the ceiling.
06:00To the left, we'll have a wall oven.
06:02Drawers beneath.
06:04Cabinet doors above.
06:05And we'll have a breakfast nook in the corner.
06:07So over here, we have the range.
06:11Counterspace.
06:12Cabinets.
06:13The cabinet will die into the corner.
06:15Right.
06:16Then it gets even more exciting.
06:18Oh, okay.
06:19We're going to have pantry cabinet and another matching pantry cabinet that goes down to the countertop.
06:25On that side.
06:25Okay.
06:26The island, ten feet by three feet.
06:29Oh, now that's a big island.
06:31It's a big mama.
06:32Chris and Jeff's design survey said that they like greens and blues.
06:36So we're going to do it in a color that's going to feel really sophisticated and timeless.
06:40And I want to do white pearl quartzite countertops.
06:43Overhang on that side so you can have barstool seating.
06:46On the end, you're going to have open shelving for cookbook storage.
06:50Beside that, a bank of drawers.
06:52A dishwasher.
06:53The sink and cabinet below.
06:55A trash pullout on the end.
06:57We're talking about using all the room in a big kitchen.
07:00She's never had a big kitchen.
07:02She wants to go all the way.
07:03Oh, yeah.
07:04This kitchen is max, level, finest of everything.
07:09She was very specific about all the details that she wanted.
07:13This was their family since Jeff, our homeowner.
07:17So our homeowner here, two years old.
07:20Two years old.
07:20Their whole life of the people they love is on this board.
07:24I want to put it somewhere where it's just for the family, beside the back door.
07:28It's not so on display, but it's very much part of the house and their daily life.
07:33It makes me want to cry.
07:34It's so precious.
07:36We raised all three of our boys in this house.
07:39They were born in this house.
07:40We had three and three years to the date.
07:42What I love about that is they still are close.
07:45Having the boys grow up here is a blessing.
07:48Really.
07:49The best memories, I think.
07:51Yes.
07:52Jacob.
07:53Uh-huh.
07:54Logan.
07:55No.
07:55Logan.
07:56Yeah.
07:57But that is the birth order.
07:58Yes.
07:59Three years apart.
08:00Exactly.
08:00On the day.
08:01On the day.
08:02Yeah, we have the same birthday.
08:03So we've got the Gallagher boys because we've got some furniture that we want to build.
08:06They're heirloom pieces.
08:08This is from the wall between the den and the dining room.
08:11These walls are actually what was holding the house together.
08:15Yeah.
08:16That's wild.
08:16That's crazy.
08:16We're going to build two tables.
08:18We've got this stove.
08:19I want to return the stove to the back porch.
08:22I want to repaint it black, use this rustic old wood out of the house, and make a table
08:29top.
08:30All right.
08:30That'll be sweet.
08:31Cool.
08:31The next build, y'all all like to play games, right?
08:34Oh, yes.
08:35When you come in the house, the parlor, which used to be the waiting room for the doctor's
08:39office, we thought that would be a good room to build a game table.
08:42Oh, that'd be pretty sweet.
08:42That sounds really cool to you.
08:43We're going to build a game table that is essentially a coffee table.
08:47We'll use cherry.
08:49It'll have a drawer in it for storage.
08:51It'll have a rack underneath for storage.
08:53Dividers on the top for individual game pieces.
08:55You can put together puzzles on it.
08:57You can set a cup of coffee on it.
08:58But the idea there is that multiple members of the Gallagher family gathering around, making
09:04memories, living life in this house for the next 100, 150 years.
09:09This is going to be for our game table top.
09:12I got two of the legs ready.
09:14Okay.
09:14So the way this works, you want to keep holding pressure down.
09:20All right.
09:21Nice, nice.
09:22Yeah.
09:22Sweet.
09:22I mean, this is real rough.
09:23Yep, the bones are in place.
09:25You think your parents are going to like these?
09:26Oh, yeah.
09:27Yeah.
09:27It'll be like, we'll still have a piece of us at home since we built it.
09:30All right.
09:31So let's build the base.
09:32With the Chardonnay.
09:33Got me very much.
09:36Holes in my pockets where the ends are hard to touch.
09:39Worlds at my fingertips.
09:41Just don't know which one.
09:42I got a chip that's on my shoulder.
09:45Unloved song.
09:47I can't get over the volume of the kitchen.
09:51It's real grand.
09:53It's so grand and so gorgeous.
09:54It's getting painted today.
09:55It'll be actually one of these colors in my hand.
09:58Did you see what Stubbs did here?
10:01And I think it's my favorite thing about the house.
10:06I got to touch it up though.
10:07I got to glue down where it's popped up, put a new clear coat.
10:10I'm just really glad we were able to keep it because when Stubbs called, he was like,
10:15Hey, we can't find it anywhere.
10:17What?
10:17Did I sort of?
10:18Okay.
10:19No one told me that.
10:20It was in the garage.
10:21Safe and sound.
10:22That just made me want to throw up and I know it's here.
10:24It's all okay.
10:25Great.
10:26But Chris loves green and blue.
10:28Uh huh.
10:29So now I think it's time to talk about wallpaper in this half bath.
10:33This is all part of the new addition.
10:34Yeah.
10:35None of this was here.
10:36Just a few weeks ago.
10:37I had to rip off all the rotten stuff, which was like the whole back of the house.
10:42So when we built it back, we planned it out and made it better.
10:47This way there is a half bath and a laundry, dedicated space because water was getting in between the addition
10:53and the original house.
10:54Now it's waterproof.
10:55We no longer have a failing foundation.
10:58We rebuilt the breakfast nook off the kitchen and back entry mudroom, then a half bath and a laundry room.
11:05We're going to now build a new screen porch that spans the entire back of the house and will reconnect
11:11to those original brick steps.
11:12We needed a laundry room.
11:14We needed a half bath.
11:16But doing these pocket door systems, we're using pocket doors to create little walls.
11:21And it also doesn't take up much space.
11:22You can really get usefulness in every single inch of that addition we built.
11:27We gave her the green on the exterior and we're giving her green in the dining room.
11:31But this is her blue moment.
11:32I love this pattern.
11:33I wish that the background were more saturated.
11:36Like it feels like this is a white wallpaper, but the colors are right.
11:39Otherwise, I love this large scale.
11:42I like that rich color in the background.
11:44Easy pick.
11:46So that's the one.
11:47That's kind of the island color.
11:49There's navy in the pattern.
11:51And I'm using a navy that leans a little green for the island in the kitchen.
11:55We're bringing the navy from the wallpaper to the island to the parlor.
12:00Can we talk about how we can like try to make these look better?
12:03And what do you mean?
12:04I don't love these bookcases.
12:06They're very 1980s and the color is not my favorite.
12:11This is the ugliest room in the house.
12:13Building custom built-ins would be great, but we don't have that kind of money.
12:16So we're going to use the cabinets that were here and make them built-ins.
12:19This is going to be their like living room, game night, family time parlor.
12:23I hope they're going to have fun in here.
12:25It used to be the clinic.
12:26We lost the door.
12:27We put in the windows and now it's just this hodgepodge patchwork hot mess.
12:31These are all the colors I'm using in the house.
12:34This is our exterior color, so I don't want to see that again right when we walk in.
12:37I like the navy.
12:38It feels very parlor.
12:40What color is the game table?
12:42Cherry.
12:43The floor is like the color of cherry, kind of.
12:45Yeah, that looks great together.
12:47If we can paint the cabinets and the walls the same color, I think it could help me warm up
12:52to them.
12:52And then all the trim in the room will be that historic, almost black mahogany color.
13:03Countertop day, and we have everyone helping.
13:07It's so many countertops.
13:08I mean, we started with the smallest kitchen in the world to demo, and now we're going to have just
13:12endless counter space.
13:14Chris Gallagher is going to be so, so, so, so happy.
13:18I'll be happy when we bring the rest in.
13:20You'll be happy when we're done?
13:21Yeah.
13:23Yeah.
13:23I added pantries on each side of the window, and so our countertop is going to slide between our cabinetry.
13:29Yeah.
13:30It's only a space this big, and it has to fit perfectly like a glove.
13:34That fits almost as good as DJ's muscle shirt.
13:36Yeah.
13:38It is so beautiful.
13:42No beers.
13:43I just am getting giddy thinking of how Chris is going to feel when she sees this and gets to
13:48cook in this kitchen.
13:48Like this right here?
13:49This one little space?
13:51That was the whole kitchen?
13:52Right here.
13:53This is all she had.
13:54That rolling dishwasher.
13:55I think that's this.
13:56No, there's one more.
13:57We need everybody to go outside for it.
13:59Uh-huh.
14:00Deshawn and his wife Emily are expecting their second baby boy soon, but they needed a bassinet.
14:05We all pitched in as a crew, and Emily and Deshawn are about to be so tired.
14:12Baby's first sawhorse.
14:13That's awesome.
14:14Thank y'all.
14:15That's why I very, like, inconspicuously asked you about your baby register a few weeks ago.
14:19Were the hammers on there?
14:20Yeah, they were on there.
14:21Yeah.
14:21Baby hammers.
14:22Get them going.
14:23Yep.
14:24When he comes, we'll be ready.
14:25Stick that baby outside.
14:26Don't have to worry about mosquitoes.
14:28It's a perfect plan.
14:30Go play outside.
14:33You're ready now.
14:34Thanks, everybody.
14:35Yeah, you're welcome.
14:41The blueberry bushes in Chris and Jeff's backyard finally produced enough blueberries,
14:46and I got them before the birds did.
14:49This home is called White Oak.
14:52Jeff's sister Gwen lives here, she and her husband.
14:55So they're staying here with the decals until we finish their house.
14:59It is famous in Laurel.
15:01It's just, like, right across the street from their house.
15:03But the back of this house faces it.
15:06Which is great for them, because it's still really close to their chiropractic clinic.
15:10I'm coming to bring blueberries.
15:12Definitely not here, because I want to look at this house.
15:16Hey.
15:17Hey, neighbor.
15:18How are you?
15:19Come in.
15:21This is amazing.
15:22This mural is incredible.
15:24The stairwell was hand-painted by Jill Biskin, an artist for the Metropolitan Opera Company.
15:30And she came and lived with us for about six weeks while she painted the stairwell in.
15:35She loved to work at night until about three in the morning.
15:39Wow.
15:40Most of the woodwork beyond the floors is mahogany.
15:42How old is the house?
15:441906.
15:45Okay.
15:46All the woodwork.
15:48Ben would love this.
15:50Oh, yeah.
15:51It's amazing, isn't it?
15:52It is.
15:54Well, look who's here.
15:55Hey, guys.
15:56Hello.
15:57What's going on?
15:58And look at this.
15:59Wow.
16:00I just wanted you to know your backyard is alive and well.
16:03That's good.
16:04We haven't killed everything.
16:05I have not lived with my brother since he went away to college.
16:08How's that?
16:09Oh, great.
16:09Oh, we're not choking each other again.
16:11We always have fun.
16:12We always have a good time.
16:14Good.
16:14Because you know there can always be delays.
16:17Don't extend it out too long.
16:18Well, you know, I hope you're comfortable in here.
16:23Is it true that the third floor was like a roller skating room?
16:28Yes, it was.
16:29I have heard that rumor before.
16:31That's where we're staying on the third floor.
16:33You're in this roller rink?
16:34It's the size of the house.
16:35Yeah.
16:36It's huge.
16:36And the floors were concrete at the time.
16:39Well, what I do know is that there's a little driveway right on the back that goes straight to your
16:44house.
16:45There is.
16:46That's right.
16:46We're parking up front.
16:48Okay.
16:48Love that.
16:48The outside's going to look very different.
16:50Crazy.
16:50Very, very exciting.
16:52Yeah.
16:52I think I'll be excited to get back in the house.
16:54Yeah?
16:54Yeah.
16:55Home is home.
16:56It's true.
16:57Uh-huh.
16:57No matter how beautiful this house is, it's not home.
17:00It's coming.
17:00I promise.
17:01There's no rest for the wicked, wicked.
17:04Keeping my eyes on the women's wicked.
17:07Only myself getting down and dirty.
17:09Cause you can't trust anyone else.
17:12I'm the real thing.
17:14Can't be me the real thing.
17:16Can't be me the real thing.
17:22Can't be me the real thing.
17:24All right.
17:24So we don't need to put this door on until we get that hardware up.
17:28Yeah.
17:29And do we have a stretcher?
17:31Check this out.
17:32I don't care.
17:32I need to see baby pictures.
17:34Oh, baby pictures.
17:35Yeah.
17:36Look.
17:36Oh my gosh.
17:38Which one's Abel?
17:39The smaller one.
17:40Oh, okay.
17:42Look at that.
17:43No jealousy.
17:43Look here and look.
17:44He's beautiful.
17:46The baby is here.
17:47It's so bad that I didn't even think about the baby.
17:49To be fair, you didn't think about it because Deshawn is acting 100% normal, energetic, alive, awake, alert, enthusiastic.
17:57Okay.
17:57This is the disappearing.
18:00Disappearing, reappearing coffee bar.
18:02Deshawn won't let me stand on the countertop.
18:05Is that why you called me here?
18:09You should just let me pick paint colors.
18:11No, you're doing great, baby.
18:19She really wanted doors that would open and then hide.
18:22She did it.
18:24Yeah.
18:25Yeah.
18:26Perfect.
18:27Now time for the shelf.
18:31Okay, got a little drag on one side.
18:33We got a little fine tuning.
18:34And now...
18:37This kitchen's really growing up.
18:39This kitchen's like all our babies, you know?
18:41They just grow up before you know it.
18:47In 1904, this was the first house on the block.
18:49Yeah, it's a little bit before the Titanic was sunk.
18:52And the Gallagher's tell us this was a light fixture.
18:56When Jeff was growing up in this house, he and his friends would dare each other to stick their finger
19:01in this live wire and see who got zapped.
19:04Jeez.
19:04I bet they did get zapped.
19:05I bet they did.
19:06Wow.
19:07What is the possibility of making it a light again?
19:11Would you be against taking this round piece off the top of the post?
19:15If you want to make an omelet, you got to break some eggs.
19:17Because sometimes you got to do what you got to do.
19:21Did Colton fix an oil post?
19:23The wiring is dead now, but he thinks if he goes under the house, he can see what's possible.
19:29If you told me I had to go under the house to fix this, I'd say, can't be fixed.
19:33Can't be fixed.
19:35Any time you can bring back an original feature to the house, I think we should.
19:41And if we can give the Gallagher's some very special architectural feature that his sister's house does not have, that
19:49would be a feat.
19:50I believe in Colton, and you have to believe to receive.
19:55You need some, too.
19:57There you go.
19:57Ah!
19:58Ah, squid it!
19:59I just tried to get all the strain up.
20:02Ah!
20:03Go straight through it.
20:04It's amazing.
20:05Um, but the bugs don't.
20:06That's right.
20:07Let's get that thing up.
20:08Today should be the last day that we need bug spray back that way.
20:14Because by the end of the day, it's going to be screened.
20:15A couple shots here, and you stretch it out.
20:18Then pull the top really tight.
20:21A screened-in porch is such a luxury in the south, isn't it?
20:24And it's my very favorite when it's on the back of the house and doesn't block the front door.
20:29Got to get it tight.
20:30Got to be able to bounce a cat off of it.
20:32Got it!
20:34Hope it's declawed.
20:35Tony is the cat man.
20:36He ought to know.
20:37There's a fly in here.
20:38Got to get him out before we finish.
20:40The Gallagher's are going to love that back porch.
20:42And really, they'll have the best of all worlds.
20:44You got a big, deep front porch that's shaded and cool with ceiling fans.
20:48And you got a great little back porch that's private and screened with ceiling fans.
20:57Adam and his wife, Lily, are really good friends of ours.
21:01Adam is an artist and a painter who's done so much beautiful work for us.
21:05Adam asked her swatches of all the rooms that we're doing at the Gallagher's.
21:09Typically, it means he's going to do a painting, if I'm lucky.
21:11The trusts are just across the street and to the left.
21:14We just finished the pool here a few months ago for Adam and Lily.
21:17Now, I told him the girls would be here all the time.
21:20How's the water?
21:21It's perfect.
21:22Okay, I'm going to get in in just a minute, okay?
21:24I promise.
21:25I got all the swatches that you asked for.
21:28Thanks for bringing this.
21:30Well, you know, like the Gallagher's, we love them.
21:32They were like my first job out of college.
21:34I taught the boys art lessons when they were like three, five, and six.
21:39They were your first students?
21:41First students out of the back, yeah.
21:42They're adults now.
21:44It really is hard for me to deal with, actually.
21:48But I would love to do something for them and have a piece in their house.
21:52The kitchen island is kind of a bold, and then the dining room.
21:56Okay.
21:57This color.
21:57Because I love their boys so much.
22:00I want to do something that's kind of representative of them.
22:03Is this going to be something that's going to make them cry?
22:05I would love to do that.
22:07Do your best.
22:08I would really love to do like a row of three trees.
22:13Mm-hmm.
22:14They have had a million pets in their life.
22:17The weirdest, craziest pets you can imagine, like hedgehogs and parakeets.
22:21If the boys brought it home, it was a pet.
22:24They named it.
22:24And they named it, and it was there.
22:26And so they had Belle the dog a long time ago, and then they've had lots of cats.
22:30But I would love to do like three trees that represent the boys.
22:34Oh, yeah.
22:34And you're going to hide the animals.
22:35And then hide as many of those pets as I can in that painting.
22:38They have raised three solid kids.
22:41Yeah.
22:42Ben really enjoyed working with them in the woodshop.
22:44He said they were awesome.
22:45That makes it even better.
22:46Lily and I had a dinner party there with them once and helped wheel the dishwasher around the kitchen.
22:51Oh, my gosh.
22:53I ain't never in my life seen anything like their old kitchen.
22:57I don't know a family more deserving.
23:00The reason it matters that we do good work is because we see these people every day, everywhere we go.
23:07We are friends with these people.
23:09This is the part of small towns that people talk about.
23:12Everybody's in your business.
23:14Everybody's watching.
23:15Yep.
23:16Okay.
23:16What's the verdict here?
23:18Well, we're ready to set a new light on here.
23:20The new old post is wired and ready for light.
23:24That's so perfect.
23:25It's like it was made for that spot.
23:27Almost like it was made for that.
23:28Turn the switch on and sign it out together.
23:31One, two, three.
23:33Bingo!
23:34Dude!
23:35All right.
23:36That is so rad.
23:37That looks cool.
23:38Ben, come here.
23:39Look at this!
23:40Dang!
23:41That's awesome.
23:42We have light.
23:43It is glowy.
23:44It is beautiful.
23:45It feels historic.
23:46I think Chris and Jeff will love it.
23:48No more finger shocks.
23:50Yep.
23:51How are they going to entertain themselves?
23:53They'll just have to pull a socket out upstairs.
23:55You can climb a higher pounder.
23:58You can drag the seven seat.
24:02But you're never gonna find another one.
24:07Dolly's are out.
24:09Yo.
24:10I'm not helping because of height difference.
24:13They're moving in a range that's as big as a small truck.
24:17The delivery guy set it on the sidewalk and said, good luck.
24:21All right.
24:22Let's just set her straight down right here.
24:25This range is as big as their old kitchen.
24:27Eight burners, two ovens, a warming dish.
24:30This is a full kitchen right here.
24:32I know it will fit because Stubbs built those cabinets.
24:36You could squeeze a sheet of paper.
24:38On each side.
24:40On each side.
24:43I just want to say how blessed I feel that we do this kind of work
24:48because I have your phone number.
24:50You are constantly saving me from some emergency situation.
24:55True Wilt is having the phone number of a pediatrician,
24:59a plumber, and the HVAC man.
25:03That's a nice range.
25:04Mm-hmm.
25:16It's just not centered.
25:18And I don't know how we didn't notice it when the dang Peabody Hotel chandelier was hanging there.
25:25Chris and Jeff have a chandelier from the very famous Peabody Hotel in Memphis, Tennessee.
25:30What makes it famous?
25:32The Ducks.
25:32The Ducks walk around.
25:33There's a show.
25:34Anyway, it's a very cool hotel and you should all visit.
25:36But the thing is, this chandelier weighs 150 pounds and it had to go somewhere safe so we could renovate
25:44the house.
25:44Poor Colton, our electrician, had to wrestle this thing upstairs into the attic, which is like three flights of stairs,
25:52so that it wasn't damaged at all while we renovate the house.
25:55And I'm wondering if the reason it was off-center was because that was the strongest point to hang a
26:01150-pound light.
26:02It is so very possible.
26:04That is one of the Gallagher's most prized possessions.
26:08As it should be.
26:09Yep.
26:09It's from the Peabody Hotel.
26:10It's pretty rad.
26:11But it isn't centered.
26:12How did you come back up here?
26:13It's not centered at all.
26:15The light was centered in this direction, but it was not centered in this direction.
26:20I think it blinded us with its beauty and its sheer volume.
26:24You were blinded by the light.
26:25Yes.
26:26And I just really want that chandelier centered on the window, too.
26:30So what if we do a medallion?
26:32Then we can cut it out, put whatever bracing we need.
26:36Yeah.
26:37And slide our Peabody chandelier over.
26:39No one's the wiser.
26:42You know, medallions don't always have to be a focal point.
26:46They can sometimes just be a little concealer.
26:50Doop.
26:53Colton feels good about it.
26:55That light's going up.
27:11Drew.
27:12Hello.
27:13How are you, Erin?
27:14How are you?
27:14Great to see you.
27:15You too.
27:16We drove to Hattiesburg today because Stan and Drew will let me print four recipe tea towels for the Gallagher's.
27:24I did this with my grandmother's cornbread and biscuit recipes so that I can always quickly grab them when I'm
27:28cooking.
27:29When we were demoing the kitchen, I found these handwritten recipes taped up inside a cabinet door.
27:34And it looked like they could have been there since the 70s.
27:37So these were well loved and used by the family.
27:40I want to print these recipes on tea towels.
27:42That is really neat.
27:43That is really neat.
27:43Sentimental.
27:44It's handwriting.
27:45It's just a wonderful idea.
27:46I saved the recipes.
27:48I scanned them.
27:49Isolated the handwriting from the paper.
27:51Made it all black.
27:52Added some decorative frames.
27:54Did you have a color in mind that you wanted to see in particular?
27:56Like blueberry, peach?
27:58Yeah, blueberry.
27:59Which is almost a navy.
28:01Yeah.
28:02Let's do navy.
28:03Okay.
28:03And that's about what we're going to get.
28:05I think that's good.
28:06So next, we'll print it out on a piece of film and make a screen.
28:12We'll burn the black toner on that film into the screen.
28:15And that's how we get the stencil onto the screen.
28:19It's like developing film.
28:20It is, absolutely.
28:21So we're going to take this image.
28:24And there's nothing currently on there.
28:26Yeah.
28:26You have to wash out the design so ink can pass through.
28:30And then you just pull a thin layer of ink over the design.
28:35And it's on your fabric.
28:36Lift up.
28:38Look!
28:40Nice!
28:41Look at that!
28:43Perfect.
28:44I think it looks good.
28:45I think it's a really sweet little tea towel.
28:47Put it on the dryer and we'll lay it flat.
28:49And then you have to cure the ink by putting it through the heater.
28:54Well, what do you think?
28:55Perfect.
28:56Oh, that turned out great.
28:57Yeah.
28:58Love it.
28:58Thank y'all for letting me do this.
29:00You're very welcome.
29:00It's our pleasure.
29:02All right.
29:02Three more recipes.
29:03What other colors should I use?
29:05Oh, hmm.
29:06Let's see.
29:13I'm going to paint the clinic sign.
29:14That sign has been there since the 70s, I think.
29:18It's where the entrance to Jeff's dad's chiropractic clinic in the house used to be, which is now the parlor.
29:28The house looks great and it's like a dumpster fire out here.
29:32We got grass coming.
29:33We got some trim ups and mulch coming.
29:36We're so close.
29:40It's been six months since we started on this house.
29:44I'm actually sad to give it back to the Gallagher's because I've enjoyed it so much.
29:50I'm going to meet up with George Bassey.
29:52He is our museum director.
29:54Well, you'd ask for some old photos.
29:56Yes.
29:56Anything relevant to the Gallagher's.
29:58To the house.
29:59So this, though, is the-
30:01Yes.
30:01That's the Gallagher's house.
30:03Wow.
30:04This house is over 120 years old.
30:07It's only had two owners.
30:08So the Whitaker's had the dry goods store and that's who built this house.
30:12This is really special.
30:13To see a house evolve with a family is so rare.
30:17And we feel hugely honored to get to participate in that.
30:21This is big.
30:22In a small town, this is history happening.
30:24Adam did a painting of three trees representing, can you guess?
30:28The three boys.
30:29That's right.
30:30I felt like this room risked getting a little bit stuffy and formal.
30:34Well, it's perfect for this wall and perfect for this house.
30:37They love to be the entertainers.
30:39This house is going to be full of life and people all the time.
30:42Games, part of entertaining.
30:44That game table that Ben built for the parlor gives that room sort of an identity now.
30:47And their back porch feels like the best possible version of itself.
30:51I love that we took something they already had and repurposed it.
30:54Then the height measurement board.
30:56That means family.
30:57You watch your children grow and they leave the nest, but you still have that memory.
31:01It took so many people and so many hours to save this house.
31:07It really was close to the end of its life.
31:12Miraculous.
31:13This is why we do what we do.
31:16This house and houses like it.
31:18And I'm so excited for the Gallahers, but really sad for us that it's over.
31:25Are you excited to be back in your own house and out of your sister's house?
31:29We've had a good time.
31:30We have.
31:30But we definitely missed our home.
31:32We're ready to be back in the house.
31:33OK.
31:34All right.
31:35Welcome to the Gallagher house.
31:36Whoa.
31:37All right.
31:40That looks awesome.
31:41Oh, man.
31:42That is unbelievable.
31:43Oh, my God.
31:44It's beautiful.
31:45And no holes.
31:46No holes anywhere.
31:48Yes.
31:48She's ready for another 120 years.
31:50Yeah.
31:50Well, we basically put a whole new outside on.
31:54Oh.
31:54And that's the first time we've ever done that.
31:56You have all new siding now.
31:57You have insulation.
31:58And your window trim is a lower profile that doesn't let water get in.
32:03You have a lower power bill.
32:05Yeah.
32:06Really good.
32:07The house has always been a shade of green.
32:08It is still a shade of green.
32:10Wow.
32:10It looks so good.
32:11It's kind of a dried rosemary color.
32:13Yeah.
32:13That's unbelievable.
32:15Beautiful.
32:15The shakes look good.
32:17Yeah, they do.
32:18Highlights those.
32:19Good, yeah.
32:19They're such a defining feature.
32:21We're excited.
32:22We've missed our porch.
32:23Oh, yes.
32:23We have enjoyed your porch so much.
32:26Yeah.
32:27This front porch has just been a dream.
32:30We love this porch.
32:31We love the porch.
32:31We love that porch.
32:31And you kept the gnome.
32:32We kept even the clinics on.
32:34Oh, yeah.
32:34We gave it a little china.
32:36Oh, that's awesome.
32:37The outside is the least of the changes that have happened to your house.
32:41Let's go inside.
32:42Yeah.
32:48Oh, my.
32:49Look at the light.
32:50Oh, my.
32:51Look at the light.
32:52Look at the light.
32:53Yes.
32:54That's awesome.
32:56That is.
32:56That is.
32:57That is.
32:57I love it.
32:58That wire that was tucked down in there was still.
33:01Oh, my.
33:02Our electrician found out.
33:04And your dear, sweet neighbor, George Bassi, help me.
33:06Oh.
33:07There's your street and there's your house.
33:08That's great.
33:09I love it.
33:09That is awesome.
33:11And then we made big changes in the game parlor.
33:15Oh, my gosh.
33:16I love the color.
33:17It looks beautiful.
33:19The bookcases.
33:20Oh, my gosh.
33:21The door's.
33:22Door's gone.
33:22Oh, my gosh.
33:23I love this.
33:24Look at that.
33:26Yes.
33:27Man.
33:28Did you make this table?
33:29I did with your boy's help.
33:31That's awesome.
33:32Oh, that's awesome.
33:33These pieces come out.
33:34So if you're doing a puzzle instead of a game.
33:36Uh-huh.
33:37Uh-huh.
33:38There's a drawer underneath for a little bit of storage,
33:40and it goes all the way through the other side.
33:42Oh, yeah.
33:42Oh, yeah.
33:43That's awesome.
33:44This is something that they will do with y'all.
33:46Yeah.
33:47And this will be a really special memory, not just for y'all,
33:51but for them.
33:52That's right.
33:52The cabinets were repurposed.
33:54Yes.
33:54We just updated them.
33:56They look great.
33:57They just kind of blend.
33:58Yeah.
33:59It's like they were just built down or something.
34:00And there was a door here and a door there.
34:03That's right.
34:04Right.
34:04Not there anymore.
34:05No.
34:06No.
34:06And you can see the clinic signs through here.
34:08Mm-hmm.
34:08It looks great.
34:10It used to be the clinic.
34:11Yeah.
34:12It was the waiting room.
34:12So now we wanted it to become the game parlor.
34:16Yes.
34:16All right.
34:17Is it time?
34:18We're going to the kitchen?
34:19Do you want to go to the kitchen?
34:20Oh, my gosh.
34:20Do you want to go to the kitchen?
34:21Yes.
34:21Oh, my gosh.
34:22I can't believe this is happening, really.
34:24Go see your kitchen.
34:24Oh, my goodness.
34:25Whoa.
34:26Oh.
34:32Oh.
34:33Oh, my God.
34:39Wow.
34:39Oh.
34:40Oh.
34:41Where am I?
34:43Got your kitchen, honey.
34:45Gorgeous.
34:46It is gorgeous.
34:48Absolutely.
34:48Oh.
34:49It's just overwhelming just the size of it compared to what we have.
34:52It's beautiful.
34:53Oh, I love it.
34:54Oh, it's gorgeous.
34:55Mm-hmm.
34:56Mm-hmm.
34:57Mm-hmm.
34:58You have counter space.
35:00Yeah.
35:00Lots of it.
35:01Oh, my gosh.
35:02Cabinets.
35:02Oh, my gosh.
35:03I mean, I'm going to need, like, a stepladder.
35:06Before, I never needed a stepladder in the kitchen.
35:09A dishwasher.
35:10That stays in one spot.
35:12Yes.
35:13And look at this.
35:14And all the counter space.
35:15And you want a quartzite?
35:16We got your quartzite.
35:17Yes.
35:17I love this.
35:19This was the biggest and heaviest countertop job we've had in a long time.
35:23Oh, I love it.
35:24Your stove is so heavy.
35:26They use straps to carry it in here.
35:28On their backs.
35:28Oh, my goodness.
35:29We owe them an adjustment.
35:32Oh, yeah.
35:33They're probably going to need one.
35:35I love the shelf above the stove.
35:39Uh-huh.
35:39Uh-huh.
35:39Yeah.
35:40And I love that it's seamless.
35:41No grout lines.
35:43Mm-hmm.
35:43So clean.
35:44I have a question.
35:47Is there some significance to this recipe?
35:51Mm-hmm.
35:51Yeah, that's his mom's.
35:52She has the perfect handwriting.
35:54That's awesome.
35:55That's great.
35:56Oh, that's awesome.
35:56We didn't know the significance of them.
35:58Yes.
35:58That's right.
35:59That's awesome.
36:00Mom's very happy up in heaven right now.
36:02Yes, she is.
36:02She always wanted this kitchen.
36:05Check this out.
36:06Go open that up.
36:06See what you think.
36:07Oh.
36:10Oh, yeah.
36:10Yeah.
36:10Oh, my gosh.
36:12Wow.
36:13Lovely.
36:14Coffee bar has more counter space than the original kitchen.
36:19Exactly.
36:21This can't be our kitchen.
36:22And the bookshelf for the cookbooks.
36:24Yeah.
36:24I love that.
36:25Do you miss what was?
36:27No.
36:28No.
36:28Not in the least.
36:29No?
36:30The floors.
36:31The floors look great.
36:33It was worth the wait.
36:33It was worth the wait.
36:34Oh, my gosh.
36:35We did new old-growth heart pine flooring that blends with the rest of your house.
36:41Beautiful.
36:41Seamless.
36:42They look beautiful.
36:43Glad that we did that.
36:44Your whole life?
36:44I can't believe this is my house.
36:4656 years in the making.
36:47And this is it?
36:48You guys did it.
36:49This was part of the kitchen.
36:51Oh, yeah.
36:51This was your dishwasher.
36:52That was the dishwasher.
36:54That's where the dishwasher came from.
36:55Oh, I love it.
36:56I love, love, love it.
37:00I'm so glad you love it.
37:04You want to see the dining room and how they sort of work together?
37:07Oh, my gosh.
37:08And this opening is massive.
37:10Yes.
37:11I love it.
37:12Oh, I love that.
37:14What do they call that?
37:15The medallion?
37:16Oh, yeah.
37:16This light was totally off-center in the room.
37:19Oh.
37:19Did you know that?
37:20No.
37:21And so this was our solution to quickly repair the ceiling.
37:24But there's not another one in the world.
37:26That's great.
37:27That's it.
37:27Absolutely not.
37:28That's awesome.
37:28And there's not another one of these in the world either.
37:31Oh, my goodness.
37:33Oh, my gosh.
37:33That's obviously Adam.
37:35Adam, I wanted to gift this to you.
37:37Can you guess what the three trees represent?
37:40Our boys.
37:41That's your boys.
37:42Oh, that's beautiful.
37:43Adam told us that his first job as a teacher was tutoring your boys.
37:47Yes.
37:47It was.
37:47Yes.
37:48And that it was really important to him to give you all a gift to thank you for giving
37:52him that wonderful first experience.
37:54That's awesome.
37:56And every pet you've ever had is in the painting hidden.
38:00Look, the hedgehog.
38:01The hedgehog.
38:02Quills.
38:03Quills.
38:03And JoJo.
38:05And Belle.
38:06Yes.
38:07Elephant.
38:09A mouse-nosed elephant.
38:11Cute.
38:11That's good.
38:13Yeah.
38:13Oh, my goodness.
38:13Oh, my gosh.
38:14That's awesome.
38:15Your house is so beautiful.
38:17But the thing that makes it more beautiful to me is that it's been a family home.
38:22And I hope it always will be, which is why I had to die on this hill.
38:26Come see this.
38:27Come and look at this.
38:27Oh.
38:28We had to keep something from the house.
38:33So it's a part of your family's history, so I wanted it to be here.
38:37Oh.
38:38Oh, yeah.
38:39Because I love it.
38:39I was wondering where it was.
38:42I love it.
38:42I'm so glad y'all could save that.
38:44We cleaned it up.
38:45I touched it up.
38:46I glued down any paint that was flaking off.
38:48I love it there.
38:49We love it there.
38:50That's great.
38:50That's perfect.
38:51We've also got a little half bath for your guests.
38:53Okay.
38:54Oh, yeah.
38:54You do love to throw a party.
38:58Look at the wallpaper.
38:59That is beautiful.
39:00Oh, my gosh.
39:01That is gorgeous.
39:02I like it.
39:02Yeah.
39:03And the lungs.
39:04That was in the study.
39:05That was in the study.
39:07No pedestal.
39:08I love it.
39:08Easy to claim.
39:09I know that's important.
39:10It is.
39:10Oh, but I love this wallpaper.
39:12It's beautiful.
39:13I thought it was a fun, bold pattern.
39:15It is.
39:16Brings like a silvery color and a gold color, so we kind of mix the metals in here.
39:20Yeah.
39:21And you still got your screen porch.
39:23Oh.
39:24How sweet is that?
39:25Yeah, Ben is loving the screen porch.
39:27Oh, wow.
39:28Look at that.
39:29Oh, my gosh.
39:30It's good, isn't it?
39:31It's here.
39:31Oh, I love that.
39:33And that thing, that is something else.
39:35Look at how y'all...
39:36You guys shine that sucker up.
39:37Absolutely.
39:38So, your boys helped us with this.
39:40Oh, they did?
39:40Yeah.
39:41We took the stove all the way apart.
39:44That is...
39:44Cleaned it up.
39:45Painted it.
39:46This is the old den.
39:48Yeah.
39:48These are the den walls.
39:49Oh, yeah.
39:51We cleaned them up.
39:52I see that.
39:52I see that.
39:53Oh, yeah.
39:53They came up with the decision to let it come all the way around the old stovepipe.
39:58Uh-huh.
39:59This piece was always on the back porch.
40:01Heck, I used to play with this thing when I was little, like four years old.
40:04Oh, wow.
40:04It's been in this house since we came here, 56 years.
40:07It looks fantastic, though, right now.
40:09It looks really good.
40:11Absolutely.
40:11It's great.
40:12Awesome.
40:12But it's such a good back porch that I think is comparable to what you had before, but
40:16you can actually use it.
40:17Yes.
40:17Yes.
40:18I know some people would be jealous.
40:20Uh-huh.
40:21Mm-hmm.
40:24Well...
40:24Okay.
40:24Six months.
40:25I hope this was worth it.
40:26It was so, so worth it.
40:29Yes, we can.
40:30It's the longest renovation we've ever worked on.
40:32Yeah.
40:32Y'all did.
40:33It's a great job.
40:34The original quote was $400,000, but the historic board allowed us to use composite
40:39siding and aluminum windows, which saved us about 50 grand.
40:42We ended up dipping about 30 grand into the contingency, so $380,000.
40:47That's not a small investment.
40:49Mm-hmm.
40:50But I know your boys will appreciate it.
40:51Y'all are gonna appreciate it, but I think everybody in the neighborhood appreciates it.
40:56It's gonna take a little while to sink in that this is my house.
41:02All right, so this is the part where you're gonna want us to throw to something that's
41:05like a very dramatic this season on Hometown.
41:09Cue the big, beautiful montage.
41:12Do we feel super solid about this plan?
41:16Nope.
41:16That's what makes it a good one.
41:19There's gonna be things you've never seen on TV.
41:22Now a wedding venue.
41:23It's not just a house.
41:24Is there a chance that we could deliver a baby?
41:27And then there's problems and problems.
41:30It puckered.
41:31Honestly, every single house this season made us work for it.
41:35No.
41:35You are headed towards catastrophic failure.
41:38That's as dangerous as it gets.
41:40Well, it's probably the worst thing I could've, you know, fathomed.
41:45Oh!
41:48And then there's gonna be crying and screaming.
41:52Oh!
41:55It is so beautiful.
41:57I love it.
41:57Oh, sweet mother of...
